CCD vs CMOS - Test 2 - Nikon D80 vs D90

A quick comparison between the sensors of the Nikon D80 and D90 cameras, in other words another CCD vs CMOS sensor test. Nikon D90 in 2024 - Surprisingly Good Still Today!
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.2 месяца назад
Trying out the Nikon D90 - a prosumer level DSLR from 2008. Really nice usability, small and light body for a DSLR and good image quality. The biggest advantage over the predecessor, the D80, is the high ISO. It also has video, but it's nothing special - this was after all the first DSLR with a video function. Searching for the Perfect Low Light / High ISO Digicam
Просмотров 6603 месяца назад
Even though I have already found the perfect vintage digital camera for High ISO photos I find myself missing a lot of shots. The reason simply being the size of the camera - I don't have it with me all the time! So I decided to have a look at the small digicams that I haven't tested so much yet to see if there is one camera which has interesting enough noise and other glitches! SOOC Jpegs can ...

I've been shooting with a lot of ancient DSRLs recently and I got the urge to shoot with a "vintage" mirrorless for a change. The Fujifilm X-T1 can not really be described as "vintage" though as it is still a good entry in the Fujifilm X-system. In this video I got out and shoot with this camera to see how it is to use in 2024 and how it compares to older DSLRs. Chapters: 0:00 Intro 0:35 Midsum...
Photographing Liminal Spaces with Nikon D700 & Nikkor AF 20mm 2.8

I get a lot of comments about liminal spaces on my photos, so I decided to embrace it a bit more and shoot liminal spaces with more intention. Maybe not the best time of the year for this type of photography since it's so bright outside. The Nikon D700 might also not be the best camera for this purpose, it's too good, the high ISOs don't have that much grain, and no digital glitches are to be s...

