2014 VW Beetle 2.0L Turbo engine rattle, timing chain stretched, chain tensioner.

I forgot to mention that the engine has a rattle intermittently during take-off at light throttle. This could be the stretched timing chain causing this.

Great video on how hard it is to work on a 2.2 liter. Now I need to find where the rail is.

@@SteveBoudewyn Serpentine belt tensioner tool.
I went for about 2+ years with a finicky front O2 Sensor on a 2002 Solara SLE V6 1MZ-FE (MCV20). No misfire though.....It would trigger the engine warning light but reset to good on the next startup then come on again on an idle. Gas mileage did go down as I have driven this car for 22 years but not to the point of expensive repair before my 300,000 mile service. The rear O2 sensor under the car is factory still and they rarely go out. As to the recent real problem(s) was a misfire started a month ago on startup in the garage due to other factors according to my repair shop. I parked it until getting towed to the shop. Reasons were oldish spark plugs, bad ignition wire set, and two bad direct ignition coils. My car shook with two cylinders out I thought it could be about 9 things wrong but in reality this was not a heavy fix. Repaired now and ready to chase after the 400,000 mile mark. Mechanic said the V6 Solara is a half a million mile car, possibly more.
I have a 2001 solara it's misfiring a bit when I pass 40 -50 mph and when am parked it misfiring a bit as we'll i got a code p0302 and p0300 which coil and spark plug is it ? Can you help me out
@@ug3052 P0300 means random or multiple misfire. P0302 is cylinder 2. I have the coils/cylinders marked in the video.
@randytempleton5797 thanks brother I did what I seen on your video and it was just the spark plug so I changed the front 3 I have oil leak in the back cover when I fix that all havethe mechanic change the back ones the coils are fairly new like 1 in half years old parts have gotten so expensive on coil it 64 to 84 dollars NGK brand also the back had the manifold so I don't no how to do that on my own

Thank you brother I (we) appreciate this video! I was about to send the flange I purchased back until I saw this and seen how it is mounted. You saved me the headache of sending stuff back and searching for the “correct” flange. Have a great one 🙏🏼
@@danzo706 You’re welcome.
This was a very very good video
Common failure is using a plastic flange especially from auto zone or cheap Auto stores, the heat will warp the flange and it will bend and create a gap for a leak, USE ALUMINUM/ METAL flange.
Thanks for sharing your video. It really helped me. GBU

Is this the same for one with a 3.6 engine
@@StevenDahlstrom-l1r Sorry, but I am not sure.
I really wish I had a VISUAL on how to remove the bottom metallic colored line running to the bottom of it. Please reply to this and tell me.
@@COBRA___YT I mentioned that at 5:30. It just pulls straight down. You might have to rotate/twist the regulator to remove it from the line.
thanks for identifying the problem. I used an ohm meter and checked for continuity from all the legs of the chip on the top side (since the bottom side has epoxy) to the traces on the circuit board on the bottom side. I found that pin 10 was not stable like yours! I melted the epoxy on the tip with my soldering gun and connected a wire to it to another point in the circuit. Works now. Thank you!

thanks man you saved me so much time!! Quick question though do you recommend replacing the whole coolant system of a 2.0L 2004 passat? my engine was leaking coolant, and i have replaced thermostat/water outlet housing. Im asking as ive heard its common that the coolant completely corrodes the plastic cooling system parts....
You’re welcome! I have not heard that, but it couldn’t hurt to replace the coolant, especially if it has never been changed.
Great video I got mine door panel off in minutes and without scratching the plastics that’s what I was mainly worried about

Yes I agree this is the best video of how to remove and replace parts on a vw . Thank u Randy , u saved me a lot of money and time for getting things done on my vw passat. But I do have a question does the commy valve need a gasket when putting it back?
Thank you! Sorry, but I do not remember if the valve has a gasket. I shot this video years ago and I can’t remember. Lol. I’m sorry that the video is so shaky, I have MS and my hands shake sometimes.

Did you have to adjust the regular? Did it just work after installation?

@@buzzardscry1383 Good job! It is pretty easy.
You said twist and pull on the plastic clamps the attach cables to the bracket at trans . There is an arrow on mine. Would you mind exlaining where this arrow is suppose to point in order to release them ? And im twisting but it doesnt appear to have any threads.
I’m not sure about the arrow. Click on “more” under the title description to explain how to remove cable.

