HAPPY INTERNATIONAL TATTING DAY!!! I hope you enjoy this day where the world celebrates tatting.
In today's video, I'd like to share with you some insights into my own tatting journey. I hope you will leave feeling encouraged.
I mention some specific patterns in the video, here's where you can find them for yourself:
Laura B's shop on Etsy seems to be closed. She's also got a book of doilies that I thumb through often, and a Christmas book (that I don't have). Follow her directions better than I did, LOL.

    So I had a free lesson tatting booth this weekend at our local quilt show. It was very well received! Some people picked it right up. Older crocheters I could not get them to loosen their grip on the ball thread trying to flip the stitch. They would not keep correct hand hold in the pinch. One lady sat with me a very long time, I helped her her and helped and helped. I then just kind of gave up because I am not a crocheter , so I could not tell her how to hold it in her muscle memory. I let her down because I do not crochet and could not get through. She was a lefty so I had her mirror what I was doing from across the table. Not sure if I will do this again, but if you have any tips in case there is another lesson opportunity, it would be greatly appreciated. And about your video……the pressure to make is real!!! Yup I too get paralyzed anticipating…..Sometimes I think that the creative process of any craft I get manic….I don’t want to do anything else…not cooking, not cleaning, not working. When I am in that phase or cycle, I kick butt. Right now I am in a lull. The pressure to create is flowing, but I am relieving the pressure with my wips, and am just not going to think about them. The snowflake is pretty! Oooooo your big doily is gorgeous! The bottom doily is gorgeous too! I like it! ((((((Hugs to you))))). Tatters unite, or untie if you accidentally typo hahaha

      How awesome and exciting!! So glad you got to demo tatting, that sounds like so much fun. TIPS: send them to my channel. LOL Seriously, there are a few different ways of holding the pinch with either the index and thumb or the middle finger and thumb. Also you could try reverse Reigo method because they "let go" more so and will perhaps "find their own pinch" more organically. I've been really feeling like making a SCMR vid lately and have wanted to do that one the longest. Though now, you've given me a bit of inspiration on making some shorter ones that I could just blast out... ie different pinch/ways of setting up the loom.... hmmmmm.... I just need to DO it, and not give myself any time for anticipatory anxiety. (Easy to say, right?) I LOVE your sign off - and often have to untie my tatting... I wish it were as easy to fix as a typo!! Thank you so much for commenting! See you around the interwebs!!

    I am admittedly a new tatter. After years of frustration and little success I finally found out what is wrong. I have short thumbs relative to very tiny hands. So in normal slip and slide tatting with a typical 3 inch + shuttle I can make the first half of a stitch but the second half I can't reach across without holding on to the very end of the shuttle causing launching of the shuttle. Using 2.5 inch or shorter shuttles I can slip and slide tat in both directions with no problems. Reverse Riego was suggested to me by Noo Bear. With this method I can actually use larger shuttles. Though I tend to slip and slide the 1st half and Riego the second half. Just though I would put this here in case anyone else has run into similar frustrations.

    • @opp_thumbs_n_scissors
      @opp_thumbs_n_scissors 8 месяцев назад

      Awesome! So glad you found a way that works. I launch shuttles regularly, too. Mine is because my hands are weak due to surgeries. In Rebecca Jones book The complete Book of Tatting, Reverse Reigo is the 1st listed method (if memory serves). I didn't learn about it until MUCH later, after I'd struggled w the flip for a long time. Lol. Thanks for watching!!

    • @opp_thumbs_n_scissors
      @opp_thumbs_n_scissors Год назад

      That's a great idea for this video! Thx. Here's my thoughts about thread on camera in general. I prefer size 10 Lizbeth as it shows up well, is comparable to a size 20 in terms of how the pattern turns out, and won't splay my shuttle blades. Crochet cotton (like Aunt Lydia) is not 6ply and tends to be "fuzzier." It's also not as "slippy" so can be hard to wrestle. Also if it's humid, I'm nervous, or my hands are sweaty for any reason, crochet cotton tends to absorb that moisture somehow and I become all thumbs and have to get the scissors! Lol lol! If you're still reading my reply, thank you! I realize it was longer than you probably bargained for. Thanks for watching!!