Fujifilm Finepix S2 Pro - Fascinating Fuji/Nikon-Hybrid DSLR from 2002!
I'm on my second D90 now and keep coming back to it. It takes absolutely DREAMY photos in the right conditions. ❤
A D90 vs D700 video is appreciated. Thanks
Which one do you prefer D90 or this. BTW what country is this. Subd
I prefer the D700. This is recorded in Finland. Thanks for subbing!
The D700 seems very contrasty (is that even a word lol?), or is that due to editing?
I edited it a bit contrasty, the raw files are much more neutral. Now that I think about it, I should probably include an unedited raw comparison at the end.
Beautiful camera for wildlife when paired with my nikkor af 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6
I bought Nikon D80, love nikon DSLRs
Agree, they look too similar in daylight! 😅I prefer the "dirty noise" of the D80, but the D90 has a nice warmer tone there it seems. Nice image of the railtracks by the way, with the glowing globes.
I actually meant that the D90 has a bit dirty noise - it's very uneven and digital looking compared to the D80. But yeah the noise on the D80 looks much nicer! And thanks for liking my photo!
The D200 should be used mostly at 0.0Ev it's meter is one of the best configured from the factory. The D700 is set to overexpose to push its dynamic range. Nikon set all of its CMOS cameras meter higher. Like especially the D500 which is really bright at 0.0Ev. I'd put the D200 jpeg files up against the D700 raw files. In the D200, copy the Portrait settings to custom, then turn up the saturation in camera. Leave NR on Norm or High. I personally use High.
Do you know how far the year goes for the date timestamp feature?
I don’t understand how you get the pictures on the lcd screen from the view finder, I need help I just bought this camera, as a causal camera
You mean live view?
@ yes
Oh ok, unfortunately there is no live view on this camera
Thank you for sharing what worked for you! I fixed my COSINA CT1 SUPER following your video. The positions of the advance/shutter are different, but in the end, their functions are the same. So it worked! Thank you again🙏🏽💫
A great help - Thanks
I still use a D200 for personal and professional work. I'm only upgrading next year for video. I'll still use the D200 for stills. Also the film look comes from JPEGs. There used to be a custom curve D200 users downloaded to help get that roll off film has. If you set the camera to high saturation, high contrast, -2 sharpness. +1 EV, 800 iso, High NR JPeg Large, Basic or Normal. That setup is the film look used by fashion magazines in the 80s & 90s by film photographers.
Hello. How do you like Tokina 12-24?
I like it, it's a nice ultra-wide angle for older DSLRs. Although it has a some technical issues, like chromatic aberration, at a level which would not be acceptable for a modern lens.
comparing d80 and d90 is like comparing an early F-16A with an F-16 Block 70. Almost identical on the outside, but inside they are completely different devices. multicore CPU, CMOS matrix versus a weak single-chip processor and an ancient CCD matrix
Thanks!
Thanks, that was informative 👍
i just got this camera because my childhood camera died a few years ago sadly. This one is younger than me but it brings me back to my childhood from when cameras were used instead of stupid phones
Hi my camera photos come out black when I shoot manual mode I was just wondering if the chat or you can help me out
Fun review, thanks. I have a G1 and a G 12. I bought the G1 used, I could not afford it when it came out, but 20 years later and I now have it. I bought the G 12 new and used it a lot. I put a flash on it and started shooting in manual, both camera and flash. I have put the flash on the G1 and must admit seldom is my picture exposed well until the second or more shot. That is what digital is all about. Put a flash on it and shoot in manual, skip the video.
I'm thinking to buy this camera(rebel xti one) since it cheap because I want to learn photography before buying an expensive camera...I heard that this camera is good for learning
Great shots! I won an auction on D200 earlier tonight with 1800 clicks! I'm so excited. Can ypu suggest some lenses?? Love the video!!!
DAMMMM CONGRATS
Which camera were you using to film in this video please?
I used the Gopro 10 and the X-T1
I still use my Tokina 12 - 24mm f4 on my D200 coming up on 20 years. Fantastic landscape lens.
Arguably the reason you think the D200 CCD sensor is hype compared to the D700 CMOS sensor is because the D700 sensor (a Nikon/Toshiba) was perhaps designed and programed to be as close to the CCD sensor characteristics. As sensor technology evolved, more and more we see that the D200 and D700 image rendering became unique in comparison to cameras that followed. The D600/D610 would be the next closest to the D700, from there it all became almost homogeneous.
Great video! I recently picked up a nikon D40, a 1 generation newer entry level DSLR, with the same 6mp sensor, but compared to the d50 you can use any SDHC card, allowing up to a 32GB SD card to be inserted. I found it for really cheap (where I live) I got it for around 20 euros, but I got it from a seller confirming it had less than 2000 shutter count and was in great condition.
Can you take videos on a canon 30 d? 🤔
No video, the 60D is the first in this line of cameras to have a video mode
I like the photos my XT takes--they remind me of film photos. And even after 20 years, it's reliable and rugged, "gritty" as another reviewer noted. It's lightweight and handles really well. The buttons are very positive feeling. In short, it's a great camera for knocking about the neighborhood. It does need a decent amount of light, so don't expect it to punch with the wonder kids of today.
Still a good DSLR, nowadays, and the coming years. The problem with people nowadays - they're sick and blinded by the latest fuzz, tons of features, you pay money for - and noone, nobody does really want. If the composition is bad, it's *never* the gear to blame, but the 12 inches behind it. 🙂 Sadly, my D80 died on me with the dreaded aperture gear cog wheel issue. The D80 is prone to failure with this, and i've had less than 12k actuations since 2006...
Great photos you took! I have been a Nikon D40 (amateur) user for years and I love its CCD nice photos, ergonomic and feel. Recently I got a second hand D200 and it's like a super duper D40 for me. Similar feel, much better specs.
And I know, actually the D80 would be that super D40 but you know what I mean. :D I like your photos a lot, again.
Why you say the resolution is not good enough for social media? You're such a noob ahahahaha. Max resolution for Instagram is 1080x1350 (1.4 Megapixel), and for Facebook is 2048x2048 ( 4 megapixel), for Pinterest 1000x1500 (1.5 megapixel). If you don't know what you're talking about, don't talk about it 😁.
no speak english haha, muy buen video, voy a comprar esa cámara, por su precio accesible y su cuerpo robusto, a pesar de ser de hace mas de 10 años aun se le puede sacar provecho unos años mas
D200 no match for the d700 or the d60 fòr that matter ..
How about the stabilization when we are walking and recording
The Nikon D200 is so cheap to get it is incredible..
i have one, and i havent tested it since i have no money and I can't buy a charger for the battery... (im 17 and can't not be yet allowed to get a job)
Tuyệt vời cảm ơn nhiều
Im having trouble figuring out how to get the pictures onto my computer and I can't seem to find the driver for it. How did you transfer your photos?
I used a USB-card reader. I don't have the right type of USB-cable to connect the camera directly to the computer.
I have not checked, but it might be possible to find the drivers on the Internet Archive.
Hi Mikael, my winding lever got stuck on kiev60. and had a film inside. i believe i could not wind it all the way up. do you have any suggestions ? 🙏🏽
It might be possible to rescue the film, by opening the camera in the dark (must be complete darkness) and taking out the film.
Should I get a g9 or g7
Whichever you can find for a good price.
i bought this today on second hand brand new for 45 euro with 2 lens 50mm 1.18 and 135mm 1:3.5 very happy
That's a great find!
Hello Mikael. I am looking to enter photography with this. May I ask how does this camera hold up to a modern iPhone?
In daylight it holds up well, in low light it produces very noisy photos. The built in flash is quite good though. Modern smartphones rely a lot on computational photography and AI, and the photos tend to look kind of fake. The photos from the G7 look much more realistic. In general the G7 is good as a first camera and it has all the manual settings available.
¿Está usando el Grip MB-200 con una batería?.
I'm using it with the Nikon lithium battery, it has space for two. There is also an insert for AA-batteries which I don't have.
I have a D90 that I always paired with a 80 to 200 mm 2.8 AF-D zoom. (screwdriver two twist) I used to go to the local zoo quite often. Recently, I had occasion to go through those old photos. I'm pretty pleased with those images. (And shamelessly myself for taking them). The lens is in the shop now. (After 24 years and carried over from film why wouldn't it be?) But AFAIK, the D90 is still kicking. One caveat with the D90's low pixel count, it's sort of useless for wildlife. You need 20 to 24 mp so that you have some leeway to crop. You simply can't keep buying longer and longer lenses. (At least I can't).
That's true, the resolution is a big limitation for wildlife.
Hi I have been having the problem of the focus being kinda stuck when going counterclockwise is there anyway to fix that?
The lubrication in these lenses usually becomes sticky - the only way to fix it is to clean out the old oil and relubricate.
@@mikaelrphoto Ah thank you!!! I think I can manage with it being a little stuck, love your videos by the way!

