100mi, 10,000ft | Jet-lagged and dominated this ride
I've been meaning to share my jet-lagged, century ride experience back in the bay 24hrs after returning from 3 weeks of gravel riding in Slovenia, Croatia, and France last year. Our bodies are fascinating when it comes to recovery and adapting to continuous stress (within reason). Grizzly Peak Century is a challenging course but is so worth it for the food and scenery. Check them out!

    Another great video with practical tips! Suggest doing your chain waxing routine/tips video in a small apartment! I've hesitated to wax because of this reason and the seemingly extra effort for topping up the wax and to clean/re-wax without an outdoor space to use. Cheers!

    I would pick a more practical bike. Because why not? There's plenty bikes with roadbike/ gravel geometry but that come with a rack and fenders, sometimes luggage space on the fork too. Using the heavier sturdier bike and the puncture safe tyres and bringing lots of water and so on slows you down but wont make you any less fit.

    Great list, I especially like 10. Group rides are a good way for beginners to get information, clothing, tools, routes, and with busy lives making a date can get you out there. Solo rides take more motivation ( at least for me ).

    Glad you're doing ok. Last year I travelled to Colombia on a cycling adventure and a freak accident led me to hit the ground extremely hard and I broke my arm. Three hours away from the nearest hospital... First bone I've ever broken! I got it all fixed up and then flew home. Was told to stay off the bike for at least a few weeks, but could gradually make my way back. Zwift was a godsend at this point, being able to work the legs without needing to use my arm. About a month later I was back outside for the first time and it felt great. I hope your recovery goes as well. These things happen, but great that you're able to move on

    Compelling story.although years of audax experience tried out a gravel event in tuscany this year. Found it to be a very uncomfortable experience. Risk of a fall much higher than on tarmac and jarring brooks saddle killed me.. lack of traffic one consolation.

    I have discovered SQLab saddles and use them now on all my bikes in combo with SQLab undershorts (i wear bike shorts or pants over them). The padding is thinner than usual for Chamoix but it was a game changer for me. I used to suffer from soft tissue pain, now i can ride for hours without pain.

    I’m glad you survived the crash ok. Unfortunately, unless you live in a bubble THINGS will happen (that’s why many of us enjoy the experiences we do.) If you keep doing what you’re doing that uneasy feeling will diminish in time (after all , we are designed for self-preservation). One day you’ll look back at this as a war story you’ll share with your friends over drinks (or whatever) after you’ve sped down Mt. Tam in a Personal Best. Stay well and enjoy your time on 2 wheels.

  • @dolittle6781

    Exactly right on all counts. But almost no average person should be riding a bike for more than say six or seven miles nonstop on a given day. Bikes were never made for long rides-25 to 100 or miles per day. That’s why our bodies rebel with pain and soreness and other discomforts. We travel too far on our bikes! I know. People ride long distances all the time, and those are usually the folks that need all kinds of accessories and gear to endure the punishment that comes with such long rides. Bike fitters could just be the cycling industry’s way of manipulating people into thinking that long bikes rides are okay when in fact the chronic pain and to some extent soreness are signs the body is disapproving of what you are doing to it. The fitters are saying you’ll be fine if you fit your bike better. Will they ever tell you to take shorter rides? I don’t think so! The industry sells more bikes by keeping you on your bike for as long as possible. Yes, minor adjustments here and there are often necessary and perfectly fine. Still 5 to 15 miles every other day on a bike that fits you is good enough. Do other sporting activities to stay fit. Variety is the spice of life! Cycling should be fun not painful. Of course we are all different so I’m not surprised when I hear about someone cycling across Asia to Europe or Alaska to Argentina!

    It would be helpful to hear about whether it's possible to use the photo capabilities without using the internet search capabilities. Also is there proprietary app to take the files off the glasses and onto a phone or laptop?

    • @bikewithcarolin
      @bikewithcarolin 21 день назад

      yes , you can use the photo/video capabilities without being connected to the internet. there's a "meta view" app that imports files off the glasses onto your phone so it does consume storage space on your phone once its imported.

    I noticed that you were wearing these with a visor under your biking helmet. Does the visor ever appear on the video because of the wide angle? My helmet has a visor and I’m worried it might show up on videos.

    • @bikewithcarolin
      @bikewithcarolin 21 день назад

      Good question and I see the concern-it depends. cycling caps have smaller brims than regular hats so it rarely interfered. there is a chance your visor could peek in while recording if it's on the longer side.

    Thanks, but two items: (1) Tire bead jack (bead breaker) -- I've ridden and worked on bikes for 50+ years and NEVER used, needed or had one. Proper use of tire irons eliminates that tool. (2) "Plastic tire irons" is an oxymoron; so now they're "levers". Used properly, tire levers do not slide; hence the proper number of levers is THREE. I do not carry levers on any but my road bikes; the 35+ mm tires will pull off and onto rims. The 23 to 28 mm tires on my road bikes will not -- so levers for those. [Indeed, my Continentals have wire beads.] I watched one rider in a road group break all 3 of his plastic levers (and not on wire beads), while I pulled out my metal ones which got the job done. FYI, I ride as much as 133 mi. in a day, 270 in 4 days, etc., so I've had occasion to use my tool kit.

Canada has a lot of nice mountain bike trails, also some good road biking, however i only mountain bike so i can't really tell you the best road bike routes in Canada. I am back in Europe at the moment and already miss the Vancouver Island bike trails. once all my surgery is finished i might go back as apparently the cows are missing me haha. keep up the good work and making awesome videos :)
