Engine explosion - Formula Vee - Donington Park 2022
My engine let go big-time in the qualifying session, leaving a fist-sized hole in the case... I felt the shockwave when it blew, and to add insult to injury it even punctured my own rear tyre with a piece of shrapnel! Watch the reflection in the back of my helmet for the fireball...

I have a very similar issue since I swapped the catches for fixed brackets! I think it's probably to do with them being too tight and squeezing the roof in somewhere, but so far I haven't worked out which catches are responsible. The fixed brackets and the original latches all have some adjustment on then, so in theory, slacken or moving some or all of them should fix it... I'd been trying to adjust the front brackets, but now I think about the physics, it could be the side brackets that are too tight... Let me know if you hear of a fix, or manage to sort yours out!

Got a feeling this may have been my car about 3 years ago, 2002 1.8i. I live near Alvechurch, it did need work on the sills, well one of them, silver hard top and I saw the car a while after I sold it and the wheels had been changed, like the ones on it in the picture. Weird if it was mine when I viewed this post at random. A grand for the work seems a lot though, I was quoted £500 for the work needed if it's the same car, a few coincidences there. The chap said he was taking it to Spain. Enough rambling on, was a good car, had it 12 years, just bought another one 2017, blame my wife.

I'll be trying to keep this one as long as possible... maybe with enough money I'll upgrade to a mk4, but planning on getting the front chassis rails done this year to keep it going for many years, yet. It's unlikely it's your car, but possible. I bought it from West Bromwich area and it's on Welsh reg plates (I think)... I'm pretty sure my sills had only ever been bodged, as they were totally gone - did you pay £500 for one side or for both sides?

My chagrin is that my 1992 NA6 does not seem to come with any of the pre-existing wiring for the heated rear window. No relay plug in the boot behind the license plate carpet, no plug for a fuse box to go in for the defog and antenna. Like the wires that run from those places have no place to plug those things in, they're just solid cables from one end to the other. Gotta try to get someone to wire my hardtop heated window up as I'd be a massive quality of life upgrade for these cold UK winter months. I also find I'm hearing the exhaust more too, which I don't think is a bad thing lol.

Interesting video. Connecting the rear heater element wire is easy. It uses the same plug as the one in the softtop. Once you've disconnected the soft top simply connect it to the hard top and vice versa when you remove the hard top in future. I'm not sure the soft top catches that you showed connect to the hard top but simply close when the soft top is lowered and remain stowed whilst the hard top is fitted. The hard top is secured at the rear by the "Frankenstein bolts" on top of the rear deck in front of the bootlid. If you do get those latches to connect please do another video about how you did it, thanks. Enjoy your MX5.

Thanks for commenting! My problem is that the hard top doesn't have any of the wiring harness - just 2 spade connectors on the screen itself where it should be plugged in. The OE one on my soft top is a permanent connection, so I can't use that without breaking the wiring and soldering a spade connector on... I've now sourced a new wiring harness so will just have that one for the hard top, and then plug that one in instead of the soft top one, if that makes sense? The catches at the rear (inside) do just tuck under to hold the soft top down - I should really do an update vid!

If it's a NA hardtop it won't fit the NB..I know I have one. Had to buy a NB pigtail to make it work

using bearings from another engine is not a good idea. all engines wear differently, not surprised it's tight. was the case checked for alignment? guessing this didn't make it into a car at any point.

This was a last minute attempt to get the car out by swapping all the internals from one case to another... unfortunately it was game over when we found this, and we pulled the entry. Now we have this case that's having various bits ground down, and the other one needs line boring. Not the best way to end the season, but we did well getting out there at all, looking at what we found!

@@jcaterracing consider it good fortune, wish you luck for next season. would be nice to get more info on rebuilding the engine etc and how it goes, though i appreciate the time and energy making/posting vids takes.

@@daos3300 Cheers! We should be getting this case back this week, so will see what I can do. I'd like to get more of Glenn's old racing tales but he thinks I'm weird if I try to record him - I was quite surprised he let me do this one! :D
