This channel is where I post computer hardware and occasionally software projects I'm interested in. I'll also post some non-related content. So, far, it has been a lot of Thinkpad or Coreboot/Libreboot projects, and occasionally some older computer hardware I find interesting. Alongside my normal content, I'll occasionally write a program, or do an odd OS setup like OpenBSD on 90s hardware. Although for most the builds I install Debian Linux with a debootstrap script.

After setting it up I programmed a cellular automation on the system that generates an animation, similar to my umpc video. Also for some reason google is the default search for Netsurf.

how can i sample the sounds..
Pick up a new hobby, heh?
I think so, old camera lenses are pretty fun :D
Are the lenses able to work with Canon cameras with an adapter like that?
There are Canon to Minolta adapters on Thingiverse, so it should work. No guarantees though, I don't have a Canon camera to test it with. If it is Canon ef mount, you will probably lose focus to infinity though :c
Appropriate because Minolta pretty much became Sony's camera division haha.

Hello, just trying to try libreboot something. Can you recommended laptop which i can easily do all stuff?
If you want to flash internally the t60 is relatively inexpensive, but make sure to get an intel one. If you want something more modern I'd recommend a x220 or x230, but these laptops aren't completely blob free and require an external device to write the flash memory. So, you will need a programmer, used raspberry pi's work well for that and are pretty inexpensive.
Hi all. Absolute noob here. Are there any good tutorials and documentation on how to do this on my W541?
I'd check the hardware maintenance manual and the documentation on the coreboot website. There is also some posts online now for configs etc... The w541 was a little bit more complicated then the T or X series, but it can be done in a weekend or two.

Tripcode is back !
watching these to feel better about killing my r500 while trying to put coreboot in it :(
If I see a new tripcode video, I will always watch it first before I watch anything else. :)
*Grampa shakes fist at cloud moment* That was (or rather a slightly different 760) was my first laptop. I started undergrad in 1999 and as the first semester was coming to a close, I asked my dad (who worked in dev ops administering SGI systems for a large printing company, so he was savvy) if he could look around for a basic laptop that I could take the class/the library. At the time, they were *rare* as in none of my peers had them and only a few upper-classmen had them. He said he would look. So for Christmas 1999, I got a Thinkpad. It was a former corporate one that was reconditioned. It was a bit more spec’ed. I think a Pentium 133 with like 64 MB of RAM if I recall (my main rig was a P2 200 or so with 128 MB I believe and a sweet sweet Voodoo 2 card, even though lower powered was not garbage for writing and surfing). It had a PCMCI Ethernet and modem card, so I could just set up shop at the library and work for hours, albeit long or back-to-back lectures would require some recharging/pugging in during class. The first thing I did was put Linux on it. Debian, I believe. My main rig was running Linux of some sort or another and I had a dual boot just for some games, albeit Quake had a native Linux port (still have the discs), and I was into console emulation since high school So in going back in January, everyone was like “Whoa! That’s awesome!” Not because it was super powerful, but because I could just type my notes in class and work directly in the library. The next school year, I started seeing more around campus (especially those iBook G3s, as the campus computer store was Apple-based) and by senior year and grad school, a sizable chunk had laptops. A few people I knew personally did the same thing and found a used one from a reseller, since taking notes was not the most intensive use case. Loved that machine. Ran it into the ground in 4 years. Was gifted a brand new Dell Inspiron (which as admittedly more powerful with a bigger screen) for graduation from undergrad, but even though it was objectively better, was not as endearing as the chunky old Thinkpad. I think I may have recycled it in like 2005-2006, since I stopped using it even for goofing around by then (and it was thrashed and glued together in places). I even remember visiting my then girlfriend’s parents’ house over winter break in like 2002 and playing FF3 (6) on a Super Nintendo emulator on that trip. The girlfriend is now my wife of nearly 20 years. Such a cool little nugget. I still have affection for underpowered Thinkpads. I have an X220 which was my daily driver for ages (which needs a new battery), although I use it rarely these days. I also have an X40 running FreeDOS (which I tweaked with USB drivers to transfer docs on and off a thumb drive and that I modified with a USD-C PD trigger board, so it charges with a modern laptop charger) which honestly I use at least weekly and sometimes daily as my distraction free writing machine.
The x40 setup is a pretty cool system especially with the USB-C, and I appreciate the story I imagine it was a great daily laptop back then :D
It's been a while, tripkun and you stil been rockin to this day! A very lovely Christmas video!
Thanks :D
neat
Great to see a new video, your dedication to these great machines is so refreshing. I thoroughly enjoy watching you refurbish and modify these Thinkpads. Happy New Year 🎉
Thanks, and Happy New Year as well :D
Hey, there, tripcode! I have found your channel through a meme review you made in collab with Luke Smith. I would like to know if it's still possible to find it somewhere, as it seems to be missing from Luke's channel. I understand if you feel embarassed for some of its content and decided to not have it public anymore, but then again, it's a video I enjoyed and that brought me here, I'd like to rewatch it. Thanks for showing us that old tech is far from dead, you are much inspiration, I believe, not just to me.
I wasn't able to find the live stream, but Luke Smith didn't private or unlist the laptop video. I'm sure someone out there archives Luke's channel though.
very cool
Thanks :D
I also have the same thinkpad, I lucked out with a fully working unit, even battery! I bough additional 80mb of ram and industrial 2gb PATA drive for it, to try and install some extremely light weight Linux like TinyCore. It's weird to see windows 95 working with full gui while you cant run most linux distros. It's actually usable in a spreadsheet class, as ms Excel 1997 is a proof of ms unneccessarly inceasing bloat in newer versions.
That's pretty cool, I haven't used spreadsheets much except for an accounting class years ago. Generally I find ram to be the constraint with running modern linux distributions on older machines, that and alot of them dropped i586 support :c I think netbsd might work with 32mb, but I haven't tried it yet.
@@tripcodeQ7 yeah, ram usage is pretty high on new Linux compared to period correct software, (Win 95,98 and Red Hat 5.0 for example), but that old software actually uses more swap than real RAM. Today I finally have the time to test some distros at the 40mb of RAM my machine came with.

