My Wife doesn't like Small Airplanes
My wife has never been a big fan of flying. There was even a time, many years ago, where she didn't set foot on a commercial airplane. But when I picked up flying, she told me she wanted to share this hobby with me.
Now it is time to figure out how to make her feel comfortable in a small airplane. In this video we go over my flight planning and my wife's experience on a beautiful flight to an amazing breakfast in Napa.

This solves Hypoxia: Flying with the Vibeat OxyRing

Blood oxygen levels are very important to monitor constantly when flying in unpressurized aircraft at high altitudes. But most conventional pulse oximeters are clunky and not made to constantly measure your blood oxygen levels while in flight. The Vibeat OxyRing is different. It promises that you can wear it the entire flight to get a full picture of your blood oxygen levels. In this video we w...

Afternoon flight over Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz
The instruction to fly towards the "1's" must've been to fly towards Runway 1L and 1R. I'm glad you shared this video because I plan to fly the bay tour one day and these are the new comms that I want to be familiar with. Thanks for the upload. Like, commented, and subscribed. Great stuff.
You don’t have to fly there; but it beats that steep ass winding road to get there.
The view is probably also better from the air ;) Thanks for watching!
Those animations for the airspace are incredible! Great way to visualize it
Thanks. They are a lot of work, but I think they are worth it.
I will be heading to this airport in the fall, my favorite video of landing here. Nice job!
Thanks! I hope you had a great flight there as well!
Density altitude is no joke. I respect your cautious approach to the takeoff procedure. As the old adage goes, two things that don’t do pilots any good are fuel on the ground and runway behind them. I would fly with you any day.
Thanks. This was also pretty shortly after I got my PPL, so better to be safe than sorry, especially with the lack of experience.
Awesomes stuff
Beautiful video, lovely views, makes me want to learn to fly but I tried a couple of decades ago but didn't truly like the sensation. Far more enjoyable watching videos like yours :) Thank you!
Thanks! I'm glad you like the video. I had issues with nausea when I started my flight training but that went away the more I got busy and concentrated on operating the airplane. I think a lot of the sensations that feel unpleasant at first are something you start enjoying once you are used to it. Maybe give it another try?
Taken at one of the few times in the year that those east bay hills are all super green! What elevation were you at? Looks pretty low throughout except for that last leg of santa cruz -> reed hillview
I don’t remember for this exact flight but for the first two airports I typically stay around 3500 since the distance is fairly short. At the ocean I went down to ~1000. The flight back after Santa Cruz was probably around 5500.
This is awesome. I'm definitely going to plan a trip to do this.
Thanks! You should definitely fly a Bay Tour! I am thinking about another video that goes a bit more in depth about how to fly the Bay Tour coming from the south and which airpace to look out for etc.
I have a question for you 1:52 , you show the Bravo airspace in 3D on google earth. How were you able to do that? I teach the PPL ground class at UC Berkeley and If you can show me this please that would be great. I’m teaching airspace next week and this will help a lot for the students to visualize:
I wrote a little tool myself that gets the shape data from the FAA and converts it into KML files that can then be imported into Google Earth / Google Earth Studio. I am not sure if there's a way to get the shape data directly in KML format. If you send me an email and tell me which airspace you need, I can probably get you a KML file for that airspace. (Email can be found on my channel page)
@@skybound.adventures nice sure! I’ll send you an email! Ya I usually use kml format to put my flight paths on google nearby but ones super interested in knowing how to get the airspace countries like that. Super cool! I was actually able to find a 3D model of the Bay Area airspace so I’ll Jsut use that! Thanks for getting back to me.
I would be terrified. your wife is brave! this is a great video!
Thank you very much and thanks for watching! I’ll pass on the compliments!
Great job on the video as usual, looks like you had a great time in Napa. Hopefully, your wife's fear of flying will disappear over time.
