Transplanting Red Bell Pepper Seedlings from upcycled packaging containers

Continued from germinating by the fire, these peppers are healthy and ready to transplant. With my favorite Chinese spoon, I carefully transplant 77 seedlings into 4" pots. This is my first year using upcycled juice bottle as a germination house, and I love the results. For decades I have used those sprouting cells. They take up a lot of space, dry out super fast, crack and break easily. I've b...

    One thing I would change. Those nails you use, stick with stainless only! Those nails are made out of unknown steel and it can be toxic. Get some ss bolts in the length you need and some ss nut and your set!

      Thank you for the comment! I appreciate your concern and warnings. I would never use random, unknown metal nails. Everyone who watches and reads these comments should also be aware of the dangers around using just any metal. The nails were stainless, which I did mention in the video. However, I switched the stainless nails to stainless bolts with nuts, so they are secured to the steamer better. You can see the change in the lavender video. Again, thank you for the heads up. I will post the video where I show how to attach the bolts to clear up any confusion for future viewers. The lavender video shows the vegetable steamer with 3” stainless bolts instead of 3.5” stainless nails.

    Nicely done. The tire was nice and flexible too which always helps. Here's another way to get beads to seat. Not as dramatic as the explosion method, but it seems to work and is safer?? ruclips.net/video/cHuyseqOUHw/видео.html (not my video)

      Thanks for the referral. I watched the link and thought that method was pretty cool. I do enjoy the controlled explosion technique though! All the best!

    What did you attach the duckbill too and can it be purchased

    • @farmtofamilyhomestead
      @farmtofamilyhomestead 8 дней назад

      I built the unit myself. I traced the duckbill mount onto 1/4” steel and cut it out. I drilled holes and bolted the duckbill to the cutout. I then welded the cutout to a 2” pipe. Subscribe to our channel so you can be notified when I complete work on a video that explains how I modified the tire changer. If you search on EBay for “modified duckbill tire changer” there are several ready made models available for purchase. Thank you for watching!

    • @farmtofamilyhomestead
      @farmtofamilyhomestead 9 дней назад

      Hi! I’m so excited that you have a still! I did a steam distillation with about 3 L of water beneath the vegetable steamer and herbs. I modified a vegetable steamer to be 3” tall. This way, the water sits beneath the herbs and the steam rises through them. You might want to also watch the lavender essential oil video for more details and tips! :) Feel free to ask more questions, I am thrilled to help!!!

    For my Kubota tire, I used a large ratchet strap (the kind you strap a car down on a trailer) and wrapped it around the tire and tightened it until the center of the tire squished inward and pushed the bead to the rim. I then put air in and simultaneously tap the sidewall of the tire with a dead blow hammer. Anyway, that worked for my small tractor tire to get the bead to seat. I like the duck bill accessory kit you have. I may buy that. Good video.

      I used to use the ratchet strap. If starting fluid doesn’t get it done, I’ll go back. Still use the strap for small tires (lawnmower, log splitter, ect). Thanks for the comment!

    Hi, when you say 3 runs, did you change out your plant material or just add more water and run the process again?

    • @farmtofamilyhomestead
      @farmtofamilyhomestead 16 дней назад

      @emmacurry7056, Great question! I changed the plant material for each run and cleaned out the still, adding new water to just below the steamer. Each run generated between 750mL and 1L of hydrosol, with the still holding about 2L of water beneath the steamer. With these volumes I am assured the still won’t run dry.

    thank you. Just got same one single thumper keg. not fully set up , tightening pipes and fittings. Wanted to see what vinegar run would look like? I am going to store where they have bamboo steamer basket for the essential oils extracts. Free weed / herb around punk tree maleleuca Alternifolia. with a wonderful smell, (leaves) cleans and bug repellent (mosquito plus?? ) like nothing else. Related to the world famous tea tree. I want to get started on been decocting gallons of it - main use for cleaning deep down with some isopropyl and minute soap , drops only. Want the essential oil maybe better? meds uses.

      You’re welcome! I am so glad I could show you what the vinegar run looks like. Unlike an essential oil run, steam is also coming through the collection tubing. The heat and the steam are what we’re after for that final cleaning stage. Stay tuned and be sure to keep us update with your steam distillation. Just a thought about the bamboo steamer: I wonder if any bamboo oils will be present in your final product.
