With aromatic cedar you should be wearing a respirator to avoid the particles that working with cedar produces
I commend you on your closet workshop.... non heated, how did the board hold up? Looks great!
Heat went in this last winter (thank God) I was happy with the board and helped it find a new home.
@5:15 you say "remember when I told you don't use plywood" (no I don't), then you show a photo in the lower right. "This is why." Can you explain better? What am I looking at in the photo?
Your router bit should not wiggle like that lol 😂
Agreed, that's why I never use that table anymore
What did you use to coat them?
Bees wax and mineral oil
Nice!
Thanks!
You used edge grain maple for your second glue up. You have to use end grain , like the rest of the cutting board.
If I remember correctly none of the mortar is end grain it's all edge grain Also I believe because it is thin enough, grain movement should be no issue at all. I could be wrong on the movement though
The first mortar is edge grain but becomes end grain once you flip them, as does the rest of the board.
This is the first time I'm hearing it this year
Very nice
Respect
i wanna drink that
Idc if I die I’m gonna drink it
What do you paint with?
For this project it's a Spar Urethane formulated for outdoors.
@@joncarlsoncreations using brush?
Foam brush
Nice sound. The lumber is pretty cool too.
Appreciate it
Did you let the cedar planks dry out for a period of time? Thanks.
Those planks came from a tree that has been down for more than a year.
good code, no crash Washington DC
The team over there at Wisconsin Engraving was impressive
What I found on some warped and twisted oak slabs was that if I cut the project boards just a bit long and then plane them I lost less material than doing the whole slab. Great video and beautiful boards. I’m getting some incense cedar slabs soon. Hope my boards turn out with that much color
Thanks for the info!
Oh no. Shaft fail? Damn . Can you flip it still go with it?
Rotted out section of wood. Will be back filled with epoxy. But will also have majority of it covered by back splash tile
I just stained my hardwood table top that I built and ruined it. 😡 I should have just sealed it like you did. Time to grab the sander.
I bet it looks awesome! What wood did you use?
Awesome job. Where do you get your wood from?
For this particular project I got it from Horigan Urban Forest in North Chicago, IL And thanks for the love
Wow! That table is stunning! What an awesome job. Cheers to you! By the way, has anyone told you you could be Matt Damon’s cousin? You kinda favor him.. Anyway, great build and I look forward to seeing more from you.
Matt Damon, now you're just being silly. I appreciate the love though! Cheers
job very well done👍
Appreciate it, thanks for commenting
This table is unbelievable, great work.
Thank you so much. This build was so much fun And the wood does all of the heavy lifting here
congratulations on the work
Thank you so much
Can you tell me how to do a final finish on a cedar charcuterie board?
If you're looking for something simple and easy I would recommend that you look into Walrus Oil. And look for the cutting board wax
Can you tell me what the final finish is on a cedar charcuterie board?
Bees wax and mineral oil
Put a piece of scrap wood or mdf on your miter saw to act as a zero clearance to prevent blow out of the grain when you cut the blocks. This should make the fit much better.
Thank you, I'll give it a try with my next attempt at this. Cheers
Interesting
nice work, looks professional, also good work on the routered edges, Red oak can burn if you take large bites with a router.
Rob, Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and to comment. It means a lot to this beginner. Cheers JC
Nice job
Thank you so much
Do you have a helical head on the planer?
I do not at this point. I have seen rave reviews about them. But have also seen that they basically cost as much as the planer itself
@@joncarlsoncreations they are expensive, but its worth looking into if you are going to plane end grain. It isn't really safe to do it with the standard knife configuration
I fully agree and am not a fan of doing it at all. But I am stuck with my resources Honestly I think my next big acquisition will be a drum sander
@@joncarlsoncreations thats where I'm at as well. Hoping to have a laguna 18/36 this time next month. I did a craft show last weekend that got the shop budget halfway there after materials and my hourly wage. Good luck.
Can I ask how you make out at craft fairs? I'm planning on doing my first in the fall.
What sized stock are you using? Looks like 6/4 or 8/4.
Good eye, yes typically I end up using 6/4
First one I have seen like this. Nice
Thank you
bro i love that came out so beautiful
Thank you so much. The colors in there unbelievable
Mixing end grain and long grain is a no no. Board will split, each of those will move in different directions across opposing planes. Workworking basics, google the topic to learn more.
Thank you for letting me know!
It's very simple and useful. I should try making it. Thank you for the good idea.
Super simple and effective
Great video Jon, I built a dresser using pocket hole constructed drawers when my daughter was born. But instead of using the 1/8" rabbits like you used I used 1/2" ply for all sides and the bottoms, pocket hole attached, wanted the strength. But again great video.
Thanks so much for the positive note!
Dc motors torque
What kind of router bits where you using?
For flattening...I use a 2" flattening carbide bit. Found it on Amazon
Do you have the dimensions for each step? Not catching it in the video
James, Thanks for reaching out The overall board is roughly 12" x 18" Each piece was something like 3" x 1" x 36"
Nice job!
Thank you
It's nice to see original videos like this without all the fluffs and editing. But man, you want to get some safety lessons on power tools.
Thanks for the comment. I would love to know what you are referencing? I am 100% a novice when it comes to a lot of this
@@joncarlsoncreations when you were on the mitre saw, your left hand gets very close to the blade holding those little strips of wood. On your last video, you were free handing a long board on the table saw without the fence. Those are very dangerous maneuvers. I'm not here to criticize, merely making observation.
I appreciate it, again I am learning a lot of this stuff from watching other people on RUclips. I don't have any formal training on this.
@@joncarlsoncreations I'm learning too. Glad I found your channel.
Cheers
Lose the music please
Thanks for the feedback
agree. music is way too loud
Hello again, do I build your board and it was a challenge. I know you sounded upset about the problems you faced. But I started to make the same and remembered what you said and was able to correct it before it became a problem. Thank you so much for the advice.
That's awesome! Happy I could help someone
Could you tell me the length of the board you start with with the two people and the walnut down the center it may be there when you cut tell me the 3 inches or 3 1/2
Hi Nick Not 100% sure I get what you're saying but... The laminated piece is 3" x 3" x 36" long
Keep pushing Brother. Good things are to come! Positive thoughts only, and keep doing what you love.
Thanks for the positive vibes! Filming a new one today
After seeing this I built a ridiculously large one. I'm currently in the process of flattening an epoxy inlay coffee table with it. Since its big enough, my next idea is to make a door for our house in the epoxy "river table" style.
If you want to share I would love to see. I haven't gotten the fortitude to do epoxy yet.
thank you mr carlson
I hope this helps!
Gorgeous
Thank you!
That is an awesome video and an amazing table. 👍👍
Thank you, so much. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch!
