I Bought A 2000 Mercedes E320 & Here's Why
I have to disappoint you. That failure is due to the connection construction. In my case it comes and goes For some unknown reason the cables are not connected with connectors, just kept in place with foam rubber. It doesn't age well. So depending on heat and voltage you never know when all pixels will show up. The instrument housing, on the other hand, is connected with two cables and ADB9 connectors.
I had a w210 27 years old. Solid needs general maintenance certain thing needing with age. They are built to last.
Of course it is. Do periodic maintenance and be happy. I am a happy owner of a W123 and a W126 and I often go on long trips with them (more than 1000 miles). Keep the faith and put them to work. BTW, nice E320.
if you are smart and maintain them they can be great but if you neglect them they will murder your wallet. get a can of PB surface shield and spray the underside
I dont make much money and I have allways driven old Mercedes ever since. When I can afford them easily, everybody can! Currently I drive a 320 SLK with the same engine but manual transmission. I bought it for just 4500€ and at least in germany it is super cheap in insurance because mainly elderly people drive these! The only issue with this particular car I had so far was the "Engine Management Relay Module" (it didn't crank at all). It was an easy fix though, just bad contacts.
If it has a Bose stereo the speakers won’t work right unless you rip the who stereo out and put in a new one
Doesn't have Bose.
I have a c class with the same engine and its been absolutely flawless. id venture to say it migjt be one of the most engine/transmission combos ever made
I own a 1998 E-320 with 154,000 miles. I've found that key issues are a problem. If you don't have the original keys and a key that's has been programed there are possible key problems. So far I have done the oil change, transmission fluid, A/C compressor, condenser, air dryer, Brakes, rotors, tires, CVC boot on passenger front. Air filter, inside air filter and now the rear brake light The car is 27 years old. things are expected to brake. I've spent about 4200.00 to do all these issues to date. It rides well, great gas mileage, No dent, rust, inside the car appearance is 90 % some cracks in the dash, speaker cracks. But I've paid 3400.00 for the car. Registration 40.00 overall once all these issues are done I can get a mileage badge for going over 155,000 miles and the car will serve me well. Now consider owning a new car. Higher car payments , insurance, registration and of course gas. In today's world food, rent, clothing, you're working a part-time job. So yes compare the two and I find that I'd come out better with and older fixer. You learn to fix some things yourself and save. Plus the pride in knowing you have a car paid for as a hobby to past on one day. It looks great on the road because there are few 1998's E-320 4 Matic out there looking like they just came off the show room floor. 1/2/24
$350 sounds much more reasonable! good you called around
Great stuff! I'm in a similar 'shopping' situation rn, so I'd love to land something like this, it's just that cars like this are pretty much all gone due to rust here across the pond in the mainland Europe..
@0:46 all those staples in the headliner - are you ever going to replace that?
Not anytime soon. They don't bother me as much…
@@drivenperspective I would leave the paint swirls and speakers and tint alone - that doesnt' bother me at all - but that headliner - that keeps me up at night - i can't stop thinking about that drooping, sagging stapled old thing
My dad currently owns a 1998 CLK320 with the same drive train. Change oil every 5000 miles with full synthetic. Bought it during 2016 with 150,000 miles. Now it has 230,000 and is still used daily. The 5 speeds on these transmission don't really break. Usually it's a connector that gets covered in oil and it damages the computer, that's usually from dirty oil or bad maintenance. We just do drain and fill for the transmission and it's had no issues. I myself own a 2000 SLK230. Same 5 speed transmission. I just drain and fill and it's been solid. Bought it with 155,000 miles 3 years ago and now it has 195,000.
How about rust? They do rust. Mine is no exception. The US nickname is Good Old Rusty. I also noticed the resr power windows are crappy and brake every now and then. There are some videos on RUclips showing this and how to fix it.
No rust on mine. The car is from Japan and now stays in Vancouver so it has stayed away from salt etc.
I dont get electric car either and i worry about it instantly catching fire
If you cannot come up with one reason why an electric car could be better than a car with an ICE then that's a reflection on your ignorance. Educate yourself. Hints: Compare the cost of fuel to the cost of electricity. Compare maintenance costs. Compare CO₂ emissions. I drive an old Benz myself, but you are embarrassing yourself with this video.
I’ve purchased one as well 1999 E320 190k, did maintenance even tho owner said it was already done, oil change, transmission fluid etc & of course a double den with amp & 2(10s) 🫡 this is my first car as well
I own an '03 E320. 160+ k miles, ~ 1qt. Mobile 1 in 6k miles. Never failed to start!
It’s a crapshoot. I’ve had three older Mercedes. A perfect, 100% reliable 1987 560SEC I had to sell when I moved overseas, a 1985 SEC I bought when I returned and a 1991 350SDL I foolishly sold when fuel prices went insane in 2022. That SDL had 235k miles but was completely reliable and insanely comfortable. God, I hate myself for selling it, but at the time it made sense because I was spending $100 a week on fuel. Unfortunately that 500 SEC has been a money shredder. Soooo many problems. It’s cost me an absolute fortune, but now that it’s finally sorted, it’ll never break down. It drives like a dream. Everybody loves it when they see it. It’s insanely comfortable. Of course, 14 MPG. LOL! If I had not moved overseas, I would still own the 1987 SEC and I know for a fact it would have continued to be completely reliable as a daily driver. The interior on those cars is of such high-quality that it obliterates anything sold today under 50k (and higher). I now also own a brand new Toyota Prius and while I love the insane fuel economy, the interior is complete shit. The quality of my 1985 Mercedes blows it out of the water.
Trying to get his quota.
I have a S15 that I'm thinking of changing to auto. I'm 50 now and I want my daughters use it. They can't drive manual well.
