Bear Resistant Trash Can
Successfully tested on Black Bears in my Florida community. Retrofit your Toter, HUS, Husky, and many other brands of garbage can or trash can to resist animals and wildlife. Including Bear, Raccoon, Dogs, Coyote etc. May not be Bear Proof but there will be additional options for persistent bears. Help keep wildlife wild! A fed bear is a dead bear! Thank you for caring and sharing.

Grizzly truth; we can keep people and bears safe
Big Thanks to Elmira's Wildlife Sanctuary and staff for allowing testing and documenting how to secure trash cans to keep people and bears safe. We can co-exist with a little more effort. Shout out to Stanley the grizzly bear! www.elmiraswildlife.org

how to bearproof a trash can - test description
Bought this same design on Amazon. Failed with the first bear attempt. These don’t work.
You may be an idiot. Mine are the original and hand made from the best materials available. I have not seen any for sale on amazon but if you donate $25 to a charity I designate I will send you a free set. They have been successful thousands of times.
These simply do not work.
What is your company name?
No company, just individual helping bears and people.
Just put two pins in the front of our cans. Hoping to keep the raccoons at bay. 🤞🏻
It should work for you or put a notch in the pin for the wire to sit in. Thanks, The strap method has been 100% successful with racoons. Their thumb can't open the buckles.
Thanks for the video and easy-to-follow instructions!
Your welcome, let me know if you need any ideas or instruction. Keeping bears and people safe is my goal. Just saw a grizzly near Glacier Nat Park 3 days ago on a trip out west.
Great video! Just curious -- what are the 4 black squares with what appears to be hardware through them? They are easy to see here: ruclips.net/video/P7aneHEEr6A/видео.htmlsi=H3WhPRoCs2l7czyn&t=519
Sure.
Bear will rip those little straps & clips off in a few seconds. Maybe OK for raccoons - but not bear. Have tried many, many solutions, but captive, s.s. 3/8" captive bolts is the only thing that works. Pickup guys said ours is the only version that works up in the Catskill mountains.
You are full of it. They have worked for thousands of people on bears.
Where did you get the straps???
Straps which can be 1" heavy duty polypropylene or nylon and can be purchased at any fabric store and probably Michaels or Ace Hardware. The buckles are most important.
Many years later, thank you from Gulf Breeze!
Nobody cares. If you can't figure out how to secure your trash cans without watching this elementary crap then MOVE!!
Jim, We're in Sanford with bears in and out of yard on a weekly basis. How can I buy/donate to get the four strap system?
Great! But how can I make it neighbor resistant?!
ruclips.net/video/mQgL4pN54t4/видео.html
Going to need more pins between front of can and hinge or they will just pry an opening in the lid and crawl inside... But I like the pins idea!
Hello, I'd like to purchase two of the pre-made 4 strap kits from you. How may I do so?
The real issue is how to convince ($) the 'pick-up' guys to un-do any system the morning of collection. Pain in the butt, no matter what system is used.
Agreed, in my neighborhood people store their cans outside all week and when they set them out on the morning of pick-up they unbuckle or take out the bolts. Bears only came at night so no problem and both systems worked well. In many other communities around Florida that we have retroffited the homeowners have had to pay the Trash company or the County extra for the few seconds it takes the workers to undo. One company does it for free because they like people and wildlife but this only works if the don't use the automated trucks.
I hadn't even seen your version - until AFTER I uploaded mine for the neighbors! They all work, to an extent.
It's all good, just want to protect people and bears. After witnessing the horrendous FL bear hunt fiasco in 2015 I had to try to help make a better future.
@YankeeLake Can you explain what you mean by "to an extent?" Thanks!
I’m sorry but this will not keep a bear out of your trash. They will just bend the side of the trash can and fish the bags out. They do it at my house a lot.
Why would you say this without trying it?? You have not used my method.. I have not sent you hardware. We have installed thousands across the this Country and Canada and it does work in almost every case.
I concur. I used the same buckles and straps as instructed and the bears managed to pry the side and fish the garbage out. I’m going to have to try to install buckles on the sides as well.
That's why Jim did a new video over 2 years ago showing to put two straps on the sides and two straps on the front.
The four strap system works magnificently. And Jim's invention was so great that the state wildlife agency is now launching the same exact strap program.
I know a lot of people commented that the lock pin does not work. I found that to be the case too so I came up with the idea of grinding a notch on the side of the lock pin where wire catches. It seems to work well.
