Primal Ireland - Stories of History & Culture
Ирландия
Добавлен 5 ноя 2021
I tell a range of stories from Ireland, many of them lost or forgotten, that are structured around my the playlists. All footage is my own except for historical pictures and occasional fair use video which is used under creative content licence, as too is any music I use. I do all this as a creative outlet and I now only post when I've got the time and more importantly the motivation! If you wish to contribute to my work please follow the link below to "Buy me a coffee". In any event, thanks for watching.

Saving Irish Chieftain- Red Hugh O'Donnell
Set in Ireland in 1592, this is the sad story of how two young men were imprisoned by the English without trail and held for literally years as hostages. They made their escape from captivity in Dublin Castle to an independent chieftain in the Wicklow Mountains (Fiach McHugh O'Byrne). Their names were Red Hugh O'Donnell and Art O'Neill. Hugh O'Donnell would go on to become a leader of the Ulster Irish along with the great Hugh O'Neill to conduct the Nine Years (1593-1603) war with the English forces in Ireland. In these years the Ulstermen had great victories against the English forces but would ultimately fail when their great Northern armies we forced to march to the very South of Irela...

Towerhouses were castles built by the wealthy members of society in many parts of Ireland in late medieval times - the 15th and 16th centuries. They consist of tall, usually rectangular towers often of four or five storeys with either a spiral stairs or lengths of straight stairs within the walls giving access to the upper floors. While earlier castles in Ireland dating from the late 12th to th...
Forgotten Irish Victory -The Battle of Glenmalure 1580

The battle of Glenmalure is one of the rare examples of a total victory by a small rebel Irish army against an English one. Set within the times of the second Desmond rebellion and the determination of England’s Tudors to conquer Ireland. I had wanted to tell Fiach’s story for quite a while now and managed to cover some of it with the backdrop of this battle. Yet the entire story of Fiach is tr...

The hybrid between castle and manor house was the Fortified or Strong House..
Просмотров 6566 месяцев назад
The Tudors were determined to conquer Ireland, they "planted" English families throughout Ireland in the hope of colonizing new lands for England. The fortified or strong house was an important part of showing status with comfort , yet having the strong walls of a castle for defence from the Irish natives. This video examines two such houses; Rathfarnham just inside the pale, which does not hav...

Sadly, there is little known about this warrior except for fleeting entries to some of the annals and supported by m...

It was a lost Viking legend for almost 1200 years but in the late 2000’s a determined team of historians and archaeologists found the fortified Viking settlement of “Linn Duachaill”, using modern equipment. They finally solved the location of this ancient Viking settlement in the village of Annagassan, Co.Louth, after searches had taken place as far back as 1750. One of the historians that foun...
The Secret of Crossed Legged Medieval Knights

There are over 450 effigies of the tombs of Medieval Knights throughout Ireland and Britain. Local guides in the Churches where they lie will tell you that this marks the tomb of a Templar Knight or that of a Crusader. But is this true or just a legend? This video visits this subject by visiting some of the locations of these Knights in Ireland, but ultimately it seems the mystery will remain b...
Ireland 1577 Gaelic Culture Crushed

The massacre of Mullaghmast Massacre was the mass killing of between 100 and 400 members of the Gaelic nobility of Ireland by English forces under the ultimate command of Sir Henry Sidney in Mullaghmast, County Kildare in either late 1577 or 1 January 1578. It was one of many attempts to clear the countryside of natives so that new English plantations / settlements could be formed in Ireland. I...

Some historians describe the period of the late 1200’s as the “Gaelic revival” ( not to be confused with the Celtic revival of the late 1800’s), where the Irish clans began to push back against the Anglo-Norman settlers with devastating raids. It is a story often repeated in history, a mighty military force that sweeps all before it, finds holding the ground they've won the real battle as they ...

