1989: The Beginning of Vinyl's Dark Age
Просмотров 760Год назад
1989 was a fantastic year for music. From pop to rock to country to metal, there was great stuff for everyone. Sadly, it also spelled the beginning of vinyl's dark age which would last throughout the 90s and all the way to the mid 2000s. Here, I'm showing all of the original 1989 pressings I have and talking about them as well. I hope you all enjoy! #1989 #vinylcommunity #vinylrecords

The reason why Cozy Powell wasn't invited to rejoin Black Sabbath after Tyr, is because of shady label deals. I.R.S was a sinking ship, they coerced Tony Iommi into an attempted reunion of the Heaven and Hell era line-up, so they could all make more money, thinking it would save the label. This is not the first time a record label has taken advantage of Tony Iommi. When Tony was finished with Sabbath in around 82/83, after Dio left, Iommi was ready to start his solo career, that first record for Tony's solo career would have been "Born Again" > hence the namesake of the album title. Iommi already had that album written, another vocalist in mind, however, due to added pressure by Warner Bros. Records, he recruited Bill Ward, Geezer Butler back in the band, alongside Ian Gillan - who was only doing this as a favor to Tony. Due to the pandemonium of "Born Again" , with Geezer, Bill at the helm, it caused hype, rumor of Ozzy rejoining Black Sabbath. After the "circus" that was "Born Again", Iommi was ready to finally start his solo project, it was going to be called; "Seventh Star". However, it turned out that Iommi had owed Warner Bros. Records one more album, so it was released under Warner Bros. Records as another Black Sabbath record. As Tony had no plans to continue on as Black Sabbath, he started once again looking for members to join his new outfit. Ray Gillen originally replaced Glen Hughes halfway through a tour, which is how he managed to appear on the demo version of "Eternal Idol", the way it was on thos demos, was how it was going to sound as a fully produced album. When Tony Martin stepped in he didn't really change anything at all. The reason why the Eternal Idol is often left out in re-releases is because it was on a different record label with Universal/Vertigo. As they released the Headless Cross, Tony Iommi saw the potential for Black Sabbath to pick up where Dio left off, however, by the time Tyr was released, I.R.S records was in financial ruins, hence you get the subsequent Dio reunion, without Cozy Powell. It was the record label's ploy to try and pull record sales, however, fans had lost interest in Black Sabbath by the time they released Dehumanizer. Dio wanted out, Tony Martin was invited back to rejoin, Cozy Powell came back in 1994-1995. He was also working with Brian May, opened for Guns N' Roses, also played with Peter Green, Yngwie Malmsteen, which was more financially lucrative for Cozy as this point, since he was working some office jobs in-between. This lead up until his passing in 1998, also having an affair with a marrieed woman, until his death in 1998.
Thanks for the info!
@@analogwavelength I wish Tony Martin, the other guys around the Sabbath camp, during that time period would do more interviews. I did come across one interview from a dude in New Zealand, I think it was called "The Sick Room Radio", where he interviewed Tony Martin, and apparently Tony said that the reason why it was awkward for him to front Sabbath, was because of the age gap, it goes into real details about a lot of issues. Thanks for the video upload, supporting Tony Martin. He's so underappreciated
And you have one of the best unboxing previews I've seen and appreciate seeing the original pressing of those albums that was awesome hopefully you'll do some more album previews
He originally remixed that album in 22 but didn't have a label for it at the time
Most diehards are staunch Ozzy Osbourne Sabbath albums and don't buy anything else
Yes Tony Martin is a great singer and cozy Powell is a legend
Great boxer love it the music sounds great on it
Amazing to see that these records survived in such great condition, glad to see they are cared for, many hours of great listening experience!
Good job ken from England just got to your page please it coming . Thank you. Ps have say your LPs are in great order.
Would reaaly like to see his system that he listens to these great jazz albums on!
I really really enjoyed this. So many amazing Blue Notes. I was really floored by that copy of City Lights Lee Morgan, that one gies for $4000 nowadays. Also loved when you said you think Roll Call is every bit as good as Soul Station, I was like "finally someone agrees with me!" Haha
Thanks for watching!
Nice, probably the greatest OG Blue Note video I ever saw
Thanks for watching!
