ALL THE WOSO!
Into The Channel is a show primarily focused on women's football. We watch the games, bro.
The show is hosted by Dino Decespedes and Grant Engle, two American blokes who love football and have found a way to enjoy as much of it as possible between their day-jobs and family lives.
They're not here to call players names or question their "heart" or "guts" like a couple of old-school talk radio jerks. They’re about enjoying and discussing the incredible skill and clever tactics from the world's most important matches, as well as finding humor and good stories along the way.

UEFA Women's Champions League is BACK! 🏆 UWCL Round 1 Champions Path & League Path Previews
Arsenal will play in Borehamwood, since men need emirates. The atmosphere will be intense. I predict Arsenal to win.
Gareth Taylor also said that Hemp might play against Chelsea, yet she ended up undergoing surgery just a few days later. This makes me question how reliable his injury updates are. There haven't been any updates on Greenwood besides what Gareth said, which doesn't feel very encouraging to me.
Barça 4 - 1 Man City and then Arsenal 2 - 2 Bayern München I wouldnt snob the consolation games. Sometimes great stuff happens - like yesterday the youngster that scored one and assisted one for Roma. I predict Juve 3 - 1 Valerenga and St Pölten 1 - 2 Hammarby
Barcalona man city 5-1
This season's group stage has been a bit flat for me. It doesn't mean that the women's game isn't improving rapidly, but progress is seldom even and then there's the vacuuming up of talent by the big teams. In this final round, apart from a couple of games to decide 1st and 2nd it's been mostly dead rubbers. No Paris FC's or Benfica's, PSG wasn't there to embarrass themselves, Roma did their usual but one round early this time. It would cap it all off appropriately if Chitty fall flat after pretending at the start of the group stage. Anyways, after the first half of round six, with no one really playing for anything too much: measuring Real Madrid by their performance in the last Clasico, they gave Chelski way too much for me to take the Blues seriously; and I fell asleep 1/4 way thru that Lyon-Wolfsburg thing so you'll have to tell me if anything much happened there.
Great preview guys! I I just think the injuries to Man City will be too much to overcome and I think Barca will win 3-0 and top the group. Can’t wait for the knockout stages. It would also be great to maybe see some Women’s Euros content next summer as the next big tournament.
2025 is setting up to be a great football year. We both predicted 3-0 Barca!! -Dino
My prediction for Man City - Barcelona is a "Desmond"...2-2
That would be massive!
Everytime you guys talk about barcalona I Crack up. Salma looked very good against betis let's ffing do this. Great content👌🏻

Looking forward to both OL/Wolfsburg and Madrid /Chelsea. Thx
One thing to watch in the Real Madrid Chelsea match is how Chelsea attacks Olga. I have a theory that these small converted attackers being successful at fullback will end up to be just a momentary blip in the history of women's soccer. Olga can't handle Graham-Hansen size when Real Madrid plays Barcelona. Graham-Hansen uses the arm bar against Olga like John Wooden used coach his basketball players. (I know the reference is too old. Sorry. That is what the matchup reminds me of.) Managers observed the mismatch. So in the first Champion's league match, Rameriz lined up more on the right to get the Olga matchup. Usually she attacks through the middle. It was why Nighswonger did not get many minutes at the Olympics. Everyone thought Leuchter against Nighswonger was a mismatch in the latest USWNT match because of Leuchter's size. It was why Sears is getting a look as Rodman's backup. Olga in my mind can hold her own against all the USWNT forwards except Rodman. I am curious to see if my hypothesis bears out.
chelsea isn't in the barcelona class .. there is barcelona and there is the rest of teams
I disagree, look at their head-to-head last year and tell me how Barca was on another level…
@PandaPanda-cn7yn even though barca played their worst games against chelsea last season they're still comfortably beating them on aggregate
that's why barca on another level
Thanks so much guys and please keep up the good work. Also do some reviews on the next year WEURO in Switzerland on all the 16 teams now that the group is out.
I was looking at purchasing tickets today and there were only 7 matches available and they were second class seats. Yikes! Are the Euros already sold out?
My current power rankings for UWCL is 1.Lyon 2.Bayern 3.Barcelona 4.Chelsea. Remember it's only my opinion. Peace out from Latrobe Pennsylvania ⚽🇺🇸
putting any team above barcelona is a crime .. everyone doubted them ended up losing
After the last match against Valencia i put Barca in this spot also. And I'm a Barca fan.Pere Romeu isn't Jonathan and the team sfor me struggles. They 9nly creating from the dide of CGH. Now they are gonna plsy without her.Lets sll see what they are going to do without her. PERE OUT ASAP. An useless manager gets to lead this group of extraordinary players. I hope they get rid of him.
