Bang & Olufsen MX7000 CRT - Retro Gaming TV
Просмотров 5 тыс.5 лет назад
Little demo of what this set looks & sounds like for Retro Gaming. Playing games from a modified PAL SNES in NTSC format using MSU1 Enhanced Audio. This model is fitted with an active speaker system which sounds great and the screen generates some really nice scan lines.
Great video this! I have just bought a scart switch and found that it cuts automatically to half a screen. Does anyone know if you can lock the tv somehow to format 2? I’m having to change it every time I switch consoles. Also regarding the geometry is there settings which centre the screen across all consoles n64, ps2, mega drive etc
If you want to see the left border, simply adjust the H Blanking until it appears. ;-)
The MX8000 has a LOT better picture than the MX7000 and now you want to bring it back to 7000 level…. Wel just buy a 7000 then! Totally love my MX8000 as is. You guys are crazy….
@@atariandre5014 lol just the softness of the picture…. Everything else is soo much better like the brightness of the picture, the user interface, being able to adjust the picture in rgb mode etc etc. This doesn’t change any of that just removes the artificial over sharpening of the image.
I have 2 mx7000 and just bought a mx8000. Which one is better?
Какой из них лучше?
The one displaying a PC Engine game...
SVM is actually an analogue processing and not digital.
i have this problem were i turn on the tv it goes on for a little while and then it just turns of by itsellf. Do you know any way to fix this?
Hi this is a common problem I see. The advice I got was to sell it so I did. Bought a different brand CRT for a cheaper price and I am just as pleased 🤘🏻
@RetroFlex1981 Which SW version is it on this one in the video?
Is this VisionClear on all of the MX8000's? I only ask as mine doesn't give anywhere near as sharp of an image as your comparison shots show (when still connected). I doubt the previous owner disconnected it as he was an old chap (not used it for retro gaming 🤣) and he'd owned the set from new (2003).
I know this is a late reply but I've just won one of these off eBay. I pick it up this Saturday. I hope you're still enjoying yours!
How’s the geometry?
@@abdelll9737 Very good, I had to tweak it slightly as the image was shifted to the left too much. The TV gives such a nice bright and colourful image. Very happy with it.
@@daveishereuk Mine is pissing me off. No matter what I do I can’t get the whole image on it when I plug a console to it. And the image is all crooked. Oh well…
@@abdelll9737 I take it you've been into the service menu and made some alterations to the geometry?
I think the 7000/8000 are too big. For me the 4000/4200 is the best.
Constantly on the hunt for a great CRT going to keep this one in mind thank you for the content
Thank you soo much,i disconnected this cable on my Beovision Avant 28 type 8166
cool video I was thing of getting a Bang & Olufsen if I can finde one I live in uk I nits you had a number of scary cables and boxes for them have you got a video demonstrating how and what you used id be intrested also this TV set how well does it handle newer console like xbox 360 ps3 ps2 thanks again for making this video
The mx8000 has a better picture, sharper image and better colors than my Sony L420 pvm. It is amazing.
I'm going to get my MX7000 this weekend, and i can't wait !! The seller told me that the CRT works perfectly... and that it's hard for him to sold it.
Does anyone know where to find the G2 calibration.?
What is that?
I finally got one yesterday and yes, it is better than my 2 MX7000. For AV i use Decoder 2 set on the channel 1 so i can use the peritel input on the channel 1 (not Vtape or DVD)
That added SVM sharpness doesn't really bother me that much and it doesn't create "ringing" artifacts etc what I can see, so it's ok from the distance I'm sitting. What I would like to do though is turn off the sensor that makes the tv set adjust brightness and contrast according to available light source. I wanna be able to turn it off and adjust it to my own liking but doesn't seem to work to disable that sensor without loosing remote control function?
Does this work on a MX4000 too?
No the mx4000 doesn’t have this circuit and already has the softer image. This only applies to the later models mx8000 and possibly the mx4200.
I checked on my MX4200 (manufactured circa 2004) and there's indeed the same connector on the neckboard that goes to a coil right behind the convergence rings.
Shout out to crt collective!
Did it make the screen brighter? On my mx7000 the visionclear sensor dims the screen and brightens it when it recieves more light
No. That’s not the same thing you are referring to there that’s something entirely different to SVM which the MX7000 doesn’t have.
Ah ok. Do to know how to disable that feature on the mx7000 to get a brighter image?
Unfortunatley not no. I dont recall the MX7000 having an ambient light sensor though but I could be wrong. I know some people remove the contrast screen to increase the brigtness but I think this somewhat detracts from the look of the set. This was another one of the reasons I upgraded to the 8000.