hey i found ibm thinkpad r50 for very very cheap but without the 16v adapter i wanna ask if its ok to use the 20v adapter pls let me know and sorry for the ignorance.
The barrel jack won't fit, and if your planning on adapting another adapter, I would try to get something closer to 16v. I know some of the older panasonics are a direct fit and 16v.

Hello, excellent video, I have a question, I have my T420 without core boot, it keeps the original bios, it has a total of 2TB of storage on 2 solid drives of 512gb and a 1TB disk, 16 GB of RAM and I have also upgraded to a Core I7-2860QM (4 cores and 8 threads), the base frequency of 2.5 ghz and the maximum of 3.6ghz, and it works without problems, at temperatures between 40 to 60 degrees, it is very similar to the Core I7-3632QM that your computer has. One of the advantages that I saw when comparing these processors is that the Core I7-3632QM supports 3 monitors, vs the 2 that the Core i7-2860QM supports. Basically this is one of my office work and multimedia playback laptops on a Linux distribution. Do you think it is worth changing the factory bios to coreboot?
Should i buy the X220 for programming in python, C, C++ and bash and for learning linux or i lean toward X230
@@godfatheryt7626 just use the computer you have :D if you want a cheap Linux box though it isn't a bad option, although I'd recommend a t420 at the moment.

Hi. W540 can run coreboot/libreboot?
I am not sure about libreboot, but coreboot probably works on the w540. :D It seems people have compiled working roms using the w541 option. I haven't tried it myself, but I imagine the two models are pretty similar.

I heard libreboot now has proprietary blobs. Is canoeboot available for the x200 and x220?
@@Richninjaa I think the x200 is, but I'm not sure if libreboot contains proprietary blobs for the core 2 duo systems. It was blob free in the past on those platforms and compiling coreboot for most of them does not require proprietary blobs. There are exceptions though the ati t60s for example need a vgabios to work properly. You need a few blobs to get sandybridge, ivy bridge, haswell etc... working though. So, I imagine the x200 is supported by canoeboot, but not the x220.
