Unveiling an Exciting New Street Photography Channel!
Hi, nice video! Thanks for sharing. I've been thinking about exchanging my Canon 7D for a 5D classic. Am I out of my mind? haha.. I mean, will I see a big of a difference in the image quality ? Idk if you have shot with the 7D, but I'd appreciate your advice. Thanks again
Amen! Yep, messed up a roll or two with my own Rolleiflex. Thanks
4-8MP is enough Its about lens and your settings that creates sharp images
Just to contradict you (in a very friendly way), a couple of days ago I acquired a 1978 124G in excellent condition for far less than you suggest. Amazingly, the light meter works, and even more amazingly it agrees almost precisely with my modern light meter and my Nikon DSLR; so that is one less piece of equipment I need to carry around with me. I'm looking forward to trying the camera out. Thanks for the straightforward description of the camera.
Nice one and nice info mate 💥🔥
Very comprehensive comparison. Thank you for sharing. I ended up choosing a meterless f2.8 Rolleiflex E.
Great review... Very concise and well presented. Thank you for this. I have been looking into picking one up for experimenting in street photography, my Mamiya RB67 is a bit to big and cumbersome for that. Thanx again
as someone who went all away from 2mp and up, Id say 2mp tree branches break, 3mp still but better, 6mp good enough, 12mp nice, 24 can crop, more... get sharp lenses
As I am considering buying one this is one of the best overviews. Thank you so much for taking the time.
Good review and thanks. I used to own a YashicaMat EM; used it extensively. Eventually, I inherited a Rollieflex 2.8 with a Schneider lens. Comparing both cameras lenses, the Schneider is a sharper. The Rolleiflex is a durable and reliable camera. But…Having said that, the YashicaMat was workhorse for me and a very good camera to use too…. I used it in a cold environment, on the sidelines of football games (at the time, my 35mm was not working), etc…. A good value and good camera.
By working with various image dimensions I found that 12 MP is not enough. Then 16 MP... not yet there. But 20 MP (my Sony RX100) or 24 MP (my Fuji) is enough and I am happy. No need for more.
I do sports photography and 24MP is more than enough, sometimes too much to store. If I need to heavily crop, software now is very good at re-enlarging. I'd only go for high megapixel if I were doing landscape photography.
The mirror dropped off in my 5D 5 years ago. Cost me about $200 CAN to glue it back on!
Yes, this was a design issue that was fixed in later models, although there are videos on RUclips to teach you how to glue it back without the costly fees.
Very well explained, and loved the photographs.
Thank you so much 😀
Can it work with a point & shot camera? Like a Powershot G15?
Great video! A couple of points though - You will only get the sepcified speeds if you are writing a large continuous file. If you are sending lots of small images (for example) it will slow things down. Many micro sd adaptors get hot. This can lead to thermal throtling where writing may even stop completely until things cool down.
Before watching the video I was thinking that a 12MP final image size would probably be around the right size. And since I like to photograph wildlife I want to be able to crop the image a bit. So 18 MP seams like a good lower limit for me and I would not mind having 24 or a bit more. But don’t need 48 if I have an appropriate zoom lens.
Superb
Thank you so Much, Kind Sir! I Loved the fact that you gave me all i needed to know about Memory Cards, i mean all from the names to their history. Thank you. I See now that what I actually require is just a v30 card and not a v90 like some people were pushing for.
👏👏👏👏👍👍
I have the Yashica Mat 124G for 40 years but what we want to see is much more of your images taken with this camera.
reasonable acceptable focus, I need to remember that term :) I was a 35mm and 50mm fan, but Recently I love to get close with 21 and 28mm.
Thanks for the comment. I think it is important to set the right expectations, so you may not get pin sharp results but the images overall should be "acceptable". 28mm is my default for street photos, but I love 50mm for posed portraits.
Very informative indeed. Could you make one on cards for 4K dashcams. Quite a few cards, don't work in 4k dashcams, despite them being Endurance cards and V30
Hi I‘m an artist photographer shooting 90% all of my artworks with Etrsi . I even plan to get a digital back for it with a silvestri adapter you need for.. Andy Schulz photographer artist and you find my website site …
At last I understood zone focusing. What a great video👍🏽🙏🏼
I subscribed to your channel after only watching 10 seconds of this video. There is something about you!
I bought the Vb a few years ago and paid about $700. It is mint with the leather case. Just bought a new screen for it, not that I needed to. Thought it might be easier to focus, we'll see. I love this camera. Just love it. Learned how to develope my film too! Wasn't expecting that but I love doing it. I am hooked on film now, I might like to try and get my hands on a reasonably priced Rolleiflex one of these days if they ever come down a bit in price. So expensive! Thank you for your videos. I really like your pictures!
