Canyon Creek, WA, Nov. 3, 2024, 700 cfs, L Scorch--Brooks Foster kayaking
November got off to a fantastic start in 2024, with a generous rain storm that brought Canyon Creek into a nicely padded medium flow on Nov. 3, 2024. It was about 700 cfs and dropping slowly. We had a huge group so I'll forego the usually name callouts. You know who you are.
I'm so impressed with the skill level of these paddlers, some of whom have only been kayaking for a few years.

We had a large group for this Fall lap on the Orletta section of the White Salmon River in SW Washington. The sun was out, the air was warm, and the water was low. Quite a different experience from high water runs in the winter. Having three first timers in the group provided some excitement, but overall it was like a relaxing, playful visit with an old friend. A highlight of the trip was watch...

Sept. 1, 2024. 1.5' at Husum. Pyranha Ripper 2L. I have had a lot of fun over the years leading other paddlers on their personal first descents. This was Henry Sollitt's first run on the Orletta section of the White Salmon River, and this video captures some of our conversations along the way, discussing lines and talking smack. Thanks to Scott Woodhouse and Stephen Cameron for joining me. I forgot to turn my camera on for the BZ seal launch and Husum, but otherwise this video is pretty complete.

We were lucky to have a second weekend in a row with the Deschutes at Benham at 1750 cfs or more which is the highest it has been in July since 2020 so I packed up my trusty Scorch X and Prijon Release and hit the road Saturday morning, driving out from Portland in time for a 2:30 pm putin at Dillon Falls. Canyon Creek seems like a perfect run for a half slice. The drops are big, but pretty easy once you know them, and there is a lengthy warmup section. Also I've done it 50-100 times and it seems like a good way to spice it up. But which half slice? 180-85, 5'11". I love the L Scorch. It has served me well, and you can see how it performs on many other videos on my channel. The M Scorch felt too small, and the X is awesome but feels a bit narrow and unstable compared to the L. The only thing I don't really like about the L is its heavy and unbalanced weight when carrying. I have a ton of foam padding around the knees in the L because its knee box is so cavernous. I use a single seat shim and have the seat moved back towards the stern. That makes it feel more responsive but also a bit more grabby so ymmv. It's an extremely capable and high performance creek boat. Fast, edgy, tons of rocker, boofs great, good volume for smashing big features, good outfitting (once customized). I love it.

      @ thanks for responding/feedback. I’ve been in a 9R II large for 5yrs or so and have been eyeing up the scorch or scorch X too). I’m 6’1, 195 so I think it’s sized appropriately for me. I’ll have to demo one. I like moving fast and slalom type paddling/river running in WV/western MD. I like the narrower hulls pyranha makes so the X is also intriguing. -Cheers

    • @bfosterkayaking
      @bfosterkayaking 6 месяцев назад

      I’m about 180-185 pounds without gear. At my weight the L is fast, easy to turn, and runs lines really well. It’s easy to squirt to about 45 degrees. Harder to get it above that. I haven’t back entered it, but my hips do go under the current quite a bit, as is the nature of a half slice. I have my seat back and wish I could put it back further at least to see how it handles. It’s a really fun boat. I was surprised by how progressive the rocker is since that isn’t the modern trend, but activating it helps it squirt and the stern has a long planing surface that feels great at speed. The Ripper 2 M squirted incredibly but didn’t run lines well for my weight. The L Rewind is too big. The Ripper 2L hits a nice sweet spot for my size.

    Interesting you compare the Scorch, Brooks. I'm 6'2, 200lbs, but broad build. I'm actually considering replacing my Scorch L with a Puffy for next season because I prefer the fit so much. Haven't to try them on the water yet, but from everything I read, the Puffy has a lot better initial stability than the Scorch with just as good secondary. Hoping my weight will tame the bobbing a bit.

    • @bfosterkayaking
      @bfosterkayaking 10 месяцев назад

      I think the Puffy is a great option for a guy your size. The Scorch L measures and paddles narrower, which reduces its primary stability compared to a wider hull. The Puffy is a sick boat just a little too wide for my M/L frame. *btw if you want more stability in the L Scorch and haven’t tried it yet, I recommend removing the seat pad. I did that in my Scorch X and it made a big difference. You might also try moving the seat back. That should make the stern perform a little more like that of a Puffy.

    • @brentwade9346
      @brentwade9346 10 месяцев назад

      @@bfosterkayaking I actually built the seat up some - one of the things I hate about the fit of Pyranha's outfitting is the deep bowl at he back of the seat ;-). I didn't get to try the Puffy or normal Steeze, but the OG is one of the most comfortable high volume boats I've been in...just not fast or fun enough. If I was doing a lot of creeking I'd have one, but I'm up north in high volume water. Thanks.