Just a moment of a bit non commentary video to enjoy the scenery :D Anyways make more Vlogs. Greetings from Germany.
D200 or D300, what is your choice?
I have a D300 and think it's pretty great! It is my first DSLR (my first camera - not including cellphones - was an L840). They say that DSLR's are dead and mirrorless is the way going forward. Bit that also means that there are plenty of quite capable DSLR's out there that still have a lot to offer often at very reasonable prices. The only thing that I find really limiting about the D300 is its high ISO/low-light performance. But even at that, something like the 35 f/1.8 G helps and I honestly don't do a whole lot of low-light shooting.
Yeah, I went on a used camera buying spree just recently. My intention was/is to have a body for every lens I own so that I can just pick up a bag and go for whatever my intention was to shoot. I certainly didn't spend a lot of money, (at least not by photographic standards), but I sure bagged a lot of goodies. D3300, D5200, D7200, Nikkor 16-80 f2.8 to 4.0, and last but not least, a Tamron 100 to 400 f4.5 to 6.3 which I was out front with tonight taking pictures of the "Harvest super moon". Thank god for image stabilization. The tripod can stay in the closet. I'm sure I could have had a single mirrorless body for those bucks, but then, what would I do for a lens?
The difference is clear in the photos under artificial (poor) light, indoors, where the D700 images display much less noise.
Gorgeous photos! Loved the sunset in the snow with the trees!
