The primary focus of this channel is audio recording techniques and tips using DAW, DAW-less and hybrid setups. I’ve been recording original music as a hobby for over 30 years, starting with cassette tape based multitrack machines. Synthesizers are my first love when it comes to instruments. Electric guitar is the only instrument I've learned to an intermediate-high skill level. Here I share things I’ve learned over the years in hopes of providing some viewers new ideas for their own creative endeavors.
Tascam Model 12 No DAW Mastering Options and Considerations
This is geared toward the DAW-less recording world. It provides information specific to mastering using a Tascam Model 12, Model 16 or Model 24 and provides basic general mastering tips as well. This is primarily for individuals who don't wish to use a PC, Mac or Linux software DAW in their recording workflow.

Tascam Model 12 MIDI Sync To Roland Verselab MV1
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
Here is a brief discussion and a short demonstration of using MIDI to synchronize the Tascam Model 12 with external gear. This time it's the Roland Verselab MV1 that we're using as the MIDI slave. Using a setup like this adds up to 10 audio tracks the the Roland Verselab. This setup can also massively expand the recording-project capabilities and options of the Tascam Model 12. This video is ge...
Tascam Model 12 Basic Midi Sync
Просмотров 15 тыс.3 года назад
It's easy to sync the Tascam Model 12 via the MIDI out to other devices. In this example I recorded the synchronized drum track as a guide track. You don't have to record the tracks, you can instead merge the MIDI device track, which may be originating from several synchronized devices at the same time, during the final mixdown. This would leave all of the audio tracks free to record other thin...
Install SSD Solid State Drive In Roland VS1680, VS1880, VS1824, Boss BR1600
Просмотров 16 тыс.3 года назад
How to install a new solid state drive in your Boss BR1600, BR 1600CD and Roland VS1680, VS1880 or VS1824CD. This may work in other Boss and Roland devices but I have not tested it in those. A device I could not get it to work in is my Korg D1200 :( . The solid state drive I successfully tested and have been using for several months is the KingSpec PATA SSD purchased from Amazon but available o...
Korg D1200 and Tascam Model 12 plus Tempo Maps
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.3 года назад
Intended to make this about tempo maps but due to equipment malfunctions it morphed into a discussion of tempo maps, old vs new multi-track digital recorders and a couple other topics. I'm going to see about repairing the D1200 because the feature set and ease of use is something I would miss having in my home studio.
The Ultimate 3 Minute Guitar Workout!
Просмотров 2616 лет назад
This is not a serious guitar tutorial. Here I use the Ibanez S320 guitar for the "exercises".This is somewhat of a parody of the guitar videos I used to watch on DVD and even VHS. They often used to play the guitar too fast for me to ever learn their advanced licks. The tablature they provided with their guitar lessons helped a little but not much, and sometimes the tablature was actually wrong!
Creepy and Haunting Fender Jaguar HH Guitar

This is an example of reversing the audio after recording guitar. The VG-99 and Fender Jaguar are used together once again for the two lead tracks and the bass track. The rhythm track is a simple beat made in Redrum.

The Sony MDR 7506 headphones have been around for decades. These excellent headphones are still used by professional recording artists and recording engineers around the world. This is my personal take on why these have been my favorite headphones for over 20 years.
Korg Electribe EMX 2 Filter Sweeps

The Korg Electribe EMX 2 is shown here with a demonstration of various filters and dirty sounds. There are very few effects added and simple waves are used so you can hear the filters better. The Korg Music Production Station had a variety of different low pass, high pass and band pass filters. I switch between them at random here.