    I was just revisiting the first book on tatting I ever bought, the one I learned from, "The Complete Book of Tatting: Everything You Wanted To Know but Couldn't Find Out About Shuttle Lace" by Rebecca Jones - and THIS is the method she presents as Method One, probably because it makes everything so simple. (She presents a total of five methods for the shuttle and one for needle.) And yes, she calls it Reverse Riego too, because... "...when Mlle Riego published her instructions on how to tat in 1850 she used the same method, only she did it the other way around... Riego's description of the single stitch (we call it the first half of the double stitch) is the same as our second half of the stitch and her second half is the same as our first half.)" Then she presents Mlle Riego's original instructions in a later chapter. Anyway, I saw that and wondered if anyone had videos on this method, and Google found yours pretty instantly. Bonus - I get to explore the rest of your tatting videos. Thank you!

      It is a lovely shuttle by Miss Rita. shuttlebydesign.company.site/SHUTTLES-c25529907 I have a lot of her colors, and YES, they hold a lot of thread. They are also good for bead work. Thanks for watching!

    I was looking for a present for my brother for his birthday. This is perfect. I've been learning to tat on my own for quite a while. It is going to be fun to have someone to learn with. I'm looking forward to next week's video. The microphone was cool and the volume was perfect. See you next week.

    This will be fun to see Angie use this as a base for her tat-a-long. May I say that I don't really consider myself the designer of this cross - it is simply ring and chain, ha! The first sketch was impromptu for a student who was not satisfied with a plain bookmark, as I had planned for our lesson. Her only skills in beginning this were ring, chain & join. The reason for the counts being 3, 6, & 12 was to make the tatting finish quickly. The reason for the lack of decorative picots was because the student wanted to make a cross for her brother. She was having trouble keeping up with the turns of the cross from the crude pencil sketch. When I numbered the rings for her, she could follow the pattern better.

      That's what I love about it- simple! (Like me lol). I'm hoping to show some variation especially with the tail to encourage newbies to play & not be so focused on perfection or "getting it right". Tatting is supposed to be fun. Laughing is the best medicine in the whole world! Thanks so much for use of your pattern & for watching & for just being a wonderful human 🥰!

    Gina Butler taught me to tat in person! I am forever grateful to her. This tat-a-long is fantastic!

    Is the weight of this similar to a boye metal shuttle?

      @opp_thumbs_n_scissors 2 года назад

      This is much heavier, I'd say. (I was curious after I typed that so...) Kitchen scale confirms... Boye is 0.3oz & Diver is 0.7oz

    Are the textured shuttles easier to hold on to? They don't slip out of your fingers as easily? Thanks! I'm hearing impaired, so the mic is a little soft, for me.

      Yes. But to be fair, I haven't done a project with them yet. They feel so unusual that I think my brain has become stuck on the tactile-ness of them. Lol. Sometimes they almost feel sticky, but that could just be humidity or me being so hot. Thanks for your feedback, I'll try a different setup for the mic so you can hear me better. (Although, I'm sure some would argue that you're better off NOT hearing me. Lol).

    I’m a needle tatter along with being left handed. However, I like your explanations and I think I can adapt these helps adding and hidden ends. It looks much cleaner than sewing the ends in. Thank you.

    Would you post the sticky mat location too? I’m in a hospital bed with two broken legs knees and ankles. I also have a fractured back, all my items have to be close to me and not heavy ! I am just now learning tatting with and without beads. Beads rolling off my tummy is a problem. Think of the Princesses and the pea. That’s me. LOL (not). My wheelchair and right side of bed is full of stuff along with some shelving on right side. I’m stuck like this for the rest of my life because couldn’t and wouldn’t have surgery. The surgeons would just break shatter more bones trying to fix what was broken in my fall. Been like this since 2019. I loved cross stitching and even designed my own patterns using 160 different colors of thread. I have a project now but can’t comfortably work on it. Any and I mean Any suggestions you have I’d love to hear from you. I do have messenger and on Facebook if that would be a good way of communicating. I am so glad I found you on RUclips tonight!

      I'll give you 2. One from Beadsmith is "official" one, then there's a cheaper 6pack that works just the same. Hope you get to feeling better soon! I have a big tummy that I use as a shelf, so I have the same troubles, lol. I pray for you to have wisdom to know how best to proceed.
