The Lakeland 100 | Ultra Tour of the Lake District
One of the biggest 100 miler races, the Lakeland 100 is a complete loop of the Lake District. Starting and finishing in the village of Coniston, the event also has a 50 mile option which starts at the halfway point. Whilst I've ran an over 200 miler race, this would actually be my first time entering a hundred. The race starts at 6pm on Friday and my goal was to finish by midnight on Saturday... 30 hours.

The West Highland Way is a 96 mile route from Milngavie in the Central belt of Scotland, all the way up to Fort William in the Highlands. It is one of Scotland's Great Trails. The WHW race is one of the worlds longest established ultra marathons and has been running for 38 years. This would be be first time entering the event although I'm certainly no stranger to the route having completing it ...

The Cateran Trail Ultramarathon | 55 Miles in the Scottish Highlands
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.4 месяца назад
This stunning race, organised by Rocket Events, follows the Cateran Trail. Starting and finishing in the Spittal of Glenshee, the 55 Mile loop takes in over 2000 metres of ascent as it follows old drove roads and ancient tracks across a varied terrain of farmland, forests and moors. Some of these routes follow the same ones used by the Caterans - fearsome cattle thieves from the Middle Ages, fr...

Discover the Isle of Bute - The West Island Way - Scotland's Great Trails

You've heard of the West Highland Way... Well let me introduce to you the West Island Way! Off the west coast of Scotland on the island of Bute, the WIW is around 50km although because I would start and finish in the main town of Rothesay, my day would be around 70km. A truly varied route of wide farm track, technical coastline and boggy moorland. It was another spectacular day, although whilst...
BEN LOMOND SUMMIT from Balmaha... and back again.
Просмотров 6867 месяцев назад
Longer than a Short... But shorter than a long.... A great wee challenge of a run. Starting in Balmaha on the banks of Loch Lomond, the route follows the West Highland Way along to Rowerdennan, before heading up the 'tourist' route to the summit of Ben Lomond (974 m). It then comes down the more technical Ptarmigan side to Rowerdennan then it's back along the West Highland Way to Balmaha. I thr...
Forth & Clyde and Union Canals - 106k - Scotland's Great Trails

17th December 2023....and another one of Scotland's Great Trails. The full canal network from Bowling (near Glasgow) on the west of Scotland across to Fountainbridge in Edinburgh on the east. The route is 106k (around 64 miles) and follows the tow paths of the Forth and Clyde Canal, switching to the Union Canal at Falkirk. Pretty much as flat as a pancake, this was a mental challenge as much as...

Running 70km from Glasgow to New Lanark following the River Clyde. A great day out exploring this full route for the first time. A real variety of trails and paths along the way. The route starts at the Glasgow's Riverside Museum (formally known as the Transport Musuem) and winds its way through town and out into the countryside. Finishing up at the UNESCO World Heritage Site - New Lanark... A ...

Join me on another training day as I run the Glen Loin Loop. The route starts in Arrochar at the top of Loch Long. I'll be doing the loop clockwise with a slight detour to climb Ben Vorlich, a Scottish Munro of 943 meters. Of course my little training buddy Charlie Chops will be joining me on this mini adventure. The Borders Abbey Way | 110k 🏴 Scotland's Great Trails

Also the route of the Run the Borders race. A truly historic route taking in the ruins of 4 amazing abbeys. The circular route of around 110 kilometres is another one of Scotland's Great Trails, and can be started at any point. We choose Melrose as this is where John Smith, my running partner for the day, lives. A hugely varied route, initially with a fair amount of road sections but this soon ...

