If I may add another comment. This novel is a pornographic presentation of India and its society. Novel is over written to drill in ugliness for the purpose of tantalizing. I guess porno experts love this and awarded awards to popularize vulgarity among the general reader. I would not recommend reading by anyone. The author is talented but so what. He himself needs to find the right balance.

This guy gives a good review of novel.Im half way through book. Novel is dense, difficult read. I just happened to know a little bit of India and its billions of people. So for me it makes sense to read and enjoy book. But I would not recommend novel to general public. One aspect of novel is to make reader live the life of abject poverty and degradation. I don’t think the general public needs to do this. Novel would have been better if it had more respect for the general reader. India is already known to have vicious , ugly poverty and unjust cast system and crazy politics. One doesn’t need to read this novel to have all this rubbed into one’s face.

I read his book A fine balance..really find it a very timely novel. I always watch your videos. Really important. I am having trouble finding the other two books of Mr. Rohinton Mistry. Those two books are Such a long journey,Family matters..If you can find a copy of one of these two books, let me receive it.I will give you the address....

I just finished this book and I feel like I should be weeping but I instead feel kind of numb. Without giving away spoilers to other people watching this, it's sort of like the book has imprinted the confused and lost desensitisation that the character who you mentioned had taken their own life felt during the chapters surrounding it. Everything about the book is so harrowing and it is just a bombardment of pain and sorrow that by the end, you're just accustomed to it and accept it. I don't know if that's what Mistry had in mind when he wrote it or if it's what you felt when you finished it but it's certainly what I feel right now at two o'clock in the morning with this mammoth of a book sat next to me with nothing left to give.
