Home Insteaders
США
Добавлен 26 май 2020
We are retired from the work force and now doing things that we love. We do many different things like wood working, cooking, canning, dehydrating, fermenting, growing gardens, in ground and containers along with a small greenhouse. We like to hunt and forage as we live in the Pacific Northwest. We like to go camping and lots of cooking in the Dutch ovens. We like to process our own meat whether it is harvested or bought in bulk. We do a lot of things that homesteaders do and a little more. Some people are afraid of retiring because they don’t know what to do with their time. Maybe this channel will help. #woodworking #wood #gardening

Really Thin wood Strips
How to make really thin wood strips using a planer. Using a piece of Melamine on the planer for a base allows you to plane thinner pieces than normal. By taking your time and very small bites at a time you can achieve good results. I was able to get down to .030 of an inch thick by using this method. Be safe and wear your PPE.

Make a simple wooden box with pin hinges
Просмотров 23214 дней назад
This is how I made a simple wooden cherry box with pin hinges. I made it into a recipe box for my wife Cindy by adding a piece of purple heart for card holder to the inside of the lid. This holds 4" X 6" cards. It is a lot easier to cut the rabbits before cutting all the piece. I pretty much tried to figure out where I was going with this as I went along. The hinge pins are just brad nails that...

I made a simple jig and used some painters tape, CA glue and a wood dowel to complete cutting other a circle using this jig. You will be amazed at how easy this is and how smoothly it cuts a circle. This is really easy! #woodworking #bandsaw #circle
How To Change Blade On A Miter Saw
Просмотров 101Месяц назад
This is how I change the blade on my Hitachi C12RSH miter saw. There is a little button located on the right side of the saw that is hard to see. This button locks the blade so you can remove the bolt that holds the blade on. The bolt is threaded with reverse threads so turn clock wise to loosen the bolt. Make sure to unplug the saw from power before trying to remove the blade. Be safe. #woodwo...
How to Make 3D Reindeer
Просмотров 391Месяц назад
These 3D reindeer are really easy to make and also make great gifts or decorations of your own. I am using a 3/16" 4 TPI bandsaw blade. The patterns are all over the internet. Have fun with this project. I used a scrap 2X4 piece for this one. You can use a piece of hardwood which really looks nice.

How To Make Fire Cider
Просмотров 8932 месяца назад
This is how I make our fire cider. We take a shot (about 1 Table spoon) of this every morning. This is said to help fight against getting a cold or flu. We really think that this does help and it is a fiery shot that seems to get you going in the mornings. After it has soaked for about a month then add some raw unfiltered honey to taste. The honey really tames the heat and bitterness.! Have fun...
How to Smoke Salt
Просмотров 1562 месяца назад
Smoking salt is easy and is a great way to add a hint of smoke to your food or cooking. I am using a Himalayan pink salt. Pickling and canning salt works really well for this as well. I am using Traeger Gourmet Blend pellets which are a mix of Maple, Hickory and Cherry. By using a smoke tube filled with pellets adds additional smoke to my Traeger. You should try this!

