Angelina Jordan | All of Me (Billie Holiday) | A Virtual Duet
Angelina Jordan is amazing, and an inspiration to many. She inspired me to start to learn the joy of singing, never having done so before the summer of 2023; not to mention stepping outside of comfort zones, including taking on new creative challenges. For some reason, Angelina's July 2022 live performance of All of Me (Billie Holiday version) had me singing along many months ago, which evolved into this attempt at a duet - which isn't based on any known duet of this song. On April 8, 2024 a total solar eclipse was visible from a large swath across the United States. While this Angel didn't make it into the path of totality, I did view the eclipse from our home in the lower Hudson Valley of New York, and it was stunning. Thank you Claude. I didn't model this duet on any one jazz recording, but after I started experimenting with this, I realized the last 30 seconds of Summertime with Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong has him singing in an 'echo' (maybe there is a term for this style?) duet. Perhaps I had heard it before and it unconsciously became the primary influence!

Very Brave Steve! I think Angelina is safe for now, but keep on practicing. That's what Angelina has been doing for over 10 years and look at how she has improved over the years.

Wow, Steve, this took some guts to do something this challenging. Very brave of you for putting yourself out there like that. Anyone singing along with Angelina might feel inadequate on so many levels. Two big thumbs up for doing something really hard like this. The only way I would sing along with Angelina is playing her music while I'm in the shower with no one around! I'd be too scared! Good for you Steve! 😀👍👍👍
Thanks Ronald. I of course did not do this to imply my beginning singing is even in the same universe as Angelina's ... it was more to challenge myself creatively and step (pretty far!) out of a comfort zone. And of course I adore Angelina and her music and now vocal jazz. The outdoor concert performance also felt like it had a bit more room for someone to join - I don't think I would even attempt to sing along with a studio recording. PS I expect to hear a shower sing-along recording from you one of these days. 🙂

@@aryachow omigosh. Someone else suggested that. It's one thing to do this in front of just a camera and tripod, after lots of practice. Whole other kettle of fish in front of an audience much less next to Angelina! But, let's see, if she promised to sing All of Me exactly the same way as in Nov 2022, with the same musical arrangement .... naahh, she never sings a song the same way twice! 🙂🙂.

Good for you, Steve. You should get together with Pontus for a duet. He was also inspired to start singing because of Angelina. I think he may have even taken singing lessons. @@Bronxlenny3591 Thank you Len. I've listened to a small number of jazz duets, there's one of Ella and Louis that this is somewhat similar to. Mostly I just did what I thought sounded about right to me.