Bass Station II Analog Filter Sweeps

Here we demonstrate the Novation Bass Station 2 filter sweeps and a few other sound examples. The Bass Station analog synthesizer can get dirty! I accidentally left out examples of self-oscillation. This synth can sweep up into the very high frequencies that only dogs can hear...LOL.
Blackstar Stereo 10 Recorded Direct To DAW
Просмотров 16 тыс.7 лет назад
This is a sound test and demonstration of how to record directly to your DAW without microphones, using the USB out on the Blackstar ID:CORE Stereo 10. The sound quality is good with low noise. The clean sounds may have been better using a guitar with single-coil pickups. At the end of the video all effects are removed, except for distortion/ overdrive. ASIO4ALL, a free download, was installed ...
New Patterns for Korg Electribe 2 / EMX 2 ( Original Patterns )

My pattern creation skills as shown here are average. This video is designed to demonstrate some of the different sounds you can extract from the Korg Electribe 2 / EMX 2. There are about 20 original patterns. I am also putting together a video with nothing but heavy and nasty sounding original patterns that will be published very soon.
Drum Solo on Arturia Drumbrute, Electribe EMX 2, EMU Command Station

I am not a drummer and only practiced for about 30 minutes prior to shooting this video. This is a fairly basic drum solo that demonstrates what you can do using drum machines in a live setting. The analog Drumbrute by Arturia, the Korg Electribe EMX2 and the EMU Command Station are showcased here.
DRUM SOLOS ON GUITAR: ROLAND GR-55!

Here is a brief demonstration of using the Roland GR55 built-in drum sounds as more than just a backing track during looping. This is not a substitute for a real drummer but it can be fun. It shows another reason why the GR55 is such an amazing and incredible machine!