That is a notch handle Griswold. It was the last Griswold series made before they sold to Wagner in the late 50"s.
Youmention in your video that the plastic part behind the blade can break. We bought our slicer used and it was already broken. Do you have a video on how to replace it?
I am sorry that I do not have a video on how to replace that part. From what I can remember it was not to difficult. Just a matter of removing a few screws. I remember that there was a thin metal shim behind the broken part.
We have the same table saw!!! The 4100 right? I find it's rare to see it being used by makers on the U. What do you think of it? I personally do not like it, I find my fence is not 90 to the table (it leans right a bit) and when I lock the fence in, the far end moves to the right a little. But motor wise, I've got no complaints. I sub'd to your channel!
Yes this is a 4100. I know this is a construction grade saw but this is what I have to work with. I have it dialed in pretty good. Cuts straight and the fence is solid. Maybe someday I will get a better saw. Thank you for your sub!!
@@Homeinsteaders Can you do me a favor, remove your fence on your 4100, turn it upside down, engage it as if you are locking it in to make a cut. When doing that, look for the moving metal bracket with two screws on the left and right side near the engage handle. It should move up, towards you when you lock in the fence. Mine moves up, but not equally: the left side of that bracket slides first, then the right side follows second. This is why I believe my fence moves to the right, since it does not uniformly engage, when I lock it in. If your saw does not do this, I know mine is maybe a lemon. TY for the video, your time, and your feedback!!!
Ok I checked it out and the bracket with the two screws moves freely and pretty much straight. It just seems that there is not much there that can mess up. Have you take the two screws out and removed the bracket to see if you can detect a problem like debris or metal burrs? the lever that moves the bracket is plastic I wonder if that is cracked? I sure hope you can figure this out. Good Luck!
I have something very similar to make strips for kumiko, though along with the back tab to push the wood along, I have a tab glued down over the top of the wood to prevent it pivoting upward. The tablesaw method always eats up about half the wood due to kerf (when cutting strips about the width of the blade). And please, my friend, use a pushstick for your left hand. I banana'd two fingers on my left hand supporting a piece of wood that kicked back. Be safe out there.
Thanks for sharing your method! It sounds like a sound method and safer method. Also thank you for your safety suggestion you are absolutely right!
I love the color when Griswolds are stripped. I call it "Griswold gray," few other vintage skillets have that distinctive gray color.
That is awesome! They are really nice skillets. I love this one!
that was really cool how you keep the control really nice job.
Thanks. I appreciate it.
Very nice!! Love the Griswolds!!!!
I am glad you like Griswolds, they are awesome!
Great jig!
Thank you!
I do the same thing using double sided tape
That is a great way to do it!
Really nicely done! Even fixing the mistake.
Thanks. It was a fun project to do, even with a little mistake along the way!
Looks great! Are you using a 1/2" blade on your saw?
Thanks, I am using a 3/8”, 6TPI blade.
My husband used these plans from WoodPrix and he's very satisfied. However. I love Yours !
Kefir bread 🍞 is also a lovely fermented bread & doesn't need quite as much effort as sourdough.
Well that is very interesting! I will have to give that a try for sure. Thanks for the tip!😊
Love watching your video, I've been making kefir cheese for a while now & just wanted to share how I get more kefir quicker without it getting over fermented (that's an acquired taste 😂) If you add more milk to your 2nd ferment & leave overnight at room temp, it acts much the same way as with the grains in it. Sometimes if I'm being really impatient I put it in my oven just with the light on & get it all going quicker. I just found it helped to keep the flavour milder & less like a blue cheese ❤
Great tip! Thanks for sharing! I will definitely try that! 😊
How did you get the mechanism centered up. Great job!
Thanks. I drew a line 90 degrees to the blade off of the front of the teeth. Then measured from the blade out to 1/2 the radius of the circle I wanted. That is where I drilled a hole for the fowl to drop into. I sure hope that this answers your question.
@ yes sir thank you!
Just found your inspiring channel. I didn't even know I was looking for a way to make a lazy susan (ha-ha). Circle jig idea is cool too. My bandsaw came with a circle cutting attachment, but I haven't tried it yet. Now I can't wait to give it a go.
Thanks for commenting. I hope you give it a try and have fun doing it.
I like the tray design! That seems like a fairly easy way to make a nice tray without having to route it out!
Thanks for the nice comment. It is a pretty easy way to make a tray and not waste a lot of wood.
Thank you. Very interesting video. Sue from Australia
You're welcome, Sue! I'm glad you found it interesting.
Thank you, nicely done.
Thank you kindly!
Thanks Scott
Nice
I appreciate it!
I know right where you're coming from here. We are fortunate here in Missouri to have predominantly Oak, Hickory and Walnut. All burn real clean in our fire pit and fire place. As an older retired guy myself, that whole sawing, splitting and moving wood piles is quite the workout. Good for you, even if you got it delivered already split. Your setup there looks a lot like ours.
Thanks for your nice comment. I am envious of all the hardwoods that are available to you. I would love to have a couple of loads of that! Take care 😊
Oh that looks great for whatever ails you. Almost like aromatic cocktail bitters with some heat.
I've never thought of it that way but you are right!
good job
Thanks
That's awesome and a great idea. I think if and when I do mine I will do a second row of magnets a couple inches below the top one to see if I can keep the knives from rotating. And I'm like you I have a lot of fixes that most people don't see because I'm old and just get going and forget about the little things. Nice project
Thanks for your nice comment. The next one I make will have two rows of magnets. I am glad to hear that I am not the only one that gets ahead of myself. I am getting pretty good at fixing my mistakes though.
Interesting. I have never seen the smoke tube. How did it taste?
It tastes pretty smoky. I could have left it on for a few more hours to get even more smoke flavor.
Did you steal my glue bottle? And my apron! Great looking block. I need to make a small one for my Damascus kitchen knives
Go for it!
Very nice - thank you! I see you have the Harbor Freight clamps - yes - I reject about 1/3 of the F clamps as not well aligned, but on sale, can't be beat when culled. Recently got some of the 'Bessey' ones: v. nice - I gave away the aluminum ones as they didn't stay square with any significant pressure - prob ok for a 3/4 board like here.
I appreciate your comment and I agree, those Harbor Freight clamps are a great deal if you sort through them. They are just fine when used with 3/4” wood.
How thick is the knife
The knife blade is 4mm or .0157 inch thick.
I think it might be what they call an early handle. The newer ones newer older ones are completely filled in or I think that was an early one.
Thanks Scott for the interesting information. I appreciate it.
Very nice! Watching this while eating my bacon.... Yours looks much better. I hope to try your recipe this year. God bless your days with Faith, and thanks for the great video!
I appreciate the kind words. You'll have to let me know how your bacon turns out.
Pretty slick
Thanks
Awesome; a nice Griswold for $10!
It was so satisfying to bring it back to life!
beautiful!
I appreciate your comment!
Hell yeah
Thanks!
Man I would love to see how you made those panels, they’re awesome.

