Nitpicking The Until Dawn Remake
A discussion and Review of the Until Dawn Remake!
Overall, I think that the remake is okay. It’s not great with the music being boring and dull in comparison to the original but, the graphics have some nice changes. Was this remake necessary? No but, with the games massive success I think it was only a matter before we got this remake and/or a sequel which it looks like might be in the works as well. I did love revisit these characters and this story as the original game as it is one of my two top games ever so despite my nit-picky comments, I had so much fun playing the remake.

Avatar The Last Airbender: Why I Love It
Banger video! 🛥 I find Mel interesting because she's more anti-violence than Abby (mostly) but rational enough in the scene with Ellie and Tommy to know they're a threat if left alive. I personally don't think she'd be as willing to kill them both if she were the one to pull the trigger though. Moreover I think Mel also just wants to be happy with Owen, but it's hard to know your partner is more in love with their ex than with you when you're already pregnant with his child. Owen is the one she should really be mad at but she lashes out at Abby because that's easier. I think it also mirrors Dina's frustration and grief with Ellie when she leaves to kill Abby at the end, in the sense that both Mel and Dina just want their partners to let go of the past and move forward, hell they even both give an ultimatum.
I felt like the music was similar to what was done for The Casting of Frank Stone (which I enjoyed). With COFS, the entire storyline is wild and chaotic so the quirky music fits really well. The original Until Dawn soundtrack added so much suspense and tension to the storyline. I wish they kept some of the ominous music but overall, I didn't hate it.
I dont think you mentioned it in the video, but in the later parts of the game was a bit "too dark" for you? I have a thing with night vision but i missed alot of totems and clues because it was really hard to see thing in the darkness. I felt the lighting was better in the original.
The ending makes me uneasy.. like I always want good endings.
as a dbd player i think this game was really terrible. i am yet to personally play until dawn and the quarry, but i've watched and been interested in the games. another bias is that i really don't like multiverse stories since no one can or will ever properly write infinity. i played through the game once and then haven't touched it since. biggest problem is that the story is incredibly boring: cop shoots some guy for no real reason > teens making low budget bad movie > get told off > plan to do it anyway > go buy camera > sneak in to film > get attacked by a ghost > game ends. augustine does nothing except be evil and then die. i do not care at all about frank stone and have no reason to. sam showed up, shoots him, and then he becomes an evil ghost and is the bad guy. no reason or explanation as to why i should care. bonnie and stan just die pointlessly with no way to save them. what's the point of "everyone survived" endings if not everyone can survive. maddie is kind of a baby, which i guess could be grief but regardless she sucks as a protagonist because we don't have any real reason to care about her. dbd lore-wise, i think it's even worse. dbd lore works because it doesn't really explain it. what's the entity? how is it powerful? what's going on? well just forget about it, no one cares, you can play as and against michael myers. dead by daylight lore works best as individual one-shots for every characters' backstory that fans can dream about. none of these characters will be added or be important to dbd, especially since releases are already kinda backed up. additionally, frank stone being super boring kills any interest. i thought he was supposed to be an alternate version of the trapper or something similar? even still, he's kind of a nothing character with no reason to be a killer (no power, nothing unique about him). the ending is AWFUL in that perspective because, why are they becoming survivors going into the trials? this is a worse ending for them as characters than just straight up dying? either kill them or they become trapped in an eternal cycle of death and torture. i'm hoping when i play through untill dawn and the quarry they are not as terrible of an experience
Good point about Chris, and I wouldn't even call it a nitpick; The majority of Josh's scheme entails torturing Chris (more than the people more directly involved), and that would be weird if he was innocent. After all, as best friends, Chris would have had a whole year to clear that up. On the idea that he's being inclusive so Ashley doesn't feel bad, I mean okay, I guess, but I don't know if I'd like someone enough to claim ownership of another person's murder that I had nothing to do with it. That's insane
It was interesting going from Master Assassin's video on this and seeing how different your opinions were - for example he said that he felt the blue tint always being on the screen even during Sam's arrival scene made the game better (it brings forth the feeling of being cold up on the mountain and sets the tone early, which I can get behind). He also said that he didn't like the new intro sequence because it felt generic while the old one felt ominous (I'm so-so on this, I don't play many video games so it feel unique to me). The final point that I found your differing of particular note was O Death, he sounded as furious as a monotone can sound about it's removal (while I personally don't mind the new song it will always have the stigma of being the song that replaced O Death, and also just that O Death speaks to Hannah's story and the new song doesn't (I can't remember it's name lol))
The youtuber i first watched play until dawn really liked Emily and got Ashley to kill Chris (i think its chris). It definitely painted how i see the characters lol 😅
Great video❤ I agree with a lot of your points. It was a huge drawback finding out they couldn't keep the original score and sounds for the remake. The wendigos have always been my favourite part of until dawn! Their original screeches never failed to put me on edge, especially when they would put a distant screech that would ramp up tension in the upcoming scene for a character who hadn't seen them yet. It is such a shame that new players will miss out on that truly defining feature of the wendigos. When I heard about actors returning to film I was so hoping that Matt & Jessica's actors would be there. As i feel like all the original really missed was more time with Matt & Jessica slowly escaping the mines together at the end. I got the platinum trophy for the original ps4 version, and was ready to do it all again with the remake, however graphic changes, a few additional collectibles, and a secret ending for Josh (as much as it is a fan letter ending) just isn't worth it for me. If it is ever on sale or free on ps plus, then I will pick it up☺️
At first I was surprised and a little heartbroken when Joel died, but then I remembered something He old Ellie in the first game. After the escape the office building through the subway Ellie told Joel and Tess you guys are pretty good at this. Joel said It's called luck, and it is going to run out. Joel did prepare her for how how harsh this world is now. Joel knew one day someone would probably come after him. Im glad Tommy had his back. Ellie saved Joels life in Pittsburgh PA. If she wasmt there he would have died. Whether Joel wanted her oround or not he was teacher her everyday how to survive.
