    You suggest the artist grade paint is “more archival”. Winsor & Newton provide Lightfastness and Permanence ratings - these are the same between Artist and Student grade paints. What is the basis for your claim one should use artist grade paint if you want your work to last? More colors and different experience mixing are the reasons I see to choose between Artist and Student grade paints

    • @MichaelWarthStudios

      @@andrewlm5677 typically, artist grade paints do not contain fugitive fillers. I don’t always or exclusively use W&N paints. Therefore, I find it to be be best to only use artist grade paints rather than student grade paints.

      @@MichaelWarthStudios Sorry, I’m imposing on your kindness now, as this is a bit off topic. I haven’t really given the Artist grade paint a fair shot because I’ve gotten too used to mixing with the W&N Winton. I feel like most of my mixing is making a bright/intense color more drab. I can understand Artist paint matching bright and intense color more easily but I would fear it would also be more work to make them drab. Fair assessment of the trade off? Or, maybe I’m being an idiot trying to match muddy colors and should be using glazes to do it.

    I was wondering if I just used student grade titanium white if I would get the same effect as a lead white ?

    • @MichaelWarthStudios
      @MichaelWarthStudios 3 месяца назад

      I would say, no. The tinting strength is going to be different. There are several variables that make titanium white and lead white useful to the painter. Student grade paint usually has less pigment to oil ratio - and this too could be viewed as an advantage. Though, titanium and lead white are not the same pigments. Lead white is PW1 and Titanium is PW6. Titanium has a cooler color shift from neutral and Lead White has a warmer color shift from neutral. This video has proven to be somewhat like discussing pineapple on pizza but just know this. One is not really better than the other. Your personal taste and what you want out of your white is all that matters.

    If you are a landscape painter how to save yellows, blues and time? Buy a beautiful green, maybe a Phtalo or Viridian with which you can do wonderful mixes, even purples; or chromium oxide green, very versatile, or start mixing with a light green which can be very near the color needed. Of course for portraitists greens are a minor issue.

    I use titanium (without zinc), lead white (PW1), and flemmish white (PW2). If I want a very strong, cool white I use titanium. With flesh tones it seems to get chalky. For warmer whites and when I need subtle tints, I use lead. Flemmish is somewhere between the two in tinting strength. Drying time doesn't matter as much to me as I use galkyd or Neo-megilp in all but the top layer.

    I think if you’re a beginner, just buy green, honestly, don’t be cheap. You want to get the best possible easiest start without any unnecessary stumbling blocks that will make you want to quit painting. I saw those greens, it happens to everyone. You mix yellow and blue thinking you’ll get a vibrant green and you get a greyish green then you get into the “throw good money after bad” phase when you keep adding yellow, wasting more and more paint instead of starting over. I know experienced painters who went to art school who cannot mix paint (even though they think they can) - it is not low hanging fruit. It is not easy. You refine it over time. You obviously can’t run away from mixing completely but you want a place to start that’s going to set you up for success. I recommend a light green that you can darken or use as is

I appreciate the comment, but i never stated it will “magically get in your system”. Prolonged use of any toxic material on the surface of your skin does, in fact, get “ingested” over time and creates chronic exposure into the bloodstream. Add a little ultramarine, and you get a color very close to viridin. Add yellow or red to warm it up. @@etienne7774 well, i guess, i just re mix with the color to achieve the right hue? this has never happened to me and it might depend on the color its being mixed with, only happens to me with brigh reds that when desaturated (as you'll know white is just a very light gray) become pink which is natural, if i want it kept "brighter light red" i just add some yellow and it turns into a "bright light red", otherwise that's never happened to me, but then again it might be how m graham's titanium zinc white is made... but its all about mixing to match a color, wether to literally match off a reference or match what you have in mind for the area of the painting, i have never struggled and havent not succeded in both regards using titanium white,,, when it comes to as a mixer, and if dont believe me check Steve Huston's artwork or demos for example, titanium white is just perfect enough.

    lead white inhalation is a problem only in pure pigment form, you cannot inhale it once it's tempered with oil. Tiziano died at 100 years old, he was known to blend with his fingers.

    'scuse my Bluesgnrance, but who is the music by? Got that Peter Green vibe, but he inspired Santana, but its not a santana number. Peter Green late recording of Black Magic Woman- or a (very good!) cover?
