What about insurance? Like if your stop block fails and someone gets hurt, then what?
In the quick pan you did of the print farm, I thought I saw several UPS's (okay, technically, not a UPS, a battery backup). So 2 comments: they also have a lifespan that needs to be accounted for, as well as power consumption; and I hadn't thought of doing that for my printers, so now I will, which is is funny, 'cuz I have them on everything else!
Don't factor in innovation costs? Cant afford innovation. Competitors come on strong later through theft of innovation concepts and maturity of markets. Savvy companies during innovation define minimum market entry and maximum customer benefit releasing two products in the market, by market maturity the competition sees to much competition and reconsiders entry.
I never buy any 3d printed parts because they just don’t up no matter what it is made of. Plus they look cheap with all the layering.
Don't forget to include things like the licensing costs to use a trademarked logo on your commercial products ;)
I wish I could get label + ship for the prices you get. I'm shipping a small thing and it is still costing 11 bucks ONLY for shipping...
Hi Travis! I tried your free Pricing tool and it saved me a lot of time since I was in the process of starting to develop one, and yours was even better with things I didn't even think about. I Just wanted to point out that your tool has a minor detail that should be fixed. Currently it calculates the added machine cost (which is great) but it doesn't multiply that value when changing the quantity of printed parts. Its easily fixed with adding a _ *E17 _ at the end of the formula on the field G43, it should read something like this _ =(D12*'Adv. Inputs'!C5)*E17 _ at least this worked for me. I even added the parts on my slicer and reentered each value for different scenarios and it was closer to the en results with this change. Hope this helps you or anyone else that tries it out.
Thats my dream….
Lol for someone who knows what they're talking about, you sure sound like you dont know what you're talking about, especially with Etsy.
great info thanks--how is the design cost figured? thanks
Who financed this video?
Wow $33 for a kg of filament is ridiculous
Time cost of money. the $1000 dollar machine money could be use dto buy a CD so yo uneed to add the interest to the money. Put another way, if you borrowed to buy the machines then the total payment is more than the cost divided by hours.
Def an underrated channel with real knowledge about a 3D Printing business! not just getting on youtube to do printer reviews and get sponsors for money
Thank you for sharing!!!!
Not trying to be an ass, but can't you get in trouble for putting the DeWalt brand name on your product without permission? It's probably trademarked.
Course launch will now be sometime in early 2025! Sorry for the delays here folks, lots going on and I want to make this the best it can possibly be. Thanks for watching!
There has to be a point where it no longer makes sense to 3d print and just have the product produced for you if you are selling that much of it.
Something that someone in retail told me is if you are not pissing off about 10% of your potential customers with the price you are under priced.
dont forget to charge for the air too
This is something I have struggled with for quite some time. How to figure out what people want without them actually telling you. I have been making custom, one-off lamps for decades and 3D printing opened up a whole new direction for me and I have sold a lot of what I have made but the stuff that sells well is the stuff that was custom ordered. I can make stuff that I like but my personal tastes are a VERY limited market. So unless someone tells me what they want how in the H*** am I supposed to know? lol
what about the cost of storage - you are selling pre-made parts. I suppose you are not keeping a big stock since the whole point is POD.... good video!
Any updates on the course??
It's simple. You charge $55 because you're greedy.
Hey man what is the average time that it takes for you or your employees to take the print off of the printer and load a new print?
Your energy in the US is so cheap q.q We pay like 0.35 to 0.45€ per kWh, thats like 0.37-0.47$ per kWh.
Please don't forget the scanner project video! Can't wait to see it!
OK, I'm a newbie to this, so besides all the stuff you mentioned, I have a big question...What do people buy that is 3D printed? Secondly, do you create the designs for them, or do people just give you a generic vague idea of what they want? I'm confused because if people want 3D printed stuff, why don't they just design and print them themselves? Help me understand what people want out there in digital land! Thanks.
seems obvious but its because the majority of people don't own a 3d printer and or know how to design stuff in CAD? In the "digital land" anyone wants anything just gotta try different things and see what gets you the volume of sales you want, selling something popular will have more demand but also will have higher seller saturation while more niche items will have lower amounts of customers but less sellers
How often are you bed leveling your printers?
Is there any chance of an update on the course development. I think announcing a delay is fine - you're running your own business and that and life get's in the way. Also, when you do release, can you please consider any UK based subscribers (to the course) for any live sections?
Thank you so much for sharing with everybody. Outstanding.
If you're a product designer it makes it a little harder to pick a niche because for 20+ years my "job" has been in a ton of areas.
you bloody energy
hey travis why you don't sue the copycats
$20 an hour isn't even close to all of the costs of an employee.
Came to find out what that part was. Still don’t know lol 😂
Problem is i wouldn't pay any of those prices for any of that plastic printed stuff.
I have used to make it too simple, and maybe overpriced i guess, Ive set up price by hours of printing which was 1.50€ per hour + material cost from the slicer. Your pricing seems better to me
I love this worksheet as it helped me put real numbers in place that luckily aligned pretty well to my guestimate. I was shooting for a 25% margin, but was only getting 20%. One thing I did not see was if I can print X widgets in a single job, but sell them individually, how do I factor that? Is it just as simple as divide the final price by X, or is there something more advanced I should consider, like if a customer orders 2 units, my packaging and shipping is reduced slightly due to combining the units in one package for shipment. So far I have been just dividing by X as that is the easy way and may generate a slightly larger margin on a multiple piece order. Thanks for putting this together.
Copycats will visit your site too, and fees are cheaper than setting up a shopify.
This sounds like an ad
Do you have a link to your store
I understand you have a business predicated on 3D printing. But wouldn't you make more if you just went with injection molding for lots of your parts?
Your math is wrong you said its about 8 buck and 60% makup doesnt equal 20 buck in no math. 8+50%=12 bucks i used 50 to be simplire.
I'd pay about $40, and i don't even have a 3d Printer... YET
Lol, i am 17 yo and i have 34 bambulabs.
There's so much missing here. Overheads (rent, internet, mobile, lights, insurance, accounting, miscellaneous office expenses like coffee, dishwashing materials etc), lost time of production when a machine breaks down, marketing, whatever cut the interface you sell with takes (eg Shopify, Amazon), merchant fees (might be included in the previous one), the cost of returns (hopefully you have none but that's unrealistic). On top of that you have to account for the cost of capital to set your business up - whatevr money you invested in machines and parts is money that could have been invested in the share market or elsewhere - so there's a interest cost to that. Also labour calculations were just off - while it may only take you 20 mins to do something, it's totally unrealistic to think that you use 100% of your time productively. I'd probably double the labor cost because for every hour you spend working on a part, you probably spend another hour repairing machines, ordering materials, keeping track of invoices, answering calls , designing etc.
Great information thanks!