Love Ashley, glad they redid that scene. I had my own headcannon for it but it was really hard to defend with the way they framed it. Still hate Emily though, Ive seen that scene with her apologizing, I didnt know it was preorder only. I think my only issue with Sam is just that she is the character with the least amount of depth. She's a badass dont get me wrong but she's kind of a Mary-sue. But as you said I think it's probably because she's the one most likely to have survived.
the reason why im ok with sam being a bigger focus in a sequel is i think she had the second biggest investment in the game. she is the one who has been keeping up with josh checkin in on him. my biggest thing was. josh pranked the three people who had less involvement in the prank that killed his sister
Uh Chris is not more interesting than Sam. And Jessica is far more traumatized than Chris. Sam is the final girl. It makes sense she leads the sequel
🎶 if Sam were to return in a sequel, i would love to see her in more of a mentor role, like the flamethrower guy. Maybe the main cast could be a bunch of new characters who engage with the monsters in new and different ways (and maybe have their own "non-supernatural" threat going on, like Josh was in the first game). Sam could appear at one point and only allude to the events of the original game as something tragic, that way leaving more combinations of endings as potentially canon.
The music changes are like when you’re favorite show came out on DVD and immediately being disappointed because any music changes effect the mood
Small thing about Josh's mental health crisis being mentioned in Hannah's diary, that's also in the original game and has been for years. Most people just don't see it because they don't swipe right.
Just noticed it yesterday when played it again with the boys... My friend isn't aware of the TouchPad think (he's a pc dude) so he just opened the previous page, and I was shocked by it lol!
problem with the music, is that it doesnt feel like an ost from 90s slasher teen movie. The genre supermassive are taking character archetypes from
uff, it went exactly like that for me in my first playthrough :'D tough times
I mean... I've always said it and I'm happily saying it again: I don't think the devs of DBD have it in them to create a whole story like that. And The Casting of Frank Stone is the best example for it. When it comes to character descriptions and fun little backround stories, that's fine, but I don't think writing a whole, consecutive story is fully their thing ^^' Which is fine for DBD in general, it's just a bit sad for this game. Most of this game feels rushed and weirdly implemented
banger video, very underatted !!
I basically agree with everything you mentioned in this review except for the stuff about Sam being a poor choice as a main character for a sequel. Now do I necessarily think this game needs a sequel? Not really lol... In general I think that sequels are never as good as the original and often can feel like pointless cash grabs. But that being said I think if there is a sequel in the works, Sam is honestly the only character it makes sense to focus on for it! She's a well liked character, not overly complex but she has that typical Bad Ass Hollywood Hero vibe going on which is great for a protagonist imo! Plus if they're going the route of having her being traumatised by the events (which was hinted at in one of her interview segments at the end of the game where she insisted she was fine when the interviewer tried to get her to open up, mirroring Josh's own refusal to admit how much his sister's disappearances affected him) I think we could actually get a really intriguing side to her character! Mike or Emily are great characters but they really wouldn't have worked as a protagonist for the potential sequel imo (especially when Sam is so much more intertwined with the Washingtons than any of the other characters, except arguably Chris)... But yeh other than that totally agree with your thoughts, I was really excited when I heard about the remake but it honestly kinda feels like they rushed a lot of the details which is crazy given they've had 9 years to work on it lol...