Well done on your Vb, it is a great camera. The screen can be a bit dark. How are you finding the new screen and where did you get it from? I got some from Rick Olsen with a split prism focusing screen, but I sometimes still find it hard to focus quickly especially when under pressure of asking a stranger to pose for me. Thanks for leaving a comment, I really appreciate it.
Why did 4x5/8x10 transparency film dominate commercial still life/advertising photography before digital then? You're talking to amateur photographers here and limiting their knowledge of technical photography. For some printing you are correct, for others not. Also cropping in camera, or in pp, for depth of tonality/colour and for finer details the bigger sensor can help. It's not for every use of course. But it depends on the photographers needs. I used large format film back in the day for these reasons. This debate is moot, just RUclips blah blah to create content. If you think manufacturers add megapixels just for the marketing then I think you should examine the difficulties in making sensors including the cost. Just wait a generation and buy the megapixel that you need, buy older cameras, the lenses/technique count far more anyway . Above all make art first, technique/technology secondary to enhance your photography.
Does it work for something like a Canon Powershot G15?😢
Zone focusing will work on any camera that allows you to set the aperture and shutter speed and the focusing distance. If you don't have a lens with a distance scale, you can use autofocus to focus on say, a tree or anything that is say, 1.5 meters in front of you and then once the focus is set, switch to manual focus so that the focal distance will not change when you press the shutter.
Subscribed. Hope to see many more videos on your channel in 2024 and beyond.
Thank you. What type of topics would you like to see next?
Why not just use autofocus? I use zone focusing with my old rangefinder film cameras, but most modern cameras, even the 20 years old EOS 300X could instantly snap into focus. I know some Fujifilm, Panasonic, or Leica cameras could not do that, but what's the point of using something that is behind 2 decades and then suffer from not getting the shot?
Great question. Zone focusing is the method most street photographers use when they need to react quickly. Autofocus requires that you raise the camera to your eye and this takes a few seconds. With zone focusing I can take photos without looking through the viewfinder much faster. There are many videos explaining this but you can first look at my previous video where I show myself walking along the streets taking photos without looking and you can then understand better why this method is so effective: ruclips.net/video/wc-0bvSdgGQ/видео.htmlsi=QWfYJ9BEU2usWlum&t=179
Autofocus is still not fast enough for me and there's still the risk it's going to focus on the wrong subject. Zone focusing takes that focusing risk out of the equation altogether.
@@takeytakeyphoties upgrade your camera seriously. If your camera can't focus instantly it needs to be replaced.
@@shang-hsienyang1284 I don't need to replace it, with zone focusing I get the shot in focus every time because it's already focused.
The best video I have seen explaining what megapixels you need . I am looking for a new camera and now I know how many megapixels I needed . I really appreciate your wise explanation !!!
Awesome, thank you! Appreciate the comment. Good luck with your new camera. Which ones are you considering?
M4/3 stepping into this conversation. 😎 F2 normally since it’s equivalent to F4 full frame.
Thanks for stopping by
One tip I like for zone focusing for lens that don't have the distance on the lens is to know the height of your body. Know how far your knees are and then waist and then chest and then neck and then head. Then you autofocus to the ground and then set your lens to what you want f8 or something. I'm six feet tall so I'll bring my camera up to me chest and autofocus straight down onto the sidewalk and then set my Fuji 27mm f2.8 lens to f8. All my photos I've taken this way have been in focus. I don't get super close to people but I get close to people. I would say I'm about five or so feet away from people.
Great tip. 5 feet works out to 1.5 meters which is the exact setting I have my camera lens set to as well!
You should give DXO PureRaw a try. I think their noise reduction is even better then Lightroom's new A.i. noise reduction. DXO will restore the colors that are faded from high ISO. Its the only program that I know that can do that.
Thanks for the tip, will have a look for that. I know there are various specialist noise reduction software available, but the Lightroom noise reduction is good enough for me most of the time, even though I know there are better apps out there, I like to just keep everything in one software if possible.
I have a few different ways I do street photography depending on the setup I decide to take out. I did some street photography with my Olympus PEN E-PL1 and the kit lens I just set it on auto ISO and I think I used a shutter at 250th of a second. I only got one photo that was out of focus that kind of bummed me out. When I use my Fuji X-E1 and the 27mm f2.8 I believe they call this kind of motor a stepper motor it makes noise when you use auto focus. I just focus about five feet away and shoot at f8 and zone focus into manual focus. The other way I do street photography is with my super zoom lens my Panasonic 18-140 with my Panasonic Lumix GH2 and I just use single auto focus and photograph people far away. Some of these photo look like people are on a movie set. They have no idea I'm even taking their photos. Really don't have a favorite way of doing street photography I found all three ways to be fun.
Thanks for sharing. Your first method seems pretty close to the one I have described here and the second a little bit also. I tend not to go for long lenses and "secretly" photograph people, only because I prefer the look from close up, but I'm sure you can get some great photos that way.
