Hi Matt here from the land down under. As far a stretch bands go...I use old bike tubes...they work a treat, one under each foot....a rounded piece of wood between the tubes and away you go...if you want more tension just wrap the tubes around the rounded piece of timber...cheaper than weights by a long shot....love the vids man.
Fig Newtons still work!
Your body should adapt to the soreness over time just like everything else. Issue is really how long that takes and if it fits with peoples lives. Just as you said fun is required in my mind, since without that people aren't really "living", they are more just existing.
avoid, thinking too much about yourself!!
Hey I'm 70 and have been athletic my entire life. Moto, running and cycling the past 25 years. But just this year my knees got really bad. Can barely walk but can still ride half decent. Tried everything to no avail. This really sucks!
I started using Squirt then Smoove which I found marginally better. About two years ago I switched to Super Secret drip on lube which is substantially better than either of the two aforementioned products. I will not use the hot wax version however as two coatings of the drip version gives 96% of the hot wax protection...
Great video! I’m 57 and started biking about a year ago. Now I can ride 40-60 miles at a time and aim for 120 miles per week. I also decided to add some supplements and amino acids to my routine-Creatine Monohydrate, Beet Root Powder, Super Greens, Collagen Peptides, L-Arginine HCI, Glycine, Vitamin D3 & K2, NAC, NAD, and Spirulina. Turns out, they’re working great-I feel better, have more energy, and have lost 60 pounds! Plus, I’ve switched to a higher-carb diet, and it’s been a game-changer.
Good Solid advice that I agree with. (maybe that is why I say solid haha) But I am 68 been riding 40 years & agree with all you have said. I do those exact stretchs cobra, deep squates etc & feel better for it. My diet is as you described too. Thanks!
To be honest, I find it very reassuring that someone like you also experiences age-related health issues despite the fact you are healthy from cycling. I’m 56, I used to play a lot of rugby and did a huge amount of weight training up until I hit 50 to 52. I still weigh 95(ish) kg, I have a plastic knee, but I still enjoy cycling. That moderates my health as far as I’m concerned 👍
I’ve been reading more and more that weightlifting is as important as cycling. I’ll be 69 next month. Started a few years ago when I couldn’t run anymore because of arthritis. Bought a bike for $100. On Craigslist and rode about 2 miles. No knee pain at all. Yes I was nervous about cars. Did 28 miles this morning. Did end up getting a knee replacement because even walking was bothering me. Now Ride about six days a week and lift weights every other day.
The one thing I would not do as an older cyclist . Is chit chat into a phone while I'm on the road ...any slight mishap will severely interfere with "The Race to Stay in Place"
Wise words 🙌🏽 I can certainly relate to that. 52 here and can feel age coming but I’m fighting back.
great Video. Great comments. Great observations.
Can I ask what make of sunglasses you have, really like them. Thanks
@@gileshammond Tifosi
Great tips. I really hate the weight lifting. I find I'm injuring my whimpy stick arms and then I have to take a break for a while. I'm a goalie and I have to stretch so I don't spilt in half. Remco Evenpole's video of fueling at gas stations for his 8 hour training ride was a fun eye opener
Come to the UK , pot holes, traffic, cold weather, limited cycle paths, 10 hour wait in A&E if you fall off. Im 70 and have cycled from the age of 14, I use Zwift as I dont feel safe on the roads even on shared paths, dogs off the lead is common, last year I got knocked off by a dog going in my front wheel. Weight training and Zwift plus hour walks is what I do now, I am very envious of the cycling environment that you have in California.
I love your videoes, your attitude! I feel good when I watch them. Riding solo where you think about nothingness or you think about ways to save the world. LOL. Life is a beautiful ride.
Just subscribed. Will be looking forward to seeing your other videos.
Great advice. Fantastic attitude. I am 70 years old and think and do the same. Not about the miles but smiles. Happy riding! Life is a beautiful ride.
tell me about your bikes!!!
72 last week. Since my retirement in 2018 my habit is 3 bike rides a week and three hours in the weight room. Yes my legs are sore the next day , but I don’t race . I hit 75% of my max heart rate and maintain. When I die,I’ll stop,
Great video and well presented. My takeaway from this is that although as we get older we should all have regard to the need to fight age-related decline, ultimately riding your bike should mainly be about the fun of it - you don't need to follow all the usual advice on training and diet 100%, just getting out and riding is half the battle.
Thanks again for a great video, all these things have been an issue, was swimming to try to gain upper body strength, then covid closed down the pool, need to start back, recently bought a bowflex, haven't put it in my shop yet, too many bikes, and i try to do some stretching, but i am forced to look at my diet, there's times , i found that i have strengh and power and other times lagging, all about nutrition and hydration, i force myself to drink alot of water, turning 66 next month, feel fortunate to be able to do long rides at a fast pace, carbon wheels changed my life and speed, plus electronic shifting, what a joy, it amazes me to ride with guys in their 60s and 70s at 20mph on long rides, thank you so much for your insights. Rick F Oregon
I am 76 in MD and do and think exactly like you. 4 k mi per a year. Care for upper body muscles. Good luck to all on two wheels.
It's my understanding our bones require impact to stay strong which is a problem for cyclists as there's no impact involved. Hence, add cross training with jogging, hiking, or dancing to add some impact to one's bones and keep them strong.
Nice bike. Better than the ones you can buy today
Don't forget leg day because muscle loss is rapid as you get older
No getting 🌞 where I live
Wouldn't cycling in an upright position be better for the spine?