do you like ANY female character? jesus lmfao
Had all the same feelings
nahhh... sam makes the most sense BECAUSE shes the least traumatized. chris doesnt have a brave bone in his body, same with emily. mike, maybe could take her role in a potential sequel, because he was the only one to be brave enough to INTENTIONALLY seek out the monster and Jess. but because she wasnt there, didnt experiende it, i sense a bit of morbid curiosity in her reading about mountain curses, and wanting to understand what happened. the others are too traumatized, and i hope they never have to face any monsters again lmao. id be willing to bet too that Josh is more likely to be locked up than mike. agree to disagree on a lot of your points. but still an interesting video/perspective ❤
hate that the art style of the game is just gone
👽 Personally I like all of the games in the analogy, but I agree that they feel less polished. My thought is, that they are simply underfunded. Until Dawn was fantastic, but also famously a very expensive prestige project. I think most developers would LOVE to be able to take their time to perfect the story, but an unpolished released game makes money and if you don't have a giant studio funding you, you might just have to release what you have. And if you have some funding they might decide they want certain gameplay, like multiplayer in a story about a single guys delusion. I am suspecting that the collab with DBD was a way to scrounge up some extra cash in this struggling game economy, but then there was a bunch of interference. Generally I am wondering if they could do some sort of patreon setting or other way for us who might not play the games to help fund them, but it keeps seeming like funding problems to me.
There are many candidates for the ''best game ever'' it depends on the person not only the game. when you get older your taste in games also change so i dont think there is a best game ever and it will never exist. games just gonna get replaced with ''better games'' but well thats just my opinion. i had fun with allot of triple a games, in my early days of gaming i thought diablo was the best game ever, now 20 years later i dont think that anymore thats just an example i never got into until dawn cause i didnt have a playstation now i have a ps5 and a pc so i had to check it out, finished my first playtrough today it was awesome
In my opinion the inclusivity of the way Chris talks isn’t really a big deal. Josh already blames himself and Chris could blame himself too. He could be just trying to spare Ashely’s feelings. Maybe he is just saying it like that since the psycho is clearly blaming all of them for it either way.
I just got done watching a playthrough of the original game. I honestly forgot how much I HATED Emily.
18:46 Might be a delusionnal Ashley Defender but she aint lying, The prank was dumb but thats not an excuse for how dumb it was for Hannah to just...Ran into the woods with barely clothes on
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.🎉😊😊😊😊
Really looked forward to your Until Dawn Remake stuff
if they are really working on a sequel i really think strongly that josh will be in it. for one, because he is the fan favorite character but also because of the addition of the josh ending where he survives. plus, the character sam was the closest with was josh. so if the sequel is about sam, i can also see how they bring josh back for her story.
You should marathon Alien movies in preparation for Monday! 😅 They're on most streaming apps
they nerfed ashley :(
🚢
I still hate the totem-turnin-mini-event xD they really could just have left it as it was since there was nothing wrong with the animation of the totems in the first place
Sam was actually a bitch, even in the original version, considering she left Ashley (and Chris) behind in the mine. How long would it take for Ashley to move the sink cover back? She did not even wait for it and left Ashley behind, which could lead Ashley to her death. If she was so heroic, she should set off to look for Mike alone, instead of asking others to come with her. Jessica or Emily acted like a bitch but they did not dragged others to danger or even death. Sam did. In this remake version, Sam entered the room and turned the prank into a humilation to Hanna. It actually aggravated the situation. She might not say anything bitchy but she ignored others safety.
Let me tell you what was the biggest difference on Jessica in the remake that you ignored: The song played on Jessica's phone was replaced. It was the "Hey hey hey" in the original version, which was fantastic and fit the vibe of the game. Now it was changed to some strange song that did not impress me at all.
🙏🏿👊🏿
Wasn't it always clear that Hannah was the wendigo that dragged jess, because the miner wendigos were trapped in the Sanatorium or am i lost now?
If they were all trapped, what would the Stranger have been fighting the night of the prank?
@ninjapancake9 it actually gets explained in the "Events of the past" Clip that you unlock with finding the totems. I would recommend you watch that. It is an Essential piece of lore but players ignore it often.
Where's the nit picking gangy
Is it me or all the characters are annoying like Emma and Jacob or boring like Aby and Ryan? Kaitleen is the only one who's funny and interresting; all the others are awful! If i would play the game, i'll only wants to save her and none of the others. Laura too, she's cool and brave i like her 🙂 The choices are really bad in this game; all the characters have weird faces before a choice. It's more silly than anything else! The ones for actions are not always easy to understand; Run or freezer with Kaitleen for exemple. Run makes her stands up then gets killed by a werewolf and freezer makes her locked herself in one; killing her. Both choices are bad while in Untill dawn; there's always a bad and a good choice for the dialogues or the action.
Was devastated when Joel died because the first game makes us emotionally attached to both characters but none the less tlou2 was still a masterpiece & I actually found myself liking Abby & would love a spinoff with her & Lev
Nice stream!
Honestly, I think the new music is good from an actual artistic standpoint, but its usage in the game really does it dirty. I like both the original ost and the new ost but the original was clearly fit into the scenes so much better. I can't lie though I really love the new main theme kicking in during the remake when Mike breaks the light bulb, that goes hard.
Good stream sorry I couldn’t stay longer since it was 3am
Amazing video honestly you said this so beautifully and explained it so well i love watching these types of videos to see everyone's pov and see how everyone takes in certain events.
