after i installportmaster i dont have internet say Portmaster did not detect any network connectivity.
then you probably have some compatibility issue. typically its some VPN or AV (often with VPN) you can look into the debug info for more details,. also the wiki has some great resources to help you through this.
Can we play with the Beta in an Alpha (Cosmic) environment?
Hello. Hoping you could answer a quick question (well maybe 2, LOL!). 1) We use a DDNS service with a hostname/domain name. So when connecting remotely we use the assigned domain name. Is it possible to create a rule that allows connections only when connecting using that domain? I've tried nearly every possible combination that you list out in your incoming rules section, but no luck. 2) Also, is there a way to delete just one rule in a grouping--it seems that if two or three rules are grouped together, all have to be removed? Thanks in advance!
would love to help. But tbh yt comments are not ideal for things like this. Join our discord and ask in the help channel there :D
Greetings ! Is there any way to install portmaster on coreelec ?
I have no experience with coreelec, and it is not officially supported, you can always try though :D
this very interesting program, it would be good if you had the option to put it in spanish or in another language.
Multi Language is something we would want to do in the future as well. But there is no timeline for now.
Hagan el programa en español por favor
Since the SPN obviously adds latency i can still watch 4k HDR content from Netflix. Using CTRL ALT SHIFT D confirms this as it shows every aspect of what you`re getting from Netflix at any given time. If im downloading a large game patch, i toggle off SPN and with a GIG connection up and down the patch downloads very fast, once done i turn SPN back on. Portmaster isn't perfect, one example is the refresh rate of the network activity NEEDS to be configurable or at least increased drastically. But from what i understand Portmaster is still in its infancy and i respect what they have accomplished so far with the SPN. Im excited to watch this product grow and ive subscribed to pro for a year to help support the development. Thank you Portmaster/SPN team!
Super cool Feedback. Thank you! Regarding the download. Why do you disable spn for the whole pc and not just the application that downloads? If you trust that domain and it’s the same every time you can also just exclude the single domain from spn
appreciate the rambling, but also appreciate brevity. personally i like the more unfiltered raw videos that are as long as need be, but not longer ;)
Thank you for the feedback
anybody who has never built their own account or payment service will never understand…given limited resources, i’m impressed that your redisgn will still be self hosted tbh. personally i think features like mobile support would be a higher priority.
i know these videos dont have a lot of views, but as someone looking into portmaster and opensnitch they’re very useful so thank you 😀
always appreciate leaving in surprises or “mistakes” in videos like this 😀👍you mention replacing electron discussion… be nice if you linked to it as well
What link is missing?
@@SafingIO to the live stream discussing electron. i found it eventually it was on feb 22nd (but i also listened to march 7th and have the latest on in the background now :)
Acoustic panels?
Tem como instalar no Android ?
A tiny bit off topic, but, those thumbnails you guys use. AMAZING.
I just downloaded and installed your app; however, it is indicating that the Device is Offline. I don't see where there is a setting to turn this on or off. Please advise.
Probably a compatibility issue with another app such as antivirus or vpn (installed is sometimes enough, the vpn software does things even when it’s turned off)
@@SafingIO I've allowed the entire Safing folder on the C:\drive but still to no avail.
is there a way to set Force Block Incoming Connections to Force Prompt Incoming Connections or is this a feature that can be added in the future? Everything else looks good as far as what I am looking for in this product
Great vibes! Looking forward to learn more about this protocol.
The question about paying for Plus monthly could be a result of the checkout page not being clear. The page indicates you can select a number of months to pay for with the default being 1 month and the Purchase button looks clickable even thought clicking it has no effect. Not until you click the discount area, which seems optional, does the text change to how many years.
thank you for the feedback. I assumed that most people would have chosen on the website and not in the checkout... and I believe it remembers what you picked there.
@@SafingIO Yes on the website the choice is clear, but by the time you get to the checkout page, the yearly aspect has been "forgotten". I just tried it again and the check out shows monthly, asks you how many months, and defaults to 1 month.
The import/export mentioned here as a soon-to-be-released feature has come in handy for app profiles that have a lot of rules. I'd copy the export to the clipboard and use a remote desktop tool to paste into the import window.
super great use case. you can also edit some settings in there quick. Keen in mind if you change something in there you also need to delete the checksum at the bottom
I agree that PortMaster free provides a lot of value. Having played with it now, I also agree that the network history is a feature worth paying for and it's a good place to draw the line for the first paid tier to support future development.
