I like the page, just found you from one of these tokens at a Starbucks!
Haha thanks. I had to try the New pumpkin spice latte today lol! Thanks for the add 😊
To be clear you put my lands on the outside but only tried and true on the inside and then tried and true on the outside on top of the mylands?
Thanks for your comment gary! I put mylands sanding sealer on both the inside and out side . You can see the inside application at 06:13 of the video. Then tried and true to both inside and out
I’ll get banned if I said what I think it is
I can assure you it’s “pg” lol
I know but I'm not allowed to guess 🤣
That looks a killer coffee cup. Could be my next project. How does it stand up to heat and cooling over time.
So far so good. I think it makes coffee better !!!!
Does the finish leave any aftertaste? (Dont want to spoil the taste if the coffee)😂
Only the first cup I could taste the bees wax after that it was fine. I love a good coffee so I completely understand. If you don’t mind throwing out the first cup of boiled water you should be fine
Finish is nice. Only thing I’m confused on was why you were using a #3 hollower on an open bowl like that. Just curious.
That’s a great question and I’m assuming you are talking about the goose neck carbide cutter… because I’m New to the hobby I only have 5 turning tools, two of which are negative rake, this one has a very wide flat steel forearm, so it doesn’t try to twist out of my hand. I generally gravitate to this one for hollowing out anything ! Thanks for asking ! Do you have a channel too? I’d love to check it out 😀
Oh you’re a pen channel!!!! I love it !!! I got my setup from penn state industries
@@kevindcreates definitely understand the flat bottom part. Check out easy wood tools. All their carbides are squared so they have a flat bottom but yes the hollowers have a wider flat bottom. I’m a demonstrator for easy wood tools.
@@kevindcreates yes. I turn lots of things but more pens than others.
Apologies if I missed it somewhere, but what wood did you use and what food safe finish did you use for the inside of the cup? Thanks
I’m not sure that I mentioned it ! That was a branch from a pin oak tree from my parents front yard. The food safe finish is marketed by the name tried and true. It’s a mixture of wax and linseed oil (not boiled) and bees wax. It gets burnished causing friction and heat closing up the pores of the wood
Nicely done, mate. I really like that maker token you glued into the mortise. That's very cool, mate. Cheers, Kezza
Thanks kerry ! Thank you so much for the nice tip on reducing tear out! I know I need conventional tools but until then it’ll be oil and negative rake carbide !
I bet the woody smell is unreal
It smells delightful!!! Just like a campfire
Please keep posting, as a new turner appreciate your techniques and resourcefulness. About at 5 minutes use a scrapper? Can you tell me the make/brand and also your carbide tools? Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words David! Your comment definitely makes creating worthwhile 🤗 So the 5 minute or so I am using a “negative rake carbide cutter (round shape).“ mine, I got from Amazon in a two piece set the brand was Vinwox; I just looked them up and I can’t find that two piece set but vinwox still sells a few sets. The negative rake leads to less tear out so I use that on my final passes on the inside of the bowl; coupled with a liberal amount of oil helps sheer the tear out off ; light slow passes with the motor turned up will give you less to sand. My regular turning tools are the standard carbide set from penn state industries online, they sell a few sets and they are all great tools. These came with my lathe kit and I only have to replace the cutters rarely . If you have any questions, I am happy to talk through them, or create a video explaining anything you might need keep in mind I’m new too, but I’m happy to share what I know ! Cheers David !
I meant to say what kind of wood did you use. Jim's wood shop
That one I believe is some species of Oak, my parents were cutting down the tree in their front yard. I snagged a few pieces. Great grain patterns make some great bowls !
Nice bowl , what kind of do you have. I made some small bowls and sold them at our farmers market. It was fun and I just limbs I find on the ground. Jim's wood shop.
Do you have a channel Jim or a website? i'd love to check it out!
You are so clever and talented
Thanks for the kind words Sue ! I’m just learning everyday 😜 it helps to have a ton of inspiration here on RUclips
Very Cool!
Thanks Thien! This thing is so versatile! I’m only just beginning 😉
Hey Kevin D! I bet u could make an awesome mortar and pestal!
That’s a great idea! I’ll have to try that !
It looks great, I may need to try that finish.