I have got myself a MX4000. The picture is very dim though and I am not sure why.
yeah the MX4000 and MX7000 are known for being a bit dim due to the contrast screen in front of them (which can be removed btw), plus they are old sets now its likely that some of the components might be wearing e.g. capacitor. They should still have a nice picture if its working correctly!
Make sure contrast is at 62, saturation at 62 and brightness around 20-30. By default, contrast is too low. These models do wear out phosphors faster than TV's without contrast screen, so they might have some wear and burn-in.
@@lovemadeinjapan Thank you for coming back to my question. Sadly, shortly after asking this question, the TV died. I am not sure if it was from old age, or because I accidently fed my PAL TV a NTSC input for some time. It sounded like it was the high voltage transformer that shorted. So it's sadly dead. But hey, I found a MX4200 for cheap.
@@Mr_Wh1 All MX models 3500-8000 and 1500 accept both NTSC and PAL.
does it add lag if its not removed?
I dont think it makes any difference lag wise, its still a CRT so it would have to keep up with the image being projected from the electron guns being fired. I certainly didnt notice any either way.
@@RetroFlex1981 i don't feel any input lag as well but since it's called " digital processing
@@user-le3eb9jj6s yeah i wouldnt get too hung up on me calling it "digital" its all getting far too technical, however I am sure there is a digital circuit somewhere that sharpens the image on the fly but it still has to keep up with the image that is being refreshed and drawn on screen so like i say there shouldnt be any lag. Obviously I am just making some educated guesses / assumptions here so I wouldnt put too much trust in what I am saying you would have to test it yourself to be sure :D
@@RetroFlex1981I think you are right . I just wondered and hoped U maybe knew for certain if it does . Great CRT regardless tho very happy with mine
If you open up your SCART cable and disconnect pin 8, the widescreen problem goes away. I have an MX4200 that has the same behaviour. For some reason, every SCART cable seems to wire up pin 8 with the voltage that sets 16:9.
yeah I was aware of the pin 8 voltage thing, some consoles like the SNES always provide it not sure why they did this!
Does this apply to the Beovision 1 as well?
I have heard that it does indeed, apparantly they share very similar internals.
My bang & olufsen tv keeps turning off. I just found my old bang and olufson beovision mx8000 tv again but when i turn it on the screen starts flickering for a couple op seconds and then just turns itself off. I tried plugging it in and out again but u keep having the same isue. Does somebody now a solution to this problem?
Hi! As always you will need someone who knows a bit about troubleshooting electronics etc, and I know that is increasingly hard to find these days but I suspect from what you describe it would be capacitor related as is quite commonly the case with aging electronics.
The Beovision 1 is pretty much the same model, so the remote inputs and service menu is identical
Thats good to know. I heard John Linneman @dark1x on the Digital Foundary podcast talking about this set recently and he mentioned the same hack works with regarding to disabling SVM (see my other video). Are there any other major differences with the set vs the MX8000?
@RetroFlex1981 The Beovision 1 doesn't have any major differences, it's essentially the same unit in a different housing and no contrast screen, I have a Beovisons 1, an MX7000 and an MX8000 The 8000 is my personal favourite, mines either a 28" or 32" model, play pretty much all of my SD/4:3 content through it
How does the mx7000 compare to this model ?
Better RGB mode colours as they were a bit washed out and couldn’t be adjusted on the 7000 and the 8000 also has a much better menu system and a few others things I’ve already mentioned in this video and the pinned comment. However the 7000 is still a great tv it looks identical to this one and has the same amazing active sound system, they are a lot more common (in the UK anyway) as took me a long time to hunt down an 8000.
Works for light guns games like Time Crisis II?
Yep I can confirm it works with NES and PS1 light gun games! So assume it will work for that.
Hi what are your settings for playing snes and sega megadrive thank you
Mx8000 here sw 2.5 and youre sw you can see back of tv sticker
Fantastic set if it's working well when you get it. Crap if you have to open it up and work inside. It's horrible in there. Whereas a 25-27" Panasonic/Sony has one board and a neck board this thing has like I dunno 7 boards all packed in there tightly interconnected by cables. I wouldn't repair one if my best friend asked me to.
I got the mx 4000
Hey man, i just bought a mx7000 and i am wondering what settings i need to do for to show my games in a good way. (Nes,Snes,N64 etc) do you have maybe some basic settings for me. Thankyou in advance
Are you there ? I fixed the brightness issue. I can't find anyone to help me with the SOUND issue though. Forums aren't replying to me, for whatever reason (my registered accounts aren't being activated, and team members aren't replying to my emails.).