It's fun hearing about the major features you planned to add and knowing that you did :-) And you were right that the history module is a big deal.
for me it is fun to read your comments going through the backlog, this was always part of why we wanted to have them on yt, so they can stay up for long... But tbh I haven't watched any of them back. are you on our discord? if not, it would be super helpful if someone is on there knowing what we said in the past 😅
The learning mode you two described sounds very helpful, but as you said the backlog is long :-)
Portmaster is a must have program for me. Thanks for the work. I do have a question though and it's probably a dumb one, but when I boot and look at Portmaster, Microsoft Edge has like 30 something connections. I never use edge, don't even open it or have a shortcut so I block it. I'm guessing that's telemetry? or something? Is this a bad idea? or are Microsoft being creepy af?
No that is a good idea, my edge is blocked by default. again thank you for the kind words!
@@SafingIO Nice. Thanks guys!
Thanks for the awesome app guys!
I’m glad you like it -r
Privacy is important, but I think many of those people looking into PortMaster are entering the "journey" from a stronger interest in security. That's why there are often comparisons with tools like simplewall and glasswire i.e. firewalls. Your customers might be telling you their interest by their choice of Plus vs Pro. Subscribers with Plus may actually represent the security-centric folks. The Plus subscribers may not just be people that want to support you or just people not able to afford Pro.
I get your point, and if we would want to optimize for growth above everything we might make more changes, but privacy is the goal. We see that there is value in adding more security oriented features as well. Portmaster is a security product don't get me wrong, but the defaults are set for privacy.
does portmaster support DNSSEC also? when I use dig to check the DNS response it doesn't have the DNSSEC response additional fields?
it does not we support dot and doh. What need would DNSSEC fulfill for you that dot or doh don't do?
@@SafingIO I was just curious to know if it is supported since DNSSEC is a way to authenticate the DNS server's responses.
If you add the ip address and the verify label then Portmaster does check if the server is correct. and of course tls as well as https do make sure the response has not been tempered with.
This was a great discussion and I like the Q&A format with one of you asking and the other answering. There might not be a huge audience for deep-dives like this, but I certainly appreciate them. I've only recently learned about DNS over TLS and I was glad to see that it's a feature of PortMaster since it's not natively supported by Windows 10.
I learned about a feature from this old stream. I had no idea I could combine apps to work as a single entity. Awesome!
thank you for the feedback... there are probably a couple features we need to highlight better 😅 one other thing not a lot of people know: you can press "ctrl" and then click to copy on almost any field in Portmaster
You are doing a great job guys! 😁
thank you!
At 2:45 you mentioned that without a VPN the IP and DNS/websiteURL is not encrypted. True, but the actual data is via HTTPS/TLS. I prefer a direct faster and lower latency connection using a "burner phone" with no name or any info on file and change it once a month. ;)
Which of course is work on your end, but interesting approach, not possible in all countries as Europe requires KYC for mobile plans. Also we are thinking about making combining multiple internet connections an option, so your traffic gets split between the ISPs - that would also increase the available speed.
Maybe the idea was already outspoken, but can you add a funktion to allow a Domain/Connection etc. temporarly. Like the NOSCRIPT addon for Firefox for example. Sometimes i want to visit a webside only once and have to allow the domain. It would be cool if the rule exaption would turn back after about 10 - 15 minutes or untill Poortmaster gets restarted. Thank you for this good tool.
Adding such an option would fit when we touch the prompting system again. We are currently working on the backend of the ui system where we are moving a couple features into the same system. New prompts with more options are something we would be looking into.
Great breakdown. Question how much latency does spn add to connection?
There is an effect on latency, but it is minimal, and for normal use you should not feel it. Because of how each rout is calculated for each connection things like speed tests are not a good source on telling you what you can expect... since it only reflects that one rout
@@SafingIO ok thanks
Any time you have any extra servers between you and the website, there will be some extra inherent latency, no way around it. It's a privacy trade-off, except if you're using a direct connection with a "burner phone". ;)
I hope this video is a start into better visualizing what we do differently. There is more to how VPNs can get attacked with pattern matching and so on... where the local isp your pc is connected to can actually know more, and I initially wanted to get into that as well, but, that would have been a much longer video. Also SPN does protect more then what is shown in the video, but again, that would have been a much longer video. So I hope this is a great stepping stone into other explanations, so please let me know what you would want to know more about. Here is ok and on YT.
At 6:35 VPN companies be like "Trust me bro, we're not logging anything!" Riiiiiiight! lol So basically an SPN is a channel aggregator breaking down the packets into smaller bits through different servers, then reassembling it at the user's device.
