Figuary Day 26! Also, Coronavirus Discussion
That was my theory too backfill things and that’s how I did it except I never learned anatomy or color theory, but I also do it with other things in life !
I think it helps to remember that in order to improve, you need a “reference” to evaluate against. This “reference” is only for didactic feedback, it feels like you are painting by numbers but it’s there so you can tell if you are going the right way. It also grounds you so you are not lost with everything that you need to learn. This is the same reason why doing studies of other artist is so useful.
Thanks for sharing ❤❤❤❤❤
Fantastic, as always.
Thanks, again. Very instructive video. This guy Kevin Murphy is a great teacher.
Absolutely fantastic! Thanks for sharing. Please put up more links to other videos like this.
What can Clove oil be used for?
if you add this to a sealled container via a cotton ball along with your pallet mixed paints, the paints will stay wet for longer
Love the 3d effect, I used to paint from imagination when I started, made some really beautiful creepy weird paintings of landscapes and characters, after a while I started realistic portraits and learned about light and dark and when I learned how to make a 3d effect it was a game changer, when I paint anything now I’m always basing how I paint with all my previously learned skills, I found conquering realism helped my more imaginative art, but I don’t paint so much 3d or realistic stuff anymore but it’s great to learn, great painting 😊
One thing that separated Kevin and other teachers, is not just his skill and command on his craft, but moreover the effort he makes to get his students over the wall. This was awesome to watch, he has not left any stone unturned in getting to the winning state. Salute!!
great lesson, thank you
Can we send in assignments with pictures off a fire tablet. I don't want to buy a computer?
If you can login to the website then you can upload pics from it.
This is the most specific yet simple explanation I’ve seen wow
I don’t remember being taught to do gradients the way she is doing them!!! That way looks so much easier 😮
I love watching you paint! I’m on the second assessment!! Not as easy as it seems! 😂
I love how Kevin really breaks things into finite steps to start with. Takes guess work out of it !
The imaginative version is more interesting, evokes movement, rather than the image of the reference.
Wow
Great demo exercises, great job,Thank you sharing it
17:10 shadow doesn't mean less color, neighter light mean more color, especially with sunlight and most of the set ups. The biggest color intensity usually rest in the "shadow terminator zone" or if it's not a pitch black shadow - the shadow usually have have greater color intensity than the light parts. It's all conected to how we "key the painting" and what is the light set up of course. And to key properly a painting we need to acknowledge the properties of the pigments. Usually if you want to inject more color intensity in a painting - you key the painting lower. Most pigments hits their peak intensity there. Keying the painting high usually means using more white - that leads naturally to less intensity (if you are not a Fauvist though).
Technically he's right. More light means that you see more of the object, and hence more of the color because more light is reflecting off of the object so you see the true color of the object (minus the color of the light), and less light means less chroma/color. The shadows are warmer because that's a classical approach to keep the shadows transparent and using a transparent color you'll find that it creates warmness. Otherwise objectively shadows don't have high chroma in real life, just in photography or old master paintings because of the technique of using transparent darks (which is mainly a rembrandt thing that the academies adapted) That's the typical academic thing we learn in all ateliers. What you're talking about is the high chroma near the terminator lines. That usually is more pronounced in photos, if you work from life, you will see more chroma but not that much. Plus, you will also see the color of the light. That's why a lot of old master paintings have that blue-purple terminator edge where the form turns towards the light from the terminator edge. The keying part is a different conversation and that is because we cannot copy colors and values - so we key them. Unless you're using a printed-out photograph or a calibrated screen - you can copy almost every color and value if you have an extended enough palette.
That helps immeasurably!
Omg the pallete knife skills!!😮
So in this scenario you have 2 shades of gray…. With 2 interim shades of blending for the edges…. Assuming this could be more depending on how smooth you want it? Is that dependent upon the shape and texture of the subject ?
This was SOOO useful. Thankyou
Is this just math? Because I can do that! Hahaha (about to start the proportional drawing on the evolve course and this is making me feel more confident)
The best video I have ever seen to explain mixing colors and so get realistics lights. Congratulations from an old professional French painter who as teached all his life exactly the same as you.
The background music is so distracting as I hang onto his every word.😉
Yeah my adhd butt is struggling hard
Congratulations to you. I wish you the very best! I love art and commission so much. I wish I could study art myself but my work schedule does not make that possible.
He referenced you in his lecture 😊
Hey! Are you still an actuary? Just curious :o
So awesome you could attend this. Blessed to be able to see this as I probably couldn’t afford to pursue my passion this way. ❤
I too am taking the evolve course, and am only on block 1, step 8, but i am struggling with the gradients. As a matter of fact I'm hoping you can add some insight
Img thanks!!! Ive been searching for how to use transfer paper
22:19 good question and answer
I definitely improved my understand of proportion and perspective.

Amazingly beautiful A2 painting

Thank you so so much for this!!! I am working on gradients and all this video has helped me so much!
Interesting lecture, is it part of an online course? He seems a good teacher, goes right to the point clearly
These grapes are so real looking!!
Ahhhh ! I am so looking forward to join you in the adventure with Evolve. Thank you really really much for sharing this and your transparency when you are sharing what you feel / think since the beginning of your channel. I just discovered it a few weeks ago and watch a lot of your videos. Hope that you will update some soon. You are a beautiful person full of authenticity. Thank you really really much for everything
There are very few people who are naturally gifted at a skill who can also teach it well. The reason is that because the skill comes to them naturally they have no idea how to explain what they're doing to someone else. The best teachers are usually people who don't have natural skill, but who persevered long enough to become experts anyway. I don't know which category Kevin falls into, but he's clearly both an expert and a good teacher.
Какая же ты прелесть❤❤❤
Thank you!!!
I just finished the first sheet of this assignment! Alittle tougher than I thought! I’m using a bigger brush next time😂 I know this video is a year later but its good to see those who went through it before us new students! Are you still in the program or did you finish?
big thanks for this and the other videos.
Cool
This so cool You are good art with Nier Rutomata
It's beautiful ♡
How come never see the the "students".? So much talking no actual painting? Painting from photographs one step up from coloring books.
it is these explanations, for one, that prepares the mind to understand how to direct the body to respond to the challenges, which are many, within the reflections on these forms in this painting. This is truly about recognizing the language, the information and then how to respond to the information. This is a very cerebral effort. This is an amazing class. He is untangling the information, breaking it down into simpler more understandable ways. I think I never before understood the thinking and focus needed to do this. He is teaching us the language here in a most incredible way i have ever seen or heard before. I get it now. Then to help this person understand he uses a graphic representation to show this in another way....the guy is a seriously excellent teacher......exactly Kevin, I do not want just to replicate something i see someone do, I want to understand why I am doing this and what is needed!!!!