Let me know YOUR favorite settings for street photography and why!
f8 and zone focused to 1.5 meters, minimum 1/500 shutter and auto ISO (max 50k). 50k sounds like a lot (and it is) but I'm using the Q2 Monochrom and the ISO/noise ratio is more forgiving than a colour equivalent. Thanks for the video!
50mp. 40mm canon pancake lens. Enought to crop in and not have to carry three lenses. 135mm and ability to crop in astrophotography on a budget. Shut up and mind your own failing as a photographer
Why did you title the video rolleicord vs r flex?
Not really sure what has happened here. I did do a video comparing the Rolleiflex, Rolleicord and Rolleiflex T, but clearly, this is not that video. You can find that video here: ruclips.net/video/7rSWiZ_SDNE/видео.html
Прекрасное видео, отличная речь диктора. Спасибо за труд
Thanks for this review. I never knew about the “T” model differences, so that was appreciated. I have had a Rolleicord V for quite a few years now, and had it CLA’d about 15 years ago. I just started shooting with it again after several years of using Olympus M4/3 system exclusively. My ‘cord is a pleasure to use, and takes me back to my school days when I *wanted* a Rollei, but had to settle for the my first ‘ real’ camera, a used Richoflex, that I bought second-hand, and used all through high school. My view is that the Rolleicord, being simpler mechanically without a crank, might be more robust, although I have no evidence for that opinion. At any rate, I don’t mind the winding knob or the aperture and shutter speed controls; the lenses are still fantastic, and the camera is a pleasure to use.
First picture was better more natural.
Good video. You covered the subject well.
Thanks. Appreciate the feedback.
I have purchased a 3.5F. It has a working meter and an upgraded Magicflex screen. Selling some Yashica Mats to make up for the purchase, which should even me out. I think a 2.8 would be nice, but I realize it's an unnecessary expense when I already have a Pentax 6x7 if I want a fast lens. Sure, completely different cameras, but to me a TLR is a style of camera where the speed of the taking lens doesn't particularly matter--- an SLR style camera best suits large aperture lenses in my opinion. And of course, compared to 35mm cameras, f/2.8 is nowhere near fast either.
Congratulations on your new f/3.5. I think that's perfectly okay and no need to pay significantly more for half a stop extra. I would love a 6 x 7 at some stage, but I don't have enough time to use all my existing cameras so I better not keep acquiring more gear.
I’m always surprised when people say the 14 G is “plasticy”. Not so - a couple of the knobs are high grade plastic but these are low stress items. The thing is a tank. Had one since 1975 and it still works perfectly. Actually weighs more than my Rolleicord
Yes, quite right, the 124G is a well built, quality camera without a doubt. I just meant relative to the Rolleiflex - my usual camera - when comparing the two, the Yashica has more plastic. My Rolleiflex f/2.8 weights 1292g vs 1070g for my Yashica, so my Rollei is about 21% heavier.
Forever Rolleiflex is the best . Thank you so much.
You're welcome. Thanks for the comment.
SDHC can be format into exfat to enable record file larger than 4Gb
Thanks so much for your very articulate and accurate programmes. I dislike the term video, because it detracts from what people like you do with this mode of communication. I now own two Rolleis. A Rolleicord IV and a Rolleiflex Standard 3.5 with a Zeiss Tessar lens. Both from 1953, as far as I can tell from the serial numbers. I agree with you about the 3.5 vs 2.8. Such a big difference of price for half an f stop. I have already had excellent results with the Rolleiflex. The Cord has just arrived. I have a cable release for both. So that will probably improve the stability of the Cord. I don't see any major difference between the two. I am curious about the comparison with the two lenses. I used to have a Yashica which was easy to use. A few years ago I sold it to one of my students. I later regretted that. €80 was the price he paid. But now it made me move to the Rollei. The price difference between a IV or a Vb is also silly. The IV has all you need. You"d have to go as far back as the Rolleiflex III to get the weaker lens. Using the Rollei is forcing me to think before going click and thinking ahead even.
Thank you David for you kind comments. Not many people realize how much work is involved in putting together one of these 'programmes' so your comment is very much appreciated. Would love to hear how you get on with the Rolleicord IV. My Vb is great, but I haven't experienced the earlier versions, so would love to know how you get on with yours. I have two Yashica MAT 124G cameras (I did a separate video on that). They are great too, just a bit more plasticky than the German brand. You're absolutely right about these twin lens film cameras slowing you down (in a good way). A very different experience to the modern cameras that, with electronic shutter, can capture 40 frames per second or what I like to call "spray and pray" mode, LOL.
Great video but the piano is a bit annoying…
Thanks for the feedback. I was experimenting with background music which many channels use, but appreciate the feedback. Perhaps I can skip the music, apart from segments where I'm not speaking.
