I am a film maker based in Hobart, Tasmania, a wee little island sometimes left off maps of Australia. Danielle and I love to combine travel, movement, nature, stories, and surprises, and started bikepacking in 2017 after looking for a new “travel sport” to replace rock climbing. I started making films of our bikepacking adventures in 2018 after finding a GoPro washed up on our local beach, and I've been hooked ever since.
Nepal - Cinematic Reel
Nepal - an explosion of contrasts between the chaos in the cities and the peaceful way of life in the mountains. The people were incredibly friendly, and the scenery a feast for the eyes. In 2022 we spent 4 weeks in Nepal - this is my highlight reel from that trip.

Riding High: Bikepacking Peru

Cordilleras Blanca and Huayuash in the Peruvian Andes are a mighty fine place to go cycling. In July 2024 we spent four weeks bikepacking two loops - one in the Cordillera Blanca and one in the Cordillera Huayuash of Peru. We only slept below 3,000m on two occasions, crossing many 4,000m passes - the highest at just under 4,900m (16,000ft). We camped under snow capped peaks, hiked our bikes up ...

Solo winter bikepacking in Tasmania

Tasmania's Central Highlands are a stunning place to ride in the winter. 'Taking the Slow Track' is a short film shot on an overnight ride where there was little chance of seeing another person. It gave me a chance to slow down, ride, film, camp by a frozen lake and do some chilly hike-a-bike over a frozen water way. It was also a chance for me to test my gear for a longer upcoming trip to Peru...

In October 2022, we set out from Pokhara to cycle the 386km Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. We followed the track that runs parallel to the hiking trail, hoping to cross over Thorong La pass. A late-season weather event delivered days of snow and rain, washed away roads and damaged communications. So despite all our preparation, things didn't quite go to plan... Good idea. I’ll add it to the list for the future.
This is a great video of your "backyard adventure". Thanks for sharing.
Super excellent productions…. Loved it!
Nice. I love that area. I road on motorcycles with my buddy on the burr trail switchbacks, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and Canyonlands. Would love to do it on a bike. Surprised you didn't hit more sand. Thanks for posting.
It's a great place to ride, glad you enjoyed!
🇳🇵🇳🇵🇳🇵💚💚💚
Well done. Thanks.
Cheers, thanks for watching!
Amazing trip! Thanks for this beautiful vídeo. I saw the route is on the link above, i asked about the gears, bag and other things and i also found it on the link. Thanks again for sharing all your knowledge about bikepacking
You are most welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed.
Great vid & scenary. 250cc motorcycles might have been a bit more fun? I know that defeats your purpose...just saying.
Ha! Probably more fun, but we enjoy the pace and challenge of doing it on bicycles. Thanks for watching.
Impressive video! I like the helmet-hat of Mick.
Ha! Thanks.
Did the Huascaran Loop with my dad 1 month ago and this film brought back so many amazing memories, thanks for that ! Also, made my footage looks terrible hahahah. Perfect documentary!! Congrats! PS: I did the Huayhuash loop (hiking) and the Great Peru Divide (also amazing). Cycling all the way from Ushuaia to alaksa - @hermanodasamericas
Photography top notch Nat Geo standard and commentary snappy.Having travelling to Nepal many times from Singapore to appreciate it's beauty and it's kind peoples, you have captured in perfectly❤😊

