    It's so refreshing listening to someone who exists outside of the traditional 9 to 5 life. It's like realizing there's a whole other world out there, full of life and vitality. This gives me hope for when we fully enter the Post-Labor Economy. The traditional structures will (potentially) give way to lifestyles that are more relaxed and in tune with nature.😊

    Claire, this was an excellent take. Producing more is important, but it is hard. Now, that doesn't mean it isn't worth it. Right now I'm working on an audiobook on determination. I'm glad you made this video, because there are definitely days, where i just want to do nothing. But I know, once I'm done, I'll have something to look back on.

    There is a term for people who say things like that. We call them JACKASSES. And I think it is hilarious they would even say that in today's economy. If you even have a job...a gig job...whatever...you are blessed. If you have ANY source of income, that is literally all that matters. And on top of that, we are approaching the POST-LABOR economy, which means the majority of humans will be without jobs soon. Only people like you, the creatives, will be functioning in the upcoming UBI dystopian hellscape. It's a twisted irony that that jackass will soon come to appreciate. That was an EPIC rant by the way.✊

    I have been off tiktok since Nov 2022. I truly believe it caused A LOT of the dystopian wild ah shi we have seen and been thru since 2020! Its a double edge sword, some stuff I saw during 2020-2021 in tiktok was amazing freaking info & community and niche shit and convos that people on a global scale otherwise would never know or be exposed to and be able to connect, but then the other hand is just all the crazy ass shit that has happened. Tbh all socials since 2020 have just become INSANE. I will say youtube has remained somewhat neutral since 2006, and I will always love youtube, pinterest and OG (myspace,fb,tumblr, twitter) the most. Everything shifted in 2016. I will never go back to tiktok though. I also think it accelerates people who are predisposed to psychosis and schizophrenia , well social media in general in the last 4 years. Oh, and Reddit is underrated social media app imo 😂

Probably yes, as I keep getting recommended that I follow people from work even though I've never posted online where I work and I am not friends online with any of them.

  • @genx7006
    @genx7006 Месяц назад

    You mentioned cursing and sex scenes. I've really been thinking about these elements as a writer. Obviously, you know I am no prude. But I have this inclination to compartmentalize things. For example, if you watch 80s or 90s movies, there's always that one scene they cram in there, which makes no sense. The obligatory nudity or sex scene. It was always so jarring. I hated that. Not that I hated the nudity 😅 but that they slapped it stupidly in a good film. The same thing with cursing. Sometimes it feels so forced. Now, if you are writing something trashy, it makes sense to include these elements. But I have a real problem when 2 unrelated frameworks cross paths. Like if you are writing for a general audience, you wouldn't expect raunchiness in it. How do you feel about blending in trashy elements with a standard novel?

    • @claireholliday6721
      @claireholliday6721 Месяц назад

      You’ve perfectly explained my own feelings on the matter. It’s smashing together two different ‘modes’ of reading. When I read fanfiction, I want minimal world-building or plot - in fact get annoyed and start skimming when there’s too much of that stuff. I’m here for my favs to be in ridiculous/scandalous situations that leads to them making out, and by golly I don’t want anything less than that! Once I crack open a real book, I want the writing/world-building/plot to be taken seriously. Sexuality can inform characters and plot, but too much attention on it feels - gross? Excessive? Like this book was an elaborate excuse for the author to explore their own pervy ideas that I got tricked into being subjected with? Now there are books that take their time, sometimes even multiple books, to work up to a sex scene that changes the characters/plot moving forward. That’s a valid way of exploring the subject and feels very human. Now, if we then go from having little-to-no sex scenes, to sex scenes every other chapter, I’m going to lose interest in that story real quick. That being said, one of my biggest criticism with Brandon Sanderson is the complete lack of sexuality in his ‘adult’ fantasy - makes his characters feel completely sterilized. Or like when Disney bough Star Wars, which was never an explicit property by any stretch, but there were women in metal bikinis, a little sexy dancing for jabba the hutt, and anakin’s refusal to be a chastised monk is quite literally the catalyst for the rest of the franchise.

    • @genx7006
      @genx7006 Месяц назад

      @@claireholliday6721 Your comments about Star Wars really made me ponder the original trilogy. Looking back, I always saw Leia in bikini and the dancing Oola as rather benign. But I don't think ROTJ would lose anything if these items were omitted. As a kid watching these films, I saw Han, Luke, and Leia more as a group of friends, rather than a steamy love triangle (Luke's revelation of Leia coming later of course). As a kid you don't want to see kissing in your space adventures (Eww, gross!). Do I think Star Wars should be sterilized? It's an interesting question. For example, in the Ahsoka series, I wanted to see where they were traveling to (that was the big mystery), so I was wrapped up in the story. I really didn't care if Ahsoka or some side character "got it on" with another character. It just isn't important. I watch Star Wars for story and space battles. That sounds juvenile, doesn't it? So yeah, I kinda do want it sterilized? I wasn't keen on the Kylo/Rey relationship (gasp, WHAT?!?) but rather, I wanted Rey to be a clone of Luke's hand. That would have been so interesting. It goes back to story and mystery for me. Now, if I wanted to see some space hunk and space chick "getting it on", I would probably watch the 1980s Flash Gordon movie. Wowie wow. Now that is what I am talking about. I need to stop. LOL