@@ithan1977 we actually better than last season talking about performances .. even in that loss against city we were creating a lot of chances but we wasn't clinical enough .. i saw barca a litlle bit less motivated than last year and it's normal not because the coach is bad
How about Jonsdottir throwing down 4 for Wolfsburg? Made me think of the one on one matchups during recent Iceland/USWNT friendlies. Kudos to Sonnet, who I think not only held her own, but gave this talented up and coming striker all she could handle. Iceland just might catch someone sleeping this summer if Jonsdottir can continue to develop. Also, good call re Russo.
waiting for someone to explain to me how a couple of 30 years olds - huerta and horan - are supposed to be improving themselves and their games when their matches played in the vaunted and highly regarded UWCL end in 6-0 score lines with 70% possession, 33 shots for and 2 shots against when they go up against Galatasaray away. two players whose skills are falling away in an totally uncompetitive league right now just so they might get the chance to play in one (1) difficult two legged tie against maybe a good team before the season ends. riveting stuff. the game today - like many in this stage - was an unwatchable & totally uncompetitive display. support to you guys tho, of course.
This is a really great point and I think I agree with you. They get much more competition in training than they do in these games, but no real stakes in practice. I thought Cascarino to the Wave was an interesting measuring stick. -Dino
Perhaps you can clarify your point. No one's going to explain how players over 30 are going to improve their game in an uneven contest. Galatasary have earned their place and deserve the chance to prove or improve themselves against whoever they have earned the right to play. That's the nature of sport. At 30+ professionals do their job without expecting to have the opportunity or occasion to improve at the same rate that they did when they were 19. And, yes, at 30+ they may start falling off regardless of whether they are playing Galatasary, the Portland Galaxy or the Arsenal. That's what's called aging. The fashionable term these days seems to be "competitive". "Competitive" should not, however, be confused with "Quality". Two novices may be "competitive" but I don't find them particularly interesting to watch if they're not family or, at least, friends. On the other hand, if I'm a lover of the sport, I can be entertained (and maybe even edified) by a genius of that sport practicing and refining his skills against a bean bag.
Horan and Huerta may play for the same club, but I feel like they are there for different reasons. At the end of the day, Horans place with USWNT is secure for the foreseeable future regardless of where she plays, because Hayes values her Huerta was one of several casualties of the 2023 WC debacle, hasnt really gotten a sniff since, and so where she plays probably doesn’t additionally hurt her prospects, because they essentially don’t exist. She might as well go where her talents going forward can make a contribution.
I envision a midfield with Hershfeld, Yohannes, Bethune. With Horan, Albert on their way out.
Nighswonger got exposed big time. Juan Carlos Amoros saw that earlier in the season and benched her in favor of Mandy Freeman at Gotham. Also, it's time to move on from Horan. She's 31 and her performances have been abysmal for the past couple of years. We need to find her replacement ahead of the next WWC!
Barcelona is a little weaker in the back as you mentioned. Keep up the good work!
FC Bayern: they might need the forcing power of Sydney Lohmann, aside the scoring power of Klara Bühl and Lea Schüller. Haven't seen "Syd" for quite some time -> injured? It is important for them to win the group, just to circumvent teams like Barcelona, Manchester City, Chelsea or Lyon. I still think Arsenal has the better prerequisites to win the group.
Thanks again. Great work on both episodes. From the 'Cule' wall, I feel like we have everything to prove on matchday 6 vs Chitty. I don't fear Chelski or Lyon -- we've had questionable results against both, but always with a reasonable excuse. Against Chitty, yes, there was the Olympics hangover which still seems to be affecting Salma, but there was an element of being outplayed that never happens against Chelski or even Lyon. Myra is well known, she used to be a pain in the arse for Lavante too; and Lyon can push us around if we're not up for the fight; but Chitty, with Alexandri and Hasegawa, is a whole different beast. It'll be necessary to win and by a lot just to prove that the earth has not shifted on its axis. Forget coming second in the group. I don't doubt that we can beat Chelski in the quarters and Lyon in the semi-final and maybe Bayern to win it all, but that, ironically, would not be enough. Chitty raised a question in that game. I trust we wont be distracted against Hammarby -- the second half vs Real Betis was the worst I've seen the Femenino in some time -- then we'll see. The women's game is still in this strange time when there's one team all by itself (forever it was the USWNT and Lyon, now Barca) but these times are coming to an end.