West Highland Way 🏴 96 miles in 2 days
Soo many memories, thanks for the video, 3 days is an amazing achievement. I've walked the JMW in both directions. Great that it's never that far from civilisation to allow public transport to from start and end points of the sections. First time I did some double section days of Strathblane to Falkirk, Falkirk to Queensferry, Queensferry to Prestonpans and Prestonpans to Dunbar as part of my training for The British Heart Foundation 100km trek from Glasgow to Edinburgh . I too was delighted to pick up a certificate at the end, a lovely thing to have.
Superb video, truly inspirational
Still catching up with all your videos / adventures / achievements Paul. Nothing disappoints. Absolutely love this. I especially love that despite the effort you still take the time to appreciate things around you. That really is sooo important. Thank you for sharing as always. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Had a really great time watching this video Paul. Well done!!
Great video. Love the emotion at the end.
Funny I was just talking to a friend the other day about this race and how it's still one of the most emotional ones to finish!!
Just watched this video for the 3rd/4th time very inspirational and honestly well done you smashed it! Managed to get a spot for next year so can’t wait to give it a crack myself! Have a few question to ask someone who’s completed it as that distance is totally unknown to myself! If I could ask you a few question please let me know!
Great!! Of course, happy to help if I can! Just let me know!
@@TheRandomRunner during an event this size how much running do you do as Iv only done 50/100 milers where mostly is running but due to the size of this race is it run for a bit then walk and keep that going? Or do you get to a certain point where walking is all you can muster up ? And would poles be a benefit for this race ? Thank you!
Awesome video and congratulations. You deserve more subscribers.
Thanks so much.... Working on it!!
Watching your videos mr fit great stuff pal love it ❤😊
Thank you!! Glad you're enjoying them... Plenty more to come!!
awesome video
Thank you!!
Hey Paul. Only just picked up on your channel. Literally took up trail running a few weeks ago. Coming from a lifetime of international pole vaulting (Junior to Masters) and not running more than about 30 metres (😂) it has been quite a change. But at 71 I am so excited by the new challenge. Love watching videos like yours. Thank you so much for sharing your adventures. The videos are both enjoyable and inspiring. Good luck to you. I look forward to seeing you achieving more successes on your own journey. 👍🏻 Allan
Hi Allan, thanks so much for getting in touch! Very inspiring to hear your story and love the fact you've started trail running in your 70s!! Glad to hear you're enjoying the videos, plenty more to come!!
Paul, my friend tried and didn't quite manage to finish this year. I watched your video and foolishly wrote to the organisers to apply for a place in 2025. They have accepted me. My partner is delighted. She says she loves crewing but I think she mostly enjoys watching me suffer. I don't hold you responsible for what happens to me next year but just want you to know that you, and this video, have been my inspiration to give this a go.
Hi Chris, thanks for getting in touch! All the very best for next year... It's truly an epic adventure!!
Well done! I always enjoy watching your videos, such beautiful locations to run in, thanks very much its great to see the scenery and terrain!
Thank you so much! Yes very lucky to live somewhere with such stunning scenery! And still so many places to explore so plenty more videos to come!!
New to the Channel, I hope to do an ultra soon enough. But you make it look like it was a breeze. You didn't even break a sweat 😅 well done
Haha, I always wipe the sweat off before filming 😂 Good luck with the training and get something signed up, helps to have something to work to!
Fantastic
Thank you so much 😀
One of the worst ultra vids I've seen. No important life lessons to share after a long jog
This looked pretty brutal paul. Remember my first fandance carrying 45lbs in that westher up brecon beacons. Nice one 👍🏼
I guess that was the only bonus... We were travelling pretty light. Think fully loaded with water, fuel, spare layers, my pack wouldn't be anything more than 7 kg!
@TheRandomRunner enough while running in those conditions mate. Your an inspirational chap 👍🏼
this is just epic! such an incredible achivment and SO inspiring. huge well done honestly
Thank you so much! I really did love the race, def one I'll be back for at some point!