@@BillAnt not sure how you interpret channel aggregator in this case. With SPN your internet connection that typically would originate from your PC is broken down and resembled at both ends of SPN, Your PC and the exit node. With a VPN the connection ordinates 100% from your PC and is only piped through the VPN, which is why they have to be concerned about leaking and such - when a packet "leaks" from the pipe it is still a 100% valid connection.
My VPN can't connect to internet when using Portmaster, it says DNS error ... Do I have to add my VPN domain as an exception into the Portmaster DNS setting somewhere, if so, how and what exactly do I have to do? thx
depending on the VPN client there are different settings you need to change. you can find guides here: wiki.safing.io/ there is also an extended one for proton VPN just use the search bar
Try Nobara Linux maybe for some Fedora~Nvidia gaming
Yes I used to run nobara, but when he made the switch to plasma my whole desktop flickered and was unusable... I might look into it again
@@SafingIO oh I see, hopefully you can find something that works 🙂
Question: Is it possible to manualy target and ad.. like the zapper in Ublock Origin?
the functionality you are talking about would have to be implemented in the browser, not on the system level. The ad should not show up if it is served though an ad vendor. But sometimes you still see the empty box, this is due to Portmaster not interacting with the web page but only the network traffic. we will need a browser extension to accomplish that, which might happen in the future.
This program looks good but in practice it is useless. I need to have a clear message that a program wants to connect to the internet. In this window there should be an option to remember setting permanently for the whole program, otherwise I get 1000 requests for every firefox connection to the Internet. To grant it total access I have to open options and only set allow there. Pointless. No one will want to do such a job, even though the program is beautiful and has a lot of options. Even the biggest computer whizzes will eventually get discouraged when they are forced to set settings for the program every time a new program requests Internet access.
you changed the setting from default allow to prompt. If you are using Portmaster in prompt for all apps that is what you are in for, but what we recommend doing instead is going in and allowing the apps you trust, blocking the apps you don't and prompt only the few you actually want to prompt like this. For browsers there are other options built into the browser we recommend using, things like µMatrix I hope the guides help you to setup Portmaster in the way that works best for you, if you found the defaults confusing, let me know
How to enable local (Lan) connections? Allow button is disabled there..
Distorted and blurred text in UI on nvidia GPU systems. It's a shame that this issue has not been fixed yet. Not sure about AMD gpus.
Well I tried Portmaster and is really useful, sadly it seems it lacks some more control over the "Force Block Incoming Connections" bypass, I have AgentDVR running withc uses WebRTC and Portmaster simply blocks access to it and I have no way to enable it. There should be a simple Override to the "Force Block Incoming Connections", for example, simply allow all incoming connections to a specific port or port range. If there is this option I can't find it.
Hey, I am a bit confused, where in the video did I loose you? the process is as simple as disabling FB incoming connections, finding the connection and then setting up the rules in simple steps... If I better understand what you did not understand, I can improve for the future :D
Awesome people. Awesome program. Now let's do our part guys. Donate if you can but at least, raise awareness about this masterpiece of a firewall. The more people learn about this tool, the stronger it will become.
Thank you for your support!
Amazing!
Thanks!
Dear Raphael & the fantastic Safing development team, Thank you for this amazing product. I finally found the precise control I needed for all my apps. I was stuck with Comodo Firewall for 8 years, but now I have found the best alternative in every way. I am thrilled with the level of control available (especially when it comes to controlling outgoing connections). I will soon subscribe to the Plus plan. Please continue the excellent work. Thank you again.
Thank you for the kind words! -R
thank you subs to the channel :-)
What happens if I have installed software such as Portmaster, Simplewall, WinUtil or any software that changes the settings in Windows 10 etc and the software gets uninstalled or deleted (for whatever reason), will Windows automatically default to the previous settings, ..... if the answer is no will it be necessary to reinstall the software (Portmaster etc) to be able to make the required changes........???? Thanks.
Can’t use it. The app gives me blue screen of death
I just recently found your app and I must say, you guys are amazing, the UI is easy to use and shit just works when I block something. Thank you.
No complaints about “Just Things”. I have trust in your efforts towards us all.
Does have blocklists for ip ranges, gov ip addresses, etc
Can you please define and show examples of what exactly is INCOMING Connections? ie. Google Chrome - when you access the internet and you get/download data/files from a website, isn't the data/files you download to your computer consider INCOMING? Thx!
