Holly Tomás Design

Добавлен 25 дек 2018
I'm a musician and surface pattern designer based on the south eastern coast of Scotland. I’m lucky enough to live in a house surrounded by trees, so when I first started painting, I took my inspiration from them. They felt very familiar to me having looked at them from my window for years, but working with their leaves brought me even closer to understanding them. Having said that, I have an enduring love of flowers and I use florals, for the most part, in my designs. I really love Scottish wild flowers, especially the humble little ones growing by the coast or in the forests… Sea Spurry, Thrift, Tufted Vetch or Wood Sorrel, Briar Rose and Dog Violets. What i want to bring to my classes is a sense of being wrapped up in nature so much, that it completely drives out all negative ‘head chatter’ and allows you to sink down into that inner calm place of yours... you know it's in there somewhere, right? :O)
Harriet's Garden - Loose Watercolour & Ink Florals
*Materials listed below
I painted this over the summer. We live in South East Scotland, but, due to me not being able to travel far, we booked a wee holiday in Northumberland.
It rained. A.Lot. haha... but it was a joyful, restful time, as I was able to paint florals most evenings :O) I set up a little working area at the kitchen table and painted flower after flower.
I instantly knew I wanted to make a video for you! This was the first one I painted with this purpose in mind.... I then painted another, which I made into A Skillshare class (Joyful Florals) is any of you happen to have a membership. skl.sh/3AVVkpW

Mai - a little ditsy on a coaster
Просмотров 3492 месяца назад
I loved doing this for you. I'm pretty sure I'll be doing more coaster work, it's such a sweet little shape to be painting on - I've always loved squares! - and this is a relaxed painting style, just a slow and steady building up of layers. The reason why I think it's relaxing is that there are a lot of repetitive (meditative) movements, and the style means that, if you're not liking an area, y...

Gorgeous Holly!
Thanks, Ruth! I must have about 20 sheets of watercolour paper with florals all over them.... couldn't stop haha
thank you @lindakelby1353 I had to re-upload the video, so your comment isn't showing. Just wanted to say I'd seen it 😊 Thank You!
Such a pleasure to watch, beautiful
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it 🥰
Your style is oh so unique!
Forgive me for the late reply! Thanks, that's a lovely comment! 😍
Just stunning! What a beautiful lesson on layering. Those flowers look like they are jumping off the square. Thank you for sharing your beautiful skills as an artist. 🌺🌸🌻🌼
Awww, Lisa, that's totally made my day. Thank You! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! 🌺🌿🌺🌿

Hi, love your work, may I ask why you wear the gloves please?
Hi there! Thank you,... and, I wear the gloves because I have Osteoarthritis plus muscle weakness from Functional Neurological Disorder. The gloves keep my hands warm, and that helps 😊