Guys, your work is outstanding. Connecting various aspects of the game from different continents. Cheers. I have been watching women's football for 4-5 years now, especially WSL, UWCL, and Frauen Bundesliga. This year, I also watched my first NWSL full season. I have watched so many teams over the year, and I have found that big European teams will always have an edge over NWSL top teams in terms of talent, tactics, and game-play. When Chelsea and Arsenal came to the USA and played matches against Gotham and Spirit. You can clearly see the gap... I know people will say 'ohhh wait, some players were coming from the Olympics or whatnot'. Chelsea and Arsenal also just started their pre-season and used many academy players... imo, Tier at the World Level Tier 1 - Barcelona, Lyon, Chelsea Tier 2 - Bayern Munich, Manchester City, PSG, Wolfsburg, Arsenal , Orlando Pride Tier 3 - Roma, Spirit, Frankfurt, Gotham ,Real Madrid..... and so on
Oooo, bold predictions there, in favor of both Roma - to qualify over Wolfsburg - and of Chelsea - to win it all. 😅 I like the idea of an intercontinental tier list. Wonder how KC would fare against Arsenal, or Gotham against Bayern. But it'd be better if there was a tournament.
I’m not sure how I never noticed this before, but now it’s all I can see. Grant’s mic is totally phallic. It’s distracting me from the analysis! 😂
Hello guys! Lyon and Chelsea have the strongest benches in the tournament. Ciao 4 Now.
interesting fact based video assessments of women's soccer. Shadow Football (podcast). ruclips.net/video/4Dr-hvt0aWg/видео.htmlsi=kgo40Z8e_cYwcjkW
Hahaha, this was really well done, guys! Learned a fair bit and laughed a lot. Kudos to Peter for his patience and teaching skills. 🇩🇪
Also friegang loyalty to Frankfurt is gonna hurt her trophy's prospects
Only concern about Frauen bundesliga is Sydney lohmann she needs some solid starting xi team ... she's simply too good to be on bench I don't know why she extended her contract
Şehitler (with that Ş) is pronounced correctly "Sheitler" not as it's written. So german commentators pronounce it right. And Vivien Endemann is not a wingback (dont know what this guy is talking about) but winger with great 1v1 skills (also played as striker for Essen few years ago). Playing such creative player as wingback is waste of talent. Wolfsburg have necessary players to play as WBs although I dont think 343 is good for Wolfsburg. Good for Wolfsburg is to hire new and better coach.
That is a perfectly respectable take on Endemann; a player for whom I maintain enormous respect whatever position she happens to be playing. Odd that so many German sporting publications didn't spell Alara's name with the Turkish "Ş". That would have easily ensured that the PA announcers in Zürich and Bochum - not to mention myself and many a broadcaster - would have pronounced her name correctly! Yikes!
Great show as usual! Peter is a legend.
Always great to have Peter on the show, and it's always great to have you hanging with us, Carlo. Thanks for kicking it with us! - Grant
Thank you Peter. Cool to be able to broaden insight and coverage. Unrelated, shout out to Huerta, who started and played well for OL against Reims.
I put the game on in the background while I was working on something, and I looked up and saw Huerta setting up to deliver a throw-in and I had to double take. It's cool she's playing well, and it's safe to say she should fit in nicely. I'm eager to see her get more UWCL time. - Grant
In her postgame presser, Hayes talked about the Dutch flexibility of building out with 4 or 3. First, 10-15 minutes, the US is doing pretty well, but I think they switched to playing three in the back and outnumbered our midfield, which really helped the Dutch counterattack. Hayes said she brought on Sonnett to match their three in the back, and go five in the midfield, which really changed the balance in the second half. I think the Dutch didn't have the gas left in the tank to run the wide spaces with the midfield jammed up. Deliberate play up the sides is just going to create throws until turnovers, got to break fast that close to the touch line. I know this has turned into some pile on the European club midfielders in the team, but Emma pretty clearly showed the Dutch as an example of where she's trying to go in terms of tactical complexity.
Great points, especially about those tactical adjustments in the midfield. Really appreciate your insight on this one!
That was a black magic performance from the US. Unbelievable en Jonkers exposed alot of weaknesses in this twam tactically.football 101 in positional play.
I hated this four midfielders set up that we started with. It's the same midfield like in the final against Brazil, where we similarly got outrun by Brazil in the first half. Thankfully, like in this game, opponents where not able to capitalize on their chances.
