I broke my Marx 666
Просмотров 972 часа назад
I bought a few Marx engines as-is. Two 666 engines were functional, but the 999 loco was non-functional. Now one of the 666 engines has died, possibly from overwork. So I try to swap parts to get the 999 working. Included is a train run.

My new Lionel Whistle Tender & Weaver boxcar

I don't have many O Gauge trains with sound, so I was happy to see on my doorstep a new-in-box Lionel Whistle Tender. It will match perfectly with my Lionel 4-4-2 Atlantic that currently has only a non-whistle tender. Also received a beautiful Weaver C&O Standard O boxcar, still shrink-wrapped. I unbox these and discover I have to do a little troubleshooting.

    Marx guy here, if the 666 is a double reduction motor and overheated, the armature may be damaged. They have plastic gearing which if all teeth don`t mesh, it will create drag or overloud on a motor. I speak from experience.

    • @Johns0gaugeAndH0trains
      @Johns0gaugeAndH0trains День назад

      Thank you for the good info. Yes, that 666 is a double-reduction motor. Judging from some old comments on the O Gauge Forum, it sounds like maybe I ran it too long. They also said pulling more than several cars and exceeding 14 volts can destroy it. And I didn't know about the plastic gears. I'm learning from experience. 🙂

  • @johnlazar7582
    @johnlazar7582 День назад

    The motor that was in your 666 does not appear to be the correct motor for that locomotive. It looks like the motor that they put in low cost Marx steamers. I have quite a few Marx steamers, most of them being the 999 model, but I also have the 333 and the 666, so I'm pretty familiar with them. The 999 is my favorite!😊

      I'm sure you're correct, John. I'm new at these so I don't really know what I'm looking at. The 999 is working good and I still have another 666 with the double-reduction gearing that works.

    When using a loco of this type and running them on a layout with hills/inclines, make sure there is no oil or grease on the traction tires. That tends to contribute to "wheel slip" issues when going uphill. If worse comes to worse and you cannot find any gears, you could potentially replace the motorized truck with one from a company called Northwest Shortline. They make a motorized drive called a "Stanton Drive Truck". The motor is inside the truck itself and does not take up space in the locomotives body. However, you'd have to make a section of flooring to mount it in place and that's not hard to do. To add more weight, you can use those small, 1/4", flat wheel weights that have an adhesive backing on them. Just stick those inside the loco shells walls and or on the lower frame close to where the wheels are.

    • @Johns0gaugeAndH0trains
      @Johns0gaugeAndH0trains 21 день назад

      @WWIIREBEL Yes, I've read about those NWSL drives. I bought these so long ago that they're nostalgic for me. And I dont really want to put much money into them. Thanks for watching.

      That Athearn blue box model doesn't have traction tires. But, yes, the grade is too steep, and on top of that the curves are less than 18" radius, which also robs power. The track plan is from Lin Wescott's old book "101 Track Plans."

      @Johns0gaugeAndH0trains That would be cool! I believe we build our layouts to represent a place where we would like to live.

      I take that as a great compliment. Thank you, John! I'm getting to like editing video, getting 10 minutes down to 1 minute.

    Are the sinclair tanks from Menards. Cool commercial!

      The Sinclair Fuel tanks are just cardboard tubes wrapped with strips of paper. In back are an MTH and Lionel tank car. I'm glad you enjoyed the commercial! I didn't know if anyone would like it. Thanks for watching.

    Loved your ad for Dobie Spangler, as well as the detailed reviews!

      I'm glad you liked it. The channel was really hungry for some revenue, so the ad dollars from Dobie Spangler couldn't have come at a better time. One of these days I've got to get down there and check out the new lineup of Chrysler products for '58. Their dealership is just east of the layout, between the plywood and the wall.

      Thank you, Donald! I still haven't gotten to the bare plywood around that little valley.

    Very realistic, that cliff is amazing.
