OK, enough country. Time to get back to some rock, and my favorite genre, 80's hair metal!

Stevie Wonder: Superstition Drum Cover
Просмотров 6921 час назад
Back to some classic drum parts. You might know that Stevie Wonder actually composed and played the drums on this song. And it's no slouch, an amazing part with some intricate hihat work. The swing really carries the song. And yes, I'm reading music the entire way through! As you can hear, there's really no consistent groove in this song, so I had to read the music, all six pages of it. That's ...
Blackberry Smoke: Up in Smoke Drum Cover

Been diggin some country lately and pulled out this gem from a few years back. Also got to use my 60's Slingerland Bronze snare with I practically stole from a local music shop (I didn't literally steal it, just got it for a really great price. Killer sounding drum!).
Extreme: Get the Funk Out Drum Cover

These guys might have been the victims of unfortunate timing, popping up right at the end of the hair metal genre before grunge took it all down. But I always liked this band and this was a great album.
ZZ Top: La Grange Drum Cover

Not exactly a true cover, this might be the harder way to play it (and it shows at times). I believe in the original recording, Frank Beard plays quarter notes on the hi hat while playing the shuffle pattern on the snare. I played the shuffle pattern on both. At this tempo, it's a bit of a challenge and my shuffle suffered at times, why not make it interesting.
Zach Williams: Less Like Me Drum Cover Remix

This has always been one of my favorites and I'm at a time when I felt it was needed. This was one of the earlier covers I recorded (also about 30 pounds ago!). I've advanced so much in my recording and mixing (and still ways to go) that I wanted to remix this to get a better sound. If you hang around till the end, I give the link for the older mix.

This song is just a banger! So much fun to play and mix. All about reverb and saturation. I really enjoyed this one, hope you do too.

So a few weeks back my wife was meditating and said she had a vision that told her I have to do a drum cover of this song. So, here it is. I guess I just sit around and wait for whatever magic to happen not that I have fulfilled her vision. It was a fun song to play, and a very musical drum part.

After a little summer break, I'm back. My daughter had this song on her boating mix during our vacation. Has a good swung groove so thought it would be fun to cover.
Bruce Springsteen: Born to Run Drum Cover

This song is all about drive energy, and dynamics. Fun song to play. It really moves and there's some pretty fast fills in there as well.
Van Halen: Dance the Night Away Drum Cover

A classic VH tune! I love the way Alex utilizes the kicks and crashes on the upbeats to give the drum part a more swinging, dance-like feel. It's subtle but genius.