Imagine the indignity of being a member of a Gaelic aristocratic family like the Ua Neill and finding yourself post escape from a dark Dublin prison cold, hungry and soaking wet praying for rescue by fellow Gaelic chiefs deep in the Wicklow mountains. And coming from a pre- Norman Gaelic aristocracy that ruled over Ulster since 2AD and held the High Kingship of Ireland many times. Political and tribal divisions caused societal havoc across Europe in the medieval era, and Ireland was not untouched. Such turmoil also impacted the "olde Englishe", the Germanic tribes that ruled England from 4AD alongside their distant cousins the Vikings of Scandinavia. They too divided and took sides before and after the Franco Normans conquered and colonised England in 1066. Ironically, despite centuries of being colonised islands, it was the island of Ireland that emerged from the turbulent decades of 17th and 18th century Europe to more robustly retain its Gaelic heritage and ancient identity as a new nation formed to advance in to modern times. By contrast the island of the colonisers' identity regionalised, becoming diluted and ever changing to reflect the melting pot dynamic flowing from perilous empire building. Great and timely video. This is Gaelic history we need to hear much more about. Looking forward to your next topic.
Thanks for the insight and have a happy new year 👍

The long road to the GPO and independence. Good to keep the knowledge of these remarkable historic events alive.
Thanks for the input 👍
The war didn't end at the GPO. That's the problem with the mindset of some of the population. They think the job was done once they got their little cut.
@irishrebel374 :: The 2-Nation Solution imposed on the Island has given Ireland and England nothing but Trouble in the Name of Protestant Unity,
You are right. There was a War of Independence, followed by a Civil War, the Border campaign of the 1950s and the later war in the north. But 1916 was important in granting independence to 26 counties. @irishrebel374
Brr! The cold & exhaustion were palpable. English tactics of 'Divide And Conquer' certainly worked.
Correct and thank you for the input 🙂
Ireland loves you all, but this is our home.

At 3.54, the thatched cottage with two doors and no windows is the home of my great, great, grandfather Seamus McHugh in Gweedore. The windows were on the other side of the building as that side didn’t get the blast from the Atlantic. It was renovated by a local heritage committee but unfortunately they did a poor job and it has once again fallen into disrepair. My great grandfather Manus McHugh moved to another house nearby that was built in 1847, the original house was built around 1800 we think. Nice to see it in your video. 🇨🇦🇮🇪
Thanks for the input! These cottages are disappearing and I thought it worth recording what I could, great to have a name to your cottage.

@jackchi9239 Thanks again!
What about the English protestant Crusades in Ireland and England when thousands of English Catholics were butchered and millions of Irish killed. On 1 event alone, 5 & half a million Irish starved to death by the English protestants and replaced. Oh yeah, the rich Irish blamed that on a potato, something like the cows being blamed on climate change for farting.
More bollox from the rich to push their sick agendas to devide and conquer. Religion created by the rich so the poor don't kill them. All evil in the world and academia bullshit comes from those who control the money and especially the media. The Crusades holiday agents for the rich. The plan by the rich is to destroy the white peoples of Western nations.
Thank you, very interesting video. My daughter recently bought a house in Beaufort, Kerry with a stone cottage on the land. Thanks for the education

At this point in history Cambro-Norman would be a more accurate designation as it was Norman marcher lords and their Welsh vassals who spearheaded the invasion. Ironic that a FitzGerald was ultimately elected to govern an independent Ireland. Presumably Gerald of Wales would have been very happy with the enduring effects of the Cambro-Norman colonisation of Ireland as the only race that he held in lower esteem than the native Irish were the English!
Thanks for the input.
To add to what I commented earlier, by the 12th century the provincial kings and local ruler's had established household troops (Lucht Tighe). Also, evidence in literature shows armour being adopted. These troops formed the backbone of any local force, and were undoubtedly the result of larger scale warfare. We also know, from the vision of Tungdale that were was a form of aristocratic heavy cavalry among the Gaelic Irish, but not quite the same Frankish type brought by the Norman's. In short, the Gaelic Irish of the period were not that much behind the rest of Europe when it came to military tactics or equipment. It was the tactical ingenuity of the Norman's, for example in baginbun where they drove cattle into the Hiberno-Norse shield wall. Or, in the siege of Dublin where they did a surprise strike against the High Kings camp that gave them the advantage. Also, the use of Welsh Longbows which were possible to replicate here due to the lack of suitable wood.
Thanks for the input 👍
