A. Bruckner, Symphony Nr. 5 Finale, Low Brass
I used to be a low brass player back in the day, and I really miss it! It's fun to get the opportunity to mess around on these instruments again. This finale to Bruckner 5 is so epic, I just had to give it a try.

    Thanks for the video! I have a single Amati (unknown age) that is in good shape overall, but is very squirrely above third space C, compared to the F side of my double horn. I am getting the mouthpiece receiver fixed since I noticed all my mouthpieces only go in very shallowly in it (like 5 mm). I'm hoping that might make it more secure, but after watching your video I also kind of want to get one of these horns! There's something about King horns that intrigues me.

    • @andrewstump6138
      @andrewstump6138 25 дней назад

      So glad you enjoyed it! That's awesome! Yeah, these King horns are kind of hidden gems I think, really great playing horns. I have seen horns that have a narrower reciever and the mouthpiece doesn't go in as far--in my experience, that does mess the intonation up a bit. I think there is a sweet spot of where the mouthpiece should go to, but always open to trial and error! I hope you keep enjoying your horn!

      @@andrewstump6138 Ahhh.... gotcha! 😂 Close enough haha. Question, do you consider the Horn a low brass instrument too?

    • @andrewstump6138
      @andrewstump6138 Месяц назад

      Close enough for sure! I personally do not consider horn a low brass, the reason being the mouthpiece size. The rim of a horn mouthpiece is a similar size to a trumpet mouthpiece and significantly smaller than even a small tenor trombone mouthpiece, making the embouchure very very different. So, despite the fact that the horn can play quite low, because of the mouthpiece and embouchure, I consider it a high brass instrument.

    • @Skyisthelimit4me
      @Skyisthelimit4me Месяц назад

      @@andrewstump6138Interesting perspective bro, understandable. Nobody really writes low stuff for the Horn anyways lol. I always wondered what different people think because if you ask ten people which is it you might get five different answers. They definitely have a low brass fundamental pitch, FF Bass & Bb Tenor, but that's just due to the length. The length is more for richer sound quality than low notes. I'm with you on high brass❤

    I've owned one of these since 1983. Mine had been a demo model with the NY Phil (at least that's what the Yamaha sales rep stated). So I bought it slightly used: the couple minor bell throat dents were repaired at no cost to me. Played it through college, and 23 years as a US Army Band Horn player. I stopped playing in 2009, when I retired. Now I've picked the Horn back up, started playing again. Needless to say, I have a very intimate relationship with this Horn after this many years (41 😉). Selling point when I originally purchased it was the incredibly easy, secure high register: to that point, it had always been a challenge. This instrument completely transformed my confidence level in all registers, and so greatly improved my Horn playing. It also has great power (volume) without great effort. As Ferris Bueller said... ruclips.net/video/0wALArd2rvo/видео.html

And everything you said lines up perfectly with my thoughts as well. The security in the high register and overall ease is unmatched on a horn of this style. There are three horn players I've known personally now who also own one and have said very glowing things about it. There have been a number of times one has popped up for sale, but I didn't have the money. Still dreaming of snagging one at some point hopefully.

    You’re right on the money about Wessex and Mack Brass coming from the same factory. The company that makes these horns is the Chinese company Jinbao. Jinbao has really upped their quality in the past few years and distributors like Mack Brass and Wessex have been able to build a successful business model from it. I’m not sure about Wessex, but the people at Mack Brass will make small tweaks to the instruments if needed. Either way, these Chinese instruments are solid products for a remarkably affordable price.

    Hello, thanks for very fine review, I was a member of a youth orchestra back in early 80' in eastern Europe and I had some, leaky Alex 103 playing Beethoven 8th and famous "trio" in the 3rd movement. We played on regional festival, and it was great! Yamaha 668 resembles what I have in my mind as a horn sound. Now looking at retirement as a scientist, I bought about 15 y old Yamaha 322 single and I am getting my embouchure back! Your thoughts about that horn?