Nice stuff man! I love the cymbals can’t go wrong with ziljian also nice song choice sounds like 80s or 90s rock!!
Thanks. Song was from 1987, so I added tons of reverb and compression to get that 80's rock sound. Cymbals are all Zildjian K Darks. Love 'em.
Hi, very nice, how ist the Tuning from the Snare, Bottom 380 ? Top 253 ?. Greetings from Germany, Peter
Hi Peter, I love Germany. Been there several times. I forget the exact tuning, but it’s probably C# on the batter 277 and F# on the snare side 372. That’s my usual starting point for snare tuning then I adjust from there. I typically leave the snare side at 372 and adjust the batter head up or down depending on what sounds best on the particular drum and what sound I want for the song. I just did two songs where I used my 60’s bronze Slingerland snare, and had the tuning pretty close to what you mention, I think the batter was at 252 and the snare side I cranked up to 392 and it sounded great on that drum.
hey, been loving the covers recently! I have a few suggestions that are more on the modern metal side. these are a few songs from some of my favorite bands that I think would be fun to play? obviously if you don't like any of the songs no pressure to play them ruclips.net/video/EjnZVpVvJ-k/видео.htmlsi=w0t5cgAKmIVsK9lH ruclips.net/video/3VcTYyuGrgM/видео.htmlsi=oL3YU42zafb5-U9R ruclips.net/video/HSpaZjR_ULE/видео.htmlsi=WT_he8AyfQ35T-YH ruclips.net/video/-UUSUrr6zyo/видео.htmlsi=rBTzKeg9c8ZYTuBc (this one has a very slow intro. picks up at 1:40)
Thanks Alex. I appreciate the suggestions and will check them out. I need some new stuff to play. Hope you guys are well up there!
Such a great record this was. I also loved "Vasoline" Very nice cover once again, David.
Thanks Tom. As always, appreciate you listening.
Paul Geary was a solid drummer but I feel he was so underrated.
I would agree. A lot of his parts were just driving a hard quarter note pulse which fits this type of music. While it's easy to play, it's harder than it appears.
Timing off a bit, but good job.
Awesome ! !
Wow what sticks ! Look thin !
Scorpion Percussion 5A with venom grip.
Great sound again David! Love seeing your uploads.
Thanks man, hope you are well.
I remember this record from 1990 when I picked it up in a record store up in Grand Rapids, Michigan along wit the first Blues Traveler record, both excellent. I didn't care for Gary Cherone with Van Halen on the Van Halen 3 record though. I bought both on CD and listened to them extensively in my 1990 Ford Ranger XLT Supercab with a pretty elaborate aftermarket audio system. This really takes me back. Thanks David, as always another great job!
Thanks Tom. Yeah, Gary’s vocals on this album are strong and Nuno’s guitar work is just awesome. He’s made quite a career for himself outside of Extreme. Short-lived band but gave us some great songs.
Missing the double accent on the snare.! But still sounds great.
Isn't it a ghost note, and it is there.
Very nice, David. I have followed ZZ Top since the 70's and much prefer their earlier efforts. Although the Eliminator record was a fine record and enormous commercial success it always seemed to me that it was the beginning of all of their stuff sounding the same and I kind if tired of it. Nice job!
Thanks Tom. Yeah, I felt they got a little formulaic with Eliminator. It worked as it was a huge album for them, but not as gritty as their earlier stuff.
As a drummer and a Detroiter who was 18 years old when this came out, I have a soft spot in my heart for this song and I have to tell you, you kicked ass on this! Nice job!!!
Thanks Steve. If you want a good time, put a metronome to this song and enjoy the wild ride! Peter Criss was all over the place this one. But great drum part.
Really great drumming and cover David!
Solid cover!!
Thanks Martin.
Nice job once again, David. I always love looking in to see what you are sharing with us. Thank-you, sir!
Thank Tom. I try to mix it up and keep it interesting.
Hell yeah, what I was looking for. Go kantuckee wald cats
Killin it as usual.
Thanks Ricky!
Will Calhoun in the flesh
I wish. Need a mega bell ride to really capture his sound.
Fuck yea this rocks
Thanks Ben.
Hell yeah
Thanks Bubba!
awesome, deserves way more likes
Thanks for listening!
Boy what a tragic loss it was to the music world when we lost Stevie Ray! After struggling with his demons for a long time he was really coming into his own, and he was a joy to watch tear it up. He made it look so easy. Very nice cover, David!
He was just fun to watch play. So smooth and effortless.
Indeed he was.
Outstanding 👍
Thanks for listening!
nice job, I actually learned to play the referee whistle to this song.
Outstanding, David. I have lived my entire life in the Chicago area and grew up loving this terrific band since their very early days.
Thanks Tom. I’ve been listening to a lot of them since covering this song. I forgot how great their early stuff was.
Aweeeee yeaaaahhh. Love Chicago! Your solo at 3:52 was spot on. Fantastic performance all around. Love your mix/engineering work!
Thanks. Found a few new plugins that worked really well on the drum bus.
That’s such a cool song to play! I’ve covered it on my channel on a couple of occasions! Nicely done 👍
Yup, let me ask. Have you broken any hi hats before ir gotten wrist pain?
No to both. I would think you have to mash pretty hard to break hats.
se queda en la mano derecha se cruza ! falta mas practica bien un 4 le doy
{SEAL OF APPROVAL}
The official seal of approval! I’ll take it. Thanks.
Awesome technique, as usual, David! I love your drum forward mix!
Thanks. I know I can always count on you to keep me honest with my mixes!
Such a cool funk / rock mix
Thanks P. Fun song to play.
That was awesome. Great job.
Thanks. I see you're also a fan of the K Dark crashes! I love mine.
Great cover. Great drum tones.
Thanks. Yeah, these Gretsch drums sound great. I’ve had them locked in at this tuning for a while. It just works.
Fantastic!! Gotta love a cover that is spot on and replicating the original. Hate these “covers” where people add ridiculous fills and garbage that didn’t exist. If you are gonna cover them cover. If you want to make up a new song then go start your own band.
Thanks for listening. I’ve done both but typically stick with the original part. For me it’s fun to study the original score and figure why a drummer did what he did in the song. Also a great way to learn new stuff.
I Like Support Drum Covers ! This is a Nice Job ! 😎
Thanks for listening Jason
🔥🔥
Damn, David... you just took me back to my freshman year of high school and made me feel OLD. LOL Love your playing though!
Right there with you Tom! Thanks for the compliment and thanks for listening.
The world lost a great man when Sib Hashian passed.
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤟
Awesome job...wish I could've learned to play the drums. But everyone around me said..it's too noisy. Someday maybe when I'm 80.😊Boston was the best back then. Class of 1980😂
Yes, drums are noisy, no doubt. I did my best to sound isolate my studio in my house. It's better but not perfect. You can always get an e-kit!
I was a freshman in high school when this record came out and have listened to it more times than I could possibly guess, it's such a classic. You have done an excellent cover here David. I really enjoy your videos! Thanks.
Thanks Tom. Appreciate you listening. Boston was a great band. It’s too bad they only gave us 3 albums with the core lineup.
I'm 60 years old, will continue to try playing drums. As if you were still playing drums
Keep rocking brother! It keeps us old guys young!
You seem to be the only one on RUclips that gets the kick sounding correct... Like triplets?
Thanks! I think the key is the ghost notes on the snare that play the second triplet in between the kick notes. Gives it that swing feel.
This is insane man
Thanks for listening.
🔥🔥
Thanks Ron!
That shuffle hi hat tho. Impressive
Thanks Stuart. Yeah, it's a workout to play that in such a long song at that tempo.
Very nice. I remember hearing this song for the first time thinking I heard that killer riff before. I just relized they borrowed it from Jim Groce "I got a name" a couple years ago. Yes, I'm old enough to remember when that song came out too. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Thanks for listening John (If that's your real name, ha ha). Yeah, very similar hook to I Got a Name.
I like it! I wasn't sure Tom Sawyer could be played on a smaller kit, but here we are 🙂
Thanks. Imagine playing this on just a 4 piece kit!