Thanks for watching, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! :)
Sure, Michael did this well, but his wife did the harder work! ;-)
That is very true! Thanks for watching!
Nice job to make it an enjoyable flight as much as possible. I liked the narration by the both of you.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Loving your content!
Glad to hear that! Thank you very much!
My wife was pretty nervous at first with my new hobby. Years later she’s a seasoned traveler and she even prefers traveling in our Cardinal to driving. At first I tried doing as you did…showing how calm I was and not reacting to the bumps I knew were coming as we neared terrain (we live on the Central Coast of Cali and experience similar weather around the coastal mountains). Anyway the calm collected thing wasn’t working so I started giving her warnings….”Hey hon, we’re gonna be descending over the mountains and it’ll probably be a little bumpy on the way in…..nothing to worry about….I got this.” Knowing it was coming allowed her to mentally prepare and not be surprised…which I think is what scarred her the most. The other thing she started doing was riding in the back. I put the copilot seat all the way forward and she sits on that side in the back. She can stretch out more, isn’t worried about touching the controls (which bothers her a lot). She reads a book, fools around on her phone or tablet, takes pictures or takes a nap!!!! That last one is how I knew she was relaxed…..sometimes I have to gently reach in the back and move the mic away from her face….she tends to “breath heavily” at times and it’s pretty funny having that come across the intercom. She also acts as the flight attendant, manning the cooler we put back there for longer flights, and handing me a drink or snack. She’s also gotten pretty adept and helping me look for traffic….something else I started doing…..giving her things to do (like handing me stuff and looking for traffic) helped a lot too. Sorry this was long but take heart, my wife was dubious and reluctant at first too. Now it’s her preferred mode of travel….she calls it our Time Machine. Best wishes.
Thank you very much for that reply. There's a lot of great info in here! I think for us the next step, aside from flying more, is to have her take an introductory lesson with an instructor, focusing on how easy it is to control a plane in the air. I also noticed, when reviewing the footage, that I need to explain more about the radio calls going on.
We’ve been thinking of getting my wife into a “Pinch Hitter” course……teaches her enough to land our plane in case something happens to me. There’s a guy here on RUclips called SoCal Flying Monkey that has a great series of videos on his wife taking one. He got Jason from The Finer Points to do it. Thinks he’s located up in your neck of the woods. Best of luck.
Oh yes I’ve seen that course. I can highly recommend his Patreon as well. Great community he’s building!
Very interesting how many of our wives don't like the bumps. Add mine to the list as well. Michael you did an awesome job of taking this into consideration on the flight. When flying with passengers, they always come first. Excellent job!
Thank you for the kind words. And thanks for watching!
I hated turbulence when I started flying. I knew I would get over it since I had similar feelings when I started rally racing back in my early 20s. I found two things helped, one was training and understanding when turbulence is likely and why, and just exposure in general to the sensation of turbulence.
Exposure for sure helps a lot. But I think it's crucial to not overdo it. That's why we wanted to start small and then slowly increase the amount of wind exposure.
Good job! Nice narration! The only thing I can suggest is to fly more with your wife! It’s hard find calm days!
Yes for sure. Unfortunately the weather hasn't been great here lately, with the storm warning and now the smoke.
LOVE this! My wife is not fond of flying either. Michael I've said it to you before and let me say it again, thank you so much for bringing me back to the roots of my flying, I mention to you that I'm in Hawaii now and I miss my home airport in Monterey and watching your videos brings back all of the memories literally over 30 years ago. I also want to add the fact that your graphics that you include in your videos are phenomenal you're a great teacher! Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing this video and also thank your wife for all of us...
