Dehydrated Chicken Curry and Channel Change Announcement
Today we'll be cooking a dehydrated chicken curry recipe overlooking the Baldface Mountains in New Hampshire. We also share details on how we will be changing our RUclips focus back to an old channel I've had for a long time called OutdoorTraveler. On that channel, we will have some similar content but will also be starting a teardrop trailer build series where we create a small trailer built for camping in the winter.
Please join us over at the OutdoorTraveler channel and subscribe to that channel for all our new content.

Peaceful Mid Fall Hike with an Unfortunate Mac and Cheese Recipe | Camping Food
Просмотров 403 года назад
Join us on a peaceful hike in mid-fall where we attempt to create a homemade mac and cheese in the woods. We experiment with using dirt in an aluminum pan as a substitute for a heavy cast iron pan, which we hope will prevent burning. The meal didn't work out exactly as planned but it was a great day anyway and a beautiful hike. Instagram: frmeals Music from Epidemic Sound: (referr...
Camping Meals, Sunset Kayaking with Spanish Chicken and Rice
Просмотров 773 года назад
Join us as we experiment with using dehydrated chicken in a meal made for travel. This simple Spanish Chicken and Rice recipe is great for when you need to save on storage space since it packs down very nicely. The rehydrated chicken has a good texture when finely shredded. I cooked this meal while kayaking on Suncook Lake. It was late in the day and the sun was low in the sky. On the way back ...
Camping Food Storage: Best Method for Hanging a Bear Bag | Carabiner Method
Просмотров 9 тыс.3 года назад
This method for hanging a bear bag is by far the best out there. It can handle light loads, heavy loads, or anything in between because it does not require any rubbing of rope against a tree while under load. This means no getting your bag caught in a tree or being unable to pull your rope around a high friction branch when your bag is too heavy. When camping with friends, I often pull multiple...
Camping Food with an AMAZING Creamy Risotto | Lost on the Trail
Просмотров 1353 года назад
Join me as I find my way through the forest to make this delicious meal. It is probably one of the most difficult camp meals I've made given the very specific moisture content needed in the final product. Fortunately, I nailed it on this one and was extremely happy about how it tasted. Nothing is better than a hot bowl of risotto when you're hungry. The thick sauce is full of flavor and very fi...
Planning Food for a Multiday Backpacking Trip
Просмотров 913 года назад
In this video, we talk about a strategy for how to properly plan for your food needs on a multiday trip into remote locations. These tips apply to any high exertion activity including backpacking, canoeing/kayaking, bike touring, etc. I developed this strategy during my through-hike of the Appalachian Trail several years ago and have continued to use it ever since. Using this method, I don't go...
Fall Foliage New England with Nutty Pumpkin Pasta
Просмотров 213 года назад
Join us as we take a hike during the start of fall foliage season. The meal we will be cooking today is a pumpkin pasta recipe with walnuts. The meal is very filling and the nut and pumpkin flavors really stand out. Make sure you have a big pot to cook the pasta in and to mix in the sauce. The sauce absorbs a lot of water so don't be shy about adding liquid at the start of your cook to keep it ...
Camp Corn Cheese Tortellini on the Shore of Acadia
Просмотров 204 года назад
In this video I prepare a dehydrated corn cheese tortellini recipe on the southwest shore of Acadia National Park in Maine. This recipe requires the use of either two pots or one pot and a large bowl. The dish is very flavorful and filling with a little bit of spice. The recipe demands a large amount of water for cooking so make sure you have a decent supply of potable water if you pack this me...

    Sorry but it is way to low and to close to the tree trunk. No challenge at all for a bear. Use your method on a rope suspended between two trees then it can be up at least 12 feet and 8 or more from a tree. You have just been lucky if that has been working if any camp bears have been around.

    That bag is WAY too close to the tree. A bear climb the tree and take it down with no problem. You're going to wake up to no food bag.

    What a great suggestion for using one rope to create a pulley. I’ve seen other techniques that use two ropes, the second stops the first from being rubbed against the tree under load and also is used to create the 2-1 pulley. I tried your method in my back yard and hoisted 10 lb of weight up. I also used the pct method to save having to tie the pull line to a tree but of course that’s not necessary.

    The food bag should be 10 feet away from the tree and 10 feet up from the ground. Swap out your carabiner for a 1/4" pulley and use the pulley system instead of saying use a carabiner as a pulley, use an actual pulley. The pulley is available at most hardware stores and will only cost a couple bucks, much less than a carabiner and it won't fray your cordage. Sorry.

