Though your gripes may be true and this camera may become frustrating for your work needs and what you’re used to this is more a of a tale of a naive buyer You don’t buy a race car and complain it has no air conditioning. It’s main priority is going fast not convenience or comfort The same case is here. You bought a camera intended as a crash camera or B camera that’s main priority is small form factor and image quality prodominatley engineered and targeted towards large scale productions You did not buy a camera engineered for documentary shooters or 1 man band videographers. You should instead get a canon or Sony cam and complain to them you want better image quality.
But one thing I want to know. Lets I'm in a car and shooting outside from the window, I want everything in focus. How to do that?
Red Komodo been goin hard , I use it in all ma music videos I shoot for artist , It’s always what you make of it (and Thas for anything)
🔥
In October 2024 I brought a brand new Komodo 6k for $3500 hundred bucs. Considering the camera retail cost is $4,995, I had to buy it.
This camera is SO good for solo filmmaking. If you decide to shoot in ELQ you get a lot more runtime compared to LQ with hardly any quality loss from my experience. I've matched this camera with my Arri Amira, and it's hard to tell the difference. Also side note, no need to turn off the camera in order to switch a lens.
100% agree. Only problem the OG Komodo doesn't have ELQ that was also one of the biggest reason to upgrade to the Komodo X especially for Doc work✌️
@@jannis.rothermel The OG Komodo has ELQ. Just make sure to upgrade your firmware. Been shooting ELQ on mine for a couple years now.
@@jannis.rothermelupgrade your firmware has ELQ. There is a new beta firmware ware as well since then that I just installed a few days ago as well.
One thing I hardly ever hear shooters talk about is the exceptional customer service RED provides. You can email or call them and get a very well trained person anytime. And, they are primarily California based.
Love to hear that
Curious your thoughts. I’ve been wanting to sell off my fx6 here for a bit and move to RED. The price drops made me super super interested in possibly getting a production pack for the Komodo X. I know a guy who is willing to sell me his Komodo 6k with some storage and extra batteries for only 3,000. Have you ran into walls where you wish you had a Komodo X? I’d need to buy a monitor preferably with camera control for the Komodo 6k. Really torn on going for the KX for way more or going for the OG at a super good price. What are your thoughts as a fellow creator?
Fun fact: I actually sold my original Komodo because I primarily shoot documentary-style projects and ended up getting the Komodo X instead. It just solved all my issues. While it’s a bigger investment upfront, it’s a camera that will serve you well for years, rather than just 1-2, ultimately saving you more in the long run. That said, it really comes down to what fits your budget without breaking the bank. Hope that helps!
I have the original Komodo and use the Portkeys 5” monitor made for the Komodo. It is connected to the camera wirelessly for communication. I run an SDI cable to it and a power cable. The power cable goes from the LEMO connector on the Core SWX gold mount plate to the LEMO connector on the PortKeys. You can even load your RED luts onto the monitor. It works great and I have no complaints except that the sliding power switch on the left side of the monitor is difficult to grasp sometimes. I sent them a note to consider improving it. I guess you could glue some sand paper to it. :)
Thanks for posting, Jannis! Your setup is well thought out.
Cheers man🙏🏻
I don't get it, didn't you know all that before buying the Komodo?
Thank you for this vid! How do you get around boot-up time? I would like to get a RED and use it for everything!
Happy you enjoyed the video. Unfortunately there is not much of getting around it. If I can I basically just try to keep the camera running. With 2-3 V mount batteries you should be more than fine for a day! Hope that helps✌️
@ thank you yes, it does help. I kind of knew the answer already, but I wanted to hear you say it because you are actually using the camera for documentary work.
Bro what the fuck are you talking about , the senheiser Audio : MKE 600 CAN BE USED w out phantom power, U LITERALLY UNTWIST THE BODY AND PUT A DOUBLE A BATTERY INTO THE MIC. IV LITERALLY USE IT ON THE KOMODO RIGHT NOW. IT DOES NOT NEED PHANTOM POWER: Also there is another option ::::: little clever thing for the komodo called an Breakout Box for RED Digital Cinema DSMC3 V Raptor 5 Pin to Dual XLR 3 Pin. Which lets u use XLR directly.. Might as well do some research before u make a video on a topic.... Btw , the komodo MADE TO BE A CRASH CAM. It is not made for mounting mics on it , the fact that we use it as an A cam is just states how good it is , but it was NEVER MADE FOR THIS. Storage :R3D files are are way more compressed than any other raw codec of this flexibility , forexample pro res raw takes way more space and has less latitude. IBIS : R3D files STORE GYRO. DATA , you literally put the file into gyroflow and it will stabilize it for you .
what’s the case you used at 5:43? Thanks
I'm switching from canon to sony simply because of e-mount. The amount of crazy good value lenses is unmatched. Canon is zero consumer oriented. That said: i think canon camera bodies are pretty much perfect. And they have all the features i need. Right now sony offers not a single camera that is a suitable replacement for my r6 mk2. I hope the a7v will be fitting
whatt.... the a7iv is far more superior then the r6 mark 2. what do you mean?