Official tried to get u to admit speed
Yeah he tried multiple times…
Nice. Love the old Benz
@0:18 those tacky things on the headliner - that really is unsightly
you have a transmission dip stick?
the color of your car is very nice - i had an opel black once - black at night dark blue in the bright sun
wow all those staples on the headliner - that is so tacky - when you gonna get that fixed.... its easy to do yourself - i've done it
Oil changes are about $65-80 USD if you do it yourself. I do mine every 16k km
I have a 98 e320 with 312k miles. Definitely amazing and truly a tank
@3:13 all those staples in the headliner - are you going to address that issue?
these are so common
Norway called, they said they get cold and run plenty of EV's. How strange.
l have a 1998 E-320 4 Matic . Desert Sand. l,ve changed oil, transmission fluid, Brakes, Rotors, tires and AC and Alternador. 4500 for Car, and service to date, around 3500. 155 k miles. Great range 550 miles per tank. lnsurance 100 a month, registration 40.00. Runs like new, litte things like bulbs, wipers, but its paid for and l'm not seeing many on the road. Rolling for nothing. Can't beat that. Plus just ordered mileage badge, for over 150 k miles. Classic 4 matic. All over the world, the W210 are still running. 12/15/24.
I leased a Kia EV for three years and the battery offered a range of 115 miles on the first year, then 95 miles with a complete charge on year 2 and only 67 miles of range on the third year... I rather invest in parts on an old combustion engine!😆
That sucks!
i had one for a while 8 years ago - an electric - it was nice for free bridge tolls in the bay area - california - and carpool lane with one person - and i like the parking perks - usually chargers near front doors of restauratns and (free) even at malls - and once on NYE a hotel had a full parking garage but i got a spot bc of plug in
i'm zubbbbb 132 - i'll take a t shirt for this special moment
looks like you have some sort of problem with your headliner - drooping, sagging, held up with staples - lets change that out - in this old body style it wasn't so bad - cars just a little newer were expensive to do becuase you had to take out the front windshield to remove it - this just bends out the door
The previous owner installed those to hold up the liner.
@@drivenperspective i think that needs to go - it very easy to get that headliner looking good again
i don't much care for these gas versions but the diesels are great - my 2006 E320 CDI is incredible - even 42 mpg on the highway - and like a rocket
I have an automatic R32 GTST and it’s still a blast to drive , manual isn’t mandatory to enjoy a car , some people take that too far
I own a 2005 Mercedes e 320 4 matic sedan. 87,000. Love it!!
It's a joke ? I hope you don't have to experience a crash with your old taco 😉
Tesla are junk
DO NOT take your Mercedes to a “quick lube” for servicing.
your points are valid, however if you need to buy a car anyway, you can get a tesla for 30k which is comparable to just about everything and quite a bit cheaper than most. Sure you can drop 100k on a plaid but a model 3 is affordable. Then no brakes, no oil changes, no gas, no transmission rebuilds, no no no no.....
only massive depreciation! here in germany, the cheapest tesla model 3 cost ~42k euro
@@benjaminbuljevic7977 wow must be import tariffs.
@@benjaminbuljevic7977 depreciation articles seem to be referencing tesla trade in prices at tesla which are rubbish. Looking at the open market second hand Teslas aren't selling for 20% of their new price from a year ago. I've been looking for one of the magically super mega cheap Teslas and can never find any.
Everything's better than a garbage Tesla.
It’s not imo
My dad had a 2000 e320 4matic. One of the cars I learned to drive on. Issue in my area with old cars like these is rust. Where I lived, no matter how well you took care of it, it rusted. The car had 170k it drove well but by that time the rust was taking it over and it was time to get rid of it. The car used water based paints and that is a downfall for them. An old Benz probably isn’t the best car to consider if you’re looking for an old daily driver imo
Agreed, completely depends where you live. I have covered the rusting issue in one of my previous videos. There are other options you can go for which wont rust...
Thats just your personal preference. BUT your 25 year old Mercedes is in no point better than a Tesla or any electric vehicle.
Sad isn't it? Because it does beat the sh*t off any EV honey.
Nice opinion. Heres a tip: You cant hotbox with the top down.
What world are you living in? They’re total opposites, and obviously the MB is the better car. You clearly know nothing about them. It’s pointless to compare the advances in technology over the years, but everything else is better concerning the MB. Tesla has the worst build quality of any car in the US, while older MBs have just about the best build quality of any vehicles ever made. They also have excellent proven reliability records over many years. With all of the quality issues and limitations of a vehicle like a Tesla or basically any other EV, ANY older MB is an attractive purchase today. There will never be cars of equivalent quality produced ever again. We’re stuck with these hideous cheaply made piles of trash (Tesla).
Just my opinion but for us that have space for multiple vehicles an EV makes a great daily driver. Personally the only EV refined enough is a Tesla and used they are pretty cheap, all EVs depreciate like a 7 series right now. Nothing yet has replaced the fun of gasoline engines though. Took M3P on a 900 mile road trip and it really wasn't a big deal to stop at superchargers. 100 percent it limits where you can take the vehicle. Nice Mercedes, that will outlive most disposable cars built today, electric or not.
Ev are junk
For twelve years my daily driver has been W210(1997,370 000km)and it drives like a brand new car. Also,it´s almost never broken.During these years,I have spent under 1000euros/dollars on repairs. This MB model is a legend to me and I will never sell it.
Mercedes is an RWD - not wintercar
You can buy a 4matic version to tackle that…
Ive had 3 w140's A w140 coupe Cl55 amg and a w210 1998 E430 i drive to work eveyday and its a nice place to be
