I'm a landscape, macro and wildlife photographer living near the southernly border of the great Yorkshire Dales National Park in England. Not only I do photography, but I go fishing too.
Primarily Game fishing for brown trout and grayling, I also fish for chub and barbel.
Join me as I try and catch these fish in my home County, Yorkshire, and once a year in Scotland for sea trout and brown trout.

Ep 19 - Me vs. Predators, River Nidd
At last a true representation of a fishing trip. I know that stretch well. Brilliant to watch
Thank you for the comment Jay. I can honestly say that it was the worst year for me. I only returned back to fishing after a 4 year break. I don't know if it was me, or just the fish but I didn't catch any chub or barbel. Two weeks ago proved much better (last two videos on my channel) at this location. I'm hoping to be back this week, unless I go walking.
I caught my one and only barbel on the Nidd - at Cowthorpe. Nice video
hello great video! can you please show the rigs you used to catch those chub? thanks!
Sure I'll do that in my next video!
@@daelpixphotography ok
Brilliant video, keep them coming .
Thanks, will do! I'm planning on going tomorrow, or Tuesday, so look out for a video :)
Hi, which Wharfe beat is this ?
Addingham
They have probably turned onto your worms as the higher water levels release them from the soil on the riverbank.
The fish do tend to wake up when the river starts to drop. Don't like wide angle at all I find it annoying that everything is bent.
Agreed with the wide angle. It's ok for different scenarios, this isn't one of them
Is this Bradford no1 water cowthorp
@@nathanmcintosh2527 No this is the Upper Nidd. Cowthorpe is 27 miles farther down the valley
I'm going to have a go up there very soon. I've never found it easy but there are fish in it.
New video coming tomorrow :D
@@daelpixphotography Look forward to it.
I just fly fished kirkstal stretch been a few years since I fly fished just need some tips .
I'm sorry I haven't fished it. I would suggest you joining www.flyfishing.co.uk/forums/ ..... You'll get a lot of good advice.
This was my favourite stretch of The Nidd for over 40 years until 2 years ago. I made 2 visits and never caught a fish or even saw a fish rise or any fly life on the water. I assumed there had been a pollution incident. Can anyone confirm that? Based on what I have watched today it looks like the trout have returned. By the way 40 years ago this stretch held massive shoals of grayling and they all mysteriously disappeared virtually overnight never to return.
I was once surrounded by spawning grayling standing in the middle of the river about 25 years ago. Only seen it once. We've also caught one grayling per cast a few times. My father and I have caught some decent sized trout there too. But we stopped going due to joining Bradford City and life. Yes there's plenty of fish rising and fly life when I was fishing it. I only started going again 2 weeks ago. Going again next week since it's had some rain so hoping to catch more fish then.
@@daelpixphotography Many thanks for your reply. I fished here stalking brownies predominantly on dry flies and caught a number of 2lb fish and lots 1lb plus also. Splendid sport in such a small river. I'm glad that the fish and fauna have returned as last time I was there as mentioned in my first post the river was barren and seemed to have a silty residue covering the whole of the river bed. I may give it another go this season now but as it's a 100 mile round trip for me I'll have to make sure I have a full tank of diesel 🙂.
@@brianperks7278 I was going to use dry fly but just didn't feel like it. It's a 60mile round trip for me. Bit annoying that the Blubberhouses road is closed, but I'm used to driving to Barden, and then following the road from there. I've asked on the clubs facebook page if there was any pollution. Silty residue? Strange. I'll keep you updated.
@@daelpixphotography There was a major incident reported downstream of Gouthwaite around the same time that caused issues. I believe some groundworks at Gouthwaite went wrong and silt washed into the river. Of course that was downstream of the stretch we are discussing. If/when I do make a trip I'll report back.
@brianperks7278 Yep someone mentioned about York Water causing some pollution.
Really glad to stumble across you channel! It's great to see anglers fishing local rivers like millions of us do every year. Thank you. I fish the Don almost exclusively now and find it difficult to keep up with what water is free or owned. Especially true where clubs / owners don't put signs up. Looking forward to catching up with you other vids over the weekend :)
Thanks for the kind comment
Across the water looks a lot easier to gain access, why are you up there?
Spent more time walking lad!
Doesn't bother me. I'm just happy to be out of the house. What you don't see me doing is staying in one spot for half an hour or longer. But obviously I'm not going to bore anyone with me just sitting there.
@@daelpixphotography Genuinely hope my comment wasn't being negative, that was definitely not my aim!
@@stewartmercer19 No I didn't see it as negative, but you were right.
@@daelpixphotography Cheers man. Just want to see the fishing... even if you blank. I /we want to see the float.. want to see you casting, feeding. It gives info. Especially with your camera which has a huge aspect and view of the area in front of you. Look at that view in front of you especially when you say'listen to the bird song for awhile'...c'mon... never mind the fish....that moment listening to nature....oh yeah......look at that view! I'd also suggest a very smaller float and letting it very slowly drag the worm along thebottom without any weight apart from the worm letting it drag. If it is 2 foot in depth. give it 4ft as a tail... maybe even 6.ft... but with the minimum amount of float possible in weight. Not trying to tell you how to suck eggs...
