If you're in a situation where people *might* see what's under your kilt, then I highly recommend wearing *something* under it. (I regularly wear my kilt while out dancing. If I spin, it flare out ... a lot.) My preference is dark briefs, because they blend in with the shadows. Nobody ever sees them ... but nobody ever sees anything else under the kilt.
If I'm in a situation where modesty isn't an issue, then undergarments are optional.

This question has been studied, and "tradition" notwithstanding, the majority of men who wear kilts wear something under them. For one thing, it's more comfortable, particularly since shirts are a lot shorter than they used to be and wool can chafe. If it's a hire kilt, they're going to tell you to wear underwear and if you don't and it's obvious when it's returned, you may just find yourself with a cleaning surcharge added to compensate for having to handle the nasty thing.

All right, here’s my opinion. If you’re not wearing anything, which often I don’t. Are use an anti-chief that looks just like deodorant. Say no to the powder. I believe it’s Armen Hammer I would have to pull it out. But there are times when underwear is just appropriate. Anytime you’re around were children will be, wear underwear. If it’s really hot, I suggest wearing underwear. Otherwise you may end up with a puddle underneath of you. And that does not look good. As far as underwear I always wear a boxer briefs, cotton.
And a slight edit to piggyback off of Eric. Black exactly. Something that will not just stand out.
