Incredible End Grain on this Wormy Maple Cutting Board
A custom end grain cutting board I made for a close friend out of wormy maple.
Wormy Maple, or Ambrosia Maple, has a misleading name as the mineral streaks and color variations are actually caused by the Ambrosia Beetle. The beetle infests the live Maple tree, depositing larvae that bore small “worm holes” and discolour the wood to create unique patterns and streaks.
As usual I cut a lot of sanding from the video, but my process is to go from 80 - 320 grit in stages and then finish the edges by hand.
I ran the CNC 3 times initially to fine tune the speed to reduce burning in the juice groove, which would be a pain to sand out after.

Custom Shelf Brackets for Kids Room | Calvin & Hobbes, Little Mermaid, Last Unicorn, Winnie The Pooh
Просмотров 1793 года назад
Quick video on some shelf brackets I made for my daughters room using the Glowforge. Really happy with how these turned out. Hopefully my kid grows to like the subject matter, but if not it will be easy to make new ones based on her interests. Not my best filming job, and I failed to get some good installation shots. Sorry about that! I will blame being a tired new parent on the poor effort, bu...
End Grain Cutting Board from Maple and Padauk
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.3 года назад
Two of my good friends recently got married and I offered to make them an end grain butcher block cutting board as a wedding present / house warming gift. They chose a striped design made from Maple and Padauk. The board is soaked in a mineral oil bath and then finished with a beeswax and mineral oil paste I make myself. I was lucky to source the beeswax from a local apiary in my town. PROJECT ...
Making a UV Curing Box for Resin Prints
Просмотров 4833 года назад
In this video I make a UV curing box for my new resin printer. Sorry it's barely a woodworking project, but I thought some people might find it interesting regardless. I used 1/8" wood cut on my Glowforge for the box, but you could just use cardboard box or a plastic container. Acrylic mirrors come with adhesive backing and just stick to the box. UV lights are also attached with adhesive backin...
Checkered End Grain Cutting Board - Maple and Roasted Maple
Просмотров 10 тыс.4 года назад
A maple and roasted maple checker / chess style cutting board. This was commissioned by an old friend (Ogreman of Alexander) from back when I played too much FFXI. I was thrilled to make it for him and I'm happy with how it turned out. I've never had great luck aligning these style boards so the pattern is perfect, but this one turned out damn close! Maybe it's the new table saw, or maybe I've ...
Question Block Cutting Board | End Grain
Просмотров 4345 лет назад
Another pixel art cutting board! This time around I made the ? block from Super Mario cut from 256 pieces of wood. The background wood is maple, the dark wood is roasted maple, and the yellow is Pau Amarello. I wish the brown and yellow had a bit more contrast, but overall I am happy with how this turned out. Im thinking of donating this board as a prize for GDQ this year, but if you are intere...
Simple Sturdy Workbench for the new workshop
Просмотров 7635 лет назад
New shop needs new workbenches! As the first of many I decided to copy Matthias Wandel's plans for his simple sturdy workbench. This is a great first work bench as you need nothing but a circular saw and drill. And really this could easily be done with a hand saw too. The bench is made from pine 2x4s and 2x8s. I attached the legs with glue and dowels for strength, but opted to just screw on the...
Simple Backyard Gate
Просмотров 3795 лет назад
A friend of mine recently got a new puppy and asked me to make them a simple gate. Gate is pretty standard. Made from pressure treated lumber and decking screws. I had intended to mount it level with the rest of the fence, but the post bracket made it so the gate wouldn't open inwards. So its up a couple inches now. Less than ideal, but sometimes you gotta make do! I originally built it to open...
The Incredible Hulk Cutting Board - krtwood Secret Santa Gift
Просмотров 4535 лет назад
My entry into the 2018 krtwood secret santa. The end grain cutting board I had already made for a holiday craft show, so unfortunately I didn't get that filmed. I found some Hulk clipart online and converted into a vector using Inkscape. I then imported that into Carbide Create and cut out using a .125" Flat Cutter End Mill. This was the first time I tried out the 2 pieces of painters tape with...
Live Edge Charcuterie Board with Epoxy Inlay for Canada Day 🍁
Просмотров 7 тыс.5 лет назад
I wanted to try out some epoxy inlays and figured some charcuterie / cheese cutting boards would be a good way to experiment. And what better occasion than Canada Day! 🍁 I made the boards out of ambrosia maple. Since it has some voids I wouldn't recommend this for a daily use cutting board unless you made sure you got some solid pieces. But for something like a cheese board it will be fine and ...
