A Trip Around the Patch

The backyard patch. I live in subtropical SE Queensland on a 800m2 block. This is a second year garden which I'm beginning to turn into a more self-sufficient permaculture style patch. We have 4 chickens which we use to compost waste, fertilise the garden and collect eggs. There's 5 garden beds in the patch - one long bed which mainly holds fruiting trees and herbs, three taller square beds for...

      I’ve had an easily for 10+ years - you can add fruit via fresh, compote, jam even - you can sieve it and make labneh cheese and add chopped herbs, garlic etc. There’s a really good Lebanese woman who shows how to do labneh balls in oil that keeps for ages, she’s on here as well. I’m going to try this trick but dried milk has gone up through the roof and l wonder if the culture weakens over time though.

    The kids area looks fantastic! Good to have the vege/chook patch where it is but you might need some herbs closer to the house for cooking. You can manage herbs in a quite pretty way. I'd double the height of your vege beds as well... or more eventually. I did two sleepers and cursed at the amount of dirt I had to get in, but remember the eventual aim is to get them to about a metre high with compost. Plan for a fantastic compost setup near you house (in a hidden spot). It won't smell but you don't want to walk to far. Final point, is that I'd get my trees in first - and more than you are currently thinking. Fruit trees can provide a lot of shade eventually in our summer. Ya coup looks great. Hopefully, I haven't been just too helpful mate. LOL.

    Gday Marty here from Martys Garden. Look at that awesome space you have to prepare. Thanks for sharing with me. You must be over the moon? I would be really looking into the design, so you can grow chemical free and keep pests managed by the wildlife. Windbreaks and native verge to attract birds, wildlife corridors etc so they can come and hunt and be safe. Keep me posted if you have time, as I am also on the lookout for upcoming stories for my show and newsletter. Cheers Marty ps: How often will the videos come out?

    • @thesunnysidehomestead6392
      @thesunnysidehomestead6392 5 лет назад

      Cheers for checking it out mate! I hadn’t thought about native verges. I’ll have to look at that for sure. Do you mean planting native garden beds amongst the vegetables and fruit trees? My plan was to have all natives along the back fence. You’ve got me thinking now! I’m hoping to get one video out each week but for now I’m trying to get a few out.

    • @martysgarden
      @martysgarden 5 лет назад

      @@thesunnysidehomestead6392 a native verge is on the boundaries, or a small windbreak near the orchard or veggie patch. They can also contain edible permanent trees, which is a good idea. Large edible trees like Avocados can do well like this. You can sprout your own from seed and see if they grow well before buying the grafted varieties. They take much longer to fruit, but are awesome in the verge. Avo's you can prune back too!