"It's Not JUST a Guitar" by Guitar Instructor Noel Sharp
The way you approach this issue is simply awesome. Thank you very much for this excellent and genuine video. Many thanks and regards from Chris Bunch of flowers music ( That's the name of my channel as well)
I just acquired this combo today, in fact! Super helpful vid. Thank you!!
Where is the image for the jumper br1600?
you ignored the elephant in the room, after this SSD install can you save files to a computer or anything like that, SSD makes no sense just because is SSD, VS is already fast enough, and since you can still only use a small ammount of Gigabyte its meaning less, not like you install SSD to have 1TB. like I dont get the logic here, SSD, anyways
It's not just about whether it is "already fast enough". An SSD loads faster (about 18%) and has quicker seek and access times. It has no moving parts so is completely silent - a pretty compelling reason to upgrade just for this. Generate less heat than a traditional HDD. It's also lighter and more reliable than an IDE Drive. SSDs use less power and are more readily available than the old drives these days too. Some pretty good reasons to upgrade I think...
Great video!
Kinda like your vocals
This was super helpful! You presented so much ancillary information that is highly relevant and easily overlooked. That said, i think the model 12 might just work for me as my plan is to make pre-production recordings that I present to a pro and then re-record.
Thanks Noel..So many great points especially about the trends and reasons to go Dawless! One thing I do like about the old Tascam DP-24/32 portastudios is that they actually have that mastering phase that even gives some nice Multi-brand compression pre-sets. I do usually run that final mastered mix into Audacity just to use that good Noise reduction effect that program has (then do final trim there as well) That old Korg was cool too! It would be nice if in the future the Model12 added that capability! Good work arounds you provided as an alternative. Thanks again.
that same drive wasn't recognized in my 1680. Any ideas why
The problem with older digital recorders is that 16bit isn't really great with more complex projects (8+ tracks)
Trying to use Superior Drummer 3 with my Model 24, would midi sync allow me to record multiple channels through the usb port?
Hello Mate, thanks for that video! For the BR-1600 or the BR-1200 - i got a BR-1200!, Is it possible to install a IDE to SSD Adapter? Have you test that? Or have you only test it on the BR-1600 with the IDE to PATA Adapter? I don't understand the different between, when it is a Adapter, why the BR resolve the other side of the Adapter...i don't understand that? The BR transmit the Data to the Converter the Adapter, not directly to the Drive, right!? So why don't work a SSD Adapter? When a 40GB SSD is Installed...size fits...what is here the problem? I don't understand that? Have you a answer or idea for that, i'm very interested in a answer. please !
I love buying new gear because I come across cozy yt vids like while searching about. great video!
I use my PC for research, entertainment and numbingg brain cells. Nothing blunts my creativity faster than opening a DAW and browsing plugins. My tascam eight track has the opposite effect. I'm looking at the model 12 because at 24bit and 48hz it gives me the headroom for bouncing and effects that I don't have with the DP-008EX. 16/44
I JUST got a Tascam Model 24 as a dedicated Drum mixer. In the older days I only used the Mackie 1604 . The Tascam SUMPLY adds the ability to record multitrack onboard easily. So equipment is for each individual taste. I USE TO LOVE Studio one because it was uncluttered , easy. But like all others it’s now far overloaded , not simple and over the top. The Tascam 24 straightforward fast, easy AND for those who must have DAW can as well. So consider the Tascam model line BEST of BOTH worlds for YOU
Totally agree on everything you have said ! Right down to choice of headphones.
You could install it that way or take the adapter out of the housing like a normal person so you don’t bend the pins 😂
Im hear because i have just recently bought a tascam model 24....for some years ive been using a tascam dp24..i still have it..... and im thinking the same thing ..so i found your video..i miss the mastering section on the dp24..and many things.....as i dont want to use a daw for the same reasons as you......tho i bought the model 24 on the idea that it has options... it seems that in fact it kinda got less on it than the dp 24....it seems that it is geared up for live band work more than studio work in a way ..any good ideas u can think of or options i can use....with both boards...would be appreciated...thank u
I have a DP32sd and am pondering getting the Model 24 or the new 2400. DId you figure out your best use scenario or back to the DP?
@@marksvideochannel3592 hi ya ..if I be honest... there is stuff I like about both ...the tacam model 24....and the dp 24... in some ways I prefer the dp24 ...it has some really easy features...... but i didn't realise they was gonna bring out the 2400.... I'd get that new one mate... save that tad more money and get that.... it has some stuff on it that I feel I need on the model 24... I've also had a sd card fail on Me and wont work...after I recorded 5 songs as well....was well gutted..never had that issue with the dp 24..... still tho ..it depends on what ya want to use it for.. I do like the model 24.. but I'd personally get the 2400..take care
@@Stechamppn Appreciate your insight, thank you from New Zealand :)
Should have had you play during an Annual.
Great vid noel. I had lots of the older units, even the Tc finalizer back in 2002. The vs1680 recordings still sound great today up àgainst everything else. In fact it has it's own 'sound'. ❤😊
A well needed video.
Awesome video!
I don't run my studio with DAW. My Roland FA06 work station has a 16 channel squencer. You don't need to go DAW. Viruses get on the computer, so now you need a VPN. Between my Tascam Model 24 mixer and my FA06, (both utilizing an SD card) and I'm 64 years old and don't want to spend my life savings on my studio, and a computer is not necessary !
