12:59 looks like near Ferryville. Possibly Rush Creek. Looks so different nowadays.
It's great to see these! Have lived in many of these towns along my life’s journey.
Well, I’ll be darned! Just as I’ve always heard-“There’s a bar on practically every corner in Wisconsin!” Great video, and thanks for letting me join you virtually!
I use AI on video and I am satisfied. It can actually save clips that are really poor otherwise. This is AI enhanced video DV tape. ruclips.net/video/BkYjVqbBqyA/видео.html
I liked it ..thank you
With all the trees growing up there, looks like it'd be a good place to put a logging railroad some day, lol.
The AI modified version was noticeably sharper, and this was just on an iPhone 13 screen!
AI is another excuse for people to be lazy the comparison is negegatle
Video starts at 2:02. Until then, it's some guy's nostrils talking a bunch.
From film to digital copy to AI enhancement to upload to RUclips to be compressed and streamed to my screen. The ai looked better but this really isn’t the best way to demonstrate how much better. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
the ai one is taller *im glad it isnt as cursed as i thought it was going to be*
I personally prefer the original footage over the AI. AI upscaling makes everything look "muddy", even if the provided footage is great. Textures will look like a watercolor painting and look fake. When something has been upscaled using AI, it feels like it loses its soul. That's just my 2 cents though. Mileage may vary.
Not bad for what it is. The expensive digitalization is better but for just general footage this is more than adequate IMO
On my IPad the AI enhanced images were markedly better.
The thing is I remember the original scenes from the 8mm and Super 8 home movies. But the kids today weren’t around for the details. As such any enhancement is a plus for the generations going forward.
I find the vintage video charming, even with its imperfections. But I don't see any harm in the AI enhancement that you demo'd for us if youre itching to try it. I assume there are several levels of enhancement you can choose from during the process.
My only concern with AI and I'm pretty sure in the music industry you lose your copyright ability over something that you make with AI. I wonder if that's the same for video?
The side by side rolling was a little less fuzzy. It didn't wash out the "vintage" look ya get with the super 8 films. Go for it Bee!
Thanks man!!
I have been digitizing 8mm train films for over a decade, mostly with a Retro-8 scanner from MovieStuff that converted the movies. This might not be a terribly popular opinion given our gargantuan modern displays, but with how small the gauge of 8mm film is standard definition resolution is usually adequate for digital conversions of films. Instead of trying to get every last pixel of resolution out of conversions I have always focused on a workflow to remove film dirt and film grain, in addition to exposure and color correction, and fixing films that were warped. I have always used a text-based tool called Avisynth for most that filtering. To me that makes for a better visual experience rather than all that dirt and grain blown up to HD resolutions (I have never messed with 4K video).
I would say it cleaned up the video quite well. I wonder if this would work on my old VHS footage? Thanks for the heads up!
It should work with your old VHS footage-that is what it is designed to do.
I didn’t see anything problematic with the AI. It was clearer, sharper, and… so…better. If the original quality is not great, the AI is likely to be a definite improvement. And with these old, hand held, poorly digitized films, the originals are rarely great. But I love them either way!! 😊👍👍
It can also do things (allegedly) like reduce shake.
I like the original better.
Interesting!...Just curious on why your preference for the original.
The footage used for side by side was shot at what appears to be Clybourn station on CNW Kenosha/Harvard Subdivision. The Beatrice Foods sign is a dead giveaway.
Yes indeed - I spent many years riding through there twice a day on the NW Line so it was fun to see this footage.
AI a bit better
I agree with the "little" qualifier. Not sure you get any quantum leaps in quality.
The AI footage did look smoother but I'm sure there's limitations as to how much it can make things look better. Some of the items being brought out for show are just too grainy or dark and it's doubtful if it can be fixed. Thanks for the comparison
Yes, I realize "garbage in, garbage out" applies, but when a video is kind of OK to start with, I think AI can give it a little boost.
I like it as an alternative to the cost of digitally remastering railroad film, if it was a very significant find perhaps I would want more money spent but for home video such as this AI looks great
Exactly. It is a business decision in this case for me - the cost to acquire the software versus the cost to have the movie reels redigitized.
I have watched 1000's of hours of uploaded railfan content here on RUclips -- so I feel qualified to comment! First, thank you to you! ...and to all those putting up vintage railfan videos to be viewed and shared. Imo right now as-is without A.I. you're a channel worth being subscribed to! A.I. upscaling does muddle details (and trains are all about details) but I personally don't find this off-putting if I'm not trying to build a model of it! The crispness and upscaling can be pretty good. Upscaling sometimes leads to terrible stuttering motion from smoothing out the fuzzy motion blur (trains are especially difficult) -- try a frame interpolation to add more fps if the A.I. software has it? 60fps or 120fps? The highest quality original digitization may always be preferable, even though in 2025 I still watch 360p videos sometimes. Don't be afraid to put some high quality videos through the A.I. too and see how they come out! I sometimes wish color correction or colorization could be done to match known colors (MILW orange, for example) -- but that might be asking too much lol Thanks for sharing footage and railfan moments in the first place and regardless of how the A.I. goes it should be fine :-)
I just realized I think I found your channel for the GP9 audio -- so ironic that I'm commenting about the visual aspect to your vids, sorry!