Sir, are you on Strava? Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
The absolutely best part of the video are the rim brakes and non integrated cockpit! And of course, the ride.
is that an SMP saddle?? thinking BOUT TRYING ONE
Here's a video I made regarding it: ruclips.net/video/1_iXEBm7Jj8/видео.html
For years I rode an SMP, but as I got older (65) and ride more rough roads, I switched to a Specialized Mirror ( Romin on one bike, Power on the other). So much better than any other saddle, really helps with vibration and impacts over the course of a 3-5 hr ride.
Have you ever fasted for 18 hours and ride without eating?? I have and i have plenty of energy up to about 50 miles.......then i have to eat something
I have had 11 surgeries due to broken bones. Used to lift 5 days a week. Haven't lifted in 3 years and never have felt better.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
I am right there with you man. Love your videos......i turn 60 in May
That's a big milestone, enjoy the ride!
Now 70 yrs old, To be able to follow the longevity group, i retired and moved to Spain some 15 yrs ago Hahaha Spain is best for cycling just like Cal but cheaper, more roads available, love the hills and cheaper wine. Weights is mostly in the winter with Zwift inside when the weather is not good Flexibility is just about every day, nutrition similar to yours but 2gr/kg of protein Around 10,000km/year is essential and mostly combined with my wife, no electric. Hills and HIIT are key to improving. Weights helped me to increased my Vo2max My goal is to keep my VO2 max>hear rate as long as possible and keep my grip strength 50-55kg as long as possible
Wow, at 64 I don't get what the soreness is after lifting weights and biking afterwards. If you get cramps, use some electrolytes. No more cramps or injuries. Also, started riding an eMTB.
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Too many cyclists are way too serious , this is supposed to be fun !
I hate riding in the rain, gotta clean your bike.....ouch
Really enjoyed the video...66 yr old and I also started weight training and doing more stretching exercises this year. I have a gym where i live but also use the bands occasionally. I had to chuckle a bit during your nutrition rant when you brought up the fig newtons which i took on some of my rides plus the mexican food. I do miss socal (Los Alamitos) and all the riding i did back then on the PCH and river trails but living back in cold Pennsylvania now waiting for spring.
It sounds like you're doing great! Keep it up.
I have switched to Molten Speed wax 3 years ago , similar to the Silca wax bath and love it and will never go back
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Ocean Views Helps.. I'm in my 60's an I think your 3 points are spot on !! As we get older comes wisdom.. Nutrition for me might be different for you..
Thanks for sharing!!
Excellent, excellent, video. Now I don't have to do one! Well maybe I will anyway, but I won't say it any better than that! For stretching, I find it points out where I am tight or out of balance, often helping me explain or even prevent riding related stress on joints, etc. And I know that area you were riding like the back of my hand. gg
@@oldguyandabike cool!!!
I clicked on your video because I thought, “here we go, another testosterone video”. Thank you for not pushing that narrative. It’s fine for people to choose to do that, but it’s not fine for them to race and compete. I’m 65 and still race. We have age groups for a reason which you explain very well in your video how our bodies change with aging. We can’t be Dylan Johnson. TRT is doping. I have physician friends that say half of their masters age patients take it. They see hematocrits in the 50’s from TRT. Mine has never been above 43. That must feel amazing. Except for the stroke risk. You mention several “influencers”. Two, Huberman and Attia admit and talk extensively about TRT. In my mind, they’ve lost all credibility. It’s like they’ve given up. They’re getting older and can’t take it. I say, buckle up, getting old is not for the faint of heart. I’m sure people that take it feel great and want to race. But, please don’t! You’re depriving those that are doing all the right things mentioned in the video of a placing in a race they deserve and paid good money for. Ultimately, it is about fun, that is the best advice from this video, and Mexican food is the best food on the planet. What’s wrong with good old rice and beans with a little carnitas, guacamole, and pico thrown in?
@@Echelontotheleft Yeah, TRT is controversial, but I don’t want to take the statistical change of the side effects… so I’m 2 mph slower… so what? I don’t care.
I've taken the same path as you with chain lubes. Conventional lubes. messy as can be. I have used Squirt lube for years and literally never worn out a chain with Squirt (here have been other reasons for putting on a new chain). Squirt 10X cleaner than traditional lubes. Decided to give the Silca system, including Strip Chip a try. Mostly to see if it would be that little bit cleaner than Squirt. Not having to clean the factory lube off the chain "priceless". That alone is reason enough to go with the Silca system. It's very early days for me with the Silca system, but I'm a convert. Clearly the hot dip waxed chain has stayed very clean. I've just now applied the Silca drip wax, yet to even ride. So, I'll see if this is messier than the hot wax. It seems to have a slightly greasy feel on the chain compared to the hot wax. Like you, I intend to only hot dip occasionally rather than every week or two. Great video, keep it up.
#4 on how to fight the age related decline .... Move along the ocean in Southern California.
Greetings from "La Mancha" in Spain. My most sincere congratulations for all of your videos. I completely agree with everything you say. I'm looking forward to seeing your next video Thanks
Thank you very much!
Great Vlog. 69 years old cycling forever. Ex “traditional” athlete years ago. Have a coach. You nailed it perfectly. Lifting makes the next ride or two rough. I do stretch and upper body weight work. Light. Yoga type body work feels good to me. I ride with 20-50 yr old kids, lotsa miles…road and gravel. Don’t race anymore. I feel the hardest, consistent positive trait is diet. Don’t really ride to eat, but use it as an excuse every now and then!
It sounds like you've got a great system going!
@ retired for 8 years. Plenty of time, but summer heat in FL is brutal.
american attitude, almost arrogent!
@marvinkamei7007 Oh bloody hell!!
attitude make people older!! after cycling walking around is good or swimming!