If you watch last years videos where I fish for chub and barbel, I tend to not catch anything apart from a couple of videos. I hate not catching anything but that's fishing for you. Might be my fault with me not getting out of bed early enough because they tend to bite more in the morning (and evening) than when I arrive. Maybe this year I'll wake more earlier. I chose that aspect ratio because it has the stabilization. I don't want anybody to be sea sick with me moving around so much, especially if I bend down. Maybe I'll try different views :) .... I actually caught more fish taking the float off and leaving the shot on. It was the same last week too. I should have gone back yesterday (24th May) because of the rain we've had but had something to do. Might decide to go next week. Thank you for the feedback it's always appreciated!!
Lovely stuff! The upper wharfe is a magical spot, I hope to get out there myself at some point (same club). Bonny trout too. It's annoying when your video looks good as you finish editing it, then looks crap loaded onto RUclips, even though its been processed in 4k. 👍👍
Surprised that trout didn't knock it's self out swimming straight into that rock.
Oh that rock. True haha
By the length of the tails it will be a spinner.
Thanks Stuart
Years ago I used to do quite well on foam beetles down there. They didn't seem to work on the LDASA stretch though. That vibrant setting is alright except when filming large areas of grass. It makes it look out of focus to me.
It's the rendering settings I used which is why the video is so bad. The grass (and everything else) looks perfect in Davinci using the vibrant setting, but once RUclips compresses it, the video looks awful. Such a shame they compress them so much. Looks like I'm still trying to get my head around the rendering settings. I'll be fishing back there next week with floating beetles and worm. I'm sure I haven't seen any beetles there before, or I haven't took any notice.
@@daelpixphotography You're not the only one with problems with RUclips compression woes. It's often complained about. It's while since I fished up there but sometimes there were no beetles about at all but they still seemed to catch. Good luck on your next visit.
Hi, I usually fish the Wharfe in Ilkley and the Nidd below the reservoir but this upper stretch looks interesting - is it day ticketed and if so what club ? Cheers.
Hi Richard. It's a nice little river. The water is owned by Bradford No1 (the club I'm with) and Leeds Amalgamation has How Stean Gorge and to where I fish. No day tickets for either club. I was thinking about joining Nidderdale for below the reservoir, but I won't think about it more just yet..... No1 has a length at Summerbridge too. Email me via my website if you require more information.
The video looked OK at 1080p and 720p, and a fish to boot. Wading staffs are wonderful things for dodgy riverbeds and riverbanks.
You used to be able to access above the weir at the section called Stephen Bank. To get there go down West Hall lane. You could park in a field through a gate. You could pick up brownies stocked by Addingham AA which was a bonus. Walk from the car park down a short slope to the river.
Yep they still have the water there.
That setting is better than the previous one. I don't go boggle-eyed watching it, especially when there is a lot of grass.
Agreed. This video is better than Ep 33. It must have been something to do with the High Sharpness setting. Just been fishing, so I'll edit this video and see what you think. You have no idea how much it means when I get feedback. You're the first person to give me any. Thank you
@@daelpixphotography I seem to remember the high sharpness setting on my webcam seemed to make things worse. If I can help I will. There's no point in leaving people floundering about.
Something not quite right about camera settings or maybe something to do with what RUclips do when encoding the videos. I know I've had videos that look OK until I upload them to RUclips.
Which is why I'm testing
@@daelpixphotography Hope you get it sorted, and catch a fish while trying.
@@jorvikangler I have another video coming tomorrow. Didn't do any fishing sadly. Should be the final 'test video' I do, but I might do a 4k 60fps in my next video. The setting set to High might have been the cause of the quality for this video. Gone back (and staying with ) the Medium setting, as well as High (Vibrant) Colour.
Hope your foot gets better soon. There's nowt wrong with that reel. They were used for years with noisy ratchets like that and people caught. I have several that make worse noises than that.
Thanks. I have appointment on Thursday. I should be better then, but I'll probably be back to being in pain next week.... The reel is a Hardy Gem and love it. I think I only like it because of the sound it makes🤣
@@daelpixphotographyOne of Hardy's many attempts at a cheap reel. Perfectly functional and, as you say, makes a nice noise.
harsh weather but lovely bit of country. I'm in this club too, so its going to geta visit from yours truly!👍
Looks like the sort of days I've had up there. It turns nasty pretty quickly.
Nice trout given the state of the river. I think your guess at alder fly was right, maybe. I wouldn't claim that the trout a genuine wild trout given the amount of stocking Kilnsey Angling Club used to do.
