At the National in Toronto, BGS is doing on site grading for $95 no upcharge where PSA does so that may help them if they keep that policy.

100% the card design. Collectors value great cards. The hockey version looks sort of cheesy, and if you were to survey it amongst the hundreds of Gretzky inserts, it would struggle to stand out. The football version “Touchdown Kings” is also rather uninspiring and that set isn’t highly coveted either. The baseball set is a little better looking but not on the level of the basketball set, but the best player in that set is Barry Bonds and he doesn’t get much hobby love due to the PEDs. The baseball set “Homerun Kings” is also twice as common (1:18 packs, compared to 1:36 for the other sports)

The hockey design is not as attractive. Aesthetics definitely play a role here. I’d much rather have the basketball one.

I understand your point and it makes sense, but only if the goal for collectors is to have their cards appreciate in value. And while that may be the goal for many people, I don’t think it should necessarily be the goal for this hobby or any other hobby for that matter. The junk wax era wasn’t a bad thing, it was an amazing time for collectors, full of innovation and explosive growth in the number of people collecting. It was bad for card values long term, but it served its purpose well as a fun past time for many people. People skateboard, surf, knit, sew, collect stamps, garden, paint, scrapbook and do a million other things as hobbies and have zero expectations of a return on investment, but for some reason everyone in sports cards thinks they are gonna get rich. Sure a handful of cards will become iconic and may someday hold a decent value, but 99.999% of this stuff is going to zero, and that’s okay. I hope I’m wrong, but as long as Fanatics has a monopoly they have little incentive to innovate. They might end up printing fewer cards, but if none of the cards they print are inspiring enough to warrant collecting for the end user, then values will fall even if print runs are tiny. Whether they print 60 parallels or 30 isn’t really gonna move the needle when all the cards are the same with a slightly different hue and sparkle. Maybe I’m alone in this but I want the hobby to be fun and interesting, it doesn’t need to be a source of income or fund a retirement someday.

I think of purchasing modern cards as sort of “buying stock” in a player or set. Stock is high on Skenes and Ohtani, so it may be smarter to wait a bit before getting into those guys. Great video!

I think what you’re saying accurately describes a lot of people in the hobby, especially younger people, but it’s weird how little representation exists in this hobby for people who actually collect the cards as they were originally intended to be collected: as sets. Since the days of tobacco cards, cards have been released in series with the intention that you seek out and bring together every unique card and form a complete set, and the enjoyment and chase was all about doing that. This fixation on individual athletes and obsessing over their careers and fame has sort of exploded over time as celebrity culture has became more pervasive, but it’s crazy to me that it’s gotten to the point that no one even considers set collecting anymore. Obviously people have always had favorite players and enjoyed getting cards of the top players, but I think this hobby would be a lot healthier and stable and perhaps even more enjoyable if people stopped treating athletes like gods and their cards as some sort of strange asset class that is tied to their greatness. I’m a millennial, and even in my short lifetime this hobby has transformed into something that is unrecognizable from what I remember as a kid. Sure, Kobe was a great player and I collect his cards, but his card is just one of many in a given set, sort of like one piece of a puzzle. The enjoyment for me is gathering all of those puzzle pieces and piecing them together to form a completed work. Perhaps I’m alone in that way of thinking though.

I've never used ALT, wasn't planning on using ALT, and now I'll never use ALT. I have 130point, a community of collectors and years of knowledge, Helvetica font does not sway me anymore!

I think everyone knows about this going back well before this video was made. I see it most often with small sellers or sellers from China. It’s annoying but I rarely see cards selling for higher then their comps surprisingly. So most Shill bidders are trying to get fair prices ultimately.

This is a futile exercise since this case is true for every kind of good or collectible. For example antique jewelry, furniture, car parts, toys, and on and on and on. So what?