"The model 12 has to be the master"; thank you so much. you're the first one to give me a definitive answer about this. I have an Arturia KSP, several synths, and a drum machine that I've been racking my brain trying to figure out how to connect. I'm still not perfectly clear, but I'll start with the Model 12 as the master for starting/stopping drums and sequencers and see if I can't make it all work somehow. THanks!
I’ve just ordered the model 12 and it arrives tomorrow! Can’t wait! If I have the kick of my tr8s going to a channel, how do I side chain an additional channel to the kick channel?
Please Let me Know if You can figure out How to Load the AN1X Sound set onto AN200.
I was going to buy the Korg until you showed the display malfunction.
Ha! We used to put 1-2Gb laptop hard drives in our VS-840's 15 years ago - then figured out that SD or CF card readers were even better - but the VS-840 partitioned whatever you installed into as many 1Gb partitions as needed - but only the 1st partition was accessible since the VS-840 didn't have the ability to format/switch to the 2nd or higher partition. Still have my VS-840 flashed to EX with CF reader.
I have a VSR-880 and I would love it if someone would tell me just how to start recording? Any help is appreciated because I have downloaded the users guide and can't understand it.
I have the VSR-880 which dismounts through the front.
I don't use a computer anymore because I want it to sound natural and no fakers! And I likw a more simplistic sound without the frills!
I am running into the issue with MPC ONE as a secondary device. MTC works fine, but MIDI clock makes my MPC run wild. Almost as if the BPM is sped up like 5 times. Still trying to figure out what can be the cause.
I have a MPC Live 2. I’ll try syncing with the Model 12 and see if I run into the same problems.
@@noelsharp that would be appreciated. The only thing I can think of is the USB hub. That is now powered by the MPC. I am thinking the hub should be powered by a power supply. Anyway feedback appreciated!
Yeah, you can’t slave the model 12, via midi, this is a no for me, I’m taking mines back. Thank you.
Devices containing recorded audio don’t normally have the capability of acting as slave, unfortunately. This is because tempo changes made in the master device would try to force the audio in the slave to slow down or speed up in real time (time stretch or warp). Some DAWS can possibly do this.
will this work on my 1180 CD? loved my machine now she's down
It should work if the device powers on but you are getting an error that the existing internal drive can’t be read.
Thanks Noel.......I've had it a long time. I'll try it and if shes gone I'll get something else.,@@noelsharp
Maybe he’s putting it in a different Roland.
I’m going to try a cf card reader
This only works with 16gb
This doesn’t work for the vs1680.the. Best thing is 1 gb
I don't trust computers. I have an old dp24 that's on the fritz, and I'm on the verge of getting a new one or the Model 12.
Tengo este model 12...una vez me grabo el master en la sd..pero no e podido no se como .
Your audio for your drum machine is going to speakers, or is your audio going into the model 12
Its using mtc. Only mtc compatible devices can be synced
Hello does the model 24 have midi sync?
HI I NEED TO TALK TO U .PLEASE HOW CAN I PLAY THE CD ON THE KORG D 1200. THANK YOU
I was able to get a HDD from Roland that matched perfectly. But sadly no noise from the drive, no lights. Seems another pronblem needs fixing. Ive noticed a yellow goo has i think seeped out from two similar parts that have openings at the bottoms. Anyone know if this is a proublem ?
For anyone thinking about strictly using or not using a computer please remember only siths deal in absolutes
Hi,, I am probably way too young to even be on this channel as I am only 15.... I want to start recording but I'm confused by the channel part. I write all of my songs in my one keyboard & my MPC Live 2 that I just got. I typically write & use all 16 tracks on my keyboard, plus planning to do lead vocals plus some background vocals as well. So, do I need at least a Tascam Model 24 or is there a way for me to use a Model 12 some kind of way? All without using a daw..... Thanks for your help....
Since making the video I now use a Live 2 with the MPC 2 DAW software that comes free with it. That’s my first recommendation for you, using the MPC plus the computer will give you a great hybrid setup. If you don’t want to use a DAW at all then you probably should consider a different stand alone recorder that at least offers basic editing capabilities like a Tascam DP24 or DP32. I think you’ll find that a DAW will allow you to work much faster though.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have a Bri-1600 do the ssd reds any formatting or it will start working as soon as installed?
Sorry about misspelled words. Bro 1600 and if it needs any formatting
It’s been a while since I installed a drive. I believe you have to use the BR1600 to format it the first time you start it up after the install.
@@noelsharp hi noel. Will the screens appear with a replacement hard drive ? Do they not need to be down loaded ? Formatting might be the same thing ? If so how ?
I have the VS1680, would it work at all with a higher GB drive? Or is it true that it won’t work with anything over 8GB?
On the VS1680 I believe 8GB is the most that can be used.
@@noelsharp I threw in a 32GB drive and it works great. 👍
@@jtmotenz where did you get your 32gb drive that works?
Bump for the Vs1680 for my dad. I wanna throw a 40gb pata drive in there for him, $15 on eBay, will it work?? (20x2gb partitions?)🤔
How do we change the tempo on the Tascam 12 when it's set as the master?
I don’t believe the Model 12 allows tempo changes after audio has been recorded. It doesn’t have any type of time stretch so if audio is recorded it will not change with the new tempo. The newest MPCs and the Akai Force do allow this. With those devices 10-20 BPM tempo changes can even be done during live playback with minor glitching of the dedicated audio tracks. Changing the entire song tempo prior to playback can be done on those devices as well. That’s why I mostly stopped using the Model 12 for song creation and now use the Akai Force and MPC Live 2. With the Akai’s you get 8 stereo audio tracks, 8 synth tracks, plus over a hundred midi, keygroup or clip tracks. A single sequence can be 999 bars long with like 1000 events per bar. And sequences can be chained in a single song! If anything more than that is needed I’d personally go ahead and use a PC or Mac based DAW.