What are the symptoms of broken cables, what are signs they’re about to fail? I have a huge amount of side-to-side slop in gear, seems it’s getting more difficult to get in gears
I don’t know if the cables can stretch, it’s possible. The one in the video just broke. The slop could be a worn gear shifter. Remove the console and check it out. Look at the cable mounts while you are in there.
@@randytempleton5797 ok thanks, seems the cables aren’t too bad, is there bushings on the shifter itself? From videos it looks like just a ball and socket, but maybe there is a bushing in it missing
@@jakemaddox76 It’s been so long ago that I can’t remember. It may just be a ball and socket.
T30 torx bit? Did you relief fuel pressure with removing fuel pressure relay or release by fuel pressure line?
Yes T30. I explained at 3:25 that I just removed the regulator slowly.
What do you think is the best transmission fluid to put in there?
Any of the 3 in the video. I used the Valvoline Maxlife. .
Excellent video! Question for you. My wife has a '14 GSR with the 2.0 TSI. Do you recall a second coolant temp sensor on the water pump housing? I'm getting some competing info online and want to try and confirm before I pull the intake manifold.
Sorry, but I do not recall. You might call the dealer parts department and ask.
best design i've seen! thank you sir! i would've made the stop board a little taller though for safety..
You’re welcome. I thought about making it taller but have never ran off of the end of the ramp. I’ve had a lot of practice lol. A little taller would probably be better.
Thank you for help so cable go 6 to 3 then 4 to 1 then 2 to 5 right
Sorry, but I never removed the plug wires from the rear bank, so I’m not sure which cylinders they go to on the rear. You could probably Google it.
I hope your wife got rid of this car by now. I have a 2012 VW beetle turbo and this is the worse car every 3 to 4 months it needs a major repair. It's in the shop now get a new intake manifold for the second time!
Sorry to hear that. We still own the car. Have had it 6 years. We haven’t had too much trouble with it. I had the timing chain replaced a month ago at the dealer under the warranty extension. It didn’t cost me anything. I have a video talking about the warranty.
@@randytempleton5797 well I just wonder why I am having so much trouble with my car. You would not believe the repairs I made on this thing. I had it for 12 years I have replaced fuel injectors, blower motor fan X2 ignition coils and most recently at 85k miles : water pump, fuel pump, air conditioner compressor, heater core, oil switch regulator, timing valve cover gasket, gasket for the turbo, intake manifold x2 intake valves cleaned for carbon build up, complete clutch job including clutch master cylinder and now the car has 102k miles. I don't know what I did wrong with this car it was dealer maintained for the majority of owner ship. Maybe the 2012 VW beetle turbo are a bad model year?🤔
@@bh2155 Wow! That is a lot of repairs! I replaced the A/C compressor a couple of years ago.

I’m having the same problem does it throw a check engine light and does it sound like metal hitting plastic?
I forgot to mention that the MIL is not on, there are no codes. The rattle is so quick and intermittent that’s it’s hard to say, but yes, that’s kind of what it sounds like. The dealer can check the crank to cam correlation (synchronization) , because if the chain is stretched a lot, the cam and crank sensors will be out of synch, because the cams will be retarded. But my service advisor said that it may still be in synch with a stretched chain. Apparently mine is in synch because there are no codes. But with more than 7 notches showing, mine should qualify for warranty. I’m taking it to the dealer in a week.
@@randytempleton5797.....So did they fix under warranty? And did they just replace the chain and tensioner to solve the rattle or all timimg components in there? Thanks
@@chasechevy8933 They did repair it under warranty. I’m not exactly sure what they replaced, the service advisor was not sure. I know they replaced the chain, tensioner, and guides.
@@randytempleton5797 ....Ok yeah, that's pretty much the whole shabang. One more question, would your noise variate depending on the rpm? Mine seems to do it more at idle and low rpm, then go away under acceleration.
@@chasechevy8933 Ours made a little noise at start-up and that’s all. No noise after a few seconds.
I’m on my 4th round of this, they just keep breaking at least once a year, this time the spring and plastic housing gave out on transmission end
Sorry to hear that. It’s a poor design.
Incredibly appreciated awesome
I turned it sideways and the mount came out