thanks for your comment> Here is a link to a video I did on how to weave or wiggle wood that gets you that pattern. ruclips.net/video/7jT2q3LGR9M/видео.html
I made it by myself thanks to WoodPrix plans. I think it's the best way to learn how to make that.
ok this is a must try project thanks for sharing now make a bread bowl
Thanks for your comment. 😊 What kind of a bread bowl would you like to see me make?
Love your technique. Fantastic design. Great tutorial as well .. Thank you sir ! Keep'em coming !
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Great idea ! I may try this HOT GLUE instead of the CA glue/activator and see if it will work as well. Thanks :)
That’s a great idea! Let me know how it works!
@@Homeinsteaders will do...stay tuned!
@@Timcompton-rt4rxGreat!
Nice setup. Could do the same with a larger jig for larger circles on a table saw, or for those without a large enough bandsaw.
That is a great idea!
I like your jig, great way to solve the of no hole. Thanks
Thanks for your comment. I hope this helps.
don't need that loud music
@@garyperrin8172 Thanks Gary. I have been working on that.
Beautiful waves in your woods mate but I think a little over the top who is the music by I like it 👍👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks 👍 for your comment. The music is Over The Mountian by the Mini Vandals
I made it myself. Just take a fast look for WoodPrix if you'd like to make it too.
I made similar with WoodPrix instructions :)
That’s great! I hope you had fun doing it. Thanks
You can find nice instructions on WoodPrix if you like to make it
Oh my god thanks heaps!
Hope it helps.
I really enjoy plans from WoodPrix.
Really enjoy it. Let's check WoodPrix plans also.
