    Hello- I am new to y'all's channel. I am from Oklahoma. I just finished my last job as a travel nurse in Winslow Az but I stayed in Holbrook at an RV park. I applaud the effort. Grapes produce on the canes that come off the cordons. There is main trunk, 4 to 6 cordons off of those that get cut back at 5 to 6 feet, and then the fruiting canes. Each year you pruning back to almost the cordon. So anything that grows is off last years growth. There are some great low cost books on the subject. The best fruit comes from the canes that are within 6 feet of the main trunk growing off the cordons. It is hard to destroy a grape vine. Just you can not get a good harvest for a year because of a mistake. Trust me it took a few serious mistakes with grapes to figure out I needed to read a few books

    • @suntimefarm
      @suntimefarm 3 месяца назад

      I understand how to prune manicured grapes… but this is something I haven’t had the chance to try. We still got grapes off these and I still would like to this year. These were planted in the early 80s and while some of them I took back more than others, and I do plan to slowly train them, just not worth not have any grapes this year in my opinion.

      Depending where you are you can still do this! My neighbors have a vineyard and are still pruning. I’ll do another update when we start getting leaves and show you the next secondary prune I will be doing. I’d love to help you get grapes again! If you have some dry days, at least 3-4 days go out and get all the dead stuff out.

    You know the condition of your soil better than anyone else. If you feel that tilling is the right thing to do, then you are correct. You certainly made the chickens happy! Picking up all those rocks will definitely be a time consuming project. Glad you felt comfortable swimming in the river even if it was cold. I would love to have had a slice of your fresh-baked bread. BTW--Retro running (running backwards) actually strengthens the knee joints.

      Yes we do, but once the ashes turn white they loose a lot of the nutrients, but it’s the easiest way for us to dispose of them 😊 The best is the black stuff! So when we are burning outside we try to remember to water it down before it all turns white.

    I hope your compost decomposes into nutrient-dense soil. I've been reading about the dam removal projects on the Klamath River. Some people call it an ecological disaster; others call it an innovative step to resorting the health of the river. I don't know enough about the situation to have an educated opinion. I do hope that your section of the river clears up soon enough for your family to enjoy it when warm weather arrives.

      @suntimefarm 5 месяцев назад

      Yes, it’s been a debate for years… In my opinion, the ecological disaster started a century ago when we started damming this river… But basically what happened was the power company that owned these dams didn’t want to pay for the repairs they needed to keep up with new codes so they sold the dams to the state. The tribes around here have been working really hard to preserve the salmon, and the farms up river really dont want to loose their irrigation and man made lake front property so that’s why there’s some debate. Either way the dams had to come down. It will take some time to make it look pretty again and clear out all the sediment and restore the rivers edges after being under a lake. We will probably swim in it any way 🤣

    What kinda stuff are you planning on growing?

    • @suntimefarm
      @suntimefarm 5 месяцев назад

      A little bit of everything we can!! Depends on how many beds we can get together lol Some things on the top of the list are peppers, tomatoes, pumpkins and melons.

      Homegrown tomatoes are 1000% better tasting (and more nutrient dense) than store bought tomatoes.

    Clearing the undergrowth made an impressive difference in the looks of the forest. The madrone tree was interesting. Just two days ago, I listened to an audiobook book that mentioned a madrone tree. I had never seen one, since they don't grow in my area. I enjoyed seeing yours. I know the chickens will enjoy their new home.

      Yes! It always amazes us too at how open the forest feels after clearing out the under brush! We will have to share more madrone trees for you! They are so beautiful! I hope the chickens dont mind getting locked up but they’ve been hanging on our porch and we’re not big fans of the little piles they leave 😜🤣 Thanks for hanging on the farm!

    I'm sorry you had problems with your water system. I know that was very frustrating. You did a great job restoring and actually improving your system.

    Wow, thanks for sharing all of this. A couple questions, if you don't mind? As this is surface water, do you have to do any water quality testing like TC/FC? Is the process of filling your tank automated at all (e.g. water level hi and low switches tied to solenoid actuated inlet valve)? You guys are such an inspiration and so right about things we take for granted. ❤❤

    • @suntimefarm
      @suntimefarm 6 месяцев назад

      No, the tank is manually filled, we have an alarm to turn it on and off every couple days so we don’t forget about it lol. Once the water is in the tank, it has an electric pump that goes through a series of filters before coming into the house. When we do not have power we do not have filtered water so we save water on hand for drinking. We’re learning a lot out here! So glad you’re following along 💚

      Lol it’s on the list already 🤣 We’ll get there one day lol No, we just call it a little shovel, but maybe we should adopt his name. We are so thankful to have running water again! We definitely don’t take it for granted any more!
