The Most Risky thing in the world is to not have your hands ner rhe keyboard ! The further they are away the more chance of playing falling on the wrong keys. How rubinstein and others do and have done this I will never know. DeLarrocha plays this mny artists do . See Richter in Ravel Miroirs . It adds urgency and very real drama to lift hands high :it is in itself a visual spectacle . Rubinstein does this elsewhere even in chopin and it makes sense where he does it but I would rarely dare and certainy not big chords this far away . I'm astounded every time I see this. How is it that there is no film of Geiseking .Solomon?

Horowitz, in my opinion, was one of the greatest pianists of all time. Some of his recitals were so magnificent that when he was finished the audience would remain silent for a while, and then erupt into a standing ovation! So it's very amusing that his wife is dismissive, and expresses annoyance at his demonstrations!

0:51 Horowitz playing a few bars of the great Art Tatum's arrangement of Tea for Two...So many classical pianists admired Tatum, who played by ear due to extremely limited vision.

@@jenswetter251 Τhat's by no means obvious. Many pianists persist in using bad technique and/or posture, despite suffering pain and inefficiencies. Some don't care, because they still manage to play well, in spite of their bad posture, like Horowitz. Others do it because they think it's the correct way, because that's how they were taught. We can't assume whether or not he feels pain as a result of his posture. People who are under chronic pain, are often adept at hiding it. One thing that is obvious, is that he hits a lot of wrong keys; not just in this video (where there really is a host of wrong notes), but also in his concerts. This may or not be because of his posture. We have no way of knowing that.

There's another one of these german words that are impossible to translate. The word is "verschmitzt", and it fits Vladimir Horowitz perfectly. Even more so, if I had to explain the meaning of "verschmitzt", I'd use a short clip of Vladimir smiling, playing and talking. 5 - 10 seconds should be more than enough to convey the meaning.

Wanda was always like that. She kept complete control. I had the opportunity to witness Horowitz practicing for a concert in Vienna in the "Musikvereinssaal", and she was there, watching closely over him. When I asked about her (at the time, I didn't know who she was), I was told that she was present at every practice session-where-ever, whenever. She literally was at his side all the time.