I love all these videos so far. I love the stories and anecdotes so much. picked up a lot of good recs from this, thank you!
Thank you very much for your first three videos. I hope to see more in the future should you get around to uploading some.
Same here with baritone sax.Do you know Lars Gullin? I started with Serge Chaloff way back when. Same here with Mulligan. I have the original 10 inch pressings.
Finally someone else who appreciated Tracy Chapman’s Crossroads! I love playing that record. Really enjoy your videos, I hope you’ll be making some more
とても有益な動画です。ありがとうございました。 サブスクで探して拝聴致しましたが、素晴らしいアルバムばかりでした。 知識の乏しいジャズファンにはありがたいです。
Great stuff. I just subscribed.
Hey OldJohn. Just stumbled across your channel. Good stuff. Any more videos coming out soon?

Are you up to date on your boosters ?
I hope you make a part 4. This was very enjoyable.
Do you insure your collection?
Yes I do!
Excellent titles!
That’s a lot of heat and money there!
SIR YOUR PROFESSIONALISM AND EXPERTISE ARE A REAL MINE OF KNOWLEDGE!. THANK YOU FOR THIS VALUABLE SHARING OF INFORMATION!.
Excellent video! Thanks to you for sharing very much for sharing your knowledge !.
For that few years when albums were release in mono and in stereo, you do collect both, don't you?
No way. I own whatever copy I can find. I don’t keep two copies of anything.
Great bn selection special label
Hi i'm french Sax player and lover of Jazz music since 40 years, i have many records , the discovery of the prestige Records IS a VERY great pleasure , thanks you very Much !i go watching others épisodes !😊
What's up? Another middle aged bloke showing off his big record collection? Really? Despite the mealy-mouthed 'regret' expressed, stuff like this merely exacerbates the ridiculous 'vinyl' revival'. Count me out. This is lazy reportage; get a decent book on jazz and ignore this.
Didn't your mother tell you that if you have nothing nice to say.................!
Hey Sean. What an awesome, eclectic haul. You’re quite the curious collector, not afraid to take a risk on a record which seriously peaks your interest. One request, could you please post a little review of that Gas Mask album after you get a chance to listen to it? Love that Zapped comp. It’s where I first discovered what a superb guitarist Frank is on Willie the Pimp. Thanks and ☮️, David Rosner
Hey David, I played it today and really enjoyed it! It’s a super solid jazz rock album that I’d liken to be a slightly peppier version of Blood, Sweat & Tears.
Great
I like the way that you handle the records. You keep your fingerprints off of the recorded surface.
We enjoy you too. The jazz Fundi
This is definitive👍🏽🤘🏾😇
Such a great collection!
Great video, can't wait for the Riverside one!
But I do miss the 12" SQUARE ART format.
Thank goodness that we have Digital Sound Reproducing Technology. Many of these Blue Note LP's are available on CD's. Over the years I have collected the Mosaic and Rudy Van Gleder remastered CD's. The issue with analog RIAA LP's is this: plastic vs diamond. The diamond will always win. Hence the Snap, Crackle and Pop surface noise. Never an issue with a beam of light.
Been into jazz for 40 years but Not an analog guy . I sure got a few great titles and artists I did not know about. Thank you very much.
Excellent video! Thanks for mentioning Ashby and Moody: two of my FAVES!
thanks for the video, thanks for the recommendations,
The 80s not really my era for music but I do remember going into HMV record store one day (in 1991) and desperately looking for their vinyl section. I asked the assistant where it was and he said 'it's gone. From now on it's just CDs.' That was a shock.
In 1989 I was seventeen and the majority of teenagers bought cassettes because we wanted to listen to our music in the car and in the house. And cassettes where the best choice as teenagers we didn't have a lot of spending money and CDs where to expensive so cassettes it was.
I stopped buying records in about 1989 not because of surface noise, perfect CD sound but because I got sick of the rubbish pressings I was returning 50+% due to warps, distortion, pressing defects. However by 1995 it was clear which way the wind was blowing, 2nd hand record shops were buying used records but not selling so I bought the stock of several stores. Laughing all the way to the bank now as paid 20 pence in the pound and rarely more than 50p per album