Hub of the Hammer Sign
Просмотров 1806 лет назад
I wanted to surprise a friend of mine who runs an event planning business, Hub of the Hammer, with a sign he could display in his home/office. It was also a good excuse to test out my new Shapeoko 3 CNC and learn something new. I grabbed their logo and made it into a vector in Illustrator. I then imported it into Carbide Create and cut it out of MDF using a #112 .0625" Flat Cutter End mill. As ...
Aware of Dog | pleas pet dog - CNC Sign from Undertale

My good friend Andrew requested a sign so he could notify his neighbors of his viscous beast Bucket. Bucket is a a sweet heart so we went for something a little funny. The sign is made from pine. I bought some "shelf pine" from my local home centre, meant for shelving and it worked great. You just need to dig for some without a lot of knots. Design was done in Carbide Create. Sign was carved on...

Pixel Art Cutting Board - Mario Mushroom - End Grain
Просмотров 6 тыс.7 лет назад
A pixel art cutting board based on the iconic Mario Mushroom. The white is maple, black is walnut, and the red is padauk. As usual I skipped a lot of sanding. I sanded with the belt sander at 40 grit post glue up to smooth out the roughness, then more belt sander at 80 grit. I then moved onto the random orbit sander and went through 120, 220, and 300 grit pads. Finished with mineral oil. You ca...

Brick Butchers Block Cutting Board - Maple and Padauk
Sorry in Australia these would nood to be three times the size of this.
I believe that haha!
I would like to pet the dog. (awesome sign!)
His name is Bucket (thanks!)
Dang
Very nice!
Have you experienced any cupping / warping after the last glue up? Or have you had it completely flat? :)
These thick ones hold up very well and I've experience no cupping using them daily. Though I do oil them often. Some of my thinner ones from other videos have had some warping. A learning experience and I no longer make any that thin because of it.
These are “edge” grain, not “end” grain. You need to correct this in your title.
Wow you did such an amazing job!!!!
Thanks a ton!
Tearout doesn't matter I assume due to it just being part of the tool but man that MDF tears like crazy.
Yeah I absolutely hate working with MDF. Avoid it as much as possible.
Thank you for this video
Thanks for watching!
I believe that this is ambrosia maple. It is named for the ambrosia beetle that causes the discoloration and holes.
Correct! We call it wormy maple locally but I never really understood why. I guess because the streaks look wormy?
@@mccrone It's because the larvae (or worm) from the ambrosia beetle eats through the wood and disperses ambrosia fungi spores causing the dark color as it tunnels through.
Very cool. I like how there's both symmetry and asymmetry at the same time. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Looks great.
Thank you!
I love how the end grain turned out on this piece, it almost looks like a Rorschach painting.
Beautiful job
Thank you!
@@mccrone you’re welcome.
Cool project and also you could engrave detail
Great idea!
Neat I guess but way too small to be considered cutting boards. I definitely can’t put a 13 oz steak on those.
Yeah I never make them this small anymore. It was more of a serving board than cutting board size.
Such a sick build!
Thanks!
I have tried end grain boards. They tend to cup. Any thoughts ??
A few of these did cup overtime. I no longer make them this thin. Anything an inch or bigger Ive never had issues with though!
Sometimes a third hand would be nice. Lol
It really would! Haha
my padauk bleeds a lot (making the other wood pinkish), how did you workaround that?
Having the same problem, Somebody suggested to use mineral spirits, slowed it down but still bleeds, ruined 3 cutting boards can not get it to stop tried many things.
I tried the mineral spirits, but still a problem, never using padauk again.
Ive found cleaning the board thoroughly with a tack cloth before finishing helps a lot. Sorry I didn't show it in the video.
I use an air wand and blow out the sanding pad pretty often then blow closely into the grain to keep the red from bleeding into other wood. Using a tack cloth before applying finishes is a must. Until the red residue is no longer showing on the cloth. This will prevent it from being horrible....I had quite a few of my board come out amazing doing this
Two bleeding problems here. Padauk bled into the Maple. Not a huge issue. A bigger concern is it bleeds onto try towels when wiping. I’m on my third coat of Howard’s butcher block conditioner. Assume this is fine dust that will eventually go away? Any insight is appreciated.
I love that the sped up sound of your saw sounds like a nine inch nails song
Oh man, don't reach over the blade like that. :)
Thnx. I learnt alot
Glad it was helpful!
Try using a picture from your kids for the cut outs next time, nice work...
