020 Aurora Borealis Obsidian (Rainbow) Serrated Biface Part 2 - Northern Lights Series
It was time to finish working on the biface from the previous video by pressure-flaking and serrating the perimeter of this piece. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it is not so bad looking.

019 Aurora Borealis Obsidian (Rainbow) Biface Knapping - Northern Lights Series #flintknapping
Просмотров 1 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Knapping a biface from a piece of low grade aurora boreralis obsidian from Glass Buttes. The Northern Lights effect on this piece was not very impressive. It was more cloudy and not colorful, though I still like the way it looks. I have lots of aurora borealis obsidian with vivid colors that I plan on knapping in 2024, so this video will be one of many that I'm calling "Northern Lights Series"....

Instagram: @KnapTime7 Abo knapping requires a slightly different method of preparing platforms and striking that I am still learning. I’ve been practicing for a while but this is the first time I filmed it. I have a long way to go before I’m remotely proficient with this method....I still enjoyed it.

      I can see how these videos lead you to think that. In reality, a large portion of the flakes removed during the process are further knapped into smaller arrowheads or eccentric pieces.

    I'm trying to learn to make handaxes. Some people say that a lot of the acheuleans are just cores left over after producing spalls. What do you think?

    • @knaptime
      @knaptime 7 месяцев назад

      Handaxes are fun to make. Hmm…in my opinion they can be both a handaxe and a core. If the tool has use-wear consistent with it being used as a handaxe, then that interpretation is valid. At the same time, if the need arises, a flake can be knocked off a handaxe to be used for a variety of tasks.

    I’m curious about the pressure flaker you’re using. Looks like it had a copper coating to start with. Is it iron or steel? Looks too hard to be aluminum,,, I’ve never seen one like it🤔. Buen hecho!

    I like how you approached those square edges. Most knappers reflexively zig-zag them, and there is indeed a time and place for that, but they miss what you did. If you look from the top or bottom of your biface, the corner of the square edge is nothing more than a ridge, and you can send nice wide flakes down a ridge. I like to make that opportunity happen from the tip end, if I can, because it'll be narrower there anyways, but sometimes the base is a better opportunity. Very nicely done sir!

      What knaptime said. Glass Buttes are in central Oregon right off highway 20 between Bend and Burns. Lots of obsidian variants in a many square mile area, but I have found some good gold sheen mahogany as float in the 43.53,-120.04 area. If not local check with Frank Newman of Outback Rocks. He has THE best collection of quality obsidian from Glass Butte, Davis Creek, Lassen Creek and elsewhere. I visit his shop every year, but he does a lot of online sales as well.

    Pro tip on the mosquitoes, Bounce fabric softener, original scent ONLY. The other flavors don't work at all, but 1 sheet pinned to the back of your shirt keeps them away. 5 years flagging in some northern swamps taught me that. For black flies use organic vanilla scented lotion.
