I use an iron for clothing, works fantastic
That looks SO GOOD!!!
Can you use fabric Glue instead of heat and bond?
Ooh I don’t know! I’ve seen some people make a starch mixture but I haven’t tried it myself
Why so many dislikes? I don't understand.
Thank you for your video. I'm also one of the lucky few which came across your wonderful vids. The other online tutorial gives so much unnecessary information. Yours is the to point and exactly what I needed. One question I have : does your boards not warp when apply the glue and book fabric?
I put the cover under something flat and heavy while it dries to avoid warping!
Thank goodness you’re Australian because all the other bookbinding people I find are not and so have easier access to book cloth
what vinyl do you use? I'm having so much trouble getting mine to stick :(
I have unresolved trauma from vinyl not sticking... for metallics unfortunately the more expensive brands work best (cricut) and try burnishing it lots before you peel it . It's a lot of trial and error depending on the brand you buy.
Thank you for this awesome series of tutorials! I just finished my first rebinding of a paperback today and it looks great thanks to your help :) can’t wait to make more!!
So happy you're enjoying the series! 🙂
Great video. I just wish the music volume was a little lower. Was watching late at night and found myself turning the volume down due to the music, but then needing to turn it back up every time you speak. =/
Love the video! One question that came to mind was the 1cm hinge you use. Some other experienced people (of which I am not), recommend a 7mm hinge as a good rule of thumb. If I used a 7mm hinge, would I then cut my front and back boards to just the (width of the text block), instead of ((width of the text block) - 3mm) like you suggest in the video? A 1cm hinge is 3mm larger than my 7mm hinge, so I wasn't sure if I needed to account for that. Sorry if this is an amateur question! :) Can't find any straightforward answers anywhere.
Yes that's exactly right! Since this video, I've gone to a smaller hinge space as well so will be doing the same
Wow. I JUST bought a fabric for a rebind (my first). This is soo helpful.
Perfect timing!
Leaving !! Can't stand this music.
Nobody cares what you think of the music.
Does anyone have experience of using Olycraft Self Adhesive book cloth? Does it adhere to the boards properly? I feel like Pva glue is my enemy, it always gets everywhere despite everything!
where do you get the mull from? Nvm, there's in the description! For ppl like me please shout it out loud during the video that everything you use is in the description box! Thanks for all the info!
I've just ordered a basic book binding kit and your video is going to help me get started. Thank you so much for a clear and concise lesson.
I was watching with my mouth open I HAD NO IDEA YOU CAN DO THOSE SHINY PIECES LIKE THAT!! <3
Thank you!
In college, my book binding professor said that the grain direction of the book cloth does matter because over time as the books age and encounter moisture in the air, the grain will start to curl the book covers (yes, even the hard backs) if the grain direction doesn’t match the grain direction of the book board.
That's absolutely right - I always pay attention to grain direction if i can but sometimes the material available is the wrong grain direction and I would rather use it than have it go to waste. I think most hobby book binders would have the same approach
Okay dumb question here but no one is really saying/showing it or I just missed it completely with all the book rebinding videos I’ve watched but you do glue the text box spine to the new cover spine right?? Again sorry for the question but can someone please solve the riddle that just went over my head 😅.
You don't glue the spine! Just the front and back covers so the book has space to move
I must be missing something....you're saying millimeters but my millimeter ruler has small spacing...but my centimeter ruler looks like your millimeters.
😂
In actuality, the stuff you offer has been really beneficial to us. Please answer this simple question for me: What is the proper thickness for the book cover? and book spine? thank you.
1.7mm for small books, 1.9mm for standard books, 2.1mm for large books such as tomes.
@bkpickell thank you 🙏
philosophers stone?
The actual title. It was renamed in 'Murica cus they wouldn't know what a philosopher was 😂
Don’t EVER soak paintbrushes especially overnight. It ruins them. The glue that holds them together will disintegrate and the brush will come apart. Use dish soap and water to clean straight away.
i literally come back to this video every single time i use my Silhouette for book covers. you're a lifesaver, thank you! <3
How does one could get this paper you're ironing? is it a special paper? can i buy it?