@@francis2339 lol. in which area is the a7iv superior to the r6 mk2 please? Except for megapixels?
@@bamhamer are you for real? 1. Dynamic range is superior on the A7 IV, retaining more detail in highlights and shadows compared to the Canon. 2.Battery life 3.More accurate autofocus 4.Lens ecosystem 5.A7 IV oversamples from 7K = more detailed image. Do i have to keep going...?
the a7 iv smoked it if you do any video or portaits/ landscape. Only at sports, or fast moving video the conon wins due to read out speed
Did you have any issues with sand on the beach and the open vents of this body?
In the professional world nobody records audio in Camera. You have a sound crew.
What camera did you shoot this video with? The image/lighting is 🔥
Thanks so much! I used the Canon R5C for this one🤙
such insane quality and valuable content, dam
Thanks so much! Happy to hear that✌️
Thanks Jannis. What is that interesting UI that has the moodboard in it? It looks like an interesting web service
well they just released the c80 hehe sooo if ur in the return window def do the swap.
I don’t know the C70 is more than enough and even though only being super35mm it has a much better dynamic range✌️
@@jannis.rothermel do it for content 🫡🫡🫡🫡
I don't get your points at all. What is the problem with paying more for more functions and features? There is a problem with Sony not gate-keeping and therefore it's good that Canon is? Most people don't stick to a brand, they stick to a mount since all the lenses they buy are of the same mount, and it's expensive to switch mount. Anyways, you switched from Sony because you don't see a clear gear upgrade path, and you switched to Canon because you see how they are gatekeeping and there will be lots of feature upgrades which Sony already has that will come to Canon in the future? I think I have misunderstood since it doesn't make sense. I am on the RF-mount for stills and starting to learn filming videos. The R8 is the cheapest full-frame with the best autofocus for the money. Canon also has a more extensive and cheaper budget primes line-up than other mounts. These are the two reasons I'm on the RF mount. If you can't sum it up in a sentence or two, it makes less sense in a 10 minute explanation.
Nice video! You should make a video on your coloring process. It looks gorgeous
Thank you! Will do!
Someone is still immersed in the mirrorless DSLR world. Nearly all of the issues stated are common gripes of folks that haven’t acclimated to professional sets. Furthermore, many of the issues stated aren’t accurately stated nor the full story expressed.
sick! thanks for sharing
Glad you liked it!
Set pre roll on cam. Will be good for you if 30 seconds Is a problem for you. I have a sound devices mixpre on mine for fantastic audio. ELQ 6K best option if you want to save file space. I just brought more storage and stick to MQ 6k love it.
Appreciate the tips! ELQ is unfortunately not available for the OG Komodo yet!
What was your camera and lighting set up for the talking head parts of this reel? Looks absolutely stunning.
Many of your problems with the Komodo is that you’re running a Crash Cam as your A-Cam. You should rent a Komodo-X and see if that suits your workflow better.
@@JaymesMedia not wrong about that. After the price drop yesterday it’s more appealing than ever 🤙
I bet, that pricing is very competitive
A7s3 was amazing but killed by fx3. even a7iv has better features for daily users and videographers.
can ı be your intern with no money hahsgadjahsdasg
Sony definitley takes the cake for feature-rich cameras and consistent releases. I agree that the brands are almost opposite though, since Sony is infamously bad at firmware updates whereas Canon does a pretty good job (though their release schedule is dubious at best). As an R5C user, I can definitely see where you are coming from looking for more professional features all in a single body. Thankfully we live in an age where any modern camera body on the market can produce high-quality content, and it's great to see you break down the pros and cons of both brands while also addressing the issues of brand loyalty. Hope your experience with the R5C and C70 is as good as mine has been!
Well said! Thanks a lot✌️
I shoot Canon. I too wanted Clog2 on all the cameras. BUT I see many Sony shooters try to match the same codecs from different cameras and had the same issues truly matching the looks. That was probably the only reason I was thinking of trying Sony. Turns out it's not a thing. I have a C400 coming. It will work great with my C70's. Done for a while!
