When I used oil on a cross-country bike with Shimano transmission, mostly for competitions, the chain was done after 10-15 rides, no more than 500 kilometers. The cassette lasted a bit longer. After I used Squirt for one season on 12 speed SRAM Eagle transmission, I decided to check the chain wear. The wear indicator showed no wear at all. I am still not sure if SRAM components are so much better than Shimano or the wax is that much better.

you can make a combination between immersion and squirt. when you already have a bag of silca wax, melt it in a large flat baking dish, when it hardens, cut narrow sticks with which you will touch the heated chain while it is on the bike, wipe it with a cloth and repeat once more, you have cleaned and lubricated the chain

Ive just ordered a pair of these. The sizing is as confusing as Shimano. I wear big size, which is 14Uk, 15us or 50Eu. However my Shimano cycling shoes are 52 which is crazy. All I need is 33cm insole. According to Lake website 33cm insole means size 52.... Im waiting for 52 and i hope they'll fit.

well I say endurance chip 750 km on trainer awesome and strip chip 10 mın cleanıng. silca is better . aslo driping wax with hand annoying to me.

Wait until you try on a pair of the new MX30G .... game changer because the Boa cables have their pull geometry reversed compared to the 238. Zero heel slippage. Less cables up front and more towards the heel. I sold my lightly used 238s for $100 cuz I hated heel slip. Blew my mind when I tried on the MX30G.

This may not have anything to do with your injury. But I’m a caretaker now for my wife for rt shoulder surgery. I do everything: wash laundry, wash my kits which I’ve always done, cook make beds, dress her, help her shower. Lots more. Plus she can’t do anything she likes: counted cross, sewing for others or for herself, make quilts. It’s killing her. All she can really do is watch tv. Nothing for 6 weeks. Her arm is in a sling for that time. It’s tough

Funny how all these bikes are $6000 to $12000 but the owners are so flipping anal about getting another month out of a chain ! And they spend gobs of $ and way too many hours doing it. You make $85 an hour at work but spend 10 hours a month on chain cleaning , bored much ?

I tore my calf a week ago! And I still can’t walk without crutches. Were you on crutches for a few weeks?

Sorry to see you're injured. I'm off the bike two months for repair of retinal detachment. Kills me I've missed the best parts of Socal summer! Suggest you can try pool workouts; non weight bearing, good cardio and it helps the spirits. Been a big help when I've had nagging injuries.

Lay the chain flat on a crappy old board and put the Squirt on the chain and work it in with your wife's tooth brush ! WAY more efficient and way quicker !! Let dry overnight and done !

Why Super Secret has that strange consitency ? Every chain I have behaves like "Silca-fobic" (silca super secret doesn't stay on it, however other waxes/lubes don't have that problem) ? even after cleaning them, or should I clean in some specific spirit ?

Hang in there. I know it is rough to go from riding to instantly no riding, especially the amount of riding you were doing. Is this the first injury that sidelined you from cycling?

I’m in the UK, where the roads are in a terrible state - potholes everywhere and glass and grit on the roads. I still find I’m OK with normal Gatorskins. I run 25c, as I can’t get any bigger on my winter bike with mudguards, which are needed as the roads are constantly wet between October and March.

Been waxing with grocery store paraffin for years now, although I have been alternating between lubrication methods. Grocery store paraffin does not last long (approx. 200 miles) and is soft enough to collect dirt. Squirt is even worse regarding dirt collection, although I had not contemplated the approach of never cleaning a Squirt lubricated chain with solvent (i.e. just wiping and reapplying), but that dirt gets on cassette and chainrings too. Same for T-9. I just tried MSpeedwax and it appears to last much longer than grocery store paraffin, but it has MoS2 so it is dark and I can't tell if it is collecting dirt, plus I just installed a new drivetrain so it's not a fair comparison. Note that being anal retentive and having access to a vacuum chamber, I vacuum infuse the wax into my chains. Although this makes waxing even more time consuming, but waxing and vacuum infusing at work is safe. I am worried that if I wax at home and I forget and leave the crock pot on all night in my shop I might burn my house down. My current plan (for better or worse) is to wax, touch up with Clean Ride for another 3-4 rides, then oil with my homebrew chain lube (5-20 wt motor oil with a friction modifier added), then clean drivetrain and repeat. I contend that there is no good way to lubricate a chain. It's either small maintenance frequently or big maintenance less frequently. $45 for an 8 oz bottle of Silca Super Secret Chain Wax? That's obscene! The cheap SRAM 1051 chain I just replaced had 13k miles, had probably been removed 50+ times, and I always used the original master link(s). A problem was the chain was so worn the rollers on the end links would fall out when I removed the chain and the little buggers can be hard to find. I tried replacing this chain two years and 6,000 miles ago, but my cassette was too worn and it skipped cogs so I decided to keep running it.

Personally I’m really not a fan of Gatorskins. Used them for years and was constantly getting flats. They’re also absolutely terrible in the rain. Changed to Schwalbe Durano and they’re much less prone to flats compared to gatorskins. Also a lot more grip in wet conditions but admittedly still not perfect. Anyone reading whos main priority over everything else is puncture resistance, I would recommend schwalbe marathon or marathon plus. Be warned though very heavy and slow. Duranos the best compromise I’ve found so far.

i' ve been mixing silca and squirt and it worked well. Normally I put the chain each month in the silca wax bath and then I use secret chain wax, or when on holyday I use squirt and no problem.

I ride Gatorskins in the winter and GP5000’s in the summer. Punctures are much more likely in winter in the UK, due to wet roads, which have thorns and flints washed onto them, hence the need for greater puncture protection in winter.

Paraffin + ptfe and your set add a small squeezy bottle and your set for your travels too. A 120ml bottle will cost you under $1. And if your ride a lot it can add up. I think if you ride under 100km a week Silca makes sense

Great video! I have a morton's neuroma on each foot and just hadbmy first cortisone shots. I live in Southern California as well. Do you know the size of neuromas that had? Do you think that the surgery didn't go well or that the doctor didn't do a good job on the surgery?