Shaw will be the main back up for either trinity or Swanson in 2027 such a hardworking baller
I like this idea. I think she probably has the game to play well on the wing over time, even though I think she had a bit of a rough time with it during some of the pre-Olympics matches. Am I remembering that right? Either way, she likely just needs more reps out there because I agree with you that she profiles as a very good wing player. Thanks for rocking with the show and chiming in! -- Grant
Tall Girl Bias Forever & Always 💅🏻
At 5'3", Nighswonger was at a severe disadvantage against those taller Dutch women. She was getting bulldozed. Perhaps she needs to move to the midfield if she's best at being an attacking winger. Also, the USA certainly got a lot of practice defending corner kicks. Naeher is the only reason USA came away with a win. Probably should have been 5-1 in favor of the Dutch given all their chances.
It was just second season of Jenna playing as left back. She said that she hated position at first, but grew to love it. Last season she won ROY. I think this season she got exposed a bit with more film on her and she hit this slump. Unlike Crystal Dunn, who could rely on her pace to recover when her positioning was off, Jenna doesn’t seem to have the same speed to make up those crucial extra yards. This puts added pressure on her defensive instincts and skills, which need to be at an elite level for her to thrive in this role as a smaller player. A friend who attended a USWNT game mentioned being surprised at how tiny Jenna looks in person. Not to mention, NWSL season and last game against Spirit ended horribly for her so she clearly struggles with confidence now. The left back position is clearly wide open, and I’m still pulling for Jenna-there’s plenty of time for her to develop and make her mark, her crossing ability is the best on the team.
Jill Roord missed 3 big chances
Sorry guys, but I'm going to tell you what I think and hope not to get banned. This was as I expected; perhaps worse (from a USWNT perspective). On the Netherlands side, the usual: not really serious about winning anything. Having said that, I only really watched the first half an hour just now -- a real match between a half strength Spain and a full strength France was going on at the same time; half strength Spain whipped out full strength France 4-2 but full strength France had a few moments despite depending on a ridiculous own goal to get to 2. I know everyone will tell me the Barbie dolls were missing from the USWNT vs the Netherlands, but, be warned, not even Emma the Haze would be silly enough to play 3 of them at the same time against Spain with La Reina, Aitana, Patri and Mariona in midfield against Lindsey and co. She wouldn't even do it against the Netherlands or Germany. Against Spain and with the best women's non-Barca midfield available the dolls would be lucky to get one decent look in 90 minutes. As it was, how Jill Roord didn't have 3 or 4 goals just for herself by halftime is beyond me -- hopefully she plays like that for Chitty in the Barca return leg -- not that she'll be getting 3 or 4 chances to miss. She's typical of these Dutch forwards -- the more and the more easy chances they get, the worse they play. Give them one really difficult chance in a tough match and they come up with a blinder. Anyways, for what it's worth, that's my take on the first 30 minutes. My apologize.
Yaz has a fantastic game face. My new fav
Yonkers played this like a World Cup final, played his best 11, after resting most of them against China, and only one performative sub late in the game in a friendly? In Emma I trust! She is playing chess while the rest of us are simply playing checkers. She is learning about her team, giving folks experience while still winning. Freaking impressive!
On point, Russ. So much success for Emma thus far and it feels like she is barely scratching the surface.
When Lily, Hal, and Alyssa came in it was like Emma Hayes laying down a royal flush.
Perfectly said.
ha! yes, it's *almost* unfair. luckily for the US, they are on our side 😁
2-0 U.S. if Naeher plays a full match for her goodbye; Lily scores in the first half and Alyssa scores a stoppage-time penalty.
Hi guys, firstly, I hope that you guys had a good Thanksgiving. I lived in the USA for about ten years as a kid, and it really is a special time. As for the game, I really enjoyed it. This was one of England's better performances recently., although a lot of that was down to Mary Earps. Certainly compared to Alyssa Naher, who I think only had one saved to make. The US defense was outstanding. One thing that surprised me was when the commentators said that these were the top two FIFA ranked teams. I had no idea that England were ranked that high, especially after a lot of mediocre performances this year. But rankings schmankings, any of the top six or seven could beat each other on any given day. The US of course missed Triple Espresso, but the biggest miss for England was definitely Lauren Hemp. Before her injury, she was playing the best football of her career. Both Man City and England look almost ordinary without her. She was playing Ballon d'Or worthy type football. Jeez, I hope she can come back to playing like that again real soon. All the best to you guys. Love kicking it with you.
Yeah, this is a tough one to call, and probably very lineup dependent. I mean the Naeher situation alone could be interesting in regards to dynamic swings. If Uncle starts and comes off just after HT, which inexperienced keeper does Orange get to test then? And is Hayes testing newer center backs in front of Haught or Tullis-Joyce? What kind of shakeup does the starting forward group get? Should be interesting, no matter how it goes.