I live in milton of campsie and was looking to do the same loop as you have done am trying to work out what path you take to come off at the campsies from cort ma law to the farm road
Yeah it's a bit of a hard path to find initially, just pretty much keeping heading south from the top. There's a small branch off from near the top but then turns into a decent path the further u go down! Good luck!
@@TheRandomRunner thanks for the reply mate i mostly run on the road but got a pair of trail shoes so looking to run some trails . 👍🏻
Currently watching. I miss scotland
Yeah it was great exploring all these parts that I'd never been to before... Stunning!
@TheRandomRunner scotlands the most beautiful place on earth in my opinion. Been so many times. Keep Safe 🤜🏽
So many running videos on here telling us how to run faster, it drives me nuts. I love that your films are about the joy of running and all the amazing places running can take us. I'm a new subscriber and have loads of your previous runs to watch which I'm really looking forward to and of course, it helps that most of them are in Scotland (I'm a Scot currently stuck in Englandshire).
Thanks Chris! Glad to hear you're enjoying the videos. Plenty more trails in Scotland that I've yet to do so watch this space. Albeit my next one is from a bit further afield... The Italian Alps!
Well done another amazing adventure well done , keep up the great videos
Thanks Thomas! Working on the video of my latest adventure at the mo... The Tor des Geants!
Smashed that mate 💪🏻
@@Barrieq yeah, really loved that event!! 👌
Brilliant video 💪🏼 what vest was you using? Need to upgrade mine to something more substantial for distance. 👍🏼
Thank you! I've been using this same pack for the last few years now... Montane gecko 12L. Really versatile! 👍
@TheRandomRunner thank you for the info, I've got an inov8 one and am looking for upgrade. Doing arc of atrition January only 25 but may doing snowdonia 55k so need a better vest. Your videos are excellent fair play to you for embracing the pain of endurance on that level
Great video as always Paul. Well done 👏
Cheers man! 👍
Fantastic to be out and about in the great outdoors. Plenty of fresh air on that one! Great effort!
It's brilliant! Love the whole experience of running at sunset, through the night and into sunrise!
Your channel is great mate - only discovered today - I am from Hawes (Yorkshire Dales) but have lived abroad since 1998 as I got married in Vietnam. You have brightened up my day mate as I'm running alone here as the men only drink, smoke and sing kareko - cheers from Vietnam :)
Aw cheers man, glad you like the videos! Ashame not much of a running scene over there, makes a difference getting out there with similar minded people!!
@@TheRandomRunner I contemplated when i come back for a holiday to run the whole length of the UK - is that something you have contemplated ? i would do it multi-stage - it would be probably cost a lot as I would pay someone to take care of bags each day from point A to B...
Funny I was just reading about a company doing this over 17 days, running roughly 50 miles a day! Although they do it as a road run www.ultrarunningltd.co.uk/race/jogle/ There's also Ratrace who do the Run Britannia, proper trails most of the way but expensive. Or a lot of organisation and do it yourself!!
Absolutely amazing. I love the WHW and this would be incredible to do, but that takes a special sort of person and grit and that I do not have lol. Well done!!!
Thank you and yes, it does take a fair amount of determination! And problem with doing it in one go like that is you miss alot of the stunning scenery by running through the night.
Great video. Which running vest are you using?
Thank you! It's the Montane gecko 12L. So versatile, same pack I've used for many different events over the last few years!
Wow so impressive!! Massive congrats, you’re positivity is contagious!!
Well thank you so much, that is lovely to hear! 😊
What a superb video. Well done and such a beautiful country. I'm doing my first marathon next month and that is inspirational. Seanie From Ireland
Thank you!! It was great running through parts of Scotland I'd never been before! All the best with the marathon! 👌
What baffles me most about these endurance challenges is they’re seemingly impossible on their own. To FILM it and remain coherent and sane blows my absolute mind. You’re a monster of a man and a monster of a filmmaker. Loved it!
Haha, thank you!! Tbh it's prob the filming that helps keep me sane and coherent! Just means I gotta keep making the videos!!
Well done with your first 100 and well done with the video, great job capturing the race and your experience 👏 Nice to see a couple of familiar faces along the way 😀