Awesome video - looked like quite an adventure!
Mike this is absolutely amazing and so inspirational thank you so much for sharing. It says so much without saying anything. I’ll probably watch it loads cos i’m doing ACT sept 25 keep me buzzing.
Brilliant. Thank you. Cheers and Best wishes from the south west corner of dowununder.
Cheers! Thanks for watching.
I'm guessing 'Type 2' fun is similar to 'embracing the suck'?
Yep, that’s type 2 fun!
So beautiful. Why no other rider on the router ?
Thanks. We only met a few others riding, not sure why.
😍
Amazing!! 👏👏👏
Beautiful Mick! No joke I got halfway through and had to stop and write some notes for myself for a video idea. You took about 90 seconds to inspire me! P.s love the mask transitions 👌
Great Point. Midweek versus weekend. its Night & Day. Drunk yahoos in ATV’s all over the place.
Even more glad to hear that. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful!
mint 💯
Thank you for sharing your journey with us!
Hi Mick, Great video. I'm trying to decide between Red Centre and Munda Biddi , likely 1st 2 weeks of April. I realize it might be hot on Red Centre at that time but heat aside, if you had to pick one which one would you choose ?
Hey Don, tough question. I like the Red Centre a lot, but first 2 weeks of April it would be best to do the Munda Biddi because of potential for hot temps in Central Oz.
@@MickTurnbullFilms Great info. Also Perth is lot easier to get to from US. thanks for quick reply.
👍
6:27 The world is upside down right now. I have never seen anyone eat a pringle like that before.
Ha. All for dramatic effect I’m sure. Thanks for watching.
Wow ❤
Maybe take some voice lessons and shed the Frye at the end of every sentence . Supposed to be gravel riding not gravel voice . It's difficult to listen to . Why do women do that ?
Incredible! Thanks for sharing Mick.
Far out Mick! Loved it. Man that scenery is stunning.
Thanks 👍
That was such an inspiring video - Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
Awesome, thank you!
Mick nice to have found your videos and adventures!!! Great filming and scenery 🔝🔝!! I have always wanted to travel to Australia and watching your video it is like being there!! Thank you 🙏🏼!! Cheers from Spain 🇪🇸!! 😊
Thanks heaps. Hope you get a chance to get to Oz one day.
That morning sun finally clearing the peaks must have been such a treat on the frigid body. This looks like a fall trip no?
The sun was SO welcome! We did this trip in July.
@@MickTurnbullFilms Wow. It makes sense altitudes above 15 - 17 000 its always fall in the summer. Crazy stamina you guys have .
Must have been bitching hot😊
A few days were. Most were OK.
Thank for having us! I was there this year, but had a really bad time. Felt absolutely lonely and foreign to everything... still feels unreal, may I have to come back :)
👍👍👍👍👍👍🚲🚲🚲🚲
Much respect, and thanks for a great video. I'm an old fart and rode Telluride to Moab, and half of the Great Divide. Pushing uphill and then walking downhill over rocky and rutted is definitely "Type Two Fun". Q: Have you ever tried drop bars like the Salsa Cowchipper? The older I get (71), the shorter distance I can ride with flat bars (even Jones -H), I've switched to Cowchipper drop bars which creates a trade-off of better comfort for distance, but scarier downhills on loose steep stuff. A bit more downhill walking vs comfort on open spaces. Happy trails!☮
Thanks Mike. I haven't used drop bars on the Surly....yet! Currently, I find the Jones bars really comfortable. Glad you enjoyed. Happy trails!
What an epic bikepacking adventure across Utah! Covering 800 miles from Salt Lake City to Moab sounds incredible, especially with those well-known routes like the Trans Rockies Connector, Bears Ears Loop, and Grand Staircase. The variety of landscapes Utah offers, from rugged mountains to dramatic plateaus, must have made this an unforgettable journey. Perfect way to experience the raw beauty of Utah over 3 weeks! 🚴🌄 Really awesome video!
What Surly model are you riding? Great video!
Thanks. Bikes are ECRs - they don’t make them anymore.
@@MickTurnbullFilms That's what I thought, I sold mine and kick myself because now I can't find another one, great bikes!! Love the video!
@@brianpouillon1353 They had one in our local bike shop here until the start of this year - brand new. That would be a collectors item now!
Amazing video! Thank you so much:)
Incredible scenery, you had my attention from the start when you said 47 km climb 😂 Can i ask where in Australia the narrator is from? I live in Sydney & between the "west syd" accent & the inner city migrants I don't really hear accents as unique as hers often
Thanks heaps. Danielle lives in Tasmania now.
So inspiring on a drizzly winter night in the Pac NW of the US. Thanks for the beautiful filming and great narration!!
Thanks heaps!
I double that here from Seattle
Another superb film Mick and Danielle. Thank you. Magnificent landscapes and geography. That part of the USA is wonderful. What a pity about the other part, those so called MAGA homo sapiens. Anyway cheers, thank you once again, regards and best wishes from our corner of the woods.
Great video Mick and Danielle! Awesome footage and fine storytelling! Thanks for sharing the adventure!
Love this type of routes! Thanks for showing us your adventures. Cheers from Norway 🇳🇴
Just catching up on your videos Mick. Beautiful insight into central Australia. Camera work and editing is superb. Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪
Wow. Thank you! I'm pretty happy with my local bikepacking, which in Utah isn't too shabby. But this!!......🧠🐡 The life I have chosen means I will never get to do this.... But I very much appreciate living it vicariously through such a beautifully and honestly portrayed story. Thanks again$$
Thanks heaps. Really glad you enjoyed.
Really inspiring film , I’ve watched it several times now . I would be interested in what sort of equipment worked well for you in this environment.
Thanks heaps. The plan is to do a film in the next month of my setup I use on longer trips.
The tent peg Brake Lever, Legend!
Ha! Thanks.