    Lovely playing, Mr Stump, as usual. Les Preludes has always been a firm favourite with the music loving public ( and the Nazis ) with fine opportunities for the Horn players to show their stuff. Incidentally, as a retired semi-pro Horn player with more than a touch of daftness in him, the quartet tune has always reminded me of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow". Silly I know but there it is. You have to have a good sense of humour to stay with the Horn. Which reminds me of another Horn player's taste for the silly. I was engaged to play in the oratorio "Samson" by Handel. The library copy scores were meant to have all previous markings erased before being returned to the library but our copy for 1st/2nd Horns hadn't quite been cleaned up. The aria "Old Manoah's Joyful Steps" had been amended by a previous player to read "Old Manoah had a farm". We giggled our way all through it at rehearsal !

    Hmmm… if you’re a horn player (or aspire to be like I do) you will notice the high C#. It sounded so effortless that I had to search through all the Andrews to see which one was actually playing it. I think bottom left Andrew appeared a little redder in the face than the others, but who knows? 😂 This was absolutely lovely! The fact that you arranged it is impressive. You are a gifted young man. If I had an ounce of your natural ability my horn journey would be much easier. Your tone quality is something I’d like to achieve if nothing more than to relieve my teacher’s very weary ears. I’m now going to search for some Whitacre to play. Any suggestions for someone with only 2 years on horn?

It’s hard to know exactly what would be most helpful to you not having heard you play, but something that always helps me is remembering to strive for balance in my technique. Never using too much effort, but only as much as I absolutely need. Keeping the air moving, and actually in the high register, I find a need to use less quantity of air, yet a faster airspeed. Gorgeous as ever!! Which horn are you using here? Also, scordatura viola Ab at 3:13?

      Thank you so much!! Actually no, believe it or not, the 4th horn is playing that low G#, and the 2nd viola is just playing D# above. I suppose I achieved such good blend, you couldn't even tell haha!

      Yeah I agree, needs more 4th horn; I haven't listened to this in so long, it's been nearly six years since I made it, but certainly if I ever do it again, I'll keep that in mind!

    Those are so rare and weird! It's basically a smaller Eb Alto version of the Bb Tenor Baritone Horn, similar in concept to the Eb Alto version of a Bb Tenor Trombone. There is a smaller version that's even rarer. It is pitched in Bb Tenor like a Baritone Horn that's called the Bb Tenor Horn. It is the same length as a Bb Baritone Horn but it has a slightly narrower bore and slightly smaller bell. That gives it that sharp classic Tenor timbre everybody loves. None of the Saxhorns have conical tubing, unlike the Tenor Tuba/Euphonium, which gives them all a rich dark tone. In the UK they refer to the Alto Horn as a Tenor Horn & nobody knows why. My guess is probably because it has a Tenor tone in the low range. But like i mentioned, there is an actual fundamentally correct Bb Tenor Horn as well. The Alto Horns don't get used much because they don't have a very wide range, whereas the Horn in F is pitched almost an octave lower in Double F Contra-Alto which gives it that classic rich heavy otherworldly sound & a very huge range from F0 to F6 depending on the player. I'm glad you're a nerd for weird instruments too, pls keep sharing!❤

    Those are so cool! I think the crook part is supposed to be on top, like if you rotate it up 180° it's supposed to be like that I think. Nice sound too. Glad you got a hold of one lol

      Very cool indeed! Actually the crook under--the way I have it is correct; it can be confirmed looking at the Vienna Philharmonic hornists. Thanks for watching

      @@andrewstump6138 Oh ok, my apologies. I've been looking at those lately and it seems like some have an under crook and some have an over crook based on the manufacturer, apparently I found they're not all the same lol.

      Thanks! It's a riff I stole from John Scallon (brother of Rob Scallon). If you look up '30 minutes of acoustic guitar with John Scallon' you can hear him play the riff much better than I can😅