Thank you!! Yeah it's one of those races that it would be surprising if you didn't see someone you know!!
New to your channel, mate, absolutely loving your adventures. It's even reignited my running plans 😅
Ah good stuff... Glad to hear it! 👍
Love the set up😅👍
😂 Yeah, I literally just need to go and buy myself a phone holder stand thing!!
Just get some good old gaffer tape 🤣
Awesome effort! Thanks, helps a lot!
Thank you!! 👌
Congratulations Paul. Really enjoyed watching that from Singapore. Super impressive, especially your positive attitude throughout. Look forward to watching more. All the best 👍
Thanks so much for your comment, it's kinda funny to think of my videos being watched all the way over there!! Just started on the next one.... The Tor des Geants!
Hey, what are your thoughts on those Salomon poles after a while ? I’m like you finally after years deciding to use some but I hesitate between those ones and the Black Diamond ones which seems a bit faster to assemble
Hey there! Tbh I love the Salomon poles. They're as easy to put up/take down as any I've seen. I really like the handle grip, lends itself to many different grips depending if using the poles for descending /ascending/flat. I wouldn't be without them now for any ultra with a substantial climbs!
Thanks Paul. Another great inspirational video. 😎You are keeping me motivated to keep training towards my first ultra in February 2025. 😈 Cheers. Dave. 😁
Ah cheers man!! Very much appreciated!! Keep up the good work, and all the best for Feb. Out of interest what ultra are you doing?
@@TheRandomRunner Hi Paul. I started 6 weeks ago and could only run 5k in 30 mins. I am just doing the Runna app 27 wk training from 5k to 50k and doing my own 50k in February at the end of my program. I will hopefully be doing the Devil o the highlands in April as my first official ultra race. All going well. Loving all your videos. 👍😎
Ah good stuff!! Tbh some of my most enjoyable ultras are when I've just headed off myself. A good one for that is the route of the run the blades. Although not much in the way of convenience along the way so have to carry a bit extra stuff!
@@TheRandomRunner Cheers Paul. I will have a look at that one in the future. 👍Keep up the videos. Your content is great and very motivating. 😎All the best for your next adventures. Dave. 😈
I love these scenic runs! What a joy to have safe & functional public transport.
It's a really lovely and varied route this one! And indeed, makes a run like this so much more straight forward when you have such easy transport links!
I can imagine doing one of these days in isolation, but to get up after low quality tent sleep and face the slush and cold for another 7 days is unthinkable! Well done to all who had the courage to even start! Great video.
Thank you! Yeah the day after day does start wearing you down!! But it's nice to break such a big route down into manageable chunks! They do also do an easier option where you just run a section of each day!
Loved that little travelogue with a wee run thrown in - thanks for taking us along!
Thanks Mike, glad you enjoyed it!
I've never run and Ultra. I've never run a Marathon. I've done a couple of Half Marathons but I didn't like them. BUT the lure of an Ultra is powerful. I'm tempted. I *might* give a short one a try. I like the idea of maybe a 50km Ultra. It's the terrain and the pace and the scenery that's attractive. Oh hang on! I have done the the Yorkshire Three Peaks (not an Ultra I know) in 6hrs 30mins. Thanks for the video - Thanks for the inspo!
Yeah there's something about ultras/trail running that has a completely different feel about it than a road run! Can more often feel like just a big day out!!
What trainers did you wear for the 100
I wore the Salomon Genesis S-lab... My go to shoe for the last year now. Just so versatile!
1:58 is my literal nightmare.
😂 I thought our way of deciding who would finish by playing rock paper scissors was quite fun!!
Well done mate, from Sydney Australia-amazing run, great achievement, fantastic video. Thanks very much
Thanks so much for your comment! For me it was a bucket list race. Being Scottish and having completed the route so many times, I was determined to finish it within the day!!
Well done! I was in the area that very weekend. Managed to catch COVID!!😭
Ah that's a bugger! Thankfully avoided that for the race!!
Looks like a fantastic event. Nice coverage. Amazing result!
It's a superb event, so well organised!
Currently devouring all your content. Loving it. Keep going
Awesome, thank you! Just about to start on the latest video.... The Tor des Geants!!
Thanks for all the work you put into these videos, they’re great!
Glad you like them! It's great to share them but also to have as my own record of the events!
