The Untamed《陈情令》and the Witch Archetype | Video Essay
In honor of Wei Wuxian's birthday, MXTXober, and Halloween, here is an interpretation and analysis of our favorite necromancer in terms of the Witch across history, belief, and pop culture.
A couple notes:
- In this video I pronounce "Taoist" with an aspirated "t" when it should be pronounced more like "Daoist." Mea culpa.
- My Chinese pronounciation is generally inconsistent in accuracy. Heritage speaker problems.

Amy’s monologue of marriage being an economic proposition for women was well acted and written, and worked as a great character moment to frame her world view but so historically inaccurate even for the 1860s. Mass. Passed a married women’s property act in 1855, allowing married women to control their own property and earnings. Shes living in a time with Brontë literature, sisters who work as governesses and earn their own money, and a sister who makes money writing! Social Acceptance as a married woman and not a spinster should have been the primary focus of her speech, not money. It came off as a modern feminists view who is historically ignorant perpetuating a myth of the time: women had no agency. Thus going so far as to paint Amy completely ignorant of her own world to anyone who has studied these aspects of historical life. I can name at least a dozen women in my own small rural town in Western North Carolina, married and unmarried, that held their own property, ran their own businesses, and controlled their own money separate from the men in their lives in the mid to late 1800s.

The worst crime of the 2019 version of "Little Women" is the complete ignorance of women's public social behaviours in the Civil-War era. The March girls fling themselves around outrageously. laugh too loud and with their heads thrown back showing the interior of their mouths, run with their skirts held high, and Jo even jumps Laurie in Paris and kisses him far too intimately. Well-bred young women simply did none of this. Gerwig never studied the manners of the era, but simply translated four young contemporary women back 160 years ago and let them embarrass themselves.

I was disappointed with Laura Dern as Marmee. She was iconic in Jurassic Park but girl she was no Susan Sarandon in this. It was giving Ballerina Farm every time she was in the scene. Also not casting Mariam Marogyles as Nana was an opportunity missed. Tbese women are way more central, grounding, and inspiring in the earlier adaptation. Poor Laura felt completely swallowed up in all the scenes between the frenetic pacing and the overacting of Saorise, Florence and Emma.

I enjoyed this adaptation attempt, but it just felt like a bunch of amateurs trying to stage the better 1994 version of Little Women. I particularly hated Florence playing 12 year old bratty Amy version and then adult Amy. Laura Dern and Emma Watson’s performances were lackluster at best. Even Timothée Chalamet’s performance was a hit or miss at times. Again, hated Florence playing a bratty 12 year old Amy. How painstakingly ridiculous to watch. I liked Saoirse Ronan’s performance as Jo, but I much preferred the tough, but soft performance of Jo done by Winona Ryder. 1994 Little Women has my heart, but I still appreciate 2019’s adaptation nonetheless.

I like all the performances because it felt like everyone for the most part gave it their all. I think Florence Puegh did a good job but there are two things I really don't like about the way she and Lourie were handled. The monologue was not realistic. Women can speck their minds the problem is both Amy and Lourie live in that culture. They both know how society works. He knows everything she's telling him already. I was going to say he may not have thought much about it but he grew up with them and they became his sisters and his mother. Of course he's thought about it before. The speech really is there for the audience but they try to make it this empowering thing for Amy. The other thing is Amy already knowing about Jo and Lourie's brack up . In the book she doesn't know so when he tells her she is very gentle and loving with him. This movie has her scold him the whole time knowing he's heartbroken. As was said it doesn't even pay that off as constructive criticism its just criticism.

I swear if they decided to cast Emma Watson as Meg, then they should´ve also casted Kiernan Shipka as older Amy and McKenna Grace as younger Amy. They still could´ve kept Florence Pugh but not for Amy but maybe for Beth. Like Emma Watson, Kiernan Shipka and McKenna Grace look like they could be related

1994 version was better. It has better music, better look, better pacing. It’s a better adaptation. I hated the time jumping in this version. It was so unnecessary and like you said, just confusing. It’s like Gerwig said “I’m going to make Little Women in the format of Pulp Fiction”.

Going to pick up the Twisted Tree. I liked the world building of the book "Practical Magic" but I didn't like the story. It started out being about Gillian and Sally, then turned into a coming of age story for Sally's children. Not interested in childish sibling rivalry and angst where coloring your hair is a big deal. Much preferred the adult issues in the movie.

I have to say I was very touched by your essay as a beginner in witchcraft and as Wei Wuxian's number 1 fan/defender. I really appreciated your train of thoughts trought the video, I also loved your analogies with events in our real world and your book references. I'm not Chinese nor american, but I grew up in a place where those who didn't follow the "orthodox" patch, which is, Christianism, like the native people and the descendants of enslaved Africans were, and still are, extremely stigmatized, blamed , excluded and isolated… this is a very similar story to Wei Wuxian's. So to me, your interpretation of the character as the witch archetype makes perfect sense. Thank you very much for this wonderful video essay, your voice is calm and lovely to hear and your articulation, organization and execution of the essay were perfect!

Excellent video! I really appreciate that you stand the ground and reject this cultish depiction of paganism in art, however, I’m not certain whether our modern western interpretation and practice of pagan religion can be enough of an argument to change the historical paganism perception. Our modern individualistic society produced modern paganism, but even to this day people in non-western countries live as close communities where everyone and their dog knows your every move, so Midsommar is not far from possibility of such society to become a cult. We cannot hide ourselves from the past, we need to accept it and move forward to be better than our ancestors.

You put exactly what I was thinking into words!: “This film doesn’t understand Jo and it doesn’t care to. It just wants to project its own modernity on her and the whole story. It’s more interested in being a feminist manifesto than telling a coherent story with consistent characters. And it had to trample on multiple characters to get there.”

Honestly, while the movie was great, from everything I read about Ian Curtis from his band members, his actual personality was not at all like in the movies. Everyone who knew him described him as a laid-back, polite, friendly dude who sometimes had bursts of anger, while this movie portrays him like that brooding dude stereotype. I guess the lead singer of a band with dark lyrics being an easy-going, friendly fellow doesnt fit the image. So while the movie looked great, it felt like trying to live up to an image rather than the actual person.

There's one ironious point you make in regards to Christendom, namely : you talk of human sacrifice like Christians do that after flashing an image of Jesus Crucified. Remember, there was no christian church at that time and the ones who crucified Christ were the Romans pressured by the Sanheadren. Christans nor Catholics requier human sacrifice and the mystical body of Christ that, we who are Catholic, receive is from transubstantiation which is a rheological belief in a change in bread and wine that is not sensible but is mystical ; that change being the beciming of bread and wine into the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ.