Thanks! I'm glad you like the video, and the animations. They are sure a lot of work. I'm working on something new in terms of animations, which hopefully makes them even better, so stay tuned! :)
Very well done. Your skills obviously go way beyond your flying ability; you're very conscious of your passenger(s) and seem like a very calm pilot. 😉 This is a great video for anyone flying with the spouse and/or loved one, especially right seat. I am fortunate my wife is more of a crew member than a passenger. She can't wait for the next flight and knows "the bumps" are part of it all. I'd recommend to any pilot's spouse flying right seat the "Flying Companion Manual" from PilotWorkshops.com. It's available as a benefit for AOPA members or on the Pilotworkshops.com site. This is not an endorsement, just a recommendation as it was great for my wife.
My wife is a nervous flyer as well. You just do the best you can to make them comfortable. Early morning flights, no abrupt movements of the controls, and the reassuring comments. Our biggest issue is that we have a vacation home in the Palm Springs area and the turbulence can be a pretty big issue!
Definitely stay at it! We were also thinking it might help if she'd take an introductory flight so she can manipulate the controls a bit herself with an instructor next to her. I personally was blown away by how little input you actually have to make in straight and level flight and how well the airplane balances itself if you let go of the controls.
Yes you’re right. Heck, I fly American Airlines of the palm springs and it could be nasty at certain times of the year especially February March.
You both handled it very well : ) Great trip!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you very much!
Appearance wise, looks a little bulky, what were your reactions to that?
Coming from a conventional oximeter I found it rather small. If you compare it to a normal ring then it’s definitely larger. The device itself is a bit off center on top of the ring, so I am wearing it so that more of it is above my hand rather than my fingers, if that makes sense. That felt a bit more comfortable for me. While flying I honestly forgot that it was there pretty quickly.
Cool device! Do you have a oximeter on your watch? It works pretty well for me but doesn't give you an alert as well.
Yes, I do. I am not sure how accurate those are with a lot of motion though. Especially since I'm usually wearing my watch fairly loose. The OxyRing is actually very snug but still comfortable for me, which makes it great for flying.

Hi Michael, das ist ja großartig. Da werden ja viele Erinnerungen wach. Es ist erstaunlich wir klein die Insel Alcatraz wirkt. Ein klasse Video. Ganz herzlichen Dank.
I’ve eaten there! Great BLT!
I had to drive over that richmond bridge for a while daily. Not my most fond memories of California. Looks cool from the air though.
Commute can definitely be a pain here. But it is a very beautiful part of the world!
Flown to Shelter Cove many times. The marine layer, bringing IFR conditions may surprise and inconvenience those who are not rated. No weather reporting and no radio communication with ATC from the ground.
Yes, definitely something to consider. There are a couple of great websites to look at live satellite images before departing, which helps with the planning. But there's always a chance that you have to turn around. Shelter Cove does not have any instrument procedures though, so an IR won't help you too much there unfortunately.
Very cool! Would love to do this one day!
You should! Let me know when you are in the area. Maybe we can figure something out together!
Fantastic video! Love the bay tour! 🙌
Glad you enjoyed it! It's a really magical area to fly!
Awesome Video Michael, great views.
Thanks 👍
Good ADM. People underestimate how stressful a situation like this can be. Traffic, weather, unfamiliar airport. Nice work.
Thank you! External factors and mental pressure was definitely one of the most interesting aspects to learn about during my PPL.
Michael, GREAT JOB on this flight!!! I believe this will inspire more GA pilots to explore…
Thank you very much. There will be another video coming soon with some great views of the bay!
To every "local pilot" at a CTAF airport. Please make proper pattern calls! That means distance, altitude, compass direction, and intentions. "Angels Camp" or "Fairgrounds" as a "stand alone transmission" is worthless to visiting aviators. I don't know your landmarks sir! "Calaveras Traffic Cessna 1234 Nine to the southwest at 2,500 over the lake inbound for 31" makes sense. Yes, I know it takes up more air traffic radio time, but accuracy and completeness are more valuable than speed. If it's so crowded in the pattern, you can't make a call or enter safely loiter out there, take a few moments, and try again.
Thanks for your comment. Angels Camp is actually marked on the map. But yes I think it's much more clear when pilots make position reports based on direction and distance from the airport.