How did you fix the brightness issue?
Hi . I got an MX7000 as a birthday present , and I love it . I just have a few difficulties with it . I can't find the " SOUND " cue to add to the list when accessing " ADD ? " , and , because of that , I can only play in Mono . I also read from someone that they can access " SOUND " , but mono remains mono ( I also tried tuning it , but , it doesn't change it ) . My other issue is that when I plug in my ps2 through scart , the image is less bright than my android tv box for example , which I have hooked up through a converter to SCART .
Why does the music in super mario world sound do different? Is this the pal version differnt.?
He plays SMW rom with some audio enhancements (in video 9:00).
yeah was an MSU1 rom hack. They are available here www.zeldix.net/t1437-super-mario-world-msu . PAL version is exactly the same but runs at 50hz instead.
Real nice video! Thanks allot for this information. I wonder tho🤔 it might make the picture to soft? I much prefer the sharpness of the Trinitron. Maybe if i disconnect the cable and then just adjust the sharpness manually on the back?
Great video mate! I got a mx8000 myself a few years back. I had to travel like 3hours by train to get it haha. But it's an awesome set for sure. Thanks for making this video! Always fun to watch. Btw is there any chance you could make a monitor guide about MX 8000 calibration? I know each set is unique but still an overview on this topic should be very useful. I'm sure it would help me and others.
You carried a Mx8000 on the train? Mad man. Have you figured anything out about calibrating it?
Why is s mario world music not like the original?
:D Its a rom hack that replaces the audio with cd quality audio tracks known as MSU1 and can be applied to many games, although you need something like an SD2SNES rom cart to take advantage of it. www.zeldix.net/t1437-super-mario-world-msu
@@RetroFlex1981 i have a 800 in 1 snes cart. Is there a guide on how i setup the files?
@@swardmusic I don’t think an 800 in 1 rom cart will have the necessary hardware to emulate msu1 unfortunately
My MX7000 looks shit with rgb cable, blue looks Grey most colors turns a Little bit of Grey and green, but with composit it looks like it should. But a Little more blue
Wish I could get one of these in the states.
Do you need to do this on the Beocenter 1 TV ?
Good afternoon, asks for the PIN code of the TV, how to find it?MX 8000
Visit a dealer. They gave me the master PIN.
I bought the Tv today the only problem are 3 corners are blury and one is shaky in the middle is just perfect i wish i could fix it. Does anyone know how to fix it?
I have an MX7000 today, how much would you pay to get an upgrade to the MX8000? The bleak RGB-colors are bothering me a little bit on the MX7000 to be honest, but other than that (and some geometry issues even after calibration) it is quite amazing :)
Is this "trick" also applicable to the MX7000 ?
The point of the video is to bring the sharpness down toward the MX7000 level. No such cable on the MX7000 sets :)
@@limited.timestruggle Thanks for the clarification !
@@limited.timestruggle the mx7000 has a light sensor. If you shoot it with a flashlight it will give more contrast than what is possible in the menu. Do you know if it is possible to make it always use that high contrast?

Have you tried playing ps2 on this tv if so how does it look
yeah looks decent.. most ps2 games are 480i though so can look a bit flickery especially at PAL 50HZ looks pretty good running at NTSC 60hz though!
I used to own one of these about a year ago I sold it. I couldn’t handle the flickering. It was giving me a headache. My question is, is there a way to reduce the flickering of crt tvs? Because I just found a smaller version and I really want it. But I need to reduce the refresh flickering.
yeah I agree it sounds like you might have been watching an interlaced source like a ps2, one thing I find that does help with this is running games at the american NTSC 60hz (480i) output rather than the slower PAL 50hz output (576i) as I personally find the interlacted flickering much more noticable when its a PAL game.
@@RetroFlex1981 it was broadcast tv but still you’re right. It was 50hz because i live in Europe. All the crt’s here are 50hz.
@@RetroFlex1981I just got a MX4002 that’s 50hz - 60hz. I’m so happy but I need help calibrating the image. The color looks somewhat washed out and the sharpness is not like yours.
@@abdelll9737 an MX4002 is basically the same as the MX7000, the equivelent set to the MX8000 is actually the MX4200 so the colours are known to be a bit "washed out" in RGB mode on the older models as it doesnt allow you to adjust the colour setting, only when using composite input and not RGB. Something the later MX4200/8000 set allows you to do.
Is it a 50 hertz or 60 hertz I want to use it for retrogaming ?