That is a good idea John. As I have said lock pins are not my best choice just giving folks an easier option to using 1/4 inch bolts which is the better option.
Hi Jim, can we purchase two of your pre-made 4 strap kits? Much appreciated
Yes Peter. I think you just texted me also at 321-243-0279. Is that picture Chimney Rock, cool place.
This looks like the answer to my bear problem. Can I purchase materials from you?
Yes Susi, let me know what you need and how many. A picture of the top and front of your can will help get the right fit. Text or call 321-243-0279
What if you can't modify like make holes in your trash can bc you don't own it?
Hi Krys, We have not had a problem in FL and the city or county or waste company owns them here. I be-leave some of the other states that I mail to have similar situations. I would call first but you may need to be forceful with the employee, if they say no, ask why and how are they going to protect wildlife and customers.
What is the width of the straps? 1¼ or 1 ½??? Please help!? Thank you!
Hello Jennifer, I use 1" width heavy polypro strapping which is rated for 900 lbs because the PS22 buckles only come in 1" width. The buckles are critical. For the Brown Bear kits in Canada I use 1"nylon straps which have about 4,000 lb rating.
Jim, i sent you an email and I haven’t heard from you. Looking to buy a kit.
Johny, This just came through. Contact as needed. Jim 321-243-0279
Hey that's a good idea with the lock pins. I bought a toter can like that but have bungee cords over the top for now.
Where can I buy a kit?
Hi Jeff, I just saw your question. If you need a kit still give me a call 321-243-0279
Hi Jeff, Just checking back on your bear situation. Feel free to contact me. Jimthekayakguy
Are you near Volusia Ctny? We’d pay for you to do it
Hello Holly, yes and can install it for you or tell you how. Do you have the same type of trash can? If not send me a picture of the top and front of can. Jim
Multiple holes with coat hanger wire? I lm moving mine to my shed unfortunately for me. But... I'm tired of cleaning up trash and now he's almost ruined a $100 can.
My bear ripped the can at the hinge.
I am guessing the town does not supply trash cans. Maybe you can reinforce the hinge. Send pictures and I may have an idea. I had some failures years ago. One of the most important lessons was that bears will eventually give up when they use more calories than the food source supplies. I try to keep them wild by making if difficult to get to our food.
Western New Jersey…black bears are feasting up here. Upgraded my cans from the old round ones to 32 gallon toters (only allowed up to that size by ordinance). The tops aren’t as robust as the can you have but I installed ps22 buckles with milspec nylon. Woke up this morning to a garbage can 150ft from the house with bite marks and a slight bend on the side of the lid. I’ll call it a win for MK I. I already ordered more buckles to secure the sides for MK II. Thanks for the guide! Any thoughts on how effective the buckles/straps would be in securing the cans against a concrete wall or wooden shed?
Great job Rich. If you or neighbors need anything else get in touch. The 1 inch nylon strap is rated above 2500 lbs so if you bolt it to the wall you should be good.
Would those buckles work for keeping raccoons out of the trash, we have a terrible problem with raccoons, but they are smart little critters?
Absolutely, and if your can has the firm plastic lid like the one in the video you only need the two front straps for raccoons, dogs, etc. They have never figured out how to open the buckle yet...
I tried it and the bear destroyed it the first night!
It has worked on many thousands of cans in multiple states and Canada. Why don't you contact me direct and figure out what you may have done wrong. If you send me pictures I should be able to help you and more importantly, the bears.
Hello Jim, I hope you are doing well. I would like to buy the 4 strap kit. What is your process? Thank You in advance. Ruben
Hello Ruben. I don't check this link very often but you can always reach me by email or text. I mail kits to the US and Canada often. Jim
The Four-Strap Design invented by Jim Durocher works!!! The Roaring Fork Valley Bear Coalition loves the straps and so do our bear loving friends! Best and most inexpensive bear deterrent!
Thanks Daniela and great work in Colorado. Saving bears and keeping people safe one state at a time.
The bear just now knocked over my trash can, but the Gorilla tape held tight. It's expensive, though, and a pain to tape down every week. I'm elderly, so would I easily be able to clip and unclip these straps? My garbologists would love this rather than having to cut through tape every week. Do you make these available for sale? The tape is expensive. I'm in NY.
Yes these straps would work much better and my 80 year old neighbors have no problem. You have wonderful trashologists to cut thru the tape. I guess Gorilla is stronger than Bear but this will be a permanent fix. Send me a picture of your trash can and I can send you a kit for cost. You will need someone to install them correctly.