    I would use a Kalmyk loop a form of a bowline. Quick Release. The only place I'd use the carabiner is where you're using it for a pulley,

    I tried this with a very heavy food bag and my rope frayed. The portion of rope, just below the in-line loop, remains static and never moves. As you pull the food up, the moving rope rubs against this static portion. There’s nothing that keeps these portions of rope separated. I think heavier food makes it likely they come together and rub. I only discovered this at the end of the trip when I dismantled everything. Thank god the badly frayed rope didn’t fail. I think it’s better to use $3 pulleys from the hardware store - they guarantee the ropes stay separated. Has this ever happened to you? Do you have any advice?

    It is a scary morning when you wake up and your bag is gone. I have only had mice get in my bag a couple of times (always in Vermont), but my buddy Shortstack lost his food bag on the Tahoe Rim Trail. Makes you look over both your shoulders when you dig your morning cat hole! May need to try this out. Thanks!

    So... this looks pretty delicious. My worry would be the creamy aspect of the meal. I usually prefer foods with easy cleanups.. How do you clean your dishes in the backcountry with out polluting a water source?

    • @freerangemeals816
      @freerangemeals816 4 года назад

      My pot leaning method is a bit non-standard but I've been doing it for years and I've never gotten sick. What I do is get some dirt and scour out the pot. The loose dirt gets broadcast into the woods with any food particles. Once I think the pot is sufficiently clean, then I gather water and use that to rinse the dirt off the pot. That water gets thrown into the woods. I never use any form of soap. It's just one more thing to carry and like you're implying, it's something I don't want to get into the water system. This particular meal, and most other's with a cheese component, can stick very solidly to the bottom where the burner hits the pot. You may need to soak your pot overnight in order to get it really clean. I would not consider this, or any cheese based meal, easy cleanup.

    How long does it take to reheat the sauce on this one? You indicate the chicken boilion takes longer to reheat. Any way to speed it up?

    • @freerangemeals816
      @freerangemeals816 4 года назад

      For the chicken bouillon, if you had a water bottle you didn't mind making taste like chicken soup, you could probably add the bouillon cube with some water in while still hiking and give it a shake every now and then. This should break the cube up after a while. Then just use that as your first batch of water to boil. For the sauce time, it wasn't very long. Just a couple minutes. It went a lot faster than I was expecting and absorbed the water a lot faster too. So watch for burning.

    Could you give a couple stats on this? How long did it take to cook at home vs how long did it take to rehydrate? What is weight pre vs post dehydration?

    • @freerangemeals816
      @freerangemeals816 4 года назад

      Weight I didn't track so I'm not sure on specifics. It's definitely lighter post dehydration because you loose all the water weight. Cook times for the kitchen I have on the website. The link to the recipe is in the description. When rehydrating, I'd guess it took around 10 minutes but I don't have a timer when cooking so that's just a guess. Rehydration is all about frequent tasting to see when you need to add more water and when things are warm and soft enough. That being said I don't think anything I make is near the 20 minutes mark.

  • @Waziliov
    @Waziliov 4 года назад

    How much weight are each of these looking at when carrying the ingredients vs dehydrating?

    • @freerangemeals816
      @freerangemeals816 4 года назад

      Not sure on the specifics. There is decrease for sure. All the water I add back in when cooking is weight removed when carrying.

  • @Waziliov

    Thoughts on using a pot coozy when rehydrating to keep the chili warm?

    • @freerangemeals816
      @freerangemeals816 4 года назад

      Once you get the water up to temperature, it's a great way to save on fuel. I've never had one myself because I prefer to reduce the number of "things" in my bag (especially less durable things) but I've seen others use them to great effect often.

  • @Waziliov
    @Waziliov 4 года назад

    What are your thoughts on vacuum sealing?

    • @freerangemeals816
      @freerangemeals816 4 года назад

      If you get a moisture absorber pack in there, I think it would extend the shelf life of your food dramatically. It could also reduce packaging bulk in your bag since it squishes down. Personally I like using a resealable bag since I can then use it as a garbage bag but you only need so many garbage bags per trip so vacuum becomes more attractive when you have more meals for a given trip.

    • @Waziliov
      @Waziliov 4 года назад

      @@freerangemeals816 whats the shelf life without the pack? Or with? If I get a winter of good food prep for the the 3 seasons of backpacking I am not too cowardly to do, I would love to know how long I could expect dehydrated meals to last

    • @freerangemeals816
      @freerangemeals816 4 года назад

      I've never tested it so I don't really know. When I store a meal for a future trip, I always store it frozen to be safe. In order to really know how long it lasts, you'd have to run tests on your specific method of storage. Freezer bag vs storage bag. Hefty vs Ziplock. Vacuum seal with and without moisture absorbtion. It all matters.