England - 0.07-0.40 xG (depending on which model you use) USWNT - 1.10-1.40 xG (depending on which model you use) wasn't that close of a match, really, gents. England had one (1) good 15 minute spell in the second half just after the weird and bad VAR check for a penalty and created nothing beyond a soft header from 10 yards out that dribbled into Naeher's arms. the field tilt is actually pretty insane and comprehensive (ref: sofascore). Sears and Horan are really the only two players you could point to on the US side and say they didn't make the most out of their starts. everyone else showed out and left England to (statistically) produce their most offensively anemic performance since Sarina joined up. pretty impressive for a bunch of NWSL players who just finished their seasons in the end. looking forward to Lilly and what this midfield combination looks like tonight now.
The Netherlands confuses me: I have my doubts about their manager. Going down 0-1 to China with 20 minutes to go before bringing on the cavalry to win 4-1 shows great courage and confidence, but it also shows that your second string is 1-0 worse than (a good) China (or maybe 1-1 even with) over more than an hour. Also, despite this being the home of Johan Cruyff, the women play a relatively transitional game and don't seek to control the game the way you'd think they might be capable of doing. This leaves their defense with a big job to do; one that I don't think they're up to. Apart from the goal (next years FIFA Best Marta Award winner), Esmee had a lot to say in these last 20 minutes against China. But, in football, it takes a team and I think the Netherlands sells themselves short.
THESE GUYS ? A DISGRACE TO OUR NATION......THERE JUST ENGCLOWN FANS WITH AMERICAN ACCENTS .....
The US look like the more dangerous and organized team all night. The way that the defense moved like a tactical unit was going to be too much for England to overcome. They way they cut off passes and stopped plays was beautiful. We should have won that game outright. That was disappointing. But I understand this is a necessary learning exercise for the younger players. It’s about exposure and international experience etc. I know you like LJames but buddy, even she wouldn’t have saved you the way that the US defense was playing. I knew England was in trouble when they dropped into that low block. They remind me how the US looked under Vlatko at the end: stagnant, in need of new talent and new ideas. I dont follow England closely but I heard the streets are talking about Sarina’s coaching so…🤷 Maybe not so surprising. Anyway the youngins look good. Im digging how Emma is building the team slowly. I fully expect a phase out plan for older players like Lynn, Lindsey and Rose. I believe their replacements are already in camp. Just think what this team will be with additions like Macario, Bethune, Fishel, Staub, Pruce etc. The future is bright. Can wait to see Lily at the Hauge
I think on-balance you're right about USA looking more dangerous for the entirety of the match. There were definitely moments where England was pinned back and had a hard time fighting off USA's press, but I thought they were usually able to get out of it before panic-time would set in. I have not heard the streets talking about Sarina's status with the team, so I'll keep my ear closer to said streets! You're right about the future looking bright for the Stars and Stripes. I think a key difference that I meant to hit during this show was that USA was clearly more comfortable playing their younger talent in this match. It seemed noteworthy that USA brought on Albert, Shaw, and Sentnor (even if it was only for a few minutes), who are all 21 or younger, and England brought on two vets in Kirby and Kelly (Kelly's not "old," but ya know what I mean). And you know we definitely agree about seeing Yohannes play in Holland. Should be a great moment. Thanks for rocking with us! -- Grant
Great stuff, guys, but I called it after the October camp: Sorry to be the first to inform you, but Jenna Nighswonger will not be starting in any meaningful games for Emma Hayes. Ever. Amoros dropped her for Freeman v Rodman. Hayes dropped her for Krueger v Naz. She, unfortunately would be the glaring weak-link in an otherwise dominating back 4 of all-world defenders. She would be targeted. Hayes has now officially come to this conclusion. I generally think your LJ theory is off-base, but if Hayes allowed a healthy LJ to go to work against Nighswonger, it's at least plausible. So, you can go ahead and preemptively scratch her from any future lineups you may be inclined to publish.
Credit where it's due, Dolph. I think you were the first person -- maybe the only person -- in the comment section who didn't think Nighswonger was going to get consistent playing time under Hayes. Whaddya think -- will she get left off future squads altogether? Let's say you're picking 23 players for the World Cup: Do you keep her on as a defender/midfield hybrid because of her passing, or do you think she's just too much of a defensive liability? Thanks for checking out the show. -- Grant
@IntoTheChannelPod If Krueger were 24, not 34, Hayes would be happy keeping the defensive third as a no-fly zone, and Nighswonger would be phased-out by SheBelieves. Long-term, I think it's an open competition until she finds a left-footed competent defender. Hayes could try Davidson there. Malonson and Vignola are still options. Or, Hayes may take on the project of converting a freak athlete like Ryan into a into a leftback/wingback. Nighswonger's future utility is still uncertain.