Thank you for the thoughtful comment. I see AI enhancement as a "kinda nice thing to have" but not necessary. I know many people will overlook quality issues if the subject matter is rare or gone and can't be replicated anymore. Funny - I almost posted the side by side of a Milw Road train but at the last minute went with the CNW scoots.
he AI enhanced version is clearer than the original version. What software did you use for this experiment? (Posted on 17 January 2025 at 2356 CST.)
I used HitPaw AI Video Enhancement. I kind of just arbitrarily picked them and used the free trial. So the video is not meant to be an endorsement of the product... although I think there was a definite improvement in the video.
The AI software does enhance, basically augmenting and filling in the gaps just enough to reduce the grainy gaps within the transferred film. I do not like seeing the AI used on the human face, it looks awful in that application I think.
Luckily most railfan videos do not deal with the human face but this software that I used had an application just for face closeups (thus recognizing that faces are an issue)
I give the AI a thumbs up.
Cool - thank you for the reply.
Thank you and your grandpa. I'm a big ACL/SAL fan and this just made my day.
Well thank you - appreciate you finding it and commenting. Glad you liked it.
I visited Green Bay last August for a day and a night. Stayed at St. Brendan's Inn which was very nice and a hoot! Of course, I was there on a Wednesday and apparently missed all the train action. I did go to the National Railroad Museum though. I missed seeing / visiting all those bars, too. Did see the C&NW Depot, but it wasn't open when I was there. Guess I might have to go again. Love the Packers! Looking forward to next year.
If I hadn’t of grown up in an alcoholic family, I would have really enjoyed this
How cool to see this. I grew up in Green Bay, lived there until I was 30. This brings back memories.
I live too far away (In SE Ontario, Canada), but if I was nearer, I'd go enjoy a root beer or other such beverage, and watch a few trains go by. And as another commenter mentioned, cheese (and/or curds). How can one go to the great state of Chee... I mean Wisconsin, without partaking in the purchase and ingestion of some of the finest dairy products in the whole country? Former driver who never missed an opportunity when I was in Wi.
Thank you for another interesting video on switching moves, KillerBee! I enjoyed watching this video. (Posted on 12 January 2025 at 2152 CST.)
No Northern Pacific???
“Someone“ needs to get themselves a lightweight rail scooter and a cordless electric chainsaw… Just a thought 😎
Hit me up Brian if you need help with field research for part II
LOL-I think I could rent a party bus for us all to go around in!!
Pittsburgh is fortunate to have an upscale restaurant located in Station Square with large viewing windows just mere yards from a double set of well-traveled CSX tracks. 🚂 🇺🇸
Is that the old PL&E station with a super cool large map of the Pittsburgh railroads ?
Enjoyed very much!
Excellent - that is my hope and desire.
Add cheese curds to your list… Can’t forget the cheese, curds in Wisconsin!!
True.....
what a fun project, nice video. I’m intrigued, there’s a few of the bars I would like to visit.
Thank you and I was hoping that I could increase the foot traffic at some of the places.
Check out the Northwest House in Sheboygan. Across the street from the Union Pacific yard office with big power tied down from the coal train. Inside they serve a simple but good menu with a classic bar. The walls are filled with railroad photos, posters and other memorabilia. 😁🚂👍🇺🇲
Yep, it was actually while sitting in there a few months ago this idea was hatched, believe it or not.
@killerbee6310 👍

OH man, you left me hanging....
I ate at the Titletown a couple of times when I was going to UW-Green Bay in the mid-late 2000s. I was sorry I couldn't get proper video of the trains that went by while I was in there as they had some of the best power lashups I'd yet seen; multiple IC Deathstars and the SD50/60Fs which you can't see anymore.
Maybe so, but at least you can still get videos of the trains going by....
Check out Shoots in Suamico
We got lots of those!
Yes, there may be lots of sequels....
Excellent video. If I ever visit Green Bay I'll definitely check these places out. I could spend all day at some of these places , drinking , smoking and eating. 😄👍🏻🍺🚬🚂🚃
...and waiting for the once/day train to finally go by-LOL
Yeah but it'd be worth it. I would get excited even if it was an abandoned rail line@@killerbee6310