I’ve started making a bound journal from scratch for a friend and your videos are so informative! I have to practice making the book cloth but you’ve helped me do every step I needed to learn.
Yay! I’m so glad it’s been helpful 🫶
Can you please write al exactly names down? Not every tool or thing i need i understand so i dont know how to search about?
Great video. Beautiful hardcover.
how did you install the bookmark??
Is 'heat n bond' interfacing? I have so much interfacing at home and its iron-on where it bonds with heat, so is it the same thing? EDIT: okay, nope. This isn't quite that. But I got a very sturdy interfacing that I feel would remove the need for tissue paper, but does that work generally?
I want to try doing this so bad!
I am so happy to have found this video! I am debating on whether I should try to start bookbinding. I really want to, but I want to be sure what I'm getting into. Thank you for your easy-to-follow videos! Question: What machine do you use to make the cuts on the heat transfer vinyl? Cricut? Could you make a video that shows how you do that? Thank you in advance!!
I've seen other book binders say you shouldn't put the glue all the way to the edge of the block when casing in because it makes it harder to open the cover fully, but you don't seem to have that issue. Also how do you resist not opening the book and checking the end papers are smooth and flat once you glue them? I'd be tempted to take the bone folder to them and have seen others do that too!
ive been binging binding videos recently and this is absolutely one of the best ive seen so far. i cant thank you enough for not cutting through the work to save the viewers time, i get so confused by that
Thank you so much for the tutorial! Is it possible to use viscose or polyester fabric for the book cloth? Or only cotton?
Hi just wondering What the front and end papers are? Are they just normal paper? 1:27
I usually use a slightly thicker card stock but normal paper would also work
I ordered a book and i found i it slightly damaged so i thought avout tossing it , and i think this the sign for me to start :)
Perfect opportunity!!
Can you also just use the cotton fabric for bookbinding?
It wouldn’t work because the glue would seep straight through the cotton fabric!
at 4:30 when you get to the cardstock, how thick should that be? You said 5 inches, but it's card stock, so I'm guessing mm?
Okay so- this is like my first time ever commenting. And i just had to bc ur so flipping underrated.
I came here from Harlee on TikTok after she rebound the Harry Potter series, delighted to discover you’re an Aussie! This is a fantastic resource, thank you for the time you put into this!!! Super excited to begin my book binding journey ☺️☺️☺️
Is there any alternative to a machine to cut out your patterns?
Where did you get the charms from?
I adore this!!!! I can’t wait to start binding my own book!
Is there any chance that you could maybe put your designs up for sale/free so we can use them to use for our own book cover?
Hey, Bunnings sells a heat proof ironing mat, for $27.83. It's 90cm x 60cm. I haven't bought it (yet) but it might help with that pattern coming through.
Thanks!!!
Such a good idea!!
I have a thing that is called something like „Glue Eraser“. It is basically a pretty hard type of gum with indents and it helped me in many cases to get rid of those unhappy glue accidents. Maybe you can google it and try it out although I think the success also depends of the kind of glue you are using. Good luck and greetings from Germany - Andrea ❤️
Thank you for this!
So incredibly helpful! I've been binding for a couple of years and have always had trouble with measurements of my casing. Everyone has always told me to make the width of my cover 3mm longer than the text block not smaller. Can't wait to try this method on my current project!
Fingers crossed for you!!
Very interesting! Is there a way to make fancy covers like this / HTV without a circut / silhouette machine? I'd love to try my hand at this but investing in one of those machines is a little out of my price range ATM
I totally understand, they’re expensive af. I’m going to be trying a few different options in my next videos so keep an eye out for that!
A quick googlie shows you can get your designs cut and mailed to you, like, there's gigabunch on Etsy, all over the world. Costs aren't too bad. Find one near you and try it a few times. I am sorely, sorely tempted to buy one, but, I am hampered by three things - 1 - A have a friend with one already so I can get stuff cut for cost, 2 - I don't often have four trillion currency units sitting around, and 3 - I just can't shake how annoying the brand name is.
