Being 'part of a clan' is meaningless. Clann comes from the Irish word for children, clann, that's it. Whatever your name is automatically makes you a member of that clan.

I'm a member of the Clan Gunn Society of North America and have been for many years now. I pay the annual membership dues, check in at the Clan Gunn tent to let them know I'm there and to get whatever clan banner or item that has the clan crest on it to participate in the parade of clans at Central NY Scottish Games and the calling of the clans at the Niagara Celtic Heritage Festival. I have even helped the clan society commissioner with packing and loading his vehicle after the event was over.

After joining two clan societies and the local Scottish society not a lot. Pay dues go to the highland games or do some genelogy and the clan pick nic. Some of the people are hard to be connected with while a few are good folks. 🤔

I have 2 connections that are a bit ambiguous. Mitchell has a sept that’s tied to Innes, but there doesn’t seem to be a clan otherwise for them + Lord of Lions lists them as armiguous. I’m also directly tied to McConnell. Most people say they are McDonald with alternate spelling, but Peter McDonald Tartan expert pointed out there was a clan Conal that they might descend from as well, and even posted picture of their tartan. They aren’t on list of clans currently.

  • @TheJTMcDaniel

This question has been studied, and "tradition" notwithstanding, the majority of men who wear kilts wear something under them. For one thing, it's more comfortable, particularly since shirts are a lot shorter than they used to be and wool can chafe. If it's a hire kilt, they're going to tell you to wear underwear and if you don't and it's obvious when it's returned, you may just find yourself with a cleaning surcharge added to compensate for having to handle the nasty thing.

Thanks for these videos. Personally, I vote for just black and white (plaid) almost like the freemason's floors. It represents ignorance alongside knowledge and duality and all that. I also like that it's pure and not all colorful like the family's colors, kind of like an anti tatran that represents no family but insted a trade. You would be able to stand out in a crowd of people wearing colorful kilts so it would work as an identifier for kiltmakers. To quote the freemason's - The white tiles symbolize light, goodness, purity and knowledge. - The black tiles symbolize darkness, ignorance, evil and the unknown. And I personally think that the plaid would make it like a ying yang type situation with elements of evil in good people and elements of good in evil people. I think being a seamstress is fun because I get to cut and destroy stuff with huge sissors but also I get to create and stich together random trash that has significant impact on peoples ability to express themselves and their culture.

I concur that it really depends on what colors a person wears, and also if they want subdued versus bright. Grey Granite and Black Isle likely will work with a large variety, by virtue of their colors. For more colors but subdued. I tend to agree with Isle of Skye, Nordic Heritage, and Kilts & Culture. The most versatile kilt I own for bright colors is Innes Red Modern. Despite it being in modern color palette, there are so many colors in it that almost any shirt and hose will work with it.

  • @ChillinVillian10

I tend towards the darker earth tones in my wardrobe. I have County Cork, Urquhart Broad Red Modern, and I just ordered the Appalachian Folklore tartans, greens and generally dark tartans. I like my Warrior tartan, purple and black, too, which I used in Highland competitions. But again it is relatively a dark tartan and goes with a lot of different shirts. Great discussion.

I know so little of Scottish history I can't put names to any of the three elements of my answer. I'd like to have the clan chiefs from one of today's large and active clans, and his fellow chief from a historic peak of that clan, at least two hundred years ago. I'd love to just sit and watch as they caught up with each other. Oh a sample of whisky from both eras and their areas. to lubricate the conversation.

I think fashion would’ve done what it always does. Was most popular and viewed as the fashion of the elite and influential would have grown and dominated. It would’ve mingled with Highland fashion but it would’ve taken over eventually. Clearances would still have happened Highland and Loveland. Plan chiefs would’ve gotten rid of tenants in favor of literal cash cows and sheep.