Love this Holly! Can’t wait to watch on Skillshare.
Thanks Janet! Look forward to sharing it with you! ☺
Ah, thanks Ruth! 😊❤
Beautiful.
Thanks Christine! 😊
As usual absolutely beautiful!
What does the witch hazel do?
Hey again Brenda 😊 I was kinda using it as a replacement for bleach, as I'm a bit sensitive to chemicals... It doesn't work quite the same way as bleach, but has a quality of its own. What I found was that it allowed the watercolours to blend in a slightly different way, and also added a dreamy quality to it? Hard to explain. Hopefully, you'll get some nice effects, if you try it 😊
@@hollytomas8905 Hi Holly, Thank you for responding.
Beautiful, what did you drop it the centers that made the pink spread out?
Hi Brenda! Thanks so much. I drop a dilute of bleach in the centres! Isn't it fab. I do love using bleach occasionally. I mix a tiny amount in a little bottle and keep it on my desk. I would say probably 30% bleach 70% water, but obviously some bleaches are thicker than others, so you might need to just tweak the percentages a bit. Are you over on Instagram? I'd love to see what you do... 🥰 I'm: instagram.com/hollytomasdesign/ Take care, and thanks again! 🌹🥀🌺
@@hollytomasdesign Thanks again Holly. I haven't created an art Instagram channel yet. I mostly do watercolor for stress relief.
@@brendareed5050 ah, yes, that's how I got into art too... it brings so much balance doesn't it. I always feel I've been for a walk round the garden after I've painted. I am doubly pleased that my art is helping you unwind. Take care of yourself. 🥰
@@brendareed5050 Sorry for any confusion, just realised I replied from my other account! 🙄😂
@@hollytomasdesignNo problem, I never would have noticed if you didn’t say anything. I am loving your art style. Are you selling pieces?
This is really beautiful and I love your style. I have all kinds of gouache and need to start using it. Thanks for the wonderful inspiration.
Thanks so much Kandice! I'm glad this has given you gentle nudge towards using your gouache 😊
Hello my friends, I enjoyed watching your videos, keep it up I hope you always good luck 🙏💜
So pretty! Ill try this. My goauche paint doesnt go smooth like that but ill try my best to get that consistency. Thanks for sharing this!
Oh Hi Merlinda! Ah yes Gouache can be challenging. And different makes react differently too. You can use white watercolour if you have that? or Dr Ph Martin's Bleedproof is good www.amazon.co.uk/Dr-Ph-Martins-Bleedproof-White/dp/B008CRS1CM/ref=sr_1_2?crid=5Q5XTWRLVXXK&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.9uZBYU2x4cSEMSAFYcKgBYkRE50IOq4kDi5gw1mpFIwmMBvRHjsOwqPexpuuemjY.NtvJhr-fnRgAerWwgpuP2SdioXBJ1w1eLoEh6rnCvi0&dib_tag=se&keywords=dr+ph+martin%27s+bleedproof&qid=1714683503&sprefix=dr+ph+martin%27s+bleedproof%2Caps%2C148&sr=8-2 Let me know if I can help in any other way. So very LOVELY!!! Thanks so much.
Ah, thanks! You're very welcome. Glad you enjoyed it! 😀
Holly, this was so fascinating to watch with all of the layering and final touches at the end! I love your choice of colors with these delicate white flowers….which remind me of wild roses. I also enjoyed the music! The Isle of Skye is on my bucket list! Thanks for sharing your talent❤
Awww Janet, you are my new best friend! Thank You! I'm so glad you enjoyed it, it's totally made my day!!! Glad you liked the music too.... I bought it via Pond5, I forgot to mention. I wanted to transport whoever watched it :O) Definitely worth keeping Skye on your bucket list. The whole of the Highlands are spectacular. What gorgeous colour/texture play. Gotta go run to my studio now.
ah, thanks! I'm so glad it inspired you! 😍🥰
Love it! I did something similar many years ago with mulberry or rice paper and gesso. Applying the gesso with my finger tips in random spots, after it was dry I applied watercolor, when that dried I ripped up pieces and used them as collage in art journal 😊
So glad you liked it. Oh wow, that sound so cool! I've got gesso and mulberry paper, so might have a bash at that! Thanks for sharing. I love trying new things 🤩
Such an interesting technique, Holly! Thank you for sharing! Xxx
Thank you! 🌿
I love it. Soooo beautiful.
That's so kind, thank you! 😊
This is so soothing and so creative I could use my kitchen aid spatula…..lol …Blessings 💗🕊️🙏
Yes!! I meant to say, you can use anything similar, a spatula, an old bank card, a guitar plectrum.... even card or paper folder a few times? I'm glad you found it soothing.... that's the aim of the game. Take care x x x
Yes it I’d so difficult when you get in a slump of not feeling creative so frustrating and you feel your wasting your talent I’ve been trying to get in the flow but the creativity bug 🐞 is just not there I’ve even bought a few new books and supplies but still no luck. The surrounding evilness of the controllers is depressing
I hear you! it's deeply frustrating. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. You are doing your absolute best 💓

This is beautiful, Holly! Thanks for sharing.
What kind of paint do you use? Is it acrylic?
Hi there, I'm using white gouache, but watercolour (used more thickly) or acrylic would be great too.... even poster paint. Let me know if I can help further 🙂
Wow,interesting
Yeah, it's really cool! I plan to do more projects using this method 🥰
I’ve just recently found your videos on RUclips and Skillshare. I love the organic feel to your painting and your music adds that special touch! My ancestors are from Scotland and your Scottish wildflowers are amazing! Just beautiful!

What size brush/ brushes are you using? Do you buy a certain brand you prefer over otjers?
Hi Susan, thanks for your question. I'm using, what I think, is a size 6 round brush. This was an inexpensive one in a set of Caran D'ache gouache paints, but the brand I tend to gravitate towards is Escoda. Really love their brushes.... Hope this helps! :O)
Very nice artwork : ) .