@@jimthekayakguy7921 How do I send you a photo, Jim? Thanks for the fast reply.
@@Parrotilla Hello, you can send it to my cell phone or call me at 321-243-0279
@@jimthekayakguy7921 Thanks, Jim. Will take the photo tomorrow. Much appreciated!
Your straps are definitely easier to use and lock than the 1s I have. Additionally I used to regularly wash my bins too. Keeping the bins clean, helps reduce smell that attracts them. I found a holder for bags on Amazon that let's me use smaller bags in my cans to hold messy waste and prevent my trash cans needing frequent cleaning. Hope it helps reduce your pest problem too. I've also found that sprinkling a little baking soda after throwing in trash reduces odors. I've added the link to it. Thanks again.
Always looking for good ideas. You know bears have the best sense of smell we know of so reducing attractants can help them and us. Thanks for your comment.
Thanks for the idea. I gave it a try and thought it was going to work. A week later, our bear was so pissed, it peeled and broke the back-side of the lid like a sardine can.
Maybe the hinge was going bad but the straps will work if done correctly. If you can fix the hinges bend a piece of aluminum around them and put a bolt through it or you could just bolt some strapping to the hinge side. Hope that helps or contact me direct.
Couldn’t find the plasticbuckles website you referenced...??
Here is the link, they are still there. or I can send kits. www.plastic-buckle.com/
I would like to purchase a set.
Suzanne you can contact me direct. Need to know type of critter(bear, raccoon etc) , how many sets, and a picture of the top front on your trash can in case I have to modify straps. Jim 321-243-0279
@@jimthekayakguy7921 Hi Jim, what is your email address, so that I can send you pics of my garbage cans?
Thank you so much for this! We are not sure yet, but believe a bear is getting into the trash at our home!
It would be good to protect the bear family and yours. If you know anyone who has a critter-cam you can set that up or look for tracks or scat. If you are near bear country and the can is knocked over it is probably a bear. This method will deter him. If you need help let me know. Jim
@@jimthekayakguy7921 It keeps getting knocked over every almost every week. Can't see any tracks because we haven't had rain in a few weeks, we haven't found any scat either. Our home is surrounded by woods & a mile or so from a wildlife preserve. Got a critter cam on the way
Great video how do I purchase 4 set?
Hello Phil, Can you send me a picture of the top front of your trash can, your address, description of the problem, and how many sets for you and anyone living near you. Jim 321-243-0279
Great idea...But I could see the trash collector unscrewing any nuts or bolts. The lid wont lift...Lets go next house!
This is to secure the trash can until pick up. In my community we are not allowed to set the cans at the curb until the morning of pick up so the homeowner takes them off then. In some areas the trash company has agreed to unhitch the buckle system that I also designed. See other video How To Make Most Trash Cans Bear Resistant.
@@jimthekayakguy7921 Another issue i have is the squirrels eat through the plastic lid. I had to put 2 layers of chicken wire over the lid..
@@tonyj8947 I had a friend that was missing 20% of his lid and used a critter-cam to see that it was a squirrel. I have not heard of any squirrels chewing on my straps or buckles but I had to relocate 2 of them after nesting season because they had damaged 2 of my kayaks. Someone told me cayenne pepper works but it would wash off where I have them on the rack.

New trash can invention ruclips.net/video/5y7G2Nd0ANg/видео.html
I like your method the best so far. We have high degree heat here in the Southern California desert and I feel it would work against the unforgiving effects of being under the sun all day. We don't have bears but we do get rodents, feral cats, stray dogs, lizards, and upon a rare occasion a coyote. I also like that it is easy to remove on trash day. Thank you for sharing!
Hello AC, Thanks for the comments and you are right the buckles and straps have been holding up to the Florida sun and it definitely will work for all the critters you mentioned. Jim
its too weak because bear is very strong to pull the lid because of spring locking pin but good for raccoon proof
I do recommend the bolt and wingnut but wanted to give choices as the other is quicker.
If you buy a washer and flat nut to go on that bolt after you run it up from the bottom & before you close thr lid, the bolt won't fall out before you put the wing nut on
If not, you can always gorilla glue it👌
That would certainly work good, but check with guys working on truck to make sure it will not poke them with the bolt. Safety first. Thanks
Beary awesome video Jim! Thank you for enabling thousands of people to peacefully co-exist with our native wildlife!!
Many thanks!
Wish I had seen this before a purchased a bear can from the county. Great idea Jim!
Thanks 👍