    First of all, great video. This is what drew me to your channel in the first place. You always came across as a seasoned professional of the writing trade, even though you have yet to officially publish. It's not "faking it till you make it", but rather staying honest to the craft. Being a writer (a real writer with ideas always brewing) is a lifelong journey and not just a mini cash grab on Amazon (if you are so lucky). We live the writer's life. It's part of our very being, and that is cool, IMO. 😊 I took a peek at your Katara fan fic and read the first several paragraphs. So you got skillz, huh? 😅 I knew you did. Anyways, I will read through its entirety sometime this weekend. I love checking out other aspiring writer's stuff. I know you are familiar with some of my work, lol. Also, I'd love to hear more about your move to LA, and your Hollywood experiences. It sounds super interesting, especially the behind the scenes stuff. Write on! ✍️

There’s a fun Kylo x Rey one I wrote a few chapters for too that I can’t seem to find :’( I might make a video about it anyway, I remember my general plot outline, maybe that’s enough?

    Excellent response video! You got me thinking about the tell-tale signs of a self-published book. One thing I have noticed (and this goes back to the self-publishing of the early 2000s) is that the editing can be TRASH. Just atrocious. Newbie authors don't know the first thing about grammar or making revisions to their work. It really shows. And there is a lot of outright THEFT of other's materials, especially with items like adult coloring books. It's a sad state of affairs, because people are just out for the cash. It's cool that you are a traditionalist as far as publishing goes. I have an idea I have been working on for this year which I plan to traditionally publish...but through a "backdoor" methodology. I will let you know more if it pans out, but I am hopeful something will come of it. I too would like things published properly, and not some haphazard crap you throw in a PDF. As far as AI goes, I would consider using AI to generate some images for the cover or internals of my book, but I would definitely say "these images were AI generated".

    • @claireholliday6721
      @claireholliday6721 2 месяца назад

      There are genuinely really well-done self-published works - not just quality content, but competent grammar/formatting too. But the sheer volume of work with minimal effort and BLATANT mistakes is staggering!!! YES the adult coloring books, those are an EPIDEMIC!!!! I love when they say they’re AI generated too - so you put minimal effort into stollen images, reduced it down to line-work and thought no one would notice? Interested to learn more about your own publishing project and how that works out for you! Very mysteeeeeerious 🧐

    I'm afraid I couldn't get past the third chapter and completely gave up reading the first book. The writing style was so unengaging for me. At first, I had a knee-jerk reaction thinking the 2nd person perspective was ultimately what was throwing me off, yet I don't think that's it on further reflection. I'm at least used to 2nd person POV from role-playing games and I was getting reasonably used to it reading the book. There was something deeper and more off-putting in general about the writing style although I lack any knowledge of creative writing to pinpoint it well. I think one possible reason is that the text seemed to rely heavily on passive voice over active voice. That might make sense given the personified style of narration. After all, we don't normally say, "The moon's reflection shimmers over the waters." We instead say, "There is a reflection of the moon over the waters. It seems to be shimmering." Yet the latter, more passive style comes off as being so much more like an infodump in nature. I mostly felt like I was reading the lengthiest infodumps (albeit written in a very dramatic and rhetorical style) despite the book being written in present tense (which I assume lends itself normally to more action than exposition). I also recall a lot of use of "then" in the sense of, "This happens. Then this is happening, and now this is happening". That also tends to have the effect of making me feel like I'm reading exposition even when actions are being described as they occur, since it makes them read like a list. I'm sure I'm doing a horrible job of pinpointing precisely why, yet the prose was so off-putting to me.

    • @claireholliday6721
      @claireholliday6721 3 месяца назад

      No, you competently pinpointed one of the issues with the writing! I know what you mean with the extensive info-dumping, I wish I remembered that for the review, though frankly you said it better. But I was intrigued enough with the world building/mystery of it all that I continued + information was revealed so fast I think that helped me stay engaged despite the passive voice. There's a fight scene near the last third that uses a lot of "and then 'blank,' and then 'blank,'" like you also noticed, and it really took me out of the scene.

      @@claireholliday6721 Cheers! I'm very picky about writing style in ways I haven't been able to narrow down, and have even started to take some introductory writing lessons merely to better understand my preferences (and with no aspirations to become a writer). I'm so picky about it that the writing style of a fiction seems to supersede the actual story in terms of engaging me. One of my favorite books, for example, is _The Mezzanine_ which has about the dullest story imaginable: an office worker takes a lunch break and buys a pair of shoelaces. Yet Nicholson Baker's writing reads so effortlessly to my eyes. Bizarrely, I often find longer sentences and words easier and smoother to read and comprehend. I'm starting to think, after some introduction to poetic meter, that it might have something to do with rhythm. For example, "The silver spoon was old," seems a bit more harsh in flow than, "The silvery spoon was tarnished and bent." Even disregarding the evocative differences, I have an easier time reading the latter. I'm still not entirely sure as to why. I think these longer and flowy sentences also tend to create a heightened sense of suspense for me with a softer cadence, urging me to read the next sentence. The shorter ones appear to have a stronger cadence and finality to them. "The silver spoon was old. The end. [Time for me to stop reading.]" Whereas with the longer one, I want to keep going: "The silvery spoon was tarnished and bent. While its specks of luster hinted of a past when it was once loved, now it lay old and bare and long forgotten." It's getting a bit flowery (and my horrible attempt at writing; real authors are so superior), yet I find a little bit of floweriness in prose enjoyable.

