The worst he could've done was the eye shot, but even then the heavy clearly has some absurd regen so assuming he'd be able to heal his eye back to use isn't too hard. Plus that wasn't even an ammo issue, it was the engie's arrival, which makes a ton of sense. If you had a giant pet that you'd known to always be able to kill anything it comes across with ease, and heard it roaring for far too long for how many enemies were in the area, THEN heard it struggling and straining, just to round a corner and see some random guy have your pet trapped on the floor, rifle pointed to it's eye, I'd say it'd be pretty believable for you to instantly start firing your gun too