That's a fantastic idea!
Man that’s beautiful! You sell these, and how much?
Sorry for the late reply! Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I do sell these for $150 Canadian. Etsy link is in the video description.
What a great video, congratulations! What do you think of soda openers made of zinc alloy?
Thanks! I actually didn't consider the material the openers were made from. I believe I got these ones on amazon at the time. Is zinc a lot weaker?
Glad we got to see lil Bucket too!
Thanks! He's a great pup!
Nice looking book and or toy shelf
Thanks!
Your channel is pretty underrated but don't let that discourage you keep up the work. Edit: :)
Thanks! I appreciate that. I suspect it's because I post so infrequently, but I'm hoping to get more content going now that life has calmed down a bit. Appreciate you watching!
NIce vid, at the end, whats is that liquid u sinked the chopping board on?
It's pure mineral oil. Now a days I follow that soaking up with a mineral oil and bees wax mix I rub into all sides.
Good job 😀 what thickness of the blocks? what dimension of the board. Please answer
Thanks! I don't have the board anymore to measure but each block was around 4cm thick, 7.5cm wide and about 30cm long. So the entire board was 45x30x4 approx. In inches that is 18x12x1.5 Hope that helps!
Maravilhoso!!
Thanks!
I am a cutting board novice. As in, never made one. A couple of questions: Why run the walnut through the planer at ~1:30? And second then why not the holly? Also, judging purely from the top, looks like you have an 'ol R4511 table saw? Thanks for your help!
It's been a while but I think the walnut was rough sawn, so I ran it through the planer to clean up the faces for glueing. Since I milled the holly myself it didn't need this. And you are right, that is the R4511. Great saw! I love the marble top it has.
Why didn’t you run your blade all the way up
I think I wanted to keep the as much clearance as possible until I needed the blade at that height. It's been a few years so I could be mistaken.
lol like ur pencil sharpener 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks! haha
Man, I wish you’d make more videos. Good stuff brother! :)
Thanks for watching! I have a few in the hopper I'm hoping to release soon. Now that my kid is a bit older Im hoping to find more time in the shop and post more often.
@@mccrone ahhh I feel you. 16 month old over here lol. Looking forward to it!!!
@@enzprintco.8625 Ours just turned 16 months as well! haha. It's a hectic time for sure.
@@mccrone November 10? Haha
@@enzprintco.8625 Halloween :)
Soooo, I just started wood working and I'm not the brightest crayon in the box.. I planned to make one like this and realized I started and finished my rows with the same wood. So, now it just lines up without the checkered pattern when I flip my pieces lmao
I've done that before! Haha I think my solution was to glue it up offset and just trim the parts sticking out afterwards.
I love the video but only see one thing I would have done differently. I would have used water to raise the grain and then sanded again and then gave it the oil bath, otherwise awesome way of doing the brick pattern. Good job!
Great idea! Thanks for the tip and for watching!
Thanks for sharing! Question. What are the dimensions of the individual squares?
Thanks for watching! I believe each square was 3/4" squared.
How thick are you going on the ' mortar '? 1/8" or 3/16" or some other number?
It was 1/8". My local supplier sells wood at that thickness so I figured using it was the easiest solution.
Why the speeded up video?
I figured if I showed it in real time people might find it boring, if you wanted a slow version I could upload it at normal speed. It would be very long though.
Red with white spots....
Great idea! I'll have to try that!
Maple, Walnut and Padauk? So awesome!!!
I love the way the combo turns out. Thanks!
i plan on making a cutting board similar to this for a friend and really like the way you went about putting it together. is there any special orientation of the wood i should know about before starting this project
Sorry for the late reply. You will want to orient the end grain so its pointing up for the final glue up. This will make the board much more durable.
@@mccrone thank you for replying any chance you can go into more detail about the orientation because im not sure what you mean end grain pointing up. should i be alternating each piece like a normal end grain cutting board?
Looks sharp, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Great work, they look amazing. What was that in the tub that you used to finish them? I'm guessing mineral oil?
Yes, it is. These days Ive also mixed some melted beeswax into it.
All 3 look quite good, but I think the "outline" lacks a bit. Just my opinion.
Thanks! I agree it wasn't my favourite of the 3.
Yes.....Thank you.
No riving knife on the table saw? It's only a matter of time before the blade bites you.
You're right, I should have had one back then! The saw didn't come with the knife as I got it used, I did eventually buy the Microjig splitter though. I have another video about installing that.
WOW
