I am a film maker based in Hobart, Tasmania, a wee little island sometimes left off maps of Australia. Danielle and I love to combine travel, movement, nature, stories, and surprises, and started bikepacking in 2017 after looking for a new “travel sport” to replace rock climbing. I started making films of our bikepacking adventures in 2018 after finding a GoPro washed up on our local beach, and I've been hooked ever since.
Solo winter bikepacking in Tasmania
Tasmania's Central Highlands are a stunning place to ride in the winter. 'Taking the Slow Track' is a short film shot on an overnight ride where there was little chance of seeing another person. It gave me a chance to slow down, ride, film, camp by a frozen lake and do some chilly hike-a-bike over a frozen water way. It was also a chance for me to test my gear for a longer upcoming trip to Peru.

We followed the Saw Back Ridge Track to the abandoned mining town of Adamsfield, before heading to a campsite on the edge of Lake Gordon. Managed to capture a faint Aurora over the lake in the early morning hours. If you enjoyed the film, please like and subscribe. Thanks. Instagram: mick.turnbull...
Annapurna: Not as Planned
Просмотров 157 тыс.Год назад
In October 2022, we set out from Pokhara to bikepack the 386km Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. We followed the track that runs parallel to the hiking trail, hoping to cross over Thorong La pass. A late-season weather event delivered days of snow and rain, washed away roads and damaged communications. So despite all our preparation, things didn't quite go to plan... Enjoy 'Annapurna: Not as planned'...

A Pinch of Type 2: Bikepacking the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route
Great video! Beautiful.
Thankyou for taking the effort respecting your bike and drivetrain by not submerging your bike walking it through water crossings. Seen it way too often in other bike packing videos.
Awesome video Mick - so many great shots. Those night shots of the stars were just stunning. Derek in Ottawa.
Many thanks!
This loop looks fantastic. How long did it take you?
Took about 3 weeks of riding. We caught a bus twice to save us time. Really varied loop.
Cold in austrailia mtfs😱
Incredible
Really good stuff - love the editing and the shots! Can I ask what equipment you're using to film and photograph? Particularly love the night time laps and photos.
Thanks. I use a Panasonic GH5 (not normally an astro camera) and a Leica 10-25mm f1.7 lens. I also have a 50-200mm f2.8-4.0 lens that I use for birds etc. Hope this helps.
@@MickTurnbullFilms brilliant! Thank you for the quick reply. I'm getting into some bike packing and trying to decide what gear to take with me... I have go pros, a few drones and for my nicer camera a Sony A7iii with a few lenses. Although I'd like to think my gopros and iPhone can capture what I need with much less bulk and weight, I think the nicer cameras are probably necessary?
I carry my camera on my back to reduce the vibrations. I've never had any issues doing it this way. I use a Mindshift Photocross 10 as it allows me to keep the bag on my back whilst I acccess the camera. Good luck with it.
Great vid, brillz editing/production. Bought a new subscriber with this. Cheers
Awesome, thank you!
I've been watching RUclips edits/films/clips/nonsense for years and never have I before felt the need to subscribe to a channel. But I subscribed after watching this. Also, I've been thinking about selling my bikepacking bike. Not any more. I'm inspired to plan another trip and get out there, maybe filming it this time. Thank you.
So good to hear. Hope you get out on some rad trips. Cheers
How are you protecting the camera from vibrations? In the backpack?
I carry the camera in a mindshift photocross 10. Been using it for years and never had any issues with the camera.
Looks a bit chilly! Thanks for another great video 😍
Always a pleasure...and the remarkable thing is that after crossing that frozen water barefoot, you had to go back and get the camera!!
Great video, nice work Mick
Thanks 👍
Another beautiful video. Thank you
Hey Mick, I'll really admire your production quality. I use a point and shoot, drone + go pro right now, but I'm looking to upgrade. Can you tell me what camera and lens you use?
Thanks heaps. For this film, I used my Panasonic GH5 and the Leica 10-25mm f1.7. Really like it, but it's a bit bigger than most people carry.
How many days food can you carry max and water on this setup
On this setup - bout 3 days. But with the Ortlieb Fork Bags, I can carry 5 days food and unto 10 litres of water.
Shake down ride always good ps camera skills are great
Very pleasing to the senses. Another fabulous film.
Lovely production
Much appreciated
Some lovely moments in there Mick. Always love seeing your work on here. Happy travels :)
Many thanks!
Beautiful as usual Mick. You make me want to move to Tassie. Enjoy your overseas trip 👍
Cheers - it's a cool little part of the world.
Excellent!
Geeeeeez you’re harder man than me. My feet hurt watching - love your stuff Mick! Beauty vid.
Thanks heaps.
Nice, I just picked up a Rode videomic pro, gotta play around with it a bit. Cheers mate!
Nice one!
What do you use for a mic while out on a ride?
I use a Rode Video Mic NTG - a bit big but captures the sounds I want.
Frozen lake and shorts, got to be an Aussie, great camera work.
Ha! Thanks.
Nice one! Geez, that morning looked a bit fresh. Too cold for me mate.
It was! Needed a warmer mat than I had. Thanks for watching.
Nice work Mick! As always your audio really enriches the clips. Great edit, beautiful scenery! Heck of an icy water crossing!
Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, the icy water was a bit unexpected!
amazing video!
Mick, you re an animal walking through that icy creek barefooted! Great star footage as well. Cheers mate!
Thanks 👍
Those stars looked incredible. Whole trip would have been worth it just to see that beautiful sky.
Love your work Mick! Great scenery, bike and especially your editing. Well done.
Awesome! Thank you!

Que cámara usas? ❤
Panasonic GH5.
watching from malaysia guys ❤
Nice work! I feel like I just watched an excellent movie trailer, now I want to see the full length feature. It would be great if you released full length less produced versions as well. I feel that the raw video gives the watcher the feeling of being along for the ride. Looks like it was a great trip!
Thanks. When I first started I made very short highlight reels. As I have gained experience, I am now making longer films - all part of the learning journey.
@@MickTurnbullFilms Got it👍 I never made it that far with my RUclips efforts. I know how much work goes into it. I watched all of your videos this evening. Working a 19 hour shift with a lot of downtime. Really enjoyed them! It made me want to go bikepacking in Australia and Tasmania !
Hi Mick, What an amazing documentary! We understand the amount of time it requires to make such videos, and we appreciate you for sharing our wonderful country with the world. We're eager to follow your next adventure. Take care, ride safely, and we wish you all the very best!
Many thanks! Appreciate the support and glad you enjoyed.
As of April 2024, the Big Water VP gas station is closed for renovations. You will have to ride 6 miles further one way to reach a Flying J gas station on the border of Arizona. Make sure to call the VP before your trip and verify whether or not they have reopened.
That's good to know. Thanks for sharing.
Now THATS a Sunset.
Wonderful video. I'm planning on biking it in 2025.
Hope you enjoy it! Such a fun route.
High quality vlog mate.new subscriber.good on yer😊
Thanks 👍
For anyone riding the route, the Needles Visitor Center has water year around. FYI.
However, I don't know if it's possible to get by the guard gate to the visitor center, without paying the national park fee? Maybe someone knows. Great videos!
The images are stunning, great work. I’m glad I found your channel
Awesome, thank you!