That’s the best finish I’ve found yet; but unfortunately because I used the sanding sealer it’s not food grade
Came out very nice! I wonder what other surfeces you could engrave 🤔
The sky is the limit ! Glass, mirror, plastic ,painted steel any number of things !
Nice, for some reason to me has a Japanese feel to it, good for a couple of servings of Miso soup.
This is my most favorite bowl yet! I can’t wait for the next one , and I can confirm it’s great for hibiscus tea …. I ran out of oolong 😀
Lots of end grain tearout and tool marks. Carbide is good for roughing, but traditional gouges and scrapers will give you a better product before sanding
Thanks for the feedback John! I currently don’t have a way to sharpen conventional tools so I don’t have them yet! I so want to try them though
Go take a look at Glenn and Lisa teagle on carbide and see how to use them properly 😊
Hi Kevin you need to take a look at the way you are using the bandsaw !! You are heading the right way for an accident 😮
@@jimgeelan5949 im glad you mentioned that. I got called out for this video then created a jig for safe circle cutting. Check it out
@@jimgeelan5949 I’ll have to take a look
Some walnut can get really hard when it's old and dry. It's still a lot of fun though. Never give up, just keep turning 😊
That was my first time with walnut ! I got the blank for my birthday and got hooked
Very nice 👍. Finish is the hardest part for me. Good job 👏 the thunder in the background is good too 😊
Thanks for the kind words ! Haha yeah that was tropical storm Debbie
excellent jig tip. thanks
Thanks dennis! I definitely needed this jig ! And you can build one too
Nice. Looks a bit safer. Thanks for the shoutout.
Thank you for speaking up! You were absolutely correct. I’m on a journey; learning more every day
@kevindcreates me too man..
@@kevindcreates the other piece of advice is to lower the blade guard to the height of material...
@@myhoneyshandmade1077 I went over that in the vid 😎 and even had to adjust safely mid cut
@@kevindcreates cool..
sounds like it's storming pretty hard there
It was , I thought I was gonna lose a limb above the roof !
What was that crash?
Great catch! And I even turned the audio down. That was tropical storm Debbie !
You’re clearly very skilled with carbide. I just can’t seem to enjoy turning with them. Great video.
Awe that’s too kind. I actually just started turning! I’m new on this wood journey ! And just picked up a cheap set of conventional tools from marketplace! I can’t wait to try them
Good job my friend 👍🇵🇹😁
Thanks Jose! Thanks for watching I hope you enjoy!
Nice little bowl. A bit of Wabi Sabi going on,, makes it better.
You are 100% correct! I love woods imperfections and unique characteristics! Thanks for watching

nice bowl. that bandsaw cutting scared me for 2 reasons...i cut with the flat side down since the material is safer against the table...and the blade guard needs lowered for safety.
It’s funny you mention that ! So I shot this video, then RUclipsr “turn a wood bowl” comes out with 7 mistakes on the bandsaw the following day. I love his content, said shoot, he’s right I just broke two very important rules. Then during edit, contemplated not even putting the beginning footage in but decided for it to be. That being said , in the next month I’m going to be making a video creating a circle cutting jig for the bandsaw which will eliminate all the danger . Totally agree after watching his video about the guide being too high Thanks for the input and know that I will be altering my methods moving forward. Also thanks for watching. It’s people like you that watch and engage, that keep me making content.
@kevindcreates yeah..love my circle jig..made it for free
@@kevindcreates at least you are authentic. It makes me want to watch videos when creators are honest.
@@JamesCouch777 This channel is all about the journey, no reason to not share it all. i made a mistake, got called on it. Was able to produce a safer means to use the band saw and my fingers thank me :D thanks for watching James!

I was hoping for a cup, not a plug ... LoL 😂
Haha I have a cup on the list of things to make next-ish! I just want a food safe finish that I can confidently use
I thought it was going to be a toy top.
Haha it could if I could find some string !!!
@kevindcreates string is easy. The issue is the tiny metal tips. A friend of mine wanted to make some spinning tops. He lost a walnut tree and he has the wood for special projects. He ended up making them from scrap stainless. Unfortunately, I don't own a metal lathe.
I thought it was going to be an adult toy plug of sorts
@@jameslastname9171 it could have many uses #multitool
Nope, I would never have guessed that it was a ring holder