The C400 and C70 combo will be killer🔥
Hey! May I ask, which software did you use for your pitch deck?
Usually I like to use Figma for its customizability but if it has to be a bit of a quicker turn around I’d like to use keynote✌️
Celan setup 👍. I cant push myself purchase Outrigger Side Handle. ( looks expensive for handle ) . You use camera without support ? ( easy rig or shoulder strap ). if need to shoot like 4-6 h
Add the moment I´m using it without any support. The setup does allow the camera to live on my shoulder for a bit but not for long periods of time. But it definitly gets heavy during long days of shooting. That´s why I´m saving up for a high quality shoulder rig option that I can add to the kit. Probably the Bright Tangerine one :)
Consider yourself in the minority. Most people are dumping Canon for a myriad of reasons.
100% that’s one reason I wanted to make this video. Giving people both sides to the story✌️
The problem is this crazy misture of photo and video dudes....I don't care about video!!
I guess there is no one size fits all solution✌️
@@jannis.rothermeltrue
Good video brother 👏
Cheers thanks a lot🤙
600 has a battery with phantom power inside
It has but the pre amps in the Komodo are so bad that you get a extrem high noise floor out of it with the Komodo
I’m a solo shooter using a RED Raven and it is a great camera for me. It is also bigger and heavier than the Komodo. The Raven is great and in some ways better than the Komodo. But the Komodo is 6k and the it’s smaller and lighter than my Raven. I think they are both great for solo shooters. That said, I get a kick out of the haters who never owned or even rented a RED, yet seem to want to bash this kid for sharing his experiences. Get a life guys/gals..
Couldn’t agree more with you! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this🙏🏻
I imagine you will be forgiven by Sony shooters for leaving because you said multiple times "Don't get me wrong, Sony is the better camera." As other commenters on this video have suggested, I also believe you don't need to justify yourself or be apologetic to a group of consumers in your decisions. Regardless, thanks for sharing your reasons!
Thanks a lot! Happy to hear you liked the video🙏🏻
The DGO sensor from C70 and and c300 mark 3 is so nice. But I had to get two of them because my R5C looked to sharp next to the C70 ...
The DGO Sensor is just amazing I hope Canon will keep devolving a newer version for the mark II🙏🏻
@@jannis.rothermel I was almost sure they would have made a full frame version in the new C400... but no.. No DGO sensor... Instead they try to mimic sony with low light wins.. instead of looking towards ARRI with the DGO tech.. but yeah.. It would be great to see someone test the R1 as B cam with the C400 as a A cam both in XF-avc, c-log 2 cinemagammut all - intra 10-bit-4:2:2.. its a 24 MP and a 26 MP sensor.. the sharpness and the colors should match perfect.
Is a powerfull videocamera tje Quality is the top 😊
Really appriciate you giving out all these gems for free! Deffinetly top tier content creation
Appreciate you saying this🙏🏻 no gate keeping here. Only a space to grow together!
Damn, this is very high quality content!
This was hard to watch… You’re adapting a crashcam for documentary use and then blaming it for being a crashcam. It’s incredibly shortsighted and frankly a dishonest premise.
So what, buddy? It's a consumer product, buy both?? Why does this RUclips algorithm take me to so many dumb channels?
You're just bragging. I bought a Red Komoto (thanks Dad xxx)
I prefer Canon But I Do Not Respect Them.
Hahaha I get you😂
Interesting thought! I never really knew how to articulate my thoughts on this topic but I agree 100000% I switched from Sony to Canon recently and don't regret it. But also want to emphasize the "Cameras are tools", I didn't switch because I hated Sony, I just loved Canon a lot more and still do. All camera companies are killing it though, so the choice is always tough
Happy to hear you are loving your new setup and yes I totally agree with you🔥
The Komodo is definitely the best camera for solo filmmakers that also gets a lot of use in theatrical released films. Blackmagic, Canon, Panasonic, Fuji and Sony (outside of the Venice) don't really get to the big screen with the exception of the Creator. I would say if your style is handheld and you don't shoot a ton of lowlight stuff it is a great option. Once you get to night shooting and gimbal stuff the FX3, FX6, or C500 MK2 really make a lot more sense.
You are definitely not wrong about this one🤙
One of the best videos about Red Komodo! Such a nice channel with little views, you definitely should put more red photos on thumbnails :)
Hahaha cheers. Happy to hear you like the videos🤞
sure as long as you have 4 arms and 2 heads
Sounds good! That would make a lot of things easier😂