      @@claireholliday6721Actually I'm starting to wonder what function "then" serves in present tense writing. From the first book: "He takes all that [...] He holds it. He is not alone. [...] Then he breaks it." What exactly is "then" doing there? It seems a bit confusing and jarring just in terms of how time is elapsing. I'm wondering if the author merely inserted it to break the pattern of starting so many sentences with "He".

    So, the last line of the book intrigued me. The bit about the moon. Immediately, I thought about The Outpost TV series (the moon in that series was devastated and contained mysteries connected to the planet it orbited). But then I researched further. Who is the author of this book series? She's a sci-fi writer? Let me check out the sequel book in the trilogy. (I was really just interested in the moon reference.) Well, here's what I discovered. She must have watched a lot of Doctor Who. Her sequel book is called The Obelisk Gate and there is a race of beings called the Orogene. Hmm...🤔 sounds a lot like the Doctor Who episode The Stones of Blood where there are walking stone obelisks called Ogri from the planet Ogros. Coincidence? You read the book Claire, you tell me.😂

    Hey Claire, I've been wondering about the state of writing. 🤔 ✍️ As the generations continue to age, and technology progresses, will there actually be more opportunities for serious writers? Here's my case. We all know that AI can spit out a book in 3 seconds based on limited prompts. But this is hardly the work of a serious writer. It reeks of plagiarism since technically, the output is not one's own. In addition to AI dumbing down the market, you have the news that the younger generations do not know how to read, write, or synthesize information. While this is deeply disturbing at the societal level, perhaps it opens up more spots for true writers? I'm picturing this wasteland of poor and clumsy writing in the near future. So wouldn't that mean the real writers stand out more? It's almost like things need to get abysmally bad in order for them to get better. Also, there is so much politics in writing now, I think many are tiring of it. We just want good stories. Part of me has this apocalyptic view of the future of writing, even as a field to make any sort of money. But at the same time, I wonder what opportunities may arise for those genuinely invested in the craft.

When I read the 2nd person essay I kinda liked it because it was so different. But the professor told us to "never, ever write in 2nd person". It was considered too unorthodox.

I'd like to think I'm open to being in a relationship, but the men available in my area would be more trouble than they're worth. And cost of living here is BONKERS, so it would be great to have a partner to split bills with. But... the juice is not worth the squeeze. I'd rather be old and alone and doing my own thing, without something thinking they get to dictate what I do because we signed a piece of paper.

    Dune and Dune 2 were both beautiful and fantastic. Movies of a scale and epicness that they really don’t make anymore. And I agree, I prefer the films to the book. The Eras Tour is a fantastic concert. I am a swifty, and saw it in theaters and it was a PARTY. 300 people singing and dancing. Godzilla minus one was really good too. And incredible how good it looks, considering he small budget. And finally someone that agrees that Everything, Everywhere at once was not enjoyable. Napoleon was a trash fire. Ridley Scott is very hit and miss. Why make a historic film that is so factually wrong, it really bugs me. Hollywood has a history of this. I am honestly surprised he didn’t put some Muricans in there to save the day. Barbie as a cultural event was incredibly wholesome. Wasn’t a huge fan of the film, but then again I don’t think it was aimed at me. But at least it was more entertaining than Oppenheimer, that I fell asleep to 😂 God I missed your videos. I have so many comments about the movies you mentioned. But I want to address Agora. That type of movie is my jam as well. Regarding similar movies depicting that era...well, you need to watch Alexander the Great. The 3 or 4 hour director's cut. It's just so amazing what Alexander accomplished at the time. He was literally conquering and uniting the known world. Had it remained more or less unified, instead of collapsing afterwards with his 4 generals, the world would have been very different. You need to watch Cleopatra. The one with Elizabeth Taylor. The power she wielded. And the tragedy at the end. Omg. Loved it. Next, you need to seek out the History Channel's documentaries on The Barbarians. There's like 8 episodes covering Huns, Vandals, Saxons, Vikings, etc. You name it, they have the barbarian you are looking for. Not only are these documentaries action-packed, they explain so much about how Europe was formed. This is essential viewing. Also, they did an excellent documentary on The Black Death. This had tremendous ramifications on humanity's development. Oh, and women are very well represented in these shows. From the Byzantine Theodora to kick ass women warriors fighting Romans (also see the series Rome:Rise and Fall of an Empire). I know what kind of juicy data you are after Claire. It's that "what if" type history...about Paganism and Druids...and "witches"...and why it was all subsumed by the Christian world. It's in the ones I mentioned. I'll try to think of more. 😉