Thanks. I know it's a lot of work to produce these videos, so it's really appreciated. I always pick up a small tidbit of knowledge every time I watch! The ATC is much appreciated as well. :-)
Glad it was helpful! I'm looking into getting subtitles for those ATC calls to make them a bit more understandable.
Thanks. I need to do again!
Looks VFR to me...
Bloddy click bait
I am sorry you feel that way. This is a flight from a fly in event that's called Full Moon Flyers. Unfortunately this is an older video and I was not able to properly record voice overs back then to explain where we were heading and why.
Wtf where is the moon?
This was a fly in event called Full Moon Flyers because it takes place during the evening of full moon.
Personally I would have been able to shoot an approach into Napa however if I was just a VFR Pilot I would have done same or possibly diverted to another airport until weather cleared depending on forecasts
Thanks for your comment. I definitely need to start working on my instrument rating.
beautiful flight!
Thanks! :)
This is my part of the world, Looks like you got one of the clearer days recently.
The area is really nice. I still need to visit Petaluma and Gnoss Field in that area!
Aloha Michael, you nailed this fight for me! I told you in another post actually my first post to you that I got my license in Monterey, well the truth is I got my private between Monterey and Air Trails in SNS... Then I took a job sometime later to manage the Pinnacles Camp Ground where we had private strip so I bought an ultralight that I would fly back and forth to Hollister. I go back to the day when Marina airport was flashing "white white green"... If that reference doesn't mean anything to you ask an old timer at your airport about Frichie 😂... you my friend are taking me down memory lane... THANK YOU!
Wow I had no idea Marina used to be a military airport! And owning your own airplane is still a dream for me. Maybe one day! It must be so nice to be able to jump into the plane whenever you want and just go somewhere! Thank you for watching. I hope you’ll find some more memories in my videos!
@@skybound.adventures Mahalo Nui my friend…please keep the Central Coast videos coming…
Aloha Michael, I'm enjoying your videos! I earned my private pilot's license back in 1989 and my wife and I moved to the big island of Hawaii a few years ago and I just took up flying again here on the big island almost 30 years later and I'm currently studying for my instrument, commercial and CFI/CFII. I received my private in Monterey California where I lived for over 40 years so all of the flying you're doing in your videos is very familiar to me and it just brings me back to Aviation when I first started so I just want to say thank you very much keep it up!
Thank you very much for that feedback! It’s great to hear I bring back some great memories! I have never been to Hawaii but I can imagine how beautiful it must be there to fly! Thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
I saw my plane parked on the ramp at Reid lol
Haha nice! Which one was it?
Awesome bay tour, it's always an adventure. During the early covid shutdown days, they were even accommodating touch and go's at SFO for GA, and a bunch of low passes right over the airport, made for some incredible photos.
I heard about SFO allowing touch and go’s. Unfortunately they stopped doing that around the time I started my training I think. So I never got to do this. I hear San Diego is pretty GA friendly though.
@@skybound.adventuresis this bay shore transition?
@@davidt8087 I would say it's a bit further west than the charted Bay Shore transition. I don't recall ever getting that one actually. Typically they only want you to stay west of 101.
@@skybound.adventures I noticed. So if you didn't do the bay shore or Pacifica or coastline transition, then you basically just got a normal transition through the Bravo? I forgot the video but your route was super close to SFO, and I think you were talking with SF tower correct? That's odd. Normally they decline entry to Bravo unless you fly published routes, transitions, flyways, or corridors
Most of the time I just request a bravo clearance when I am at the coast. This time ATC recommended getting closer to SFO. If I am flying along the bay I sometimes request an explicit transition. But if then, I never have been cleared for a specific transition, I always just get „keep 101 on your right“.
Love this! I just came back from a bay tour! I fly out of Hayward… lol I’m instruments rated so no problem lol ! What air do you fly out of,KRHV?