I'm not too sure if it was an alder. They have upright/vertical wings - this one has flat/horizontal wings.
@@daelpixphotography Yeah. he alder looks a bit like a sedge. Having watched the video again I'm certain it's a stonefly.
@@jorvikangler Just looked stonefly up, you could be right there. Thanks. Hmmm stonefly patterns might be on the cards then.
@@daelpixphotography May be worth a try but don't know many people that have done much with them in this country. They work early season in the Nordic countries where they hatch a bit later.
Look a nice stretch that is it the Bradford City angling club water
Great video Used to fish this water ten years ago is the water at skipton and addingham still on the Bradford number one book tight lines Such a beautiful please
Yes they still have the Aire at Skipton
Nice video, river looks lovely, those jig hooks work when fishing upstream, like Czech nymphing or high sticking.
Nice!!
If I was privileged to fish there at the time I wouldn't care a fig about catching. I am not a fly angle so I would like to know how you decide where your first cast will be in a new beat/swim? Untutored I would start on the near side and work out so no line spooks any close in trout.
I don't mind if I don't catch anything, for me it's being outside in the fresh air. I'm hoping this season will better and I'll catch more fish in general. When I started fishing, it was ledgering and float fishing in rivers, and stillwaters, so I know what to look out for when finding fish. It depends on the river and the way the current flows. I look for seams (between fast and slow moving water), top and bottom of rapids (shallow areas) - Maybe I'll do a video on it next month because it's easier to show rather than tell someone as there's so many different factors to look out for when it comes to finding trout and grayling in a river. Because I've fished this stretch of river numerous times I know where the fish will or should be.
Think it would help if you fished your nymph new zealand style
Fishing with another fly wasn't going to help me catch anything. It's more down to the fly I use.
@@daelpixphotographyI'm talking about fishing your nymph under an indicator
@Gfour3flyfshing I did use an indicator a couple of times last year but didn't see the point, so I don't use it any more.
Hard luck mate! its very hard on fly in the winter unless you're using a euro nymph set up with a very long leader and heavy bugs, especially with the river flowing so strongly. Best option is to find an inside bend where the flow isn't as strong and you can fish a short line to without drag. Easier still, a trotting rod and worms! I know of this stretch, I intend to try it myself this year but I'll wait until April or May when there's a chance of some surface activity to inspire me. I wouldn't be trying a new water in the winter. nice vid though👍👍
I'll be tying some jig flies with tungsten beads soon when I get the hooks by a very kind soul in the USA when I have them delivered. I was thinking about trying the river again tomorrow, but I won't have the time. So maybe Tuesday
Looks useful wet fly water...what might the trout be like in the spring....?
I have no idea what it's like in the Spring. I hardly fish it.
I suggest you fish with a shorter line. You have more control and you will hook more fish. This means you need to wade closer to the fish rather than trying to throw out a long line every time. It is not an easy stretch. It used to be stocked many years ago which made things a lot easier. My best sessions down there have come from using traditional North Country spider patterns and techniques.
I couldn't wade out further because it became much deeper. Both the Wharfe and Aire used to be stocked and I'm glad they don't any more. It gives the wild trout a chance to recuperate.
Just found this channel. Really great I live not far from Otley and I like fishing and walking. Says it all
Thank you for the kind comment. I can't wait to get out fishing again in March. It's just a little too wet, rainy, windy and cold at the moment.
lovely walk, difficult to beat the dales! I bet that's a cracking spot for trout come April. I think I would have had to take a trotting rod and some brandlings with me! 👍
A lot of it is quite shallow at normal levels with the odd deeper snaggy sections.
Some of it's changed since last year. I should imagine it changes after every flood. The 'gate' is a debris trap to try and stop the culvert under the road getting blocked.
I did think it was for debrs when editing the video. Thanks for confirming
Can be tricky here
We don't have grayling in Ireland, or chub, barbel or snakes.....😥😥........but I go on holidays to Wales every summer and plan on ticking off all these species (apart from snakes). This coming summer, I'm aiming for a chub and if time permits, a grayling🤞🤞🤞🤞
Well played that man, can't beat a good rod bender.
At least you didn't blank! nice wee grayling. I think maybe we're in the same club, I've often thought about trying this bit but so far I've fished mostly the Aire near Skipton. Very windy spot, I think it would be good on a calmer day. I've a fishing channel too, and do mostly river fishing with fly and float. I didn't notice much difference between the upload settings, but I'm not watching on full screen mode. Good luck with your channel. 👍👍
I'm in the 2 clubs that are next to one another on the areas I fish on the Aire.....This day on the Ribble wasn't the best to day to go out but it was worth getting some fresh air. I'm going back here this week. The weather is supposed to be better, hopefully it won't be as windy. Need to use the maggots up before they turn into casters.
Did you say you were from scotland ? me and my pals have just got into fishing but have been having no luck in local lochs and canals. Do you recomend any whrere to try ?
